Muggle All The Way

MUGGLE ALL THE WAY
As students from all the schools nations made their way into the lands of Uagadou by portkey, they would find themselves blocked by a long barrier. Standing in front of this barrier were Headmaster Albrecht and five wilderness experts, the tent supplies organized in piles, next to them. Their postures were strong and dignified, as they stood upon a raised circular platform, about seven meters in diameter, or 21 feet for those who use the imperical system, for the purpose of a demonstration. The Durmstrang headmaster cast the amplifying charm and spoke to the crowd of students with an accent that could not be placed, a mix of all the countries he had resided in. "Welcome to the wilderness, students. Before you can enter to the opening ceremony, I and these experts in front of you, require you to pay attention and learn to set up these two varieties of tents, as well as learn to tear them down. There will be no magic allowed in this experience. These tents will be carried with you throughout the week and will be your home away from home, in these wild lands. Your tent supplies will be handed out after the opening ceremony along with sleeping materials and culturally appropiate gifts. You will be responsible for these items from then on. Older Durmstrang students who are more familiar with tent setting up, may assist as needed. "
With this introduction, Emery and his assistants ran through the steps to set up the Berber tent, to be used during the students' days in Uagadou.

Poles: The tension is held by wooden poles, traditionally made from apricot, date palm, or acacia wood. The center pole is a flat banana shaped roof beam called hammar.
Anchors: Because desert winds can be ferocious, the tent is anchored with long wooden stakes driven deep into the ground, connected by heavy ropes woven from animal hair or palm fiber.
Cover: Made entirely from animal fibers, specifically black goat hair mixed with camel wool, this organic weave breathes in summer heat but swells when wet to become waterproof.
Flooring: A natural weaved, thick carpet, that covers the entire floor.

Assemble the Frame
Raise the two wooden support poles ("tarselt") at the front and back of the tent. Place the roof beam ("akhammar") across the top to connect the poles and provide structural support
Attach the Panels to the Frame
Drape the tent panels over the roof beam and poles. Ensure the panels hang evenly on all sides. Secure the panels to the poles using ropes or ties if available
Secure the Tent to the Ground
Use tent pegs to fix the side panels to the ground. This stabilizes the tent and prevents it from collapsing in wind or sand

This wide tent made of goat hair, camel wool, and sheep wool is naturally weatherproofing, protecting you from rain. The naturally dark fibers that are dyed many colours, create a natural insulation and air circulation, keeping you cool during the day and warm at night. Al Sadu weaving is used to partition the different sleeping areas for each tent mate, along with a separate area for bathroom purposes. This is the only magical portion of the tent with functioning toilets, so as to scare off those who are not used to the wilderness as such. Beautiful figures of the girl in white, the Dream Messenger, will be gifted to every participant of this trip, along with a pillow with an embroidered image of the facade of Uagadou. In honour of the Phoenix, each tent member will be offered a weaved bag also in the Al Sada tradition, with a phoenix design, that will be allowed to use throughout the trip and keep. The bag will already be filled with necessary tools for this section of the wilderness experience, along with blankets. Students are required to set up the tents, pillows, and blankets themselves.
Once this demonstration was finished, Emery and his assistants instructed the students to begin building this tent in the tent groups they had been assigned to. If any groups were struggling, the headmaster as well as the wilderness experts would walk them through more personally and answer any questions that they may have.
They took the stage once more once it seemed everyone was comfortable with this part of the demonstration. Emery cast the amplifying charm once more and announced, "Now that you have built the tent to completion, now I want you all to tear down this tent as fast as possible, placing everything into the appropriate bags, so that you can carry the materials throughout the trip. I suggest you decide now within your groups who will be carrying what supplies. Most quarrels after all result from tiny misunderstandings and annoyances and these can become dangerous in the wild. After this, we will time you to see how fast you can set the tents up and tear it down. Shout "Into the Wild" as a group when this is done.
After this practice run was over, the next demonstration began. Now, it was time to build the tent that the students would use to protect themselves from the cold of the Durmstrang wilderness.

Base Frame: These lattice walls are often made from larch, birch, or pine, carefully dried, cut, and sanded for durability. The walls are tied together using camel sinew or ropes, creating a flexible yet strong structure.
Center Pole: A central support column, made of wood, and semi-hollow to allow for a smoke-hole.
Roof: Rafters tied together in a form resembling a cone.
Cover: Sheep wool felt which provides insulation against extreme temperatures. The felt is carefully layered, often from north to south, with overlapping edges to ensure warmth and protection from rain or snow

Frame Construction: The process begins with assembling the wooden walls. These are arranged in a circular shape, forming the structure’s base. The walls are then joined with a central support column.
Roof Assembly: Wooden rafters are attached to the center column, creating the yurt’s dome-shaped roof. These rafters are connected in a way that gives the structure stability, allowing it to withstand strong winds.
Felt Covering: Once the frame is complete, multiple layers of felt, often made from sheep wool, are draped over the structure. These felt layers provide insulation, keeping the ger warm in winter and cool in summer.

This traditional Slavic yurt is constructed with a lattice of Siberian pine, designed to be moved easily. This lattice is shaped then kiln dried to keep its shape. The roof is cone shaped with a hole to let the smoke of the central fire pit out, a sky light of a chimney. The yurt is then covered with sheep wool that keeps it insulated from the cold. Inside, the students will set up their bedding, which is composed of a colorful mat of Chiprovtsi kilim (a traditional weaved cloth) with a layer of cotton, and a blanket made of wool dyed brown to keep the students warm. Each pillow will be embroidered with a design of a red dragon, representing the school's firey strength. Along with this embroidered red dragon, each student will recieve a miniature welded sword with the name Stribog engraved in its hilt. The sword is welded, however, it is only as big as an earing and could not be used for weaponry. This is done in honor of the blacksmithing of Durmstrang's previous headmistress. As with the previous tent, this tent will also have an enchanted toilet, so as to keep this trip unembarrasing for all.

Xio gasped with delight the moment the Portkey dropped her and her tentmates onto the grounds of Uagadou. The air wrapped around her at once—warm, wet, alive with humidity—and she breathed it in like she’d been starved of it. It clung to her skin, kissed her cheeks, and made everything feel vivid, heavy, and electric. She almost laughed aloud at how much she loved it. The moisture in the air was so thick she felt as though she could taste it on her tongue.
As they made their way toward Headmaster Albrecht and the gathered wilderness experts, Xio had to fight to keep herself from squealing. Excitement buzzed through her so fiercely that standing still felt impossible; she bounced in place with every few steps, her attention darting everywhere at once.
She whispered quickly, unable to hold it in.“Bella, have you ever been camping?”Before she could unleash another dozen questions on poor Bella, Headmaster Albrecht’s voice rose above the crowd, cutting cleanly through the excited murmur of the students. Every head turned.“I never have. How are we even supposed to turn a pile of tent pieces into a real living space? And what do you think we’re going to run into out there? Creatures, I mean. Do you think they’ll be dangerous?”
Xio’s hands twitched with the urge to rush forward and examine every piece of their new temporary home. She wanted to kneel in the dirt and inspect the supplies, to sort the canvas and poles and ropes with her own hands, but she forced herself to stay in line with the others.“These tents will accompany you throughout the week and serve as your home away from home in these wild lands,” he announced. “Your tent supplies will be distributed after the opening ceremony, along with sleeping materials and culturally appropriate gifts. From that point forward, you will be responsible for them. Older Durmstrang students, those more experienced with tent assembly, may assist as needed. ”
“I think the first thing we should do is split the pieces up so nobody has to carry everything alone,” she said, glancing around at the group. “What do you think?”

Bella excitedly stood with Xio and their other friends and teammates, such as Irene and Barry, as they gathered around Headmaster Albrecht for the instruction. Riding -- and dropping down -- from the portkey had been a truly wild experience that made her stomach feel mushy, but she would not remove it, ever.
As soon as Xio got time, she started to ask Bella questions.
"“Bella, have you ever been camping? I never have. How are we even supposed to turn a pile of tent pieces into a real living space? And what do you think we’re going to run into out there? Creatures, I mean. Do you think they’ll be dangerous?” Xio asked.
Bella chuckled. She had, in fact, gone camping with her parents every summer. Being half-blood, her father, who is muggle-born, insisted that she learn "basic survival skills" just in case, such as making a fire, learning how to forage for food, first aid, and, how to set up a tent quickly. But she had never set up these half-magical tents before, and not with friends, so she was excited to do that.
"Yeah, I've been camping with my parents every summer. It's pretty fun! I'm sure the teachers will explain how to set up the tents. I mean, I've never set up these specific tents, but I've set up other ones! As for creatures, who knows what we may see? I don't think the headmaster would purposefully put us at risk, but it is like a survival experience the 'muggle' way, I won't put aside the possibility of meeting some dangerous animals. It's an adventure, all right!" Bella exclaimed.
After the explanation, Xio suggested that they split up the work, and she agreed. Turning around, Bella looked at her seven teammates, who she had all seen in the halls and knew briefly but were familiar with only some of them.
"Yeah, we should definitely all work together in carrying and building it! First, do you all want to find a good spot to build? Also, what are you all most looking forward to this week? I'm most excited in getting to do this with you all, and knowing you guys better, and having a lot of fun! And I heard there were games and competitions and stuff like that, too!"

By the way his stomach felt it seemed the thing had taken him on a round trip of outer space as well. Less than fifteen minutes, and he was already sweating too. But he was no complainer. Despite the heat and upset tummy he itched to go exploring the local fauna. Sadly it seemed like that would have to wait, as the entire student body was quickly roped into a teaching moment of some sort. Setting up tents. He almost laughed. He had been helping with that ever since he could walk and be in the way of his parents. Still, these tents were different than his home. There were more poles that were supposed to support the roof, and generally more fabric.
He paid careful attention during the demonstration. At least as well as a restless boy of twelve was able to. He got the important steps at least, or so he thought. Then they were set to work. Told to group up, but he was determined to do this on his own. It was his area of expertise after all! He didn’t quite follow the instructions. Why would he when he saw a more effective way of doing things? He started by attaching the roof beam to the support poles. Seemed only logical when he was determined to do this on his own.
He managed somehow to raise the whole thing, though it was dangerously touch and go for a moment. Then he took a good hold of the tent panels and started throwing them across the roof beam. At first it looked sort of alright. Then the whole thing started to wobble. Quick on his feet he ran to support the support pole that seemed the most wonky. He could still do this, definitely! Not leaving the pole he was keeping upright, he tried to yank on a tent flap to even it out. A careful tug did nothing at all, and so he yanked harder, and then harder still. The damned thing finally came loose and adjusted at least sort of right.
Just in the nick of time a helpful hand arrived to take his spot. Max nodded gratefully before he moved along to secure the tent. Finally he stepped back to enjoy his work. It was sort of wonky, and had some quite large gaps not covered by fabric. But he was happy. Smilingly he took his place for the next demonstration.

The pull of the portkey still left him reeling every time he would use that mode of transportation but it’s what he used the most anyway. He was once again, in unfamiliar ground…Uagadou… in Africa. Thinking how far away from Swansea he was already interesting and visiting another magical school was still something he found difficult to treat as ordinary. Hogwarts had completely changed what he thought the world looked like when he was eleven. Now there were students from several international schools gathering in the same place, speaking in different accents and carrying customs he knew almost nothing about. His eyes swept around the unfamiliar surroundings and settled on the long barrier preventing them from going any farther. Looks like sightseeing would have to wait.
He joined the other students at the raised platform where the Headmaster and the wilderness staff were waiting. His attention was fixed on the piles of equipment beside them which includes wooden poles, ropes, fabric, stakes. Whatever he expected their first activity in Uagadou to involve, piles of tent pieces were not very high on the list. The announcement came that no magic would be allowed in this experience. Was it supposed to make things difficult? Maybe for other kids, but not for him. Being told not to use magic didn’t bother him in the slightest, it eased some of the tension he felt in participating in this international wilderness event. He was surrounded by students who probably knew spells he never heard of, older students with years more magical experience than him, and people who grew up within the wizarding world.
He understood wooden poles and rope but not these particular tents admittedly. He paid close attention as the demonstration began. The staff introduced the Berber tent they would use during their time around Uagadou, and explained each piece as they showed how to fit them together. His gaze followed the movements of their hands while listening to the terms. The tarselt supported the front and back, the akhammar crossed between them. Panels went over the structure, followed by ropes and stakes to hold everything in place. The construction was unfamiliar but the principles were not. The staff proceeded to explain that the stakes needed to be driven deep because of powerful desert winds. A badly secured post wouldn’t become stronger by hoping it would hold, he learned that much from fences at home.
The tent material was interesting, goat hair with camel wool, to breathe in the heat and tighten when wet to resist rain. “Clever…” he murmured. He knew wool at least as he handled some of it back home but nothing like this. Once they were instructed to begin, he checked all supplies first while mentally going back through the demonstration. “These two first, then the beam goes across them.” He took hold of one of the wooden poles and helped raise it into position. It was heavier than it looked from a distance, but physical work didn’t bother him. With a comfortable grip, he moved until the support stood properly. The covering caused more trouble. One side was hanging lower than the other after they first draped it over the frame. “No, that’s wrong.” Rather than trying to compensate with the ropes, he moved helped moved the whole panel until the weight was evenly across both sides. “Now that’s better.” The stakes were more familiar, he pushed one into the ground and then gave the attached rope a hard tug to test it but it moved. He pulled the stake out and pushed it deeper the second time, when he tested it again, it didn’t move which was suppose to be good news. It was not perfect but it was standing and seeing an actual shelter there now was satisfying.
But the Headmaster l told them to tear the whole thing down and all he could do was stare at him. What? They’ve just finished it. The reason became obvious they’ll be carrying these supplies throughout the trip and would be timed on both setting up and dismantling them. He gathered one length and looped the rope then stuffing it into the nearest bag. The poles went together, stakes together, ropes together. His father would have plenty to say if he ever returned farm equipment in one enormous tangled heap, and he suspected the same principle would be applicable here. The possibility of being timed brought out more interest, now he wanted to see how quickly they could do it.
The second shelter was completely different. The staff explained this was the type of structure they would use in the cold around Durmstrang. He had never seen a yurt being assembled before, the wooden sections expanded and curved around to form the base. He wondered how much strain each section could take before the whole thing became rigid. Wood carving was one thing but understanding how separate pieces of wood could work together to support an entire shelter was another.

⚔︎ Magnus Was honestly excited when he heard about the wilderness event, this was the perfect thing to take his mind off of a lot that he had going on at the moment. Between the outcome of his parents divorce and custody battle a long with Vasilius not joining in this event staying in Durmstrang and focusing on his studies Magnus has been a tad bit bummed out more recently. So getting his hands dirty was something he really needed and what better way than to build a tent the muggle way. Sure magic would be easier but building something by hand was much more fun, people just needed to picture it was one tiny little puzzle or maybe a bigger more complex one but still a puzzle after all!
There was just one issue, all of his tent mates could not do any heaving lifting to save their lives, or well not all of them their were a sliver of hope for one of them who seemed to be strong and buffer than the others but definitely would still struggle with a lot of things. Magnus assumed he would just have to do things by himself which he was used too but he was still confused as how do most of them go to Durmstrang yet aren’t really strong, was quite a shame really. He didn’t even know who the other two nobodies were nor did he care to learn their names.
He turned to look at a few of them before he decided to speak up. “Hey! Twinkle Toes, you seem to be the strongest one here help Twinkie over there pick up some of these pieces to help support the tent.” As he yelled at them he figured they’d figure out who was who, twinkle toes was Theodore as it just fit him he didn’t know why, while Twinkie was Kazimer, why did Magnus call him Twinkie you may ask him ? Well to Magnus he seemed weak and too much of a sweet person, kinda like a Twinkie which was some sort of muggle food he saw when he was with his father out shopping before. Then there was his two pains in his ass, Harvey Dunn or as Magnus named him the pup without bite, and then Kullervo Ikonen, or Drama Queen as he called him. Both had already annoyed Magnus before so he honestly disliked being near them anyway.
“Aye! Pup and Drama Queen at least pretend to be useful for once and help.” Was that harsh, sure but Magnus didn’t appreciate what the Pups barking Mutt of a father did to him as well as being called a theif by that Drama Queen so ofc he’d be petty.⚔︎

The Portkey landing left Elara a little unsteady. She took a breath before looking around. Uagadou already felt different from home. It's warmer than I expected. The warm air, the unfamiliar surroundings, and all the students arriving from different schools made her look around quietly for a moment. She soon turned her attention to Headmaster Albrecht and the wilderness experts. Elara listened to the instructions and watched as they demonstrated how to put the tents together. She tried to remember the steps as they went. The poles first. Then the roof beam, followed by the panels and ropes. It looked simple enough when they showed it. Hopefully it's as easy as it looks.
When Bella asked what everyone was looking forward to, Elara looked around at the group. "I'm looking forward to exploring," she said after a moment. Her eyes wandered around Uagadou again. "I've never been somewhere like this before." There were already plenty of things she wanted to see. She just didn't know where they would get the chance to go yet. "And maybe seeing some of the animals," she added. She gave a small smile. "From a distance." After Bella mentioned finding a good place for the tent, Elara looked at the supplies nearby. "I don't really know what makes a good camping spot." She glanced around the area. "Maybe we could look around first?" Elara stayed where she was after that. She didn't want to choose a spot without knowing what they needed to look for. So she waited for the others to decide.

I had gotten to Uagadou earlier than most, for I wanted to be at the welcoming ceremony. Now, I needed to build a tent without magic. The Headmaster of Durmstrang announced the rules. "Welcome to the wilderness, students. The tents looked hard to build. How on earth do Muggles manage to do anything without the aid of magic? This would be impossible. I hoped that there was at least one person in my group who was Muggle-born and had made up a tent before!

Irene stood with her friends, excited and maybe just a tiny bit scared.
She looked mildly surprised as Xio said that she had never been to camping before. But then, she was a pure-blood...
Xio suggested that they split up the work, and Irene agreed with Bella. She looked nervously around her tenmates who, most of them, she only knew by their looks.
'Yeah, we should definitely all work together in carrying and building it! First, do you all want to find a good spot to build? Also, what are you all most looking forward to this week? I'm most excited in getting to do this with you all, and knowing you guys better, and having a lot of fun!
'I have no idea where we should start building,' Irene said, signing and looking around. 'but this is a really good chance to get to know each other, so maybe we can split into groups and change groups after we finish one part of the tent?'
'And I heard there were games and competitions and stuff like that, too!' Bella exclaimed, excited.
'I'm really no good on competitions,' Irene said, rather troubled. 'But let's worry about that later. Er...where should we set up our tents?'

It had been the first time Jay had travelled by portkey, and she was ready to never do it again. She crouched down on the ground and stared at the ground, trying to not throw up or faint from the sensation of travelling halfway across the world in the blink of an eye.
Never again, oh gods that's horrid... whoever invented that is a genius and a demon at the same time
She vowed, slowly looking up at what was in front of her after the nausea faded so she could get a feel for her surroundings. There were a few adults standing in front of the group that had gathered around and Jay listened intently as they spoke about setting up tents and carrying them around. Jay vaguely remembered going camping with Sunny a couple of years ago but couldn't really recall how they set up the tent.
Oh well, it shouldn't matter too much and probably much different then that anyways
]Jay wasn't too worried about not being able to use magic, after all she hadn't really been familiar with magic until bout three or four years ago, she had known it existed of course but she had lived most of her life without magic to help her so this might even play to her strengths.
She noticed the piles of fabric and poles behind them and nodded to herself, seems she was right, these tents looked nothing like the muggle tent that Sunny had stored away in a cupboard somewhere. As they went through the steps, Jay watched and eventually had what she thought would be a good enough understanding of how the tents were set up to get one done. Once they were finished, other students started moving towards the tent supplies and Jay followed quickly, not eager to be left behind.
Picking up a few things she found an area where she could set the tent up, she remembered that the tent shouldn't be in a ditch or below trees and there were a few more things that she couldn't quiet recall... but then again this was a very different experience then her last camping trip but even so, she seemed to enjoy this more. Maybe it was because she felt like she had more freedom here?
She held up the poles and started to assemble the frame, struggling at first to create a decent shape but after about ten minutes of thinking slowly and going over what she knew, Jay managed to figure out how the frame clicked into place and she quickly got the frame up, along with the poles.
Next I have to add the covering...
Jay draped the covering over the frame and made sure it was even on both sides, this part was a bit harder as she kept pulling it too far or not far enough and she kept having to check but eventually she managed to make sure the weight was spread evenly enough before she secured it to the poles.
Ok, I get how to use the stakes at least, that's familiar enough
