You don't need discord for any moderated events. However, it is easier to be on discord if you are in the Quidditch or Duelling teams as you can directly talk to your team through there.
You do, however, need to be "registered" on the Official Index (in the encyclopedia area) in order to take part in any moderated events, as you require official stats or spells or abilities.
