Rescue Mission

Recently the often dreary Scottish weather had been taking a sunny turn, and much of the student body had migrated outdoors to soak in golden warm rays. Cosmo was among the happy children scattered about the lawn. Most were in groups, laughing and shoving each other around. It was just after lunch time, and many people had brought down spare plates of sandwiches or fruit so there was an added layer of merriment to the air. Cosmo loved the atmosphere, and almost wished she could join in, but sitting with people she didn't know and struggling to include herself in already formed friendship groups seemed a little too painful right now. Instead she wandered a little ways away from everyone else and sat below a tree.
The grass beneath her was a lush velvety green, and the leaves above her spread dappled light across her body and the surrounding ground. Cosmo was just contemplating taking out her knitting from her knapsack when a small rustle sounded above her, and she looked up just in time to see a birds nest tumbling down towards her. A jab of fear shot through her body, and reacting completely on instinct she shot out her hand, only just catching the small round ball of sticks before it hit the ground. She cupped it gingerly in her hands, which were shaking uncontrollably. The nest itself was built from fluffy grey feathers, and odd bits of string all stuffed between intricately woven sticks. Inside were nestled three perfect blue eggs with brown specks across the surface, and Cosmo let out a small coo of excitement when she saw them.
It took her about three minutes looking in awe at the three little lives in front of her before she started to freak out. What if they got too shaken up in the fall? Would they be okay? How could she get them back to where they sat by herself? As the questions raced through her brain her breathing sped a little, and she looked around incase she found any sudden inspiration on what could help her. Her eyes landed on a tall girl with red hair not far away, and Cosmo hurriedly waved to get her attention, hoping to get help and make a friend in the process.
"Hey! Come look at this!"

Winnie was enjoying the warm June sunshine. After the events at the ball, she needed some time to relax. She sighed softly as she listened to the birds tweeting their happy songs, and watched as the fluffy white clouds danced slowly across the sky. The sunshine felt good on her skin, and she could feel her eyes getting heavy. Perhaps she could take a quick nap... Surely no one would care, right? She just needed to find the perfect spot to take a snooze.
She walked towards the trees, enjoying the rustle of the new spring leaves. Nature really came to life during this time of year, and it was always so exciting to see. She silently wondered if she would see any wildlife today. Spring time was always so much fun because it meant new growth and adorable baby animals. The little fawns were simply the cutest, and she was disappointed she had missed a few sightings this year already. According to her mum's letters, that was. At least she had sent some photographs along with her letter. They were muggle pictures, of course, so they didn't move like the paintings around the castle, but still enchanting nonetheless.
She was just about to settle underneath a tree when she heard a voice calling out. Her eyes automatically scanned the area until they fell upon a short little brunette who was waving a hand in... her direction? Goodness. She blinked in surprise before pointing to herself and walking over to the girl. She was terribly adorable, shorter than Winnie, with long dark brown locks, brown eyes, and a cute peppering of freckles over her face. Was this girl a first year student or an adorable fairy of sorts? The Ravenclaw was so caught up in her appearance that it took a moment for her to notice the nest. She gasped audibly. "Oh! What happened?" She asked, her brow furrowing. This wasn't her first baby bird rescue mission, but it was the first time an entire nest had fallen down with the babies safely inside. How did that happen? She assumed from the girl's panic that she hadn't plucked it out of the tree herself, "Did you catch it? That's impressive."

Thankfully the girl came over, and even just knowing that another human was there soothed Cosmo slightly. Her fingers stopped trembling and she managed to think a little more clearly, finally assessing the situation properly. There wasn't any rush, and the eggs would probably be safest if any decisions were properly thought out, so Cosmo gently set them aside against the tree trunk where they nestled comfortably, and turned back to face her helper.
She had her gorgeous hair tied into two cute plaits, and her sparkling blue eyes were looking down at the nest with a small furrow placed between her thin brows. Cosmo found herself immediately enchanted by her delicate features, but quickly reminded herself to stay focused. The girl was probably the perfect candidate for the job, her very pale skin was splashed with a smattering of freckles, indicating time spent outdoors, and anyone who liked to be outside liked animals right? Cosmo mentally shook herself. Of course that's not how it worked. For now she would just have to cross her fingers and hope for the best.
"I did catch it, but to be honest I don't even know why it was falling! There's barely any wind, its such a lovely day and-" Cosmo cut herself off, and took a small breath, reminding herself that the eggs weren't in danger anymore. Normally she was very calm and collected, but something about animals in danger really made her panic. She finished collecting herself and smiled up apologetically.
"I'm sorry, I don't normally get this worried. Thank you for coming over by the way! My name's Cosmo," at this point it felt odd to be sitting and craning her neck, so Cosmo jumped up and brushed her robe off before sticking out her hand for the other girl to shake. "D'you wanna help me put the nest back in the tree?" she asked, a hopeful note to her tone.

If Winnie had known that her new companion thought so highly of her, she would have blushed so red that she could have been mistaken for a tomato. That thought process was often very sound, and it was evident to Winnie that the brunette also enjoyed spending time outside. She felt like she had seen the girl before, but she surely would have remembered her. She did not seem like she could be older than a first year, so perhaps they had seen each other during the sorting ceremony. She felt an almost instant kinship with the girl; they were now on this mission together, after all. A few tiny lives were depending on them.
At the girl's explanation, Winnie glanced upwards into the tree to see if she could spot any problems. She frowned when she saw that a branch had started to crack. "It seems like the damage was down a while ago and we're just seeing the repercussions now. It's a good thing you were sitting under this tree!" It did not seem like the eggs were harmed in any way, although Winnie kept herself from handling them directly. Scent was important to most animals, and she didn't want to disturb the nest more than it had already been disturbed.
"Oh! Nice to meet you, I'm Winnie." She responded, reaching forward to shake the girl's hand. At the sight of the other girl's panic, Winnie tried to offer her a reassuring smile. "It's okay. You're worried about them. I think it's sweet, not everyone cares about nature... It's very sad. Also, of course I'll help you! I also happen to love nature." She exclaimed before looking back at up the tree. "Luckily for you, I happen to be a great tree climber." She informed her with a soft chuckle. "So I think I can climb up, but there's the issue of getting the nest up there with me... You wouldn't happen to know the levitation charm yet, would you?"

Cosmo followed Winnie's gaze up into the boughs of the tree and as soon as it was pointed out she also spotted the cracked branch. She was glad not to have somehow inadvertently been the cause of the nest falling. Not that there was any reason she could think of, but it was still good to know. Cosmo smiled broadly when Winnie introduced herself.
"Oh, that's a brilliant name! I don't know if you've read any muggle books, but theres a story about a little yellow bear called Winnie the Pooh," Cosmo felt a little silly mentioning it, as she thought about how ridiculous it might sound to someone who grew up without muggle stories. Winnie seemed sweet though, and probably wouldn't mind.
"You're absolutely right!" Cosmo exclaimed, glad to hear someone sharing her views. "More people should care about nature," she paused and smiled sweetly, "I'm very glad to hear that you do though, and thank you for helping." She seemed delighted to hear that Winnie was a good tree climber, and already her mind started planning how to suggest building a treehouse together, but once again Cosmo reared her thoughts back on track.
"I wish I could say that I was good at the levitation charm but for some reason I can never get it to work... I think it's probably too risky to try it on these little fellas," Cosmo glanced back at the birds nest just to reassure herself that it was still safe, and to give herself a second to think.
"Maybe if I found something to climb on like a stump, and rolled it here? Then I could stand on that and pass the nest to you once you were up," Cosmo suggested hopefully, turning back to look at Winnie. It would have to be something sturdy, and they might not find anything close enough to the tree but Cosmo thought it seemed like a solid plan if luck happened to be on their side.

"My name?" Winnie asked in response, her blue eyes blinking over at the small girl. "I have heard of Winnie the Pooh, actually. It was my mum's favourite book growing up. She denies that she named me after it... I don't believe her." She chuckled. "My mum is a muggle." She quickly added on for context. "Anyways, I think your name is super cute. You're named after the universe! That's super cool."
It seemed like the two girls had a lot in common. "It's always a pleasure to meet someone who cares about nature." She said with a playful wink. She would definitely be up for building a treehouse with her cute new friend. "That's a good point... Even if you were a master at it, I would be worried." She frowned and glanced down at the eggs. What else could they do?
Of course Cosmo offered a suggestion, she seemed like the helpful type, she was taking time out of her day to save eggs, after all! "That's true, but I'm a bit worried about passing up the nest without protection." She paused to think, about what she had on hand. "Hmm... I do have my backpack." She pointed to her shoulder bag, which was currently stuffed with books and flowers, as well as her cardigan. What good would those be to the egg? Cushioning, perhaps? "We could take the items out of it and use my sweater to cradle the nest. When you find the log you could pass it up to me? The nest would be a bit more sage that way." She suggested.

"Oh my god, I love that so much!!! Winnie the Pooh is soooo cute! I guess it fits you," Cosmo grinned, she was glad to be learning about Winnie and her family. It seemed like today was going to be the first in a friendship full of fun and adventure.
"My mum's a muggle too, and I grew up without magic. My dad was the wizard. He gave me my name," she blushed a light pink from Winnie's compliment, "thank you for saying it's cute!" If she was being honest, Cosmo's name was one of her favourite things about herself, and whenever anyone else complimented it she got happy little bubbles in her chest.
"Using your sweater is very clever," Cosmo frowned slightly and looked up to where the nest fell from, "as long as you're sure you'll be able to unwrap it in the tree safely, I don't want you to get hurt." She was used to being more reckless on her own, but now that Winnie was involved she found herself being much more conscientious of danger.
"Maybe you should wrap the eggs up while I search for the log," she suggested, bending down to softly take the nest and hand it to Winnie before walking away to search. The long grass felt nice on her shins and the sun beat down warming her back and shoulders. She passed by a few small stumps, some of which were attached to the ground and others were too rotten when she inspected them. Just as she was beginning to lose hope she came across the perfect log. It was tall and wide, and most importantly stable. It was a struggle rolling it back to the tree, and when she arrived she was panting, her long hair tangled and sticking slightly to her damp forehead.
"I got one!" She exclaimed, wiping her face with her sleeve and looking to see how Winnie had fared.

Winnie couldn't help but blush deeply at that comment. Her? Cute? Did Cosmo not realize how completely adorable she herself was? "Oh, that's the same as me, then. ... My dad was around but..." He really didn't do much parenting other than tell her to forget about magic and order her to do chores, but hey... At least he was around. "Did your mother know about magic or was she surprised to find out that you're a witch?" She was curious about the Gryffindor now. They had a kinship of kinds already, after all. "My mum found out from my dad. She was shocked but she really loves the magic world... I wish she were the magical one instead of him." She definitely deserved it more.
"Don't worry about me; I've been climbing trees my entire life!" Winnie remarked with a playful grin and a quick wink. "I grew up on a farm, and we have some apple trees. I used to climb them to shake off all the good apples during harvest." She nodded at that suggest and reached down to start unpacking her bag. She carefully laid all her items at the base of the tree. Then, she pulled her cardigan out and laid it flat on the ground. She carefully picked up the nest and set it in the center of the sweater, slowly wrapping the little nest up so it was nice and snug inside of it. She placed it inside her bag, pausing before she turned to add the flowers for some extra padding.
"It's perfect!" Winnie responded upon seeing the log that Cosmo had discovered. She had set the bag down with the eggs and was now beginning to scale the tree. Luckily it had quite a few branches, so Winnie was able to find her footing rather easily. She only stumbled a bit when she reached the cracked branch, frowning for a moment. "Maybe we should pick another branch? It would be senseless to put them back if they're just going to fall again..."

Cosmo felt a small, smug smile begin to form when Winnie blushed. It wasn't often that she got the chance to compliment people, so it was nice. Then Winnie mentioned her dad before trailing off, and Cosmo felt a strong protective urge for her new friend. She wanted to offer a hug, or to say that Winnie could talk to her about it anytime she wanted, but decided that would probably come later. They had only just met, she reminded herself. Setting that aside, she answered Winnie's question.
"Mum always knew it was a possibility, Dad told her he was magic, and she learnt a bit from him about the Wizarding world before- well yeah," Cosmo looked away, her usual smile gone for a moment. "Mum was always a bit scared that I would be magic cos Dad had a dangerous job, and that made all of magic seem dangerous to her. Once I got the letter she was really happy, though," Cosmo took a second to let the floods of memories pass through her mind, before looking back over to Winnie, smile in place again.
"That's a nice thing to wish for your mum, I guess because she isn't magic at least you can share it with her. When we're of age you can show her your favourite spells and give her a piece of the wonder," she knew it wasn't quite the same as having magic inside you, but she hoped Winnie would still like the idea. A moment passed where Cosmo realised the conversation had taken a somber path, but then Winnies grin and wink sent bubbles of excitement tumbling through Cosmo anew. She started shuffling the log slowly into place, calling up to Winnie as she climbed.
"It's so cool you grew up on an apple orchard! I live in the country too, but I haven't met anyone else who does yet! Which town is your farm close to?" Cosmo asked, wondering if they might be able to visit one another during holidays. Once the log was right by the base of the tree, she looked up to watch Winnie climb the last few branches, admiring how well she climbed. Then Cosmo picked up the backpack and checked it over for any holes the eggs might slip from, before carefully clambering on the log to hand it up.
"I really like the flowers you have in there, Winnie! They're so cute," Cosmo grinned, and stood on her tiptoes with the bag held high above her head, "and I think you're right, you should definitely choose a different branch to sit them on, are there any there?"

Winnie tried to offer her new friend a small smile. "Well, at least he shared that with her... And help create you, of course. I'm glad that she knows how much of a gift magic is for someone. My father hates magic and tried to suppress mine, but it didn't work out in the end. I'm happy that both of us are witched, because it means that we got the opportunity to meet." She was happy she got to meet such a nice girl who cared this much about animals. Any friend of animals was a friend of Winnie's!
"Cosmo... That's a very good point!" Why hadn't she thought of that before? Perhaps she could even use her magic to make the chores around the house a bit easier on her and her mother. If she was able to learn some household magic, that was. There just had to be some sort of magical farm spells, maybe to help feed the animals.
"Well, it wasn't quite an orchid; we grow all sorts of things on the farm, flowers, veggies, and fruit. Plus, we have the cutest animals. We're an hour or so outside of Dublin, actually. My grandparents live in Dublin, they own a bookstore." She explained with a smile as she steadied herself on a new tree branch. It was just above the old branch, and seemed sturdy enough to hold the nest in place. "Thank you! I was picking them to send home to my mum, but I think she'll understand the circumstances." She chuckled, reaching down to grasp the bag's arm strap in her hands. "This branch looks good." She responded, her eyes flickering up to the branch just above her. "There's a little crook here that they should fit nicely inside." When she secured the bag, she placed it in her lap and carefully opened it. She pulled back her cardigan and scooped up the nest, gently placing it onto the branch. She moved it gently until it seemed to be perfectly in place. "... I think this should be good!"
