William sat out on the grass watching the varies creatures fly past. The weather was quite nice this time of year; the wind blew across the grounds, the sky was clear other then the occasional cloud, and the temperature was almost perfect. His brown hair flowed along with the wind in the crazy way it always did. No matter what he tried he could never fix it or make it stop, but in the growing months he stopped caring mostly. He was wearing his school uniform, knowing he was getting it insanely dirty, but he was ready for the amount of cleaning it would take.
He continued to look up at the birds as they flew above head. For some reason they were calming. Unlike the beasts of the ground, who's hooves and paws pounded on the earth, the animals of the sky flew gracefully without much of a trace. You would have to look at them or they would have to draw attention to themselves for you to notice them. To him there was also something mystical about the way they were free in flight. Especially in the weather like this, they drifted in the air with a calmness to them.
He straightened the back of his uniform and laid back on the grass as a bird's song began to play from the trees. He had his right hand behind his head as he took in a few deep breaths, taking in the wonderful breeze. He wanted to be social today, but with the weather like this and the way he was enjoying it, socialism could wait a couple of minutes. Unless someone approached, then he would talk to them.

Winnie had been enjoying the sunny May weather while trying to find new flowers to press inside her books. She used them when conducting letters to add a bit of whimsy and a sweet scent. So had collected a few beautiful white clovers, some bright yellow dandelions, and some Queen Anne's Lace. She hummed a soft song as she placed the flowers carefully into the pockets of her leather sachet and started to head out further into the grounds to look for more.
That was when she saw a boy who seemed around her age laying back on the grass. He looked peaceful watching the sky, and Winnie's own eyes flickered up to try and see what he was staring at. She could hear the soft melody the birds were singing, but couldn't see any of the creatures. Perhaps the boy was hurt? She frowned and slowly approached him, her eyes scanning his body before taking a seat next to him, her green linen dress was already full of grass stains, so she wasn't particularly worried. "Excuse me." She said with a soft Irish accent. "I saw you laying here and I was worried you were hurt, or perhaps you can see something I can't, and I was curious to know the reason." She explained with a sheepish smile, pulling her bag off of her body and setting it next to them.

William took in a deep breath before he heard the grass move to his side. He turned his head a little and saw a girl sitting beside him. At first he saw her hair, then her face, then the green dress she was wearing. He inspects her for a moment. She seemed genuine in what she was saying. It wasn't normal that people would just stop to check on their fellow students. The last time William did so himself, didn't fully end well. Although hopefully this interaction would be different.
He smiled up at the girl and said, "The latter." He pointed up at the sky, hoping she'd catch sight of the birds, "I was enjoying the view of them flying and the weather. Sorry, I didn't mean to cause you to think I was hurt." He sat up and pushed his hair out of his face, "I'm William." he offered her his hand. He didn't know if she was accustomed to that sort of a greeting, but its what he knew best so it was worth a try. "By the way..I uh, love your dress." His father had taught him that complimenting people was a good way to break the ice and make a good impression. Although evidently, he still wasn't the best at it.

There was no way that Winnie would not ask someone if they were okay if she found them laying on the ground! It was simply the polite thing to do. First years also had to look out for each other, after all. She recognized the boy from a few of their classes, but they had never spoken before.
"Oh?" Winnie blinked, still a bit worried he was hurt until he pointed towards the sky. She looked upwards and squinted. When her eyes adjusted to the bright light, she noticed a bird soaring through the air before landing among the tree tops. "Oh!" She repeated, suddenly understanding. "I'm guessing you're a fan of animals too?" She asked with a smile. "No worries, if I had seen them sooner I might have done the same. Wild life is so interesting, don't you think?" No matter if they were magical creatures or ones she had seen in woods.
Winnie accepted his hand and shook it. "Hi William, I'm Winnie. I'm in Ravenclaw." She commented, since she wasn't wearing her robes. "Hm?" She looked down at her grass stained dress and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. "... You do?" She tilted her head, his lips twitching into an amused smile. "You have interesting taste, but thank you."

William squinted a little as he suddenly started to recognize the girl, but he couldn't exactly pin the class they shared together. He smiled as she suddenly got excited as she saw the birds. He enjoyed watching people enjoy things, especially when they smile about it. Like his mother always said, 'A smile is the purest form of emotion.' He returned her smile and said, "Yeah, kinda a fan. More of an admirer I would have to say. But yes, they are very interesting indeed. What do you find so interesting about them?"
He was glad when she returned his hand shake, that gave him the confidence he needed to keep going. "Ravenclaw huh? I'm a Gryffindor, if my wonderful attire didn't give it off," he replied in a slight bit of sarcasm. He never liked uniforms much, but maybe there wasn't such a requirement for them here in Hogwarts since she was wearing that dress. His face went red in embarrassment as she answered what he said about her dress. He cursed himself for saying something as stupid as he did. After taking a few seconds to gather himself he responded, "I'm..sorry. I didn't mean to say something that bothered you like that. I thought..I don't know what I thought." He looked back up at the sky as another breeze went over them. He knew he wasn't really helping the situation, but he also didn't know what else to do, and it showed.

Winnie wasn't certain either, there were quite a few first years. She had tried to write everyone's name down but it was sometimes difficult to put a name to a face. "Hm. I guess I enjoy watching the birds... Who doesn't, I suppose? But I envy them for being able to fly and live in the treetops. Their view of the world is so vastly different than ours, isn't it? It would be interesting to know what it's like. Then again, I think that about a lot of animals. The foxes, the deer, the bears... They're just so interesting."
"Yes, I figured as much, unless you go around stealing other people's uniforms." She chuckled, her eyes down to his uniform. She didn't mind the uniforms, but during this time of year she liked to change out of them after class. It was too hot dressed in mostly black robes. She figured if she wasn't in class, why bother? No one had told her otherwise. Had William been living in his uniform the entire year? The poor lad. "It didn't bother me. I just thought it was a curious thing to say." She corrected, drawing her legs up so she could lean forward and rest her arms on them. "Usually people don't compliment me when I wear a stained dress, you see, but I always thought that stains can add character to clothing. It tells a story of sorts. Today, my dress is saying that I went picking flowers. Your clothing will say that you laid down in the grass. Interesting, isn't it?"

William continued to stare up at the sky as he listened to her, answering with, "Yeah..I guess you could say that. I kinda look at it the same way. I mean, if you think about the birds, they just get to fly up there, only coming down to rest and maybe get some food. Unlike us they just..live. There's only so much that can stop them. I don't really think that extends to other creatures, but maybe that's a good thing. Would definitely make learning about them fun I'd say."
He laughed a little, "Nope. This is definitely mine." He had been wearing his uniform the entire year, only changing out of it to sleep. He always thought it was custom to wear it, but what if it wasn't? After seeing Winnie not wearing one, he told himself to look out more to see if that was normal for people to not be wearing these uniforms out of class. He turned back to her as he went back to listening to her attentively. He answered her with, "Well, I never really thought about it that way. I mean, it doesn't bother me, and you're right it does add character. I don't really care about stains unless I gotta be somewhere formal, then it'd probably be best to be clean, but out here after class and such, it doesn't really matter. I guess..it could be, interesting, as you say. I guess I've never looked at stains as story tellers, but you're not wrong."

Winnie nodded as she listened to William, "That's true, they spend most of their life in the sky. I wonder if they ever get lonely? I know bugs and bats can fly too, but still... They really control the sky, very interesting." She sighed happily, watching the birds flutter around above them. "We don't have wings, but I suppose we're lucky to have broomsticks. Muggles need to ride in airplanes or balloons. It must be sad not to be able to ride a broom." Her mother could never ride, and her father had basically banned them. "Still though, it's not the same thing... Unless I build a treehouse up high." She chuckled.
The poor boy, had no one told him? It wasn't that uncommon to see students wearing their uniforms even outside of class, but still... It was always nice to change into something more comfortable, or something she was used to at least. "Did you attend the ball? It was... Interesting for sure, but anyways, that is probably one of the only places I wouldn't wear a stained dress. I do have unstained clothing, of course, but if I'm rolling around in the grass why bother?" She chuckled. "Do you go out of your way every day to look up at the sky?" She asked, tilting her head.

William watched her as she spoke, listening very closely to everything she said. For some reason he really enjoyed socializing, which isn't something that could be claimed for every other time he tried. "Yeah..I guess they do control the skies in a way," he answered. "Maybe it is lonely up there for some, but most birds are flock animals. Which means they always have friends to fly with, and I think that helps with it being lonely." He listened to her next part and his faced developed a confused look. "Broomsticks?" He asked. "Since when could those fly?" He had never heard of a flying broomstick or even Quittich; as if anyone needed more proof how anti-social he was.
He shook his head before laughing as he listened to her. "No. I didn't even know there was a ball, but yeah my dad would have been furious if I would have worn anything stained to an event like that." He looks back out towards the forest as she asks her question, but he returns his gaze to her and said, "Not specifically the sky, and not even every day, but yes I do go out of my way to spend some time out here. I believe it helps with stress and you know, clearing your head. Honestly I just think its important to enjoy the weather when its nice enough to be in. I don't know..." His awkwardness set in for a moment but he did his best to get over it. "I don't know its hard to explain. It's just..nice I guess Maybe I'm just a little weird but being out here helps me."
