- Okay Cassie. It's true that Cassie Heather McGregor... Martin, right? It's long. I'm Eloise Duciel, full name Eloise Sophie Marguerite Duciel. But you can call me Eloise, I replied with a little laugh.

I remembered her first name but not Cassie's full name. But... Is it just me, or does she not seem to like this guy? Because she seemed really relieved to turn her back on him. Plus, she's offering to let me into the maze. Without further ado and without him.
A stroke of luck for us, then. Since the guy just entered the labyrinth in the entrance that looked suspicious to me. A bucket. That always means liquid is going to fall on you. Never trust a bucket. I speak from experience. All of Henriette's water traps. Never trust a bucket.
Plus, who can resist a delicious watermelon scent? Yeah, okay, maybe it's a trap. But it's either that or a bucket - so it's probably going to be a very cold and unpleasant trap - and a guy who doesn't look very nice. My choice is made and I guess Cassie did the same.

- So Cassie. What do you say we take the North Entrance? Watermelon and no weird boys.

Perched just outside of the northern Entrance, Falentra seemed to be waiting to be inspired. Waiting for something to pull her interest into the maze. Perhaps it was the mighty scent of watermelon that would be calling to her. But as the girl stood, waiting at the Northern Entrance she would be able to see and hear the chaos at the central path. Perhaps that would inspire her enough to take a chance with the watermelon path. Or maybe...just maybe Falentra was scared of hedges! Only time would tell.

Middle Entrance

Well, it seemed that the note left at the central entrance was no deterrent for two of the students. Instead of taking the note as a warning, it seemed that the young students were up for the challenge or at least proved more daring than their peers. Hopefully, they wouldn’t regret it…

As soon as Shanelle followed Cassie into the maze and crossed into the central path there was a low rumble from behind. Suddenly tendrils of roots and vines erupted from the opening. Branches weaved and pulled together as the hedges quickly closed off the entrance to the middle path, leaving the student standing in the dark corridor with no way to get out except through the maze. The young beauxbaton and first year would now have to brave the darkness together if they wished to find a way out.

With the entrance now closed, the path became darker and more still as the hedges offered no more movement. The path inside would quickly weave to the right through a winding, but open path. A short way down the path, however, the students would be faced with a new option. A narrow path branched sharply to the left while the main path seemed to continue forward for a short way. In the darkness, which path would they choose?

Southern Entrance

The magnificent Lord of Buckets would prove to be Kazuo! With a keen mind, the boy snatched up the mighty bucket. Even if Cosmo hoped they would have gone as a larger group, at least she would have the Lord of Buckets on her side! So into the southern path they went, likely hoping that they would not face anything terrifying like giant spiders or judgemental rock friends. It was true that the southern path might have looked the less intimidating of the three but perhaps that was the trap. To add to the challenge it seemed that there might be a small language barrier with the two students but with any luck they would be able to work through it in the darkness.

The path quickly arched to the left, taking the students on a short walk through the dense hedges. With the fog and tight turns, it was challenging to see more than a few paces in front of yourself. But eventually, the path opened into a small fork and the students would be forced to make a decision.

A new path branched off to the left, shrouded by fog but looking no different otherwise. Or the students could continue forward. However, through the fog on the path they were currently on, the students would be able to hear the soft twang of music. The faint sound of a solemn violin placing somewhere down the path in front of them. Perhaps a dance in the maze appealed to them or perhaps a strange violin in the middle of a fog-filled maze was too ominous. The choice rested with them...

How to Navigate the Maze

1. Each round you can choose an available direction to travel or to take a different action.
2. Each moderation will list the available directions for each student.
3. You can choose to stay as a group or wander off on your own. But if you are alone...beware of the orange.
4. Depending on the paths chosen, you may encounter challenges or changes within the maze.
5. Stats will be used in this tread and thus you will need to ensure they are in your trunk.
6. There will be a moderation post at least once a week. Quicker moderations will be done if all active participants have replied.
7. If a participant misses two weeks of moderation, it will be assumed they decided to take a nap and will be removed from the maze for their safety!

Exploring with @Kazuo Shimada

Cosmo slowed to a stop and tilted her head, listening to the quiet lilting of violin curiously. It was not a sound one might expect to find inside a maze and she frowned in puzzlement, turning to look at Kazuo for his reaction. "Do you want to go see what it is? I can't imagine that we'll make it through the maze without some kind of test... may as well be sooner rather than later, right? And who knows! Maybe the more tests we go through the closer we'll get to the centre." This was indeed half of Cosmo's reasoning, but she was also just plain curious. After all, how many chances would she get to go through a giant enchanted maze?

"I've also been thinking, what if we need to double back or circle around on ourselves and get lost... maybe we should mark which path we take! I could use a stick, there should be one around here." The plucky young gryffindor bent down, scanning the ground for something to scratch in the dirt with. It didn't take long to scrounge out a solid enough looking branch underneath the foliage of leafy hedge. She gave it a quick tap against the ground, and experimentally drew a smiley face in the ground. "There!" she pointed to it proudly and looked at Kazuo once again to see if he liked the idea.

Kazuo glanced at Cosmo as she chose to join him on the bucket path. “You didn’t need to follow.” He pointed out with a slight smile. “You could have gone with the other girls if you’d preferred.” He continued up the path, noting the way the fog seemed to obscure everything. Shifting the bucket to his right hand, he drew his wand from its holster and commanded a soft “ “Lumos.”

As they came upon the fork, he listened to Cosmo’s suggestions, nodding. “I have attended two of Cespedes-sensei’s errands and he is the chaperone of my cabin. He is… a very interesting adult. I have no doubt there will be tricks and traps in this maze. It is possible that the music is a trap or a test but I think you are right. We should check it out.” He agreed. He watched her search for a branch to mark the path. “Ah!” He exclaimed, putting down the bucket briefly to dig through his shorts pocket for his ever-present brush pen. He quickly marked ‘straight’ on his arm then retrieved the bucket. “I’ll mark the directions as we go, too. That way we’ll have a record of the directions. Ready to find the mystery musician?” He asked, taking a step forward toward where the music seemed to be coming from.

Thinking intelligently, Cosmo fetched a stick and would be marking their decisions as they went in a hope that it would keep them from getting lost. Not afraid of the illustrious music, Kazuo stepped forward and decided that he would make a quick decision in travelling straight ahead. Even with the oddity that was random music in a maze, it seemed that the young boy was ready to face whatever consequences his decision might hold.

It would be clear that this was not a straight path, it seemed to turn every dozen feet or so making it difficult to see what might be coming up. But the music continued to get louder as they walked. Louder with every step until it felt as though it was right next to them. As the pair rounded a final corner they would find themselves at a dead end. But they were not alone.

Levitating several feet off the ground, an old violin was enchanted to play rather poorly. It was clearly the source of the music. Just below the floating violin, a musty old boot seemed to be dancing around in a circle with the music. It was a party of two with new guests. The enchanted objects seemed not to mind the visitor, at least for now. But the explorers would have to decide if they wished to further investigate the dead-end or continue on their journey back the way they came.

Shanelle decided on the Middle entrance, a second year girl exploring next to her. She had a feeling that if she didn’t introduce herself, it would be pretty awkward. “Um, hi! I’m Shanelle Meza, a first year student. Nice to meet you.” After introducing herself, she looked up to the maze entrance in front of her. There were two possible paths, to continue forward or to turn left.

Her instinct told her to continue forward, but maybe she could form an alliance with the older girl next to her. So she decided to ask. “Hey, do you want to work together? Maybe we would have more chances with the obstacles we face.” When she signed up for the maze, she had hoped to complete the maze alone. Now, seeing the other contestant, she feared that she might have no hope. The alliance was both a strategic plan and a way to gain more friends at her new school.

While she waited for an answer, Shanelle chose to take her wand from the pockets of her robe and held it in her right hand. She wanted to be ready when things popped up in front of her. While she was really excited, a small patch of worry and nervousness resided in her heart.

Kazuo’s initial impression of hedge mazes was that they were generally either circular or rectangular but that they were supposed to follow a logical progression. This maze, created by magic, did no such thing. He had originally considered using his ever-present journal to rough map their passage but as the path they walked twisted and turned, he gave up on that idea. The groundskeeper would not make it so easy, he was beginning to suspect.

As the path finally revealed the clearing and its magical items Kazuo couldn’t help the amused chuckle he released at the sight. A violin playing poorly for a dancing boot. A dead end, yet Kazuo couldn’t help but to think there might be more to it than first appearance. After all, the one thing he had learned about Cespedes-sensei was that the groundskeeper seemed to have a purpose behind his seemingly chaotic missions for the students. “Revelio!” He commanded, raising his wand in the appropriate motion. What secrets were hidden behind this seemingly harmless display?

“We can backtrack but I’m curious if there’s more to this dead end than appearances…” He spoke to Cosmo with a grin. “I don’t think the maze is going to be straightforward. What do you think, Cosmo?”

Kazuo was not convinced that everything was as it seemed. Perhaps wisely, the student assumed that the strange Groundskeeper might have at least a few tricks up his sleeve. Although maybe he just wanted to have a dancing boot in a maze, it was hard to say but Kazuo decided to try his hand at investigation while Cosmo waited with him.

Casting Revelio would prove valuable for Investigator Shimada. At the back of the ‘deadend’ there was a concealed sign that read ‘Party Path’ at the top of the hedges and a hidden path behind the wall of hedges. So it was clear that there was some way to press forward but the hedges all seemed solid. Perhaps the dancing boot and music had something to do with it. Besides clearly being enchanted, however, it would be difficult to discern their purpose. But sometimes you just have to enjoy the fun...
