The days always seem like they are getting longer. Even though Jack was a prefect, he was severely hard-pressed to focus in class. Magic was cool, and all, but a class was still class, and learning was still learning. So it would stand to reason that he wouldn't stay behind in between classes, nor would he study. The perfect way to spend his free time was just by wandering the halls. To be clear, that was his job description besides stopping fights, which he was already a pro at. So as his final class ended right before lunch, Jack had decided to forgo his food to explore instead. He already had food smuggled into his dorm room so that he could eat later.

With a flourish of his robes as he walked, Jack attempted to make the most prominent figure of himself as he possibly could. But, unfortunately, there was self-importance that the boy exuded. It seemed to make other students get out of his way or talk shit. It didn't matter to the boy, however. He enjoyed the attention, and he knew at heart what he was. In other words: the boy had a god/hero complex, and Warren refused to let others forget it.

The grumblings of his behavior were quite obvious. 'Jack is so conceited' and 'who does that boy think he is?' were murmured as the boy found his way towards the most recent object of his interest. It was just a simple corridor, littered with suits of armor and the like—nothing too terribly out of the ordinary. However, Jack had recently discovered a small side path. He had no clue where it went or even if it would show up today. The way this castle seemed to move like it was alive amused the boy to no end.

As he stopped, Jack's robes slowly fluttered back to hang around his ankles, and he ran a hand through his hair. "Now, 'ere comes the fun bit-" His brown eyes, which bordered on black, was focused solely on the cold stone walkway in front of him. Nothing could bring him out of his zone. He was ready to find a secret. Maybe the next thing would be as massive as the chamber of secrets. The Dormitory of Death, or the Ghostly Gallows or something- It would be dope, though. Jack could feel it in his bones.

───Winnie had finished her lunch early that Friday afternoon and was making her way towards the study room. She had decided to read ahead of her classes scheduled on Monday. This way she could daydream and not have to worry about listening during class. Considering she spent most of her time with her head in the clouds, it was difficult to tether and reel herself back down to earth. As she walked along the stone corridor, she tried to ignore the bustle of the surrounding students. There were a few huddled around each other. From their scowls and crossed arms, it seemed they were complaining about something. "Who does he think he is?" One of them would say. The conversation didn’t pique her interest until...

"That Jack Warren, I swear." The no name Hufflepuff girl’s complaints halted Winnie in her tracks. What had she said? Jack... Jack Warren? That couldn’t be right. It had to be a coincidence. Warren was a common surname, and Jack was certainly a common first name... There was no way this Jack Warren was the same Jack Warren. He was not the boy an eight-year-old Winnie would bother to come play with her when his mother visited the muggle section of her grandparent’s bookstore. It couldn’t be the Jack Warren she had painted an elk for a few years prior. That Jack Warren was a muggle, so surely...

She would stare over at the group until one girl gestured towards the opposite end of the corridor. It was then that Winnie saw a brunette boy stalking down the hallway. Was that him? She had to get closer; she had to see the boy’s face... It was impossible that he was her Jack Warren, but she just needed to look...

She would follow the Hufflepuff down the hallway, ignoring the grumbles and complaints from the various students as she passed by. Whoever this Jack was, it seemed he didn’t have a great reputation. If he were to glance back, she would weave between the silver-plated knights that lined the hallway. She was uncertain why she was being secretive about her stalking, but the idea that this Jack Warren could also be the kid she had known from Dublin... It was exciting!

She pressed her body against the surface of the cold stone wall when the boy suddenly halted in place. She was hidden by a rather convenient corner that allowed her to peek the top of her head out so she could watch the older boy. It was then that he spoke. Memories were funny, fickle things, but a simple sound could pour images into one’s mind, and Jack’s voice did just that. It was accented, of course, Irish, and she recognized it almost instantly. She felt as though she were in a trance as she silently walked up behind her childhood ’play mate’. Pushing herself onto her tiptoes, she reached a hand up to tug on the boy’s robes. An action that was similar to the way she would pull at his shirt when they were younger, and she had spotted him in the bookstore. "Jack...?"

Sometimes Jack would recede into his mind palace to figure out how to process a situation. But, surprisingly, his palace was not glassy nor bright. Instead, it was dingy and dark, much like a cave or a dungeon. The soft sound of water running was soothing to the boy, and of course, the cobwebs that crept into the corners of the cramped cavern didn't bother him in the slightest. But, of course, this is the way he liked it. It made him feel like an adventurer. However, his access to the wonderfully creepy was in real-time. It would be more helpful to explore it instantly, but Jack wasn't the smartest of individuals. So it was a matter of practice, which Jack hadn't really spent too much time doing. A single word echoed through the vacuous cavern that was his mind... "Jack-ack-ack-ck-k." However, what's worse than being surprised is being surprised while you are inside an imaginary cave inside your head.

The slight tug on his robe was equivalent to being pulled off stage with a vaudeville hook around his neck. But, of course, that could have just been Jack being a drama queen, and Jack's reaction was immediate. The boy swung around violently, hands up to defend himself. Not a very healthy response, huh? The boy's facial expression went from a grimace to confusion. Someone had tugged on his robes, right? They had spoken his name, right? It only took a moment to catch sight of ginger hair on the bottom edge of his vision. Like on a rusty hinge, the color of red dropped Jack's gaze closer to the ground. There stood a girl and a familiar girl at that. It was a girl that was most definitely a muggle. Winnie."Oh, Hey Winnie..." A moment of passes before the realization hit him- "WINNIE?! How—what—when!? Why are you he—you can't be here!" The rusty gears that are his mind were slowly whirring up to speed. "You're a muggle, right?"

The realization was the collision of worlds that Jack had not prepared himself for. It was like getting slapped across the face the minute you sit down to take a poop, utterly out of nowhere. Winnie's family owned a bookstore that his Mother, Sarah, frequented multiple times a week. Of course, being a child, Jack was dragged along. At the start, it was a begrudging relationship with Winnie. It felt like babysitting for him until she had gifted him something. The boy wasn't accustomed to receiving gifts from other people than his parents, and most definitely the type to give gifts. Yet, that gift was still hanging up at home on his wall, though he would never admit it. Admitting something like that would make him seem like a sentimental person! He would not allow it. even though he genuinely did cherish the gift. So, as he stood looking down at his childhood friend, Jack's expression was dumbfounded. Is she a muggle, right?

───Winnie was uncertain what she expected, given she had practically stalked the Hufflepuff before sneaking up on him and grabbing at his robes. Would the girl ever learn what was socially acceptable? Curiosity reigned over her mind and clouded her judgement with it. No one would likely judge the prefect for his over-the-top reaction. Some might have even pushed or punched the redheaded pursuer. Still, this did not stop Winnie from backing up and gawking at the fists the Hufflepuff thrust in front of him. It only momentarily distracted her from her true goal, however, and it was not long before they were forgotten. Her blue eyes flickered upwards and locked onto the boy’s face. The face of Jack Warren.

She was uncertain how it was possible she had not known Jack was a wizard earlier, but there he was, in all his glory. Jack Warren, the boy from down the street. He was standing in front of her. Maybe his absence during the school season should have made it more obvious, but muggle boarding schools were also a thing. It had not come as a surprise to her grandparents either, who had told Winnie the boy had gotten into quite a bit of trouble and that was likely why his parents had sent him off to the boarding school. His identity was only further confirmed by his first nonchalant greeting. “Huh?” She was a muggle? What did he mean? It suddenly dawned on her that the Hufflepuff also did not know she was a witch. Why would he have known? She assumed he was a muggleborn, so he likely did not even know about the existence of magic before attending Hogwarts.

The rather boisterous realization caused Winnie to fluster, her cheeks glowing with a soft rosy hue. “I’m not a muggle! I’m a half-blood. I thought you were the muggle!” She lifted her hand to point her right index finger accusingly at the older boy. “Jack! I can’t believe you were magic all this time, and I didn’t even know about it! We could have snuck away and spoken about spells or potions…” She could not help the pout that tugged on her bottom lip. No, it was alright. They would just have to make up for the lost time. He was a year older than her, so surely he could tell her all about second-year spells, right? Right!

Her brain was flooding with a thousand questions and as per usual she could not stop them from cascading from her mouth. “You’re in Hufflepuff?” It was surprising; she would have assumed Gryffindor. “… Is that a prefect badge?” Jack? A prefect? How wonderful. He was definitely responsible in Winnie’s eyes, at least. She was not the best judge of character…

There was something else bothering her. The Jack Warren she knew did not have a scar running across the middle of his face. Not that it bothered her per se, it was not knowing what had caused it that had her concerned. Pushing herself up onto the tips of her toes, she reached her hands up to grab the older boy’s jaw with her left hand. Her right hand slid over the raised pink skin that mapped itself over the boy’s face, as if she could decipher its secrets through touch alone. “What happened? Did someone hurt you?”

With mouth agape, Jack just stared for a moment as Winnie spoke. Jack's reaction was of mock horror and shock. It stung a little to be thought of as average. Of course, there was nothing wrong with being a muggle, but to think somebody thought of him as mundane. "Me? A muggle?" The boy spoke as if seriously hurt by the thought, but he wore a shit-eating grin. There wasn't much of an attempt to hide it. "Are you out of your mind?! I'm obviously very magical, and I'm a half-blood too! My dad is a muggle, which is neat and all. You've met him, right?" His words trail of for a second, the boy quickly swept up in some sort of thought. The brightness dulled a little bit in his eyes before he promptly suppressed any inkling of any negative emotion deep down inside himself. Emotionally the boy was equivalent to a volcano. In a flash, the hint of sadness was gone, and he was back involved in the conversation, "Are you kiddin' me?! If I talked to you 'bout spells and stuff before I knew you went here, I could of totally been killed or somethin'!" Jack wasn't even close to immune to Winnie's charm. The pouty face was a classic in her repertoire, and it freakin' melted Jack's heart. Damn all those times where she had used the charm of a pseudo little sister. He still remembers the time he was forced to wear a pink princess tiara during a tea party. As mortified as the boy was, he couldn't possibly say no to the girl. It was unfair.

Thankfully Jack's ADHD-addled mind, along with years of experience, was able to keep up with Winnie's tsunami of questions. As we all know, The prefect would never admit it, but he kind of missed their back and forth banter. "Badger, all tha' way, and prefect to boot. I'm pretty awesome. What can I say?" Jack lifted his head in pride. He might be a bit of a tool and jerk, but he took his job seriously. Plus, how else would he reap the benefits? "From the looks of you, you got to put up with the nerds." He motions to the blue robes. "Weird. You seem to have the Hufflepuff vibe 'bout you. Y'know with the frolickin' and stu-"

As quickly as he got the words out, he was immediately interrupted by hands on his face. His spine went completely stiff with his hands strapped down by his sides. Jack had no clue what to do. He had honestly never been in a situation with random face touching. Correction, he had never been in a position with face touching that he did not start. "Winnie- Why are-" That's the thing about Jack's scar. It had become a part of him. It was integral to who he was as a person. "I, uh, I got into fight... first year. Somebody cast a spell at me- I punched him first-" Jack sputtered out all of his words awkwardly. He was honestly afraid that Winnie's fingers were going to find their way into his mouth somehow. Irrational but still relevant. Finally recovering from his shock at the face touching, Jack quickly grabbed Winnie by the shoulders and extended his arms just enough to get her away from his face. "It's fine! I'm fine! For real."

───Winnie's face fell at the older boy's reaction to her accusations. “I didn't mean it as an insult, I just meant... You never told me you were a wizard? I guess if anyone was cool enough to be one, it would be you!” She nodded her head as if it made complete sense. She also knew the boy well enough to know that flattery sometimes worked well with him. “Wait, you're a half-blood too? Which one of your parents is magical...? My dad's side is magical. I guess next time you visit my grandparents' shop, I'll have to show you the hidden magic door that leads to the wizardry books section.” Even Winnie knew that grin looked a bit forced, besides, she didn't want to upset Jack, clearly, he was a good wizard; he was a prefect, after all! She tilted her head in confusion at his next statement. “Killed? What do you mean? Why would anyone hurt you?”

Winnie remembered those moments fondly. The tea parties, the flower crowns she had crafted for the boy and begged him to wear, the ‘adventures’ they went on. Winnie often enjoyed pretending she was a strong knight and, unfortunately for Jack, the boy likely endured many jabs to the gut via a pointy stick which she claimed was her sword. Jack was really the only child she was allowed to play with. Perhaps in part because her father thought he was a muggle too. Maybe it was for the best that Winnie has not known the Irish boy was a wizard.

It was probably in Jack’s best intentions not to mention that he had missed her. Winnie had already followed him around like an unleashed lost puppy. If she knew the Hufflepuff had missed her company, she would do the same up and down the corridor hall. It was difficult to look tough when you had a starry-eyed first-year chattering away behind you. She pushed herself forward onto the tips of her toes before bouncing back on the balls of her feet. “Wow, Jack! You must be an excellent wizard if you’re a prefect! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised; you’re so amazing!” The redhead gushed over her friend. “Oh?” Her eyes flickered downwards to look at her blue robes. “Hey! We’re not nerds! We just enjoy learning and creating.” She crossed her arms over her chest and gave the older boy a small pout.

“Is that what Hufflepuffs do? Frolicking?” She questioned with a tilt of her head. It was difficult to imagine her childhood friend frolicking down the corridors. She was soon distracted by his scar. “... Someone hurt you?! Who?” How DARE someone point their wand at Jack. She would have to have to give this person a stern talking to or perhaps teach him not to mess with her only friend. Winnie had a fiery temper that was difficult to control at times. Then again, what preteen/teenager had an easy time controlling their temper? She gasped softly when the boy grabbed her, he knew her well enough to know she needed a good 'shaking' now and then when she got to in her own head.

"... Mother says that scars are just reflections of what we've been through." She suddenly said, her face still turned with concern. She didn't want to make Jack feel bad about his scar. She would reach forward and attempt to hug her friend. If he was still holding her back, her hands would only be able to stretch out far enough to cup his shoulders. It would look as if they were kids at a dance and with a chaperone who carried a yard stick with them. “You look really cool with the scar, Jack.”

Flattery always worked. Honestly, the only way it failed was when it was utterly disingenuous. First, a smile creased across his expression as he tried to hold the faux look of shock on his face. Then, like a dropped porcelain pot, Jack's expression cracked as he let out a laugh. The way that the boy laughed started from his belly before quickly rising up and out. It was wry and almost maniacal, like he couldn't ever stop himself from laughing about a mischievous scheme he had cooked up. In specific ways, it was contagious while in others a little bit cooky. Unfortunately, it only made Jack's shit-eating grin grow broader and more prominent as if the laugh only made his devilish features more apparent. "My Mum is a witch. She's pretty weird 'bout the whole magical world shite." The boy just responded, listlessly shrugging his shoulders. "Wait- All this time- You are tellin' me that your shop is magic?!" The energy quickly returned after the information that the store that he has spent so much time in was magical, and he got stuck in the boring muggle part! "What the hell!" The boy stuck out his elbow to nudge Winnie in a brotherly way. It wasn't soft, but there was no intent to make it hurt. "And isn't the Ministry of Magic is all weird about magic and muggles and stuff? Like I bet they'll kill you for breakin' rules and stuff- I wasn't really talking about me specifically." Jack's whole idea of government was wholly unrealistic and based solely on films. As most would understand, most films are set entirely in reality.

"Oh, pshh, I'm a pretty good wizard. I'm pretty cool and stuff." The Prefect lazily ran a hand through his hair again, as if that would help emphasize his point. "And Learning...That sounds kinda nerrrrdy, not gonna lie..." With a wink, the boy just grinned. "Also, Yes. There are quite a few Hufflepuff's that are annoyingly happy and frolick-e. Not me, of course. I'm too dope to have to worry about that." Subconsciously, Jack struck a pose, with his jaw lifted and fists on his hips, like a superhero. The pose only lasted a moment before the conversation took a quick turn to the person who attacked him. With a sigh boy admitted, "A kid named Andrew Vance. We really haven' had much contact after that fight. It was jus' kind of a fluke." The boy was trying his best to be nonchalant about the whole situation.

There was a slight twinge of self-consciousness that spiked the boy's mind for only a moment. This conversation was the first time anybody had made a big stink about his scar, and it made him wonder if he should worry about it. However, it was quickly stomped out by Jack's iron grip around his confidence. Winnie's words from her mother made him pause for a moment. Jack had never had the desire to reflect on the events that lead to his scarring. That's how the boy liked to live his life, in the present and without repercussions. Plus, Jack Warren doesn't wear trauma very well. With arms outstretched, the prefect could feel Winnie trying to get closer once again. For a moment, Jack imagined his childhood friend as a dog chewing a stick that was too large to get through a door. He knew that there was probably no way he was not going to get hugged. With a not-so-exasperated sigh, Jack unlocked his elbows and let Winnie come in for an embrace. "Thanks, Win." His voice softened slightly and shifted away from his high-energy tone to something more calm but just as happy. Wrapping his arms around the small girl, he said, "Y'know...It's pretty cool that you are here. I was kind of startin' to miss you annoying me." That was as close to a compliment he was going to get to.

───Winnie's shoulders relaxed when her friend gave a genuine laugh. It always felt odd when Jack wasn't smiling, something inside of her stirred and started to panic at the first sign of discontent from her childhood friend. Yes, she would do almost anything to see him smile. A grin graced the Ravenclaw's own features, lighting them up as she shared in her friend's laughter. Why were they laughing? She wasn't certain, but he was laughing so that meant she would as well. Until Jack started to talk about his mum, that was.

"Wait..." She would pause and blink up at the older boy. "Did you just say your mother is a witch who isn't fond of magic?" Huh... That sounded like her own background. Had the two been so alike and all this time been hiding the truth from each other? "My father is the same, Jack. He comes from a pureblood family and claims they were nothing but toxic growing up, so he decided to shun magic and live his life as a muggle. Part of our pureblood family won't speak to us because of his actions, but my father's parents are still in touch with us, and they're the ones who own the bookstore." She explained, it was the 'Cliff's Notes' version of her backstory, so to speak, but the idea was still there. Although her father cheated now and then with small spells, not that Winnie would ever admit knowing as much. "H-Huh? No...!" For half a second he actually had her a bit worried, and Winnie lighted smacked his arm in retaliation. "The wizardry side is well hidden and can never be entered by a muggle, not even my own mother. There is a secret entrance in the employee bathroom and a code that only wizards can see. They do stuff by the rules, Jack. Geez!"

The Hufflepuff's comments about her being 'kind of nerdy' caused the girl's lower lip to push outwards; the dreaded pout. "If I'm a nerd, that means you are too. You're a prefect, they don't just let anyone become a prefect, Jackie. You can be COOL and a NERD!" Winnie also had her hands on her hips as she informed the boy of this, although it had more to do with her current huffing and puffing and less to do with her desire to be 'dope'. Although she definitely believed her friend was exactly that; dope (whatever that meant). "Andrew Vance...?" Winnie's eyes glossed over as she spoke the name, repeating it over and over again inside her head. She turned at her hip and started to dig through her leather satchel before withdrawing a notebook that was decorated with a daisy pattern. She grabbed a pen (the muggle kind, quills were useless, why didn't wizards make the switch? Sometimes muggles had good ideas) and began to furiously write down his name, and then stared expectantly at Jack. "... Tell me more about him. For... No reason at all, I definitely am not going to hex him."

Jack could try to push her away, but Winnie knew from experience he'd eventually give in and hug her. He liked to act tough, but she knew he secretly had a soft side. The boy gave her an inch and she ran a mile, snuggling up against him. He was over a foot taller than she was, so she was left pressed up against his upper chest, her arms wrapped underneath his armpits as she gazed up at the boy excitedly. Yes... The comparison to a dog was an apt description of Winnie Harper. "I missed you too, Jack. I was so sad when my grandparents told me you were shipped off to boarding school, but now we go to school together and we can hang out all the time, right? Maybe you can introduce me to your friends! ... I... I don't really have any friends. People don't like me for some reason..." She admitted quietly, quickly glancing away. "But now I have my Jack back!"

The boy could feel his eyebrows crease as he listened to Winnie mention that her father was restrictive towards magic. Had they always been so similar? They had spent years together but had they really not known about each other's home life. It was somewhat concerning for the boy to finally realize that this girl had things that he didn't know about. Years of believing that he could read her like a book shifted into something much different. It was like locks clicking open in his mind as he connected the dots in his mind. Finally, in a much more subdued tone of voice, the Hufflepuff spoke while reaching up to scratch at his chin, "Yeah my mum is a pureblood, too, actually. She told me that the wizardin' world wasn't as great as it seemed. Said it was dangerous. As if living like a muggle wasn't." Times of fistfights and running away from the older kids always came to mind when the thought of the dangers of the muggle world came up. "But I don't think I could've gone back to the muggle world after seein' all of this." To accent his assertion, the boy waved his hand around his head, point to the surrounding area of stone walls and corridors. "Well I guess it's fine that it's good at bein' kept secret. Otherwise you might get a loudmouth who just spills the beans." Jack had already decided that he was going to look through the magic shop once they got back home to Dublin. He wasn't gonna miss out anymore because of his mother's worried notions of magical society.

Oh god- not the lip! Jack had to glance away as Winnie stuck out her lip. "My Dad says that if you do that a bird will land on your lip and shite on it- So you should stop doin' that." It was true that his father always told him that when he was younger. In fear of having bird shite in his mouth, the young Mr. Warren almost immediately stopped pouting like that. It was an effective technique to stop Jack, so why wouldn't it work on Winnie? But as most things do, the pouting would stop, and Jack's chest would shrink as he let out the air he was holding in. Muttering under his breath, "It's not fair when you do that- It's like I don't have any defense against it." The boy couldn't help but smile a little, but he lifted his chin up so that the smaller Ravenclaw couldn't see his face. While he looked away, Jack quickly spouted out, "Prefects are cool, and not nerdy. I'm a prefect because I'm a badass. No other reason..." Crossing his arms, Jack leaned back slightly as he finally regained composure of his expressions. The boy tried his best to puff out his chest and look as cool as possible. He hated how Winnie basically had him wrapped around her finger.

As the redhead retrieved a pen (which makes so much more sense over the fact that magic folk use quills and ink), Jack couldn't help but let out an exasperated sigh and roll his eyes. "Look, Win. He's older than me. You aren't gonna be able to do anythin' to the guy. Also, do you even know how to cast hexes?" Jack placed a hand on her head, pushing her back a little bit.

Before he even knew it, the young girl was latched onto him. His arms hovered around for a second before he gave in to the fact that he wasn't going to escape the girl's grasp. He knew she was going to hug him, but he wasn't expecting the force behind it. "You sound like I was sent off to a military school or somethin'. I wasn't that bad of a kid, Y'know." The comment was followed by a slight chuckle, "But what do you mean you don't have friends? I-I'm sure a ton of people like you-" Not really great at the comforting thing, but at least Jack was trying. "And my friends are cool. I'm sure you'd get along with 'em. I bet they are in the great hall right now..." He pauses for a second, "Maybe we can go say hi. I bet Jake would love to meet you-" Warren posed. With that, Jack didn't even try to unlatch himself from Winnie as he slowly looked in the direction of the great hall. "Plus I'm absolutely starved."
