At Kazuo's comment she simply smiled, any snide remarks were forgotten when he flashed her a smile of his own. What a charming host he was. "You're right; I would definitely remember if we had met." She grabbed a handful of her gown and curtsied. "It's a pleasure to meet you formally, Mr. Shimada." She wanted to be respectful for her hero's sake, especially after she her meeting with Jack... This man was obviously a friend of his and Dee's date. Two people she admired! He was perhaps someone she should admire too, and if he was responsible for the beautiful ball... Then she definitely admired him.

Only when someone wished the group a 'hello' did Winnie look up from poor Dee's arm. At the sight of the adorable Hercules (Jake), Winnie had to stop herself from audibly 'aw-ing'. He looked so adorable in his costume with his stuffed dog pressed up like a Pegasus. "Hello! You look amazing! I love your little Pegasus." She didn't have much time to speak to the boy, however, because Mathias was responding to her 'liquid gift'.

She gasped audibly when the Slytherin boy suddenly began to strip in front of everyone. "W-What are you doing?!" Her face burned bright red. She had just discovered that she liked boys and now one was suddenly stripping down to his knickers in front of her. She gasped and stared down at the costume... Then back up at Mathias. He was bare. In the middle of a school event! She glanced over at Ruka as if he could somehow make this craziness stop, and then back at Mathias. "P-Put your clothing back on, you absolute eejit!" She sputtered, the Irish insult straining to get passed her lips. Winnie was not usually want to insult others, but she was taken aback. "If you don't... I'll... I'll toss them into the lake, and then you'll have to spend the rest of the evening prancing around in your knickers." She said this as if the Slytherin actually cared, and considering that he had just stripped down... It was doubtful he did.

Then Ruka stepped up, her knight in firey armor. A Gryffindor through and through it seemed that he wanted to protect her again! She blinked over at him in confusion at that request. "... Okay." She wasn't going to deny a request from Ruka. Whatever he wanted. She dropped the clothing and stepped back just in time to witness him shoving his torch into the pile of clothing. She gasped. Ruka was defending her honour, how sweet! "Oh, but what will he wear?" She was concerned at first, because he had to wear SOMETHING. No way he could walk around in his damn knickers all night long. She focused her attention back on Mathias. "Perhaps a table cloth would do just as well? Or were you planning to try and woo or kiss someone else tonight? Then again, it's not like you'll ask them beforehand, so it shouldn't matter what you wear." Served the Slytherin right for being mean.

Interesting, yes, that seemed like a good summary for the group of people that had formed around Kazuo - and the rest of the people present, too. "Maybe the music is scaring them off," she replied at the concern for the people stuck in the Underworld, mock-skepticism on her face, eyebrows pulled together. "Your choices?"

Dee had barely arrived, greeted her friends, when Winnie doused the unknown boy in some drink she had gotten - acting like it was an accident, but honestly as bad at pretending as Dee herself would be. Said boy then proceeded to strip like it was the most natural thing in the world. There was an absurdity to the situation that took her a moment to process, and she absentmindedly reached out to pat the girl who was now clinging to her arm and spluttering, at a loss of words at the situation, on the head with her apple-free hand.

"Don't you think you'll be cold like this?" she asked the boy curiously, a bemused smile tugging on her lips, more concerned with practicality than decency. It was late May, yes, but the evenings in northern Scotland were cool still. Too cold to walk around bare-chested, in any case, no matter how confident this boy apparently was. Cleaning and drying his clothes with magic wouldn't have been that much work. When he handed it to Winnie, however, an expression of distaste spread on her face, replacing the slight amusement.

But then Ruka stepped in, anyway, making quick work of the clothes, and any issue of coldness. Setting the clothes on fire, yeah, that should warm him right up. "Ruka," she began, slightly startled, pulling Winnie a step backwards and away from any potentially flaming fabric. There was a bit of concern on her face, but she didn't seem in much of a hurry to step in. After all this bit of fabric and torch was unlikely to catch much else aflame. Right? "Don't you think it's a bit early to set Kazuo's ball on fire? It's only just begun." Not that she was necessarily surprised that Ruka would be setting things or people on fire, but there was plenty time for that later.

At least they were providing a good distraction from her real purpose this evening. Ileen was still nowhere in sight, and this was rather good entertainment, honestly.

"Don't you think you'll be cold like this?"

"Yeah-yeah, a little," he admitted. It was cool, the night air had a sort of chill to it. He had work to do, people to annoy and clothes to hand over to a desperate girl.

"W-What are you doing?!"

The girl was flushed in the face. Yes, that was the right reaction to seeing chiseled perfection. And yeah, she stared. Who could blame her, had he the emotional bandwidth for it he might have complained and said he felt like a piece of meat but let's be frank -- he took the lingering look as a compliment.

When she looked away and back at him he would let out a small laugh. "Yes, perfection is still standing next to you."

"P-Put your clothing back on, you absolute eejit!"

"Try not to stare." Good. Good. Shout, make sure everyone else notices him too. He would give her a little flex of his bicep. It was probably bigger than Jack's.

"If you don't... I'll... I'll toss them into the lake, and then you'll have to spend the rest of the evening prancing around in your knickers."

"So..." he took a step closer, the sort where he hung just a bit too close for social convention. "If I do not get dressed this very instant you will do something to ensure that I would not be able to for the duration of the evening." He cocked his mouth to the side as if in feigned thought. "I can meet you mid-way doll," yeah he called her 'doll' just to piss off the boys "and put them back on after you get them nice and tidy. Free show," he spoke a bit with his hands as he added the free show on the end.

Ah and here is prince... uh... matchstick to the rescue.

"Thought you stuck up types all had your personal house elves to do your chores for you," squint-eyed youth Jack-adjacent would snap. Looks like he found a nerve, the boy was a bit of a white knight after all. How droll. "Or did you manage to revolt even them so much you have to resort to looking for human slaves?"

"Like you have?" He was of course referring to Winnie, the girl he had been passively ordering about like a house elf while hardly giving the girl a glance. "Not my fault I find myself envious that you have such an attractive" he smiled enough to expose his incisors "...service-girl. Besides, unlike you I am asking her to fix what she damaged. What's your excuse?"

"Drop that, Winnie," Ruka ordered his human house elf.

"You're forgetting please" he reminded the Gryffindor with a verbal prod. For all his posturing, he seemed to care 'deeply' about this girl's non-existent honor despite the fact that he had not once appreciated her. "Does she only get you drinks?" He looked over at her, it was an embarrassing sight really.

"... Okay."

No argument, no autonomy.

"Stop. Sit. Stay. Have some self-respect woman" Mathias rebuked her. That was worse than cleaning the clothes that SHE damaged. Not that he would explain any of this, rather it looked like a lion wanted to get a word or several in edge-wise. A pause while he granted the lion his moment.

"Should take care of your own laundry if you don't want to risk it getting damaged."

The boy's torch would touch the clothes unimpeded and the incredibly flammable fibers would set afire. "If you wanted me to stay this way, you could have just said so," he announced with a confident grin. Most boys would be rightfully intimidated by the mostly undressed youth standing at their side in front of their date. His name was Pride not Shame, "but to tell you the truth the girl is out of both your leagues." Compliment number two if anyone is counting, zero for the Bobbsey twins who moments earlier seemed hell bent on getting away from her and dismissing her entirely to obstinately standing up to a lone disrespectful guy at a party. "Closer to my league really," not that he had any particular interest in anyone here at this party he certainly was interested in their reaction.

They would have two choices --

One, start saying please and thank you. Be a bit kinder. Jealously tell Pride off and give the pathetic thing some hope. Or two, relinquish her to him, they would miss her and they would feel degraded by doing so. When a toy you never cared for is snatched by another - you always want it back in your sticky hands.

"Ruka," one dissatisfied woman already. Wonderful. Dealla and Winnie both would step back from the flames of his attire. "Don't you think it's a bit early to set Kazuo's ball on fire? It's only just begun." That would be twice it was said -- zKazuo's ball once by the boy himself and again by his lovely date. Levi was going to enjoy hearing about this sense of ownership over the ball that was allegedly developed by a small group of students, not just the one. That is if his date ever shown up. Being light-headed after knowing his lips was absolutely understandable.

"Oh, but what will he wear?"

...She was not particularly bright was she? He internally cringed if it was only now that she thought of this.

"Perhaps a table cloth would do just as well? Or were you planning to try and woo or kiss someone else tonight? Then again, it's not like you'll ask them beforehand, so it shouldn't matter what you wear."

"What are you trying to say?" Just come out and say it. "Jealous?" He took a step forward and extended a hand. "How about this, a dance to keep me warm and perhaps change my bad-boy ways. Fix me. That is," he eyed her two kinda-sorta dates with a terrible twinkle in his eye. "Unless her dance card is filled for the whole evening with you two?" He knew it was not, you don't dance with the help but they also looked like they might have fared poorly in Grammar School where they would have learned to share their toys.

"I love your Ball, Kaz. The entertainment is spectacular."

Oh yes, it was certainly something. Spectacular though, he wasn’t entirely sure if that was the right word for what he was about to witness.

Not to get ahead of the drama, Kazuo briefly turned his attention to Jake as the young Hufflepuff greeted them, taking in the boy’s outfit. “Ah, the most famous of Heroes has finally arrived!” He greeted Jake with a grin. “Our Ball finally has a Hercules to protect it from monsters!” There was something delightful to Kazuo, seeing Jake dressed up not in some child’s interpretation of sophistication but in a properly childish costume. Jake just being the child he was instead of trying to be something he wasn’t. It was a bit scary as well, the sweet innocence the boy somehow managed to carry with him despite everything. “And you brought Pegasus as well! Don’t let him eat all the apples.” He joked, indicating the fruits laid out on the nearby tables. “I like your costume, Jake. Jack’s not just any goat. He’s the most famous goat in Ancient Greece.”

Then a moment to respond to Dealla, giving her a slight smirk of amusement. “If it’s the music holding them back then let them linger in the dark. That just means the dance floor will be all ours.” He replied. “I had some help putting it together. Asked around for suggestions. Threw out the boring orchestral waltzes and added some culture. I have faith that the lovely Aphrodite knows how to dance to modern music?” He teased a bit.

His attention would inevitably be drawn back to Matthias though, as the Slytherin did the unexpected. In fact, Matthias seemed to be doing many unexpected things tonight. Kazuo’s eyes narrowed and his head cocked to the side, a pose he often struck when thinking. Though he appeared to be watching Matthias strip down to his boxers his attention wasn’t fully there. Everyone else was more than capable of being offended, whether by Pride’s near-nudity or his treatment of Winnie. Neither of which particularly bothered Kazuo. He’d seen more nudity at the onsen back home and Matthias was hardly a piece of art to be admired. As for Winnie, she’d brought it on herself so he really couldn’t say he had much sympathy for her. In Matthias’ shoes, he may well have done the same, after all.

The back and forth between Winnie and Matthias was dull. Her threat to drench his already-wet attire made little sense if she really wanted him to put his clothes back on and Matthias pounced on it, immediately turning it around on her. Yet Ruka’s reaction was a bit unexpected. Not the lighting things on fire part so much as the defending Winnie part. Why did Ruka care about this girl whose own bad choice had gotten her into this mess? His gaze flickered to the soon-to-be flaming cloth then to Dealla as she chided Ruka a bit. “Well I expected fire at some point and his costume was rather hideous…” He murmured in response with a practiced shrug of apathy.

He turned his gaze away from the group, eyes drifting to those students who had made it down and were wandering or chatting. Erin was giving last rights to the lantern - how thoughtful of her. Nothing else of note seemed to be happening. Just a boy in his underwear asking a girl to dance. Matthias’ determination to be wholly inappropriate was fascinating and Kazuo couldn’t help but to wonder what the boy was trying to achieve. There had to be some reason for the show, after all. He parsed back through the strange conversation briefly, attempting to draw out the strings. Matthias was complaining about Levi dumping him, an obvious lie. Ruka was talking about how Matthias had been kissing and Winnie brought up kissing again. Jack had mentioned a girl punching Matthias - or rather, mention of violence plus Matt’s developing bruise implied the punching. Ruka was bossing Winnie around and the girl seemed more than happy to do whatever he asked but her eyes seemed rather glued to Jack. Jack was… oblivious? Yes. Jack was oblivious. And easily riled by Matthias’ baiting. Was Matthias waiting for Levi to appear?

Unfortunately, he was also waiting for someone to appear. “I hope they arrive soon. Ruka might burn down the entire Ball if they take too long.” Kazuo joked to Dee, casting a smirk at Ruka.

"Mayhaps you should watch for the ssshadows they cast."

Xailah would murmur. "No... no," Erin would reply. "The darkness comes from something else," although she was not certain what. She had seen it, the skittering blackness. The corporeal manifestation of darkness, but it did not hunger for her. It hungered for something else, for them. It had somehow differentiated between the two - Erin and not Erin or that was how her mind simplified it.

"We are being watched, you're being infected."

We and you.

Pat pat, it was gone, buried and away.

Whoever gave her the piece of advice had come and gone with that once comment. Erin would look at the ground and see if she cast a shadow. What if it was gone? A wave of panic she would look down and around, it had to be there somewhere. Ah, there it was safe and sound. Nobody stole it.

She would wiggle her hand and watch the shadow dance in accord. No, it is me and mine she assured herself. There was a bit of a ruckus between Burnett and someone that looked a lot like him, maybe the Prefect Jack she was not certain. They seemed to be impassioned over something, they were shouting but all she heard was warbling noise. They had a pair of pretty girls between the four of them, she wondered which one was Jack's date. She felt sick thinking about it. She slammed her hand down on the shadow, leaving a small dent in the ground.

It was over. Move on. She was not able to compete. It was too late.

"Miss..." someone called out. She did not turn around. "Miss?" She would see the looming shadow he cast, yes he cast a shadow also. She slapped the shadow for good measure with her hand.

"Go away nerd," Erin grumbled. He had reached her personal space, she could smell him. He had a stale scent, like cardboard being left in the heat too long. Not repulsive, not appetizing. Honestly the lack of dichotomy has more concerning than a vile stench.

She would stubbornly look away but he would kneel down in the line of her vision. "Not interested dude," Erin repeated with more edge to her words. She was agitated and she did not like having her space invaded nor did she have a penchant for strangers.

"Your... scars are showing."

She would shift a bit, reach back with a dirt-covered hand and shake her unbrushed hair. "So?" She replied defiantly. "Not like people will remember a thing," or care for that matter. There were events that nobody forgot, terrible things but they go on the next day as if it never happened. They lose friends and it is as if they never existed. Does she think anyone notices or even cares about anything? No, this was a school of narcissists and liars. She could hardly tell many of them apart.

"I believe I have seen you before. Class? I think you are my year in fact."

Class? A guttural chuckle that seemed a bit too low to be coming from a little girl would bubble from someplace within the girl. "Class? unlikely," she was never there.

"Allow me to do you this one mercy -- what you seek is in the lake, not here."

"Uh huh, sure? Where Tom was made," she replied. She did not sound particularly interested for one reason and one alone - she did not trust him. She did not know him, he had no reason to 'help' her and the few that she had gotten to know had made it abundantly clear that she was alone. Alone is where she would stay.

"I would show you where but I have done nothing to earn your trust,"

"Yeah," she replied as he addressed the elephant. "Why would I trust you?" She would stop pondering the shadows Xailah had turned her onto and look at the boy. He looked weird with his hair all in directions and his matching clothes. Skin too pale, inside too much. Eyes too blue, like marbles. "I don't think so," she muttered.

Just a trick of the lighting they said...

Spring was sparsely populated in comparison to the underworld. There was a girl wearing a blanket, well sheet who had a seriously bad case of bed head talking to Vlad. That was her wasn't it? She stared longer than she should have at the girl. She vaguely recognized her, of course the passage of years and the girl's diminished sanity did her no favors. They shared a dorm, a house, a year and a gender - one would have thought that they would have know one another better but she did not.

Scars. Those don't belong on wizards - remedial magic was more than enough to repair most injuries. Whatever afflicted her back was magical in nature. She had several but they were dark black splotches she kept well hidden beneath the bodice of her gown. It had spread some, like a sluggishly spreading cancer. She knew what her scars meant but 'Ryan's were different.' Vlad had his own theories and they were mad but the scene correlated with his description. The girl seemed 'troubled' to put it mildly, disordered, mentally ill, hapless and hopeless. He was doing her a favor but she was just not going to look. It did not concern her or them, a selfish conclusion to come to but she was tired of putting herself second.

Look away.

She would pick another scene and immediately regret it when she saw Mathias in his underpants. Not there! She would quickly turn, shutting her eyes and raising a hand as a blinder. That was an image she would never get to unsee. "Gawd Matt - did you have to?" It was like seeing your best friend's little brother in less than you ever wanted to see in all their gangly, awkward glory. My eeeeeyeees!

A flash of light and --woosh!

Seems so. She was not going to look, her brain was already seared with that image. The shameless youth was going to be their problem, not hers.

It was safe to say there wasn't much expectation from the ball. Something was bound to come up and ruin the whole thing, past experience only proved that. Nonetheless, he always made the effort to dress up in his best clothes and show up to the event as if nothing was going to happen. A small part of him hoped that wouldn't be the case for one year, yet with what has been going on recently it was sure looking to be the most chaotic one yet.

Walking through the entrance of the ball he took a quick glance around the room, instantly noticing some familiar faces and new ones alike. One of them was Erin Ryan, who had great pleasure in destroying a harmless lantern before him. She had always been a wild animal every time he saw her, something that clearly didn't reflect the older girl's age by the very least. Gray could only shake his head in disappointment before slowly making his way over to the dismantled source of light.

Along the way, another girl caught his eye. Santario Martin, a girl who he hadn't spoken to for a long while. Percival had seen her around the halls of the castle now and then, but he didn't have the interest in talking to the currently wondering Slytherin. It was probably best to stray clear for now, since she always had that bitter attitude that showed itself when talking to him.

Snapping his gaze away from Santario, he stood beside Erin and crouched down to the lantern. He grabbed a piece of the broken object and sighed, regretfully thinking there was more to come as the night went on "Well done Erin, you demolished a completely innocent lantern..." he said before looking up at her, his tone filled with sarcasm "Just be careful alright? we don't want a repeat of human fireballs do we" questioned the boy as he got back up, his foot slowly sliding the lantern under a nearby table to fix later.

Not bothering to check if she heard him or not, he poured himself a cold cup of water on the same table and sipped away at his contents. Examing the room for anything out of place.

Santario had not been walking swiftly more of a leisurely stroll; it was enough to catch his final statement. The word kill made her blood run cold and her mind race. Surely there had to be another option; this was not the end-all… It could not be. A frown creased her brow slightly as thoughts ran their course. She refused to believe that they had to die; perhaps, what if they could kill the hags instead? Not likely without the professors. Then again, as far as Santario was concerned, she was already running on borrowed time. Could she make a deal herself that bartered a trade? One life for another. Would they take her over him?

Her fingers laced in front of her to stop them from fidgeting; she needed to remain passive to the outside world as if nothing were wrong. There could be no hint of what she was thinking of doing. More importantly, Thomas could never know her thought process because if he truly did see her as his closest friend, he might try to stop her…

More people entered from the Underworld, distractions. Her eyes landed on a boy she had hardly spoken to in an entire year. Granted, she had hardly spoken to anyone in the whole year aside from duellists. Her bitter attitude was universal to those who knew her superficially, quickly weeding out the people who were not worth knowing her true heart. After all, the closer people got to you, the easier it was for them to hurt you. Granted, this boy had already, in a way, hurt her. Indirectly, perhaps, but the two scars marring her chest hidden by delicately pinned silks could have been avoided if he had not reacted so rashly and listened. The mosp venom and following concussion from falling from a broom had left her in the hospital wing for days.

Her eyes lingered on Percival Grey. Did she genuinely hold hard feelings against him? No, she did not. She might have for a while afterward, but that was a year ago, probably just barely twelve years old in a creature attack neither of them had more than likely never seen before. In time she had come to understand his actions, but she made no effort to tell him, just as he made no effort to apologize. Instead, she had treated him like she treated almost everyone else around her, indifferently.

Her eyes moved from the boy as he spoke to Erin Ryan while removing the broken lantern from a position where it might easily be tripped over by some innocent bystander. Santario would continue her stroll, hands clasped in front of her observing her peers.

The explanation to Kazuo's music choices drew a surprised bubble of laughter, Dee cocking her head to listen to the next song. "Educating pure-bloods, are we?" she asked, visibly entertained. "I think they might disagree on your idea of culture." Dee barely knew how to dance to any music at all, but sure, she could hop around to modern music just as well as to classical. Better, probably, less risk of stepping on anyone's feet. Thankfully, she didn't much fear making a fool of herself, at least not over something like this. "Opinions on my dancing differ depending on who you ask," she replied, grinning. "You'll have to risk it and find out."

But the dance would be kept for later, the odd situation between Ruka, Winnie, and the by now half-naked boy oddly disentangled from any conversations going on around.

Dee's eyebrow quirked up in amusement at the hesitant admission that, yes, he was kind of cold, but apparently comfort took a lower priority than his other goals. Which were... what? Being as rude as possible? Making people uncomfortable? He was doing a decent job at both, although Dee obviously wasn't the target of whatever reaction he was trying to provoke, giving her the freedom to look at the situation from a spectator's position, as she was not (yet) attached enough to Winnie to take the insults against the girl personally, the way Ruka was doing.

Terrible personality or just an act, she wouldn't guess at his motives, nor at the purpose of the increasingly absurd conversation. No matter that he was acting like the sleazy villain in a bad outdated rom-com, Dee was getting bored. Mostly because of the lack of attention she was receiving, honestly, used to being in the middle of things instead of the watcher on the sidelines. Mix in a little petty jealousy that Ruka hadn't had more than a word to spare for her since she'd arrived, and Dee was losing interest fast. Ruka and Winnie could take it from here, certainly. Or Ruka could. Winnie still seemed primarily flustered, although adorably so, she had to admit. The girl just seemed all around kind of... fluffy. Like a puppy.

So she turned back to the conversation with Kazuo. "No doubt that he will," she replied cheerfully. "I suppose that would take some of our impact if everything is already in flames." Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully for a moment. "Which reminds me, I wanted to go look at some of those... Trials, was it? Preferably before they get here. Or the fire spreads." Another glance at the trio in their various states of undress and indignation, a smile for Kazuo, and she turned away. "I'll be back in a bit, shouldn't take too long. Keep an eye out for our guests of honour?"

Entering the festival was a strange-looking boy with cardboard armor, painted a dark grey (though the paint was not expertly done enough to conceal the fact that it was poorly constructed). Though it was meant to be Spartan in design, his artistic vision may not have been entirely realized. Despite this, Thomas carried himself with his usual pride. His face was covered by the "helmet" he made, but his authoritative gait juxtaposed with his rather minuscule stature likely made his identity clear as day to anyone who had met him. Unfortunately for the "anonymous" boy, his presence was positively conspicuous, particularly with how he stalked around the edges of the area constantly looking in.

Recent stressors had made Thomas unbelievably paranoid about Hogwarts, and its supposed safety. His dueling partner (and, debatably, only real friend) grievously injured in an incident in their common room had sent him careening off the edge he'd rather haphazardly been dancing upon. They were always watching, they were always trying to cause harm. To destroy the student body from the inside out. To traumatize a generation of students that had such potential, only to uphold the oppressive status quo.

Thomas saw through it all. His perception was sharp. He would keep this Spring Festival safe from them, and he would gather intelligence in order to plot his next moves. The gears were turning, there were irons in the fire, and the young Ravenclaw might well have been a tightly coiled spring with how prepared he was to leap into action.

For now, however, Thomas would be content with wandering the perimeter, appearing aimless and bored almost as he snooped, ears and eyes open as he watched both people and their shadows in fear that either may strike out at him.
