Rescue Mission pv Winnie Harper Finished

Cosmo was shocked to hear about Winnie's father, but tried to keep it off her face. She didn't understand how anyone could hate magic, let alone try to stop someone else from having it. I mean was that even allowed? Cosmo shook her head very slightly to focus on responding to Winnie rather than thinking about revenge on her dad.

"Winnie... I'm so sorry that must have been awful, did your mum know he was doing that?" Cosmo didn't have any first hand experience of bad parenting, but she had seen how it effected her first and only friend outside of Hogwarts. Thinking about anyone else going through similar things to him made Cosmo's blood boil, and everything in her tiny eleven year old body wanted to give bad parents hell. Because Cosmo had started to think about Dylan it took a bit more than a head shake to focus on the present again, but eventually she managed, and she gave her new friend what she hoped was a supportive -rather than murderous- smile.

"It's brilliant that you can be optimistic, and I'm also really glad we got to meet. For one thing I know I wouldn't have done as good a job with these fellas!" she nodded at the bag with the nest inside, grinning. The conversation moved on, and Cosmo listened in excitement about Winnie's home, but she tucked away a small slice of anger for the other girl's father.

"You have animals!" Cosmo exclaimed, eyes and smile wide, "which kinds?" This was possibly one of the best discoveries Cosmo was making. Despite living in the country, her and her mother only had household pets and the wildlife that was constantly being rescued and re-homed, so Cosmo was always excited to hear about what she deemed 'Proper Farms'.

Cosmo held her breath as Winnie finished placing the nest, but once it was securely tucked she squealed happily and broke into a short round of applause. "Good job Winnie! It looks perfect, thank you for helping!"

She stepped down from the log and held up a hand, offering Winnie help down if she wanted it. "Now I know you said your mum would understand, but I feel bad for your flowers, do you want help picking more?"

Winnie was surprised by Cosmo's comment. It's not that it hadn't been awful, because it had, but rather the statement about her mother. "Yes, she knew. She tried to help sneak me magic books from my grandparent's shop." Even her own father's parent had acted against him. "It wasn't so bad, they managed to get him to agree to let me come here!" That was what was really important, most of the magic she'd learn would be from Hogwarts, right?

"Hey, don't be so sure. You would have managed something. You seem smart." She encouraged her. Cosmo seemed very sweet and compassionate, there was no doubt she would have figured it out, but Winnie was happy to be able to be her partner-in-bird-saving crime for this event! Her face broke out into a grin at that response. "All sorts. Muggle farm kinds. Pigs, cows, chickens, cats, dogs..." She explained as she clung onto the tree. "Oh, and we also have a few sheep, although most of our money comes from the milk and eggs. The sheep are always such fun to play with. I have two dogs, Spot and Dot, they're border collies, great herding dogs." She explained, excited that Cosmo was interested in her farm life.

Winnie couldn't stop herself from giving a small bow at that round of applause, gripping the tree branches as she carefully scurried back down to the base of the tree, accepting Cosmo's hand when she offered it. She didn't want the mama bird to return and see humans around her next. "It was a team effort." She reminded the girl, the suggestion causing her eyes to light up. "Oh? You wouldn't mind?" She was having fun with the Gryffindor and didn't want their adventure to end just yet.

It was good to hear that at least Winnie's mum was on her side. Cosmo breathed a small sigh of relief, Winnie was right. At least she had ended up at Hogwarts, after school she could go somewhere far from her father and make her own choices rather than have to convince someone else. Cosmo blushed from the compliment, and determined to make sure the other girl felt appreciated too. Then Winnie started to list animals on her farm and Cosmo practically started jumping up and down in excitement.

"Oh wow! That's so many animals!! We have lots of farms around our house with animals and sometimes people let me help them milking or herding," Cosmo's eyes gleamed, "once I even helped a goat give birth. But goodness, that sounds like the perfect life! And your dogs name's," she clasped her hands together, "they're adorable! My dog is a little Chihuahua and I love her very much but she gets tired pretty quickly. Her name's Ruby."

Cosmo was glad Winnie had accepted her offer, and nodded vigorously, excited at how quickly she was taking a liking to the other girl.

"I absolutely don't mind! It's a perfect day for it, and spring is really starting properly now, I'm sure we'll find some beautiful flowers," Cosmo smiled softly and gathered her bag up, swinging it across her shoulder. She looked around them, taking in the lush fresh grass, and occasional tree dotted across the grounds. There had definitely been flowers around that she had noticed but she couldn't remember where just then.

"Do you want to go somewhere specific or should we just wander?"

Winnie's eyes lit up at the adorable Gryffindor's reaction. She was always happy to talk about animals with others. "Maybe you can visit our farm someday! We could always use help collecting the hen's eggs. They get sassy about it sometimes." She chuckled as a memory of one hen clucking angrily at her came to mind. "Ruby is such an elegant name. She sounds like she should be royalty. Perhaps she's not used to lifting a finger and that's why she tires easily?" Winnie suggested with a small grin. It wasn't that she thought Cosmo spoiled the dog, more so she thought the comparison was funny.

"That's true. I just love the spring weather, don't you? There's something about new growth that just makes me feel so hopeful." The Ravenclaw sighed happily, peering up at their little tree friends and smiling. They had done well rescuing them, and now the little birds stood a flying chance. She was quickly collecting her possessions off the ground and shoving them back inside of her satchel, setting any remaining flowers at the base of the tree. The mother bird could use them to repair her nest if she needed to. "There's a lot of wild flowers growing near the lake, we could start there?" She suggested to her new friend with a small smile. "Do you have a favourite flower, Cosmo? I really love daisies, sunflowers, and roses, but... I guess I love all flowers anyways." She grinned as she started to walk towards the lake, walking backwards at first so she could still see her friend.

Cosmo almost chuckled out loud trying to picture a sassy chicken, she knew the ones next door sometimes sounded quite indignant, but imagining them looking sassy too was a whole new hilarity. "I would absolutely love to come help with eggs and visit you!" she enthused, excited that Winnie had suggested such a thing so soon after their meeting. Cosmo let out something close to a guffaw, "you're absolutely right, Ruby does act as though she owns the whole house and that we're both her servants," Cosmo was almost sure her mother had made the same joke at least once.

Spring was Cosmo's favourite season, and she beamed when Winnie sung its praises. Cosmo followed Winnies eyes and looked up to the nest as well, feeling very good about what they'd both done. A thought came upon her suddenly. "Hey Winnie!" she turned and faced the other girl, eyes and smile wide, "maybe as they grow up we'll be able to watch them and see them take their first steps and fly and-" Cosmo cut herself off and took a big breath of air, "yeah!!"

The lake sounded a perfect place to search, and maybe if the weather stayed nice they could even take a quick dip, so Cosmo nodded happily at Winnie, excited to share the joy of flower collecting with someone else. "Those are really nice flowers!" she replied, carefully tucking the information away for if she ever collected flowers for her new friend. "We have a sunflower field close to my house, and every summer they're such a gorgeous yellow, you should come see them! A chickens for sunflowers arrangement." Cosmo considered for a moment, flowers flicking through her mind at a rate of knots. "I know it might be a little silly but I really like cosmos flowers," she felt her cheeks heat up a little, even though she knew Winnie wouldn't judge, "there's so many different colours and when they grow in a field its so nice just to see them sprinkled about." Cosmo skipped happily after Winnie, eager to continue their talk and walk by the lake.
