2020, Stage 1 Group D: Ravenclaw vs Slytherin

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Phaedra would be lying if she said that she hadn’t anticipated using that spell on someone. Grown weary of elementary jinxes like Flipendo, the fourth-year yearned to show off the expanding collection of big girl spells under her belt, and what a spell that one was. After an hour poured into the duelling rules beforehand, she discovered she couldn’t attack a paralyzed opponent, but at the very least, the thought of flashing them a victorious leer as they lay helpless brought on all sorts of glee to the competitive spirit. Satisfying, but perhaps nothing more than an egotistical fantasy after all; Bridget swiftly dodged her attack anyway. It was an impressive feat, Phaedra had to admit, for someone who just experienced the surprise of having their spell backfire on them.

She didn’t have much time to snicker though. Right off the bat, they were double-teaming her. It was unfortunate for her and her teammate, but admittedly a sensical and efficient tactic of taking half a team down quickly. Aiming for them both was tempting, but could very well put her in greater jeopardy. She’d decided to play it safe for now. Not moving an inch from where she stood, Phaedra immediately drew back her arm again to continue the fight, eyes following in the direction of her teammate. As off as Lana made her feel, they were off to an acceptable start it seemed.

Finally a hit managed to land on one of the players. This should be a lesson to any older student watching from the sidelines that even if your opponent is younger than you, they can still cause you harm. Artemis didn't doubt that a smart prefect like @Phaedra Stavrou would have thought so lowly about her younger opponents. He knew that she was a bit more logical than most other older students. But was quite unfortunate that she wasn't able to dodge that huge gust of wind that strongly blew out of @Santario Martin's wand. Wind so strong it would feel as if the fourth year couldn't breathe while she was fighting against the wind gust that was blowing at her. Even though she was fighting to see through the strong wind blowing at her, it wouldn't stop the older girl from shooting spells at her opponents if she chose to do so. Evasion might be out of the question though...one would have to get lucky enough to be able to evade the next attack properly.

@Santario Martin was quite the agile player if Artemis could say so himself. @Lana Monet must not have that same luck as she completely missed the younger girl, spun around somehow, and managed to send her spell in the direction of her teammate! A duck on the ground had Phaedra dodging the knockback spell while the youngest player rolled on the platform floor helped her avoid the strong gust of wind aimed her way by the eldest player. Artemis knew that there was serious potential in that young Slytherin, but he wouldn't place his eggs directly in her carton just yet. There was still time for this duel to be turned around. So long as no one accidentally aimed at their partners again.

@Bridget Collins prepared herself to dodge any attack that would happen to come her way, but she was lucky enough that no one spared her a second thought this round and managed to just stand there mute and looking pretty. She would be able to speak soon though...that was for sure.

If there was one thing Bridget hated, it was feeling useless, and having to sit around waiting for her tongue to untie in the middle of a duel, thus being unable to cast spells and help her teammate, definitely made her feel pretty useless. She was alert and ready to dodge any spells that came her way--if she wasn't going to be able to help, the least she could do was not hurt their chances of victory even further--but neither of the Ravenclaws took aim at her. Instead, they both targeted Santario. While it would be all too easy to simply watch how her partner did, she was not about to let herself be that useless.

As such, while Bridget wasn't sure if it actually helped, she strained her tongue muscles against the effects of her spell. For her sake, she hoped she'd cast a rather weak Mimblewimble. And maybe she had, or maybe her physical battle against the magic actually did something, because her tongue unknotted itself.

She immediately brought her wand back up, ready to cast. Santario had done a marvelous job of dodging both spells. Or, one spell, really. Lana's had gone so terribly off course she'd been closer to hitting Phaedra than one of the Slytherins. She briefly considered sending some snarky comment at the unsettling girl, but pushed the thought aside; she was here to win, not stoop down to the other girl's level of childish snickering at a backfired spell.

Santario, while younger, was undeniably a worthy competitor and Bridget was glad to have her by her side. Not only had she dodged Phaedra's spell, but she'd managed to land the first hit of the game, a Wind Jinx that buffeted against the older Ravenclaw. There was a reason they were partners, though, and Bridget wasn't about to let Santario lead them to victory alone. It was time to redeem her backfired spell.

Again.. She had missed again, this time much worst than the last. It was involuntary, the way she'd spun around like that. It would be a lie to have said she wasn't embarrassed, though she refused to act on it. Instead, she shrugged it off and managed to keep her head high. It was foolish of her to act so confidently, however high her ego may be. Personal feelings and emotion should not get in the way of one's duel, perhaps that last spell backfire being a way of teaching her such lesson.

She glanced back at Phaedra, a quick apology escaping her lips. Though before she could finish her own sentence, her teammate was hit by a gust of wind. Lana whipped her head around quickly, seeing that it was Santario who was responsible. Was she bitter than none of her spells seemed to work on her? Perhaps, though she swallowed such annoyance and instead focused on the task at hand. She was unable to say for sure if her next spell would work, though the only thing she could do was hope. Hope for what exactly? At least somewhat of a victory, however small it may be.

She shook her head at her own desperance, knowing they were still in the early phases of the duel. She had to give it time.. Patience seemed to be the key to a game like this.

Phaedra frowned as her own Ventus only barely grazed Santario. She wasn't one to put much consideration into luck; if she was missing to this degree it was no one's fault but her own. The thought that she was seriously lacking in her aim was a tough pill for her to swallow. Certainly, her priorities during practice were all wrong. Fancy spell-work didn't mean much when you couldn't hit anything.

Before she could avoid it, a spiraling burst of wind erupted from Santario's wand and collided with her upper body and face, nearly knocking her legs out from under her. Thankful for the rubber soles on her shoes, Phaedra put a hand in front of her face in an attempt to shield herself from a potential onslaught of debris, using her lower strength as leverage to stay afoot as the wind came dangerously close to inching her backwards and off the podium. Her robes danced around her ankles and portions of her hair came undone from its ponytail, leaving the usually refined girl appearing as if she had had a tussle with a wild animal.

When the effects of Santario's spell subsided, she took in a much needed breath and spared a mere second to tuck wavy locks behind her ear. It wouldn't do having her vision obstructed any more than necessary and who knew what spells the Viridian Vipers would throw at her next. Phaedra prepared to speak another incantation, until in her peripherals, she noticed an unaccounted for blue flash headed right towards her.

There was a yelp, or rather a squeak, that would make her cheeks later flush with shame. Closing her eyes in anticipation of a hit that never came, Phaedra opened them again to find herself ducked to the ground. Her gaze trailed in the direction from where the sudden spell came, and then she paled at the realization that there was only one person it could have come from; her teammate, Lana. How did that happen? No matter—there was no time to ponder it. In an impressive display of restraint, Phaedra bit her tongue to keep herself from saying anything uncouth, her fist curling along her wand. That girl was still giving her the heebie-jeebies, but her carelessness could not go without a scolding. Phaedra didn't have a shiny badge for nothing. "Hey. Watch it."

She backed down after the apology, not finding it worthwhile to keep a grudge now of all places, and turned back to their opponents, corners of her mouth curled in newfound concentration. Taking a stance, she swiftly raised her wand above her head, ready to get back into the game after that little setback. The third time's the charm, right?

Well this was an interesting turn of events. Still disoriented from the wind jinx, @Phaedra Stavrou wasn't able to avoid the very jarring Tickling Charm that was sent her way by @Santario Martin. The seemingly stoic girl was now trying to control her laughter as she held onto her sides to stop that funny sensation that often came when someone poked at a very sensitive spot. Hopefully, she wouldn't laugh herself into an accident as Artemis was not going to be happy to clean that up. However, her giggling fit didn't stop her from taking a moment to cast a spell of her own, at not just @Santario Martin but at the girl's partner @Bridget Collins as well! A two for one hit! Amazing!

Unfortunately, @Bridget Collins didn't manage to get her spell to connect with her target, the spell missing completely and it was most likely due to the other Ravenclaw's presence. @Lana Monet has been throwing off this strange aura that was throwing everyone in this duel off in one way or another...even herself it seems. Lana, yet again, missed her initial target when casting her spell, but at least this time it was aimed at another opponent and not at her own teammate. Sad to say, the spell still missed to land a hit. You could tell the Ravenclaw was getting frustrated with herself, but hopefully, that didn't put a damper on her to continue to try. The Veridian Vipers, pleased to land another hit on their opponent, didn't realize that they had lost their own magical weapons and were now scrambling to find the pieces of wood along the dueling platform.

Would they be able to find their wands in time before the next attacks landed on them?

Her tongue no longer tied, Bridget was ready to prove the skill that had gotten her onto the duelling team. While spells like Obscuro and Mimblewimble were undeniably useful and admittedly some of her favorites, sometimes you had to go with flat-out damage, and if there was any spell that packed a punch, it was Flipendo. That was why she opted for the Knockback Jinx; the whole point of duelling was to knock your opponent unconscious and you couldn't exactly due that by tying their tongue.

But something was still off. Her wand was lined up at the fourth year, but even as she muttered the incantation, her focus wasn't quite all there. She couldn't help but let her eyes wander a bit, darting towards the younger of her opponents. There was something frankly wrong about Lana Monet and while she knew she needed to be concentrating on casting her spell, she couldn't help but double-check to make sure the Ravenclaw wasn't about to attack her outside of proper duelling guidelines or something. The notion was probably completely untrue, but nonetheless, it was taking a toll on her casting. At least this one didn't backfire or almost hit her teammate like Lana's had, though the wide margin she'd missed Phaedra by wasn't great either.

And then there were two wands pointed at her. She saw the one coming from Lana first, probably because she couldn't help but keep an eye on the girl, but didn't even have to try to maneuver out of the way because the blinding green light somehow veered towards Santario, not that her teammate had too much difficulty avoiding it. Perhaps it was Phaedra she should've been paying more attention to, though, because she didn't have nearly enough time to avoid her spell, and despite her best attempt at maintaining hold of the strip of laurel wood, her wand flew out of her hand.

Well, that wasn't great. A glance at her teammate showed that Santario too had been disarmed. Not only were they up against an older student, but they were facing an older student who could direct her spells at two people at once. Still, they weren't really losing yet. Phaedra had been hit by both Santario's Ventus and her Tickling Charm, so that would probably prove a useful distraction as they retrieved their wands.

Speaking of which, Bridget really needed to find her wand, and fast. Every moment spent looking for it meant time for the Ravenclaws to hit her with a spell. She couldn't help but feel a little frustrated--first she was tongue-tied and now she was wandless--but she couldn't let that mess up her performance. The duel wasn't over yet.
