I know a few characters with traumatic backstories that have beautifully created characters, so it's not bad in every case. That being said I agree with Lizzie that happy backstories and childhoods for characters are very nice and I enjoy seeing them.

I'd like to apologise if I offended anyone too! I was simply stating my thoughts on creating an orphan character, and although I agree that there are well-made characters with traumatic backstories, I also really wanna see more happy kids running around Hogwarts lol

Ha ha Jays birthmum died when they were born, and they were born on a rainy day on the side of a street in Japan so if that isnt edgy idk what is lol. Jay thinks both of her biological parents are dead and abandoned them when they were born so they're just a mOoDy eMo tEeNagEr at this point, but ta-da! Their biological father is still alive working on some underground stuff in Japan. I havent figured out too much about that stuff yet, i mean... Sir Victoria (their current guardian who basically kidnapped them from an orphanage because another wiz wanted to kidnap them too, turns out the other dude was sent by their biological dad so ha ha how the turntables) is just g o n e, I myself, have no idea where hes going, though, i do know hes just travelling to many places in secret because he doesnt want anyone to follow him and well... do bad things to him lol. Jay is still very sad about him being gone, man, i cant wait for them to find out theyre not a emo orphan anymore.
I hope its okay to spoil things about my own characters story
Because of the fact that Jay thinks they got 'abandoned' has made them a more independent and cold person, a part of Jays personality is just basically them being salty for not having parents lol

Oh and in Japan orphanages are pretty bad, it could be the building and staff thats bad or the orphans being really really violent. Orphanages are also kinda looked down upon in Japan. So like, Jay has some experience with living in terrible conditions. I am really glad i had/have a father that cared for me or else i would of prolly ended up in an orphanage. From experience as a little kid Japan was terrible when it came to child services, i remember walking around with my nannies or by myself when i was between 3-5 i could see other kids running around during school hours because their parents simply didnt care. Heck, at that time mothers had full custody of their children and the gov was lenient towards mothers so my father had to fight for my custody even though she was a terrible person, it was only when i was 5 when my father finally got full custody for me 
Even when i was born the hospital didnt want to give my father the papers cos he was a foreigner so he literally took a random japanese dude outside of the hospital and asked him to get the papers and without question the hospital staff did. Lifes craaaaaazy amirite?

Ooo thats pretty well thought through @Jane Victoria, I'm pretty sure it's fine to release information if it's your own character but it's different for other people

As for traumatic backstories, currently, my character's parents are all alive and well, I have some plans to kill them off but it would be for character development (having to run the family business young) but I am completely debating it.

Lucia you can still make your iNPC a broom racer, but you just won't get to participate in the allpha testing that's going to be happening unless you're a top earner (in one of the top earning houses that is). You'll just have to wait to broom race until the actual system comes out.

The duelling system has officially been released, so anyone can participate no matter if you're in the winning house or not. I believe it will be similar to Quidditch where there will be a captain and co-captain (you have to apply for that and apps are open now) and then a number of team members for each house. All the information is here
