Phoenix Welcome to the Phoenix Cabin Closed

Evening, 1st of August
Following the long train journey, students finally arrived at Hogwarts. They were escorted directly to the Campgrounds and registered again. It was, at this stage that they were given the rules for the month. These were pretty obvious but they were stated again by Professor Jensen, simply because she did not trust students to listen. She also wanted to be sure that the visiting students had no excuse of being 'unaware' of the rules. Where necessary, the accompanying adults from each of the schools would repeat the rules in their school's language for people who didn't have English as their first language.

Camp rules were very simple. Obey the curfew, follow usual school rules, don't wander off into the forest, don't be a giant jerk - you know, all of the usual things. Failure to comply would result in a detention, or worse, banned from attending future camps.

Eight log cabins provided lodging for campers, each one with a beast-bearing flag for which they were named. Three were the Avian cabins: Augurey, Occamy, and Phoenix. Across from these were the three Equine cabins: Thestral, Kelpie, and Unicorn. At either end were two cabins intended for adults only but for this year's festivities repurposed for student use: the Hippogriff and Dragon cabins. Those creatures occupying the enchanted flags mutely flexed in a constant show of "friendly" competition: beating wings, clacking beaks, stamping hooves, and soundlessly tossing their heads.

Every structure appeared deceptively humble in size on the outside, while the interiors were enlarged by extension charms, making them wide beyond means and quite comfortable. These were fully furnished with curtained bunks, personal chests, dressers, wood-burning stoves, and plush floor rugs. The layouts were strikingly similar to the dorm rooms back at the castle. Rather than having House themes, however, they featured nuances of the beast on their flag.

During registration, they also all received their cabin allocations. Students were then escorted to the cabins by an adult and given some time to put their bags down, secure themselves a bed and settle into the accommodation that they would be staying at for the month. The official feast was being set up and would start in about an hour. After which, they could attend the first campfire of the month if they wish to. Of course, they could just return to the cabins whenever they wanted to rest.

The group of students that arrived here would be the members of the Phoenix Cabin.

Phoenix

A more rustic alternative inspired by fire and rebirth. Reclaimed wood, exposed rafters. The actual cabin truly resembled a... cabin. [Image Link] One of the most distinctive features here is the fireplaces [Image Link] which are large, imposing and beautiful. Another unusual attribute that sadly has not extended to the rest of the school is that the cabin is fireproof. A fact that is not well-known to students as historically children did not casually set one another or their setting on fire (this crop being the exception) but attempts to set oneself, others or the furnishings on fire would be met with a temporary, painless cool flame (unless the fires started in the fireplaces).

Another aspect of interest is the bunk beds. Simple, clean and comfortable. These bunks do not possess the curtains the other bunks boast, however, there is a bit more privacy in this cabin regardless because rather than a single, large shared room or a small handful, each room only houses two students. The rooms are well lit, clean, and comfortable. Although a bit small, they offer a pair of bunks, a pair of writing desks and ample trunk space for their belongings as well as the privacy of a shut door. [Image Link] Professors do not trust students enough to allow boys and girls (or couples) to cohabitate in the same very private bedroom (nice try).
OOC Guidelines:
1. This thread takes place first thing (after the train journey here but before the Annual Barbecue. Takes place around 5pm-6pm on the first day.
2. It is an optional thread for all members of the cabin, serving as a 'meet and greet' thread if you need it. You do not have to post here but please feel free to.
3. You are permitted to create your own cabin threads at your leisure. Please tag it with the name of your cabin. I.E. [Phoenix] and mark it as PV/Open as usual.
4. Only named cabin members can enter the cabin. Students cannot visit other cabins.
5. Please assume that there is an adult in each cabin, regardless of whether or not they actively post. You are not left alone in the middle of the night. Do not godmod them without permission, though.

Do we just… Go in?

Well, he was in front, of course he had to go in, or he’d be blocking the entrance. In hindsight, Isaac regretted his zealousness to see his cabin for the first time. As he entered from the outside, a peripheral glance made him question the standards of his accommodation.

If there’s no space I’ll just…

As the room unfolded around him, his mouth gradually fell open and he stopped involuntarily in the middle of the doorway, unable to comprehend what he was seeing. Never mind that thought. There was space. Much of it. His fears of having to spend a night in the grass were blown away by the luxurious expanse beyond the modest wood of the cabin doors. Sturdy wooden furnishings were arranged neatly in living areas, the cold floorboards paved with soft, knitted textile carpets; the kind that could give others a static shock if you knew what you were doing. A few seconds passed as the unsorted first year came to his senses again.

… Sorry!” he exclaimed to whoever was behind him, turning around with an awkward smile. “

His speechlessness was deafening, his smile infectious. There was a twinkling in his eyes as he moved out of the doorway, his hand trembling with excitement as it wrapped around the cold metal knob of a room’s door.

I’m going to be a wizard.

A promise that had never been a certainty in his life had finally been made, and he couldn’t wait to see more. With something of a grand flourish, he paraded into the room that had chosen him. Yes, chosen him. Just as how wands choose their owners, there is a Chinese proverb saying that places have a special connection with people. The Asian boy didn’t know what it meant yet, but he felt that he had just taken the first steps into a bright new world of self-development.

In simpler terms, he was growing up.

The cabins were an obvious downgrade from Séverin's sleepover in July, but Phaedra found she didn't really mind. It was nice getting a breather from chandeliers, marble flooring, and tight gowns; a nature-provided learning experience she'd grown to appreciate. After their trek from the train station, she had nearly walked into the back of another student, whose height and unfamiliarity had led her to falsely assume he was both older and from one of the guest schools.

“Excuse me,” she remarked, attempting to push through the doorway while he gawked at the interior. There was a whole line of others waiting to enter and surely these bags weren't just heavy for her. He apologised and Phaedra went on her merry way in the opposite direction. Professors could be pretty strict about these arrangements—if the boys were lodging that way, then it'd be best if the girls started in the corridor over. Plus, she was keen on her quiet. “Come on, Cleo.”

Of course she wouldn't forget Cleo. The school term started immediately after camp ended, so there would be no time to return home for anything. The six-year-old mau was sporting a cute pink nose, pink collar, and equally pink harness, the leash to it grasped tightly in her owner's hands. She was a hyper feline, zooming between the fifth-year's feet as they moved deeper into the cabin. A change of scenery always excited her and Phaedra made a note to let her explore later.

Stepping into the farthest private room, the fresh aroma of mahogany and linen quilts immediately tickled her senses. Phaedra left the door ajar behind her, before bending down to unharness Cleo, who then immediately made a dive beneath the bottom bunk. Phaedra would give it a second before she came sprinting out again. “Now don't you tear up anything, you hear me?”

For anyone else, her tone would come across as nagging, but not when it came to her familiar. Hefting up her enchanted leather duffel bag and making a beeline for the bed, out would come most of her and Cleo's belongings to slip neatly into a trunk, room filled with pitchy humming as she did so. They were staying here for a month after all; may as well get comfortable.

The cabin Sarah was led to was quaint, or at least in comparison to the manor she’d left earlier that day. She’d glanced around at the group of students assigned to Phoenix Cabin and realised she knew very few of them, not personally at least. Not that that was at all surprising, considering the Slytherin’s aversion to forming any sort of relationship with anyone. She was working on it, or so she silently reminded herself as the group stopped before a large set of wooden doors. Had it not been for her agility, she might have run into another of her cabin mates seeing as a small boy who seemed to have his feet glued to the floor had decided to block the entryway.

Her furrowed brow eased at the guilty look on his face, and she rolled her eyes in a manner which was slightly less condescending as it might have been had he not decided to grin at everyone. She wasn’t completely cold-hearted after all, and the small smile she offered the young boy told as much. She tapped her fingers against her thigh as she finally walked into the cabin – a nervous tick she’d picked up at some point the previous year. Sarah decided the cabin looked homey, and despite the somewhat obnoxious print adorning some of the chairs, she liked it. Largely because she knew just how much her father would hate it and when wasn’t that a plus.

After a moment longer surveying her new home for the month, subconsciously noting the private looking chair which sat by a large bookshelf in the corner which practically had her name on it, she made her way down a corridor towards the bedrooms. She walked through the third door in her right, still thrumming her fingers against her leg, and took note of the bunk bed. She huffed lightly, mind whizzing through possible ways one might take advantage of such a piece of furniture. And despite hating the idea of being so contained, she quickly flung her bag on the lower bunk deciding she’d rather feel closed in than sleep with her back towards a more-or-less stranger.

She unzipped her duffel, one which in true wizard fashion was deceiving larger on the inside, and began to unpack her belongings, placing them in the trunk provided. Every few seconds she’d glance at the still open door and wonder who’d end up walking in to share with her. All she hoped was that she’d be able to sleep comfortably tonight, without fear of a roommate causing mischief in the late hours. Not unless she too was involved in said mischief - then she was certainly all for it.
Please feel free to come join Sarah’s room if you're looking for a roommate. She probably won't bite.

The second half of summer was here, which meant that she had left the peaceful greens of Ireland behind her. It had been refreshing to stay there instead of in France for the summer. The only condition had been that she go to the Beckett summer ball during the second weekend. It had been an easy term to accept. That was all over now, though, and she was back.

A line had started to form outside the cabin that their group was led to, and Santario looked around the two girls in front of her to see a young boy. Probably his very first year here, she thought as Phaedra seemed to push her way past rather curtly, with a quick apology from the boy he seemed to be on his way to a room as well as the older Ravenclaw and the other Slytherin she knew. While she understood wanting to get into the cabin as she had a bag slung over each shoulder, a duffle on her back, and a small terrarium held in her arms holding her lizard, she did not think that rudeness was necessary. Santario stepped in and took a deep breath, the cabin reminding her of where she grew up, in a way.

Her eyes quickly scanned the area before deciding to trail after the new boy popping her head into the room. “Hey, Welcome to Hogwarts. I am Santario, one of the duelling captains. If you have any questions after you settle in, feel free to ask. I’m going to go find a room myself.” Her silvery French-accented voice lilted. She would stick around long enough to catch his name if he returned the greeting before going off to find a room of her own.

Santario would pick one of the rooms that seemed to balance in the middle spot of the rooms to choose from. Balancing Kahlan’s home in one arm, she managed to open the door to her chosen space for the month. Bunks beds and a set of desks, not a bad set up, she thought to herself as she walked over to a desk and gently set the glass cage down. “Just for a month, then you’ll get your big aquarium back once we return to the dorm.” She said to her softly as she walked over to the bunk beds setting down her camera bag and her new leaf satchel on the bottom bunk before unloading her plain canvas duffle onto the floor.

Across seas again and back to London I am. I just cannot seem to get away from this certain Scottish Castle, can I? A part of me still thinks it was a mistake to leave it in the first place, leaving behind a brother I knew well to attend a school full of foreign people and a foreign language I am now much more proficient in. But, this is an argument old and worn out. Nothing that can be changed now, nor something I want to change now. I am happy where I am. I have friends now, I have a good chance at whatever it is I am pursuing as a future. I would not exchange it for anything in the world.

But my poor brother. He's gone quiet over the years. Part of me thinks that it may have been because we were so close that we struggle to be without one another, a handicap on our ability to grow and flourish without one another's presences. And this is why I left him. We need to be apart to grow stronger. I am glad I am not in the same cabin as him.

Dressed in traditional Durmstrang uniform, I watch the small interaction between a young looking boy and a girl, hanging back until I feel comfortable enough to walk forward and enter the cabin myself.

Glancing about me, I notice the fireplace first. It is said that you can tell much about a homestead by the condition its hearth is in. Beautiful, strange, eerie to a degree, but magnificent. A good many stories will be told around it, I can tell already.

I spot the younger boy by a door. I should leave him to be awestruck. But... No. No, I will not disturb him. He would not like that. I will remain quiet for now.

I sense shyness from him. Just like myself, though I know I am much older and taller than the boy. I don't recognize him from my school, which either means that he is an incoming student or from another school. Perhaps both.

Hefting my luggage, I watch him curiously for a while longer before collapsing gently in front of the fireplace and closing my eyes. Were it up to me, I'd be fine with sleeping out here in the main area, but I know how hard the adults work to keep things running smoothly and maintain the rooms for people to comfortably stay. I will respect their desires, but for now, resting in front of the fireplace is an excellent feeling.

I had heard a rumor about this cabin. Something strange about fire and how it acts in this environment, but it is still light out. I will wait to test my theory. Instead, I entertain myself with a book I withdraw from my travel bag, a certain classic with a signature charm; Gulliver's Travels.

I keep my senses about me, picking up the subtle vibes of the cabin and the people present already. Perhaps some of my fellow classmates will be along shortly.

Then we would have some fun.

Aleksandar hated it.

The filthy train that had brought them straight to Hogwarts had not even provided them with a decent meal on their ridiculously long journey. Sweets and treat were not exactly filling or nutritious but it was the only thing they had had access to. It stood to reason that they would at least arrive to a grand feast already prepared, but no. What they did arrive to was a Muggle Scouts Camp setup, Professors registering them and going over the rules they were supposed to follow throughout their time here, being chaperoned to one of multiple cabins sporting Magical Creatures themed flags. What a drag.

The cabin his own group was led to - Phoenix. How strangely fitting. - seemed adequate enough once they actually entered. Rustic, comfortable, earthy. There was a fireplace, which seemed like a horrendous idea in a cabin of near two dozen people but he trusted the place to be fireproof at the very least. Though, considering the things he had heard about Hogwarts...

Shaking his head, Aleksandar strode quickly through the supposed living area, foregoing any occupied rooms to push through the first semi-open door. If he had expected actual private rooms he would have been disappointed, even if one bunkbed a room was still better than a whole dorm full of people. With lazy steps forward he dropped his bag on the bottom bunk and kicked off his shoes before settling on the bed. He was here for a reason, he reminded himself. A good reason, an important one. He could deal with a month of sharing a room with a stranger in a cabin full of potentially rowdy students at a notoriously dangerous school.

Staring at the door he had left open behind him, Aleksandar reached for his bag to pull out an envelope, fingertips tracing the name written on it in pale blue ink. Just a month. All he could hope for now was that whoever his roommate was going to be didn't snore.

Santario yawned and looked around the tiny room while she wondered who else she might get in her room. Not that it really mattered; she did not exactly plan on spending a ton of time stuck in the cabin anyway. Summer camp usually meant taking many photographs since she found less and less time to do that during the year. Plus, if she did it at summer camp, she got the chance to get the other school's students.

San opened the green leaf satchel that she had placed on the bottom bunk and started pulling out a couple of journals, one empty and the other full of duelling statistics, mainly on the last year's teams of the other houses. She also grabbed a fountain pen and four different ink cartridges before setting them all down on the desk on which she had set Kahaln’s tank.

Her eyes slid back over to the satchel, which now only had ten individually wrapped hand pies in it. Her Irish side was a bit over the top when it came to sending her care packages or sending her away with food, and now it was no different. Though they probably assumed that she shared with her friends because there was no way she was packing away that much food monthly, and sending treats was one of the ways that they showed their love. Since she had already consumed 3 of them on the train, she was not very hungry, but San did not want them to go bad, so she grabbed her satchel and made her way back out into the common area.

“Hello.” She greeted the boy who had placed himself down in front of the fireplace. Her eyes had drawn to another open room to see another unfamiliar boy who also must have come in after her, though he looked miserable to be here. If she caught his eye, she would smile, something San would typically not have done, but she was trying. Trying really hard not to be so closed off all the time, and it was already taxing.

San removed the wrapped hand pies from her satchel and placed them on a coffee table with care. “Hey! I have some extra meat and potato hand pies that my grandparents made if anyone is hungry. There are ten left!” She called out to the open air, hoping someone would come to eat them. Naturally, they would not be hot anymore, but they had been freshly baked that morning and should still be delicious.

When Sarah had finished unpacking her bag, filling the trunk with clothes, books, and a few too many pairs of shoes, she let out a soft sigh. No one had entered her room yet, something she wasn’t sure if she was pleased about or not. Realistically she knew that she had friends in other cabins who she’d most likely be spending a lot of her time with over the summer, but it might have been nice to at least try and meet someone new.

It was that thought that had her grabbing a book she’d hidden away in her trunk – her mother’s old copy of To Kill a Mockingbird – and walking back out to the common area. She watched as a few of her cabin mates seemed to be making themselves comfortable, peaking through doors left ajar in poorly hidden curiosity. Her eyes landed on a boy sitting in front of the fireplace, book in hand and she felt her lips quirk as her fingers tightened around the one in her own hands. She wanted to ask what it was he was reading – perhaps she knew it, or perhaps it would be something she could add to her list. Of course, she’d actually need to strike up a conversation with him for her to actually find out. She rolled her eyes, since when was she unable to talk.

“Hey, what are you reading?” She asked the boy as she took a seat in an armchair to the side of the fireplace. Talking to people had never been the issue for the Slytherin, it was opening up she had the problem with. But she was working on it, rebuilding her ability to trust. And this was summer camp, for Merlin’s sake. It wasn’t as though she had to spill all of her deepest darkest secrets around a campfire before everything sang kumbaya and ate smores. Although Andy had assured her that she simply had to try one of those.

When her house’s duelling captain spoke, Sarah offered her a smile. The two didn’t really know each other very well, but Sarah was now a part of the duelling team herself, so she was sure they’d be getting to know one another better over the next year. “May I?” She asked the other girl, reaching forward to take one of the pies. “I’m so hungry I’m not even going to ask what the mysterious unnamed ‘meat’ is,” She said with a light laugh before taking a bite, catching a few fallen crumbs in her hand.

It was finally upon them. Students had begun flocking to the grounds for their cabin assignments and there was no shortage of them which to Elena supposed wasn't a bad thing after all. New faces, new memories as the brunette loaded down with her bag slung over her shoulder and gripping Flutter's cage in the other hand, the brown barn owl taking in all the details with a rather keen eye as the Gryffindor flocked to the rather growing line of students that was going to be dorming in the Phoneix Cabin as it had been so deemed. Elena didn't know how exactly they had been sorted but if you asked her, a phoneix sounded like a pretty nifty little creature to be a representative of so the girl wasn't complaining as she joined the throng of students who also seemed to be heading towards the same series of cabins as she took in her surroundings. It seemed like a nifty little area as the fourth-year made her way up and into the little abode that was the Phoneix Cabin.

Upon first glance, Elena reckoned they had probably gotten the better end of the deal as she took in the bunk beds, the desks and furniture as well as the series of rooms. It appeared that she wasn't the first to have entered here as evidenced by some lingering students that were already well on their way on making this cabin something of a home for the month that they would be here though they weren't any faces she was too terribly familiar with nodding her head in greeting. Deciding she might as well settle on a room first, the Gryffindor girl darted off to where the rooms were nestled at first settling on one that was situated the farthest from the common area swinging her bag and trunk onto the top bunk. "I'll be back, I promise and then I'll let you out." She'd reply to Flutters before slipping into some jeans and a short-sleeved shirt to make her way back down to the gathering area which she had been in not too long ago.

Typically, Elena would usually stick to her dorm or room not exactly too keen on mingling but these weren't her dorm-mates. These were totally new faces and it might as well be prudent to at least get to know a few faces here and there. After all, if they were going to be stuck here for a month with each other, it seemed like the first thing to do as she carved a path to the nearest armchair if there were any open just as the offer of food sailed through the air in the form of pies. It was tempting to say the least but if one rifled through her bag, it was already laden with perhaps too much delicacies that she had bought off the Trolley Witch so for now, the brunette would simply be content with her armchair and her copy of Magical Places and Plants. In truth however, she was barely paying any attention to the novle which she had read too many times to count more interested in seeing who she'd be spending this month-long summer with.
