This book has been designed to accompany the Runes Curriculum as reference and will serve as a rune dictionary for Elder Futhark and the numerical runes of the wizarding world.

Original version of this dictionary penned by Béatrice Lydursdattir. Various sources went into its creation, all of which will be listed at the end of posts.

Though Uruz energy is also heavily invested in the hamingja, it is not suited for easy, conscious control as Fehu is. It is the rune of powerful unconscious shaping energies that need to be guided wisely as they manifest.

Bandruna:
It’s not uncommon for the rune meaning of Thurisaz to be described as a thorn that is most sharp, a grim and evil thing to take grip on or touch. However, it is representative of Thor and his hammer protecting Asgard from the thurses, giants who resist the expansion of consciousness throughout the multiverse. In every respect, the energies of Thurisaz are a forceful enemy of unconsciousness, ignorance and the rule of brute violence. Thurisaz represents the warrior that combines consciousness and wisdom with matters requiring force.

Bandruna:
Ansuz is specifically the rune of intellectual learning, understanding, abstract thought process and the ability to communicate these in concrete terms. As well as language skills, the ability to write and speak in words as well as the language of symbols. Ansuz is one of the runes of leadership connected with spiritual leaders, teachers or Elders, the older, wiser people from whom advice is sought. The chanting of Ansuz or meditation on Ansuz can open channels of inspiration previously inaccessible.

It wards off woe and sorrow so that the abundant gifts of the multiverse have no trouble bestowing themselves upon you. In Wunjo we find harmonious energies characteristic in functional families, group affiliations, healthy societies and nations and ultimately, the world.

Bandruna:
As the ninth rune, Hagalaz has a special place in the ordering, as nine has particular significance in the Elder Futhark. Nine signals completion of a perfect pattern. Nine months is one of nature’s most regular human cycles, that of the gestation period for a baby in a mother’s womb. In this sense it is a protective rune and assists us in acceptance of the unalterable, the seeking of shelter and patience while things blow over.

Naudhiz is still a rune of fire, but is very different from the other two main igneous runes, Kenaz and Sowilo. In fact, while the first is the light, the fire extinguished which advances, and Sowilo is the natural fire, often devastating, Naudhiz is the fire that makes survival that prevents falling.

Isa cannot be reversed but can lie in opposition, showing that all of Isa’s attributes are magnified. When this occurs, it is a message to the seeker to watch their own actions carefully and modify them if required. It is also a warning to observe others’ actions and to keep a look out for traps and pitfalls. Read, then re-read the ‘fine print’.

Bandruna:
Rune of concentration of things in a static or frozen state. Rune of stillness and the Ego-Self. Consideration must be taken of all runes and their messages when Isa is alongside them as their wisdom wants to be acknowledged and their messages heeded. The Isa rune intensifies the meaning of any other rune it is associated with.

Bandruna:
Jera can magically speed things up or slow things down, and manipulation of subjective time in this manner is governed by this rune. In this rune we see the most stark western counter-point to the maxim ‘time is an illusion’. If a person sows no seeds, does no work, plants no goals and desire in his or her thoughts, Jera will bring about situations which reflect that lack. The ultimate consequences of past human action unfold into the future.

The Eihwaz rune is one of wisdom and can be used to evoke the mysteries of Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil’s symbology and meanings are vast and complex. The Eihwaz rune provides protection to the seeker and can help increase personal power and defense. It also suggests communication between different worlds, different layers of reality and different realms.

Bandruna:
Berkana represents the path of the mother, the healer and the midwife, bringing new life after death, just as the Birch puts out the first leaves after winter. The Birch tree is abundant and all providing and heals through nourishment, cleansing and loving. It was often planted before a house was built, to protect the home and its occupants in Nordic countries. It is a rune which leads to blossoming and ripening and is concerned with life, death, rebirth and renewal.
