As the time counted down to the start of the competition, Jo tried to tune out the other competitors and turned to stare hard at the wall of rock in front of them, trying to map out a path in advance. She found, though, once they were given the go ahead, that all her lofty ideas of a plan immediately slipped from her mind in the face of the actual climb. All she could think of was casting her eyes for the next handhold and holding as tight as she could. She had no idea whether the grips she was finding were the ones she had scouted out earlier, and it didn't matter. All that mattered was to keep going fast, without stopping to think or consider whether she was behind or ahead.

At least until the moment where she cast around for her next grip and saw nothing. The cliff suddenly seemed bare and sheer, with no conveniently protruding rocks or cracks that she could use to pull herself up in the immediate vicinity. At least, it seemed that way, but it proved to be only an illusion. After a few seconds of staring, she could spot some smaller bumps that would likely work for her purposes. Gingerly, she reached out.

It took all of her focus to climb past that section, especially when she heard what sounded very much like a body falling towards the ground, not far from her. She closed her eyes briefly, willing herself not to look as she slowly pulled herself up and up and up. Once the grips started becoming more plentiful, she chanced a look.

Her stomach swooped pleasantly as she took the distance towards the ground, and slightly less pleasantly as she noticed the organisers tending to someone. At least whoever had fallen seemed to be alive. She supposed that was the whole point of the climbing gear, to not have to rely on someone casting a well-timed levitation charm to keep you from plummeting to your death.

Magnus honestly didn’t know how his day could get any better, he was doing pretty well at this whole climbing thing got past all three units hadn’t fallen or anything so that filled him with pride, but then it got even better. Not only did he manage to past all the levels to the third one but Theodore seemed to be stuck on the lowest one. It was like an angel, a beautiful angel gambled on this competition and rolled the right dice to ensure Magnus got to witness this happy moment. He didn’t know what angel or spirt were around here but whoever it was, he was very thankful.

He just looked down at Theodore, his red eyes piercing through his soul as his face done something it usually wouldn’t do, it had this horrifying smile on him as Magnus felt pure joy, something he hadn’t felt in awhile in all honestly seeing Theodore like this. Honestly it made him want to laugh kind of, Magnus hadn’t laughed in a long time or at many things in life as he didn’t find them funny, this however was very funny. “HEY TWINKLE TOES! How’s the weather down there ?” He chuckled as he gave him a simple small wave as to not lose his balance before continuing to climb forward satisfied with his taunting.

"Oh! It's you! 5757-C."

"5757... C?" Owen had blinked, the initial warmth that had bubbled at @Demo Chatura's welcoming grin quickly fading to confusion. It occurred in that moment that he'd heard the boy babble off numbers in the past, but only now did it really register. Silence had spanned between them, palpably awkward. Before the Irish lad could inquire about what in Merlin the boy was talking about, however, another confusing sentiment was shared.

"You don't look like you're feeling poor! Nice!"

"What?" Owen cocked his head. "Why would I be feeling poor?" He glanced down to his attire—notably simplified for the day's more strenuous activities, but still boasting designer cuts and expensive fabrics. His usual wear. "I'm not—"

"Challenge..."

In an effort not to cringe under the scrutiny of the other boy, Owen channeled his brother's confidence, striking a pose with chest puffed and thumbs hooked into his pockets.

"Well, you look weak as hell"

Demo's observation knocked that false confidence right from Owen's lungs. He deflated, thoughts churning furiously to come up with some sort of rebuttal. It was a futile effort, foiled by the unfortunate truth in the statement. Heat rose to the Hufflepuff's cheeks, giving him the distinct appearance that he'd been out in the sun too long. In the face of such embarrassment, one might have assumed anger would fill the void, yet even that failed him, thwarted by Demo's big grin and thumbs up.

" GREAT! I'd love to see you win! You got a brother? You have... like.. a competition with him?"

Owen had no idea what a roller coaster was, but his emotions had definitely taken that ride. "I guess so." He shrugged, hands falling from his pockets to flap against his sides. "Not much of a competition, though.." The subsequent muttering was barely audible. He very much doubted he'd be able to hold a candle to Anrai's pristine grades. Nor did he care for the effort that would be needed to make the attempt. Definitely not worth it. Although that didn't mean he couldn't try to outshine his brother in other areas. Like actually having fun.

To that end, Owen wasted no time in jumping from his seat and hurrying to the base of the wall when called to do so. Safety gear was donned; hands were chalked; and a tongue eagerly lavished his lips as he stared up at what would prove to be the biggest test to his courage. So far. He glanced over to Demo. "Bet I can make it further than you," he teased, mostly in cheek. The other boy had proven himself to be quite strong and steady during tent set up. It wouldn't have surprised Owen if he could scale the cliff-face like some sort of transfigured spider.

Joke was on him, apparently. At the call to start, he hungrily reached for handholds. Although he hadn't exactly done something to this scale, it wasn't like climbing was foreign to Owen. There were plenty of rocky piles and trees near the Lochridge manor. And the ruins. He might not have been the most burly kid, but that also meant he didn't carry heavy bulk. Wiry and slim, he actually had a decently easy time.

Five feet...

Ten feet...

Fifteen.

He tried to keep his attention upwards, not just to avoid a loss of nerve should he look down and see how high he was, but also to keep his eye on the prize. Even when the handholds seemed to dwindle, the rocky face offering only small grips scattered in precarious places. Only when it seemed to ease up again did he chance to look back, mostly to gauge where his peers had gotten. Many were at a height with him, and he had a bit of an ego boost seeing that nobody was significantly farther along. He'd managed to keep pace so far! He shifted to cast a triumphant grin towards... where was Demo? The smile vanished, head swiveling. Until he spied his tent mate all the way at the bottom, unmoving.

"G'way!" Having been raised in a pureblood family, healing magic was a dime a dozen. It never even occurred to him that Demo would be anything other than fine. Look who looks weak as hell now. The thought came unbidden, laced with just a touch of guilt despite the tiny smirk that tugged at his lips. Nevertheless, he struggled to suppress a laugh, feeling mighty proud of himself for having outpaced the strange kid.

Even still, despite the surge in confidence, Owen's stomach lurched uncomfortably as his mind began to wonder what had happened, conjuring verisimilar first-person visions of losing grip and falling from his perch. "Right." His attention snapped forward, focus shifting to the grit of the rock beneath his fingers, the sturdiness beneath his feet. He had to stop dossing or he'd lose his advantage, or—more importantly—his nerve.

With rash abandon, he pressed forward, eager to try to continue to keep up with his peers, keen to press his luck. After all, how impressive would he be if he could swagger back to the tent later that day as the victor of the climbing race? For one reason or another, it was a flash of real affirmation—or really anything other than apathetic dismissal—from @Josephine Byrne, in particular, that urged him onwards.

Twinkle Toes. The first thing someone said to him was the annoying nickname given by none other than Magnus Blackwood, the said someone was the same person. Reason? Unknown. Theodore would rather keep it that way. "Mind your own business." Definitely not the way he would've talked to the older boy if his family were present, but he'd seen the boy often enough to know he doesn't have to be the most polite person with him. Then there was the ginger, curly-haired girl he'd already decided was not worth his energy. Even with that thought, he found it difficult to not respond to the impolite girl. "But you already are, aren't you? Surely that attitude wouldn't make you look like the healthiest person to be around."

Or maybe the raven should have taken Magnus' advice. Use your upper body. Bull. He thought at first. The thought didn't stay long in his mind as he struggled with his grip in the second unit. Pathetic, really. At least he didn't fall, but staying in unit two with some others he did not know while most of the participants could pass it easily? He hated that. The temptation to give the older boy, Magnus again, the middle finger was difficult to overcome, somehow Theodore managed to do that, though in his mind was he thinking of ways to ignore the existence of that guy until perhaps the end of the school year; though, he knew, it was impossible to do so.

Ivy moved with precise, measured power the moment the whistle blew. Hiking up the lower portion of her body was a warm-up of sorts, easy to perform and kept her in the good rhythm while creating space between her and the floorboards of the pavilion floor.

At the second zone, the wall cut sheer again, reduced to shards and small handholds barely bigger than grappling hooks. She heard Chuki hurling simple insults at a neutral-faced Theodore, both of them stalling at either side of Elara, Azzure, and Zephyr as they fought to make something out of the rock's meager nubs.

Ivy did not have the time to say much. Halting briefly, she thrust her hands deep into her chalk bag, sheathed her fingers in dry white powder. Seeing two moves ahead, Ivy avoided the blind panic that was beginning to ensnare the rest. Her core was tight as she set her boots into the minuscule cuts in the scorched rock, powering her way upward with smooth, controlled force.

Out of the little grips and into the third section, Ivy didn't slow down. Looking forward she saw Millie leading hard with Alfie right beside her. Ivy's smile grew a little wider as her eyes narrowed and she hauled herself up on their heels, leading the front-runners toward whatever the mountain would throw at them this time.

From the dirt of the potion-making pit to the hard, vertically unforgiving face of the cliff hit the second her fingers touched the stone that Denisse felt the change. The steady drum beat of the rock in the wizarding pit beneath was quickly replaced by the dull sound of her breathing and the squeaking rubber soles on bare granite.

The opening section went well enough-a simple vertical push, with plenty of flat faces to gain some speed and blow off those lingering anxious jitters. But once she hit the lip of the boundary to the second phase, the wide footholds disappeared.

Small grips.

Her fingertips fumbled to gain purchase, snagging on miniscule ridges of rock. Her pulse pounded in her ears, the faint freckles of broken up root matter on her palms felt like they were from a different life as her arms burned with muscle fatigue. Below her, a sudden commotion made her glance back down for a split second: Demo had fallen, smacked his head on an overhang, and gone tumbling into the domain of waiting staff and safety net.

But all she saw was a cold flicker of panic ignite in her stomach. No red sparks. No safety net.

Grit forced her gaze back up, forcing her focus against the distraction, and she pushed her hands into the foam until her knuckles turned white and her weight banged against her feet, delicately going around the pit that had taken Demo.

She gritted her teeth and pushed her way up into the third section, breathing like she'd just run a marathon, eyes still on the leaders who were a good thirty feet above her.

Ah, so Chuki now sees the meaning behind the competition. A single mistake nearly sent Chuki back to the very bottom. Some bad bruising came of it, but she was able to regain her grip quickly. She looked up to see others trekking by her. And with a careful look down, she saw someone already unconscious at the very bottom in the netting. She snorted. Too bad they wouldn't hear her laughter in their state. But surely the bruises they will experience after will be enough to shatter any form of pride they might have.

Chuki went back up to climbing in hopes of catching up with her opponents. She was not going to let a mere slip cause her to fail. Her tribe would be expecting her at her best, especially in their own homeland.

Chuki wiped her face a small nosebleed, and with angry determination, went back to climbing at full speed. Now as she began to climb higher and higher, she was beginning to feel gravity's own strength against her. The higher she climbed, the harder the strength it took to trek through rocks and false indents along the cliff wall. This wasn't a true mountain. Chuki's ancestors surely have climbed far greater things at an even greater cost. She will not let this be one of her failures.

Lucy had climbed the beginning effortlessly. The very first few holds were almost too easy in the way of giving a false sense of security and confidence that was hardly justified. It felt almost as if she were climbing ladders in difficulty, but not in technique.

After she had reached higher, she realised the holds were quickly becoming smaller. Small enough that you needed to actually put a little thought into how you placed your foot on one and how to actually hold on without your grip giving way once you put your weight on it. Lucy proceeded carefully, testing how best to grip each hold before moving on, avoiding shifting her weight around too much.

For a while, that was mostly all there was to it. Find a hold to put your foot on and somewhere proper to grip. Shift weight between two points to move, and repeat. It was different from climbing trees, sure, but not different enough to make her stop to think how she should be doing it.

Once the holds demanded less precise planning again, Lucy glanced upwards instead of down. There was still plenty of cliff left to climb. Good. She had just gotten started. She moved on.

Suprisingly enough, Marigold had actually managed not to fall during the climb. At first, she was just quietly following along with her companions, taking each steps with utmost caution while mentally praying hard that she won‘t make a fool of herself. She can only hope silently that her knees won’t give up on her the moment she attempted to climb or that her feet won‘t betray her by slipping against the uneven slopes. Thankfully so, it seems whoever heard her prayer had given her some liberty to still keep going on in the competition... much to her own relief.

It‘s not that she fear height—well, perhaps she does fear heights, especially when faced with such particular high height that a single misstep could lead to such unpleasant fall—she just doesn‘t want to get injured in this activity. After all, it was her very first outing overseas without either of her parents accompanying her. Just the thought of navigating around the unfamiliar place all by herself was overwhelming enough without having to worry about the additional possibility of getting concussion and ending up being sent into the hospital.

She felt absurd being preoccupied with such things when everyone seemed fired up and totally determined to win this challenge, but Mari can‘t just herself. She can only dread the thought of her parents receiving a letter informing them that their daughter got herself into an accident simply because she’s too foolish to participate in such perilous activity without realizing her own limitations.

So with that thought, she can only hope that she‘ll manage to finish the climb with nothing to worry about. But the earthen child could only hope...
