Fencing was an unfamiliar sport for the Wizarding world. Although the idea of it was always bound by aristocrats or people who had significant taste, which may not seem that unfamiliar after all. It is more than hitting targets, as Fencing is often called "chess at the speed of light." Every attack is a question; every parry is an answer.

On the other half of the training area, significantly separated from the others by a series of low wooden barriers, lies the fencing area. Two narrow strips of packed earth, measuring 14 meters long and 2 meters wide, make up the perfect setup for an intense match. Surrounding this are carefully placed boundary markers, placed around each strip. The piste serves its purpose, and there the match will begin.

The crowd circled at a distance around the match. Where the players took their steps onto the fencing strip, each opposite the other. The tension was hard not to give away. Each held their foil.

Avery took position between them. Raising her hand.

“En Garde!”

Each student poised themselves into position.

“Ready?”

A pause.

“And Begin!”

Chelsea had forgotten why she even chose to participate in fencing. Was it not dangerous considering the fact one could get stabbed? Oh suppose that was too pessimistic even for the aloof Chelsea Mitzchel, and who was Chelsea if not aloof and unfazed? Oh well she'll get this over with and it will be bygone by the time she return to her cabin once more or going to the makeshift cafeteria for a small meal that can elevate her energy for the day. She begrudgingly goes towards the campgrounds where the piste took place.

Once she had gotten herself prepared, Chelsea would have a recollection on what she had learned about fencing once with her Oma Heidi who had a fencing manuel before.

The definition of fencing as she had recalled was the sport of fighting with swords or the material used to build property barriers. Now the following terms; Allez the french command given by the referee to begin fencing, En Garde, the standard ready position assumed by fencers before a bout starts. Along with feint and other action terms that concern fencing. However she committed to stay engaged any sign of aloofness was not tolerated as of now.

The brunette raised her foil like she did with her wand.

Suited up in the white protective gear, as is the norm when one is about to partake in the noble sport of fencing, Amalie warily stepped onto the piste. Her expression was composed, even behind the mask. She adjusted her glove for one last time, and wrapped her fingers firmly around the foil. Today's weapon was at least three times the length of her wand, and weighed as proportionally. The similarities the sport had to duelling were rather eerie.

Amalie had fenced exactly once before. It had been two summers ago, when she was in Nice, where she would have been this year as well, were it not for the summer camp. She had visited a fencing club near the Leclerc Estate with her father and a cousin sister. It was safe to say, the session had not fared as well as she might have wanted it to, but one cannot be good at everything, especially as a beginner.

So here she was again, today. Hundreds of kilometres away from the piste she had fenced on last time, but it was undoubtedly the same mechanics. She reached the en garde line and lowered her knees, right foot in front of the left. Today she would reclaim her place, hopefully. She took a measured breath, keeping her grip relaxed. The match was yet to begin, and for now, she was content to study her opponent, whom she had never seen before until now, and wait for Avery's command. En Garde. She was on guard. Ready? She was surprised for a moment, expecting this command to be in French as well. And Begin!

Avery awaited the fast paced game that would keep her on her toes. The players, Amalie and Chelsea were as focused as ever, their foils raised as she uttered the words, "Begin".

Amalie took off with a Feint, moving towards her opponent, foil raised. Chelsea, anticipating an attack, readily lifted her foil in an execution of Counter-Parry, circling her opponent's blade with her own. The blade caught Amalie's as she attempted to hit from the side, but this didn't seem to stop the girl. Just as Chelsea's blade circled back up, Amalie took the opportunity to shift her foil to the other side. Before Chelsea could react to the turn of action, the blade had found its mark.

"Halt!", Avery exclaimed. "Touch left", she said, pointing towards Amalie. This face off was quite brilliant. Chelsea seemed to have anticipated her opponent's move, but Amalie had a few tricks up her sleeve. A well executed tactic indeed. Chelsea's stance though, deserved its own appraisal. Both players clearly had a lot of potential, but it was strategy, time, presence of mind, and not to mention luck, that would decide how the upcoming rounds would turn out, and Avery was the most invested.

"En Garde!", she exclaimed, as the fencers once again regained their positions. She said, in French this time, "Pret...", letting out a slight breath, she added, "Allez!"

"And Begin!" The moment Avery's command rang across the piste, Amalie moved. She raised her foil and advanced towards Chelsea, deliberately suggesting an attack. Her opponent's foil lifted to meet hers and the blades met with a sharp clash. Chelsea's foil circled around Amalie's and struck against the narrow blade with a clang, intercepting the Slytherin's attack. For a brief moment, Amalie thought her opening had been lost. But no, she wasn't done yet.

As Chelsea's blade began to circle back upwards, Amalie shifted her own foil to the opposite side, changing the angle of her attack before her opponent could react. She extended her arm, and the tip of her blade found its mark. "Halt!" came the command from Avery. Amalie immediately withdrew, lowering her foil as Avery called the touch in her favour. She couldn't help the flicker of satisfaction that crossed her face beneath the mask. Perhaps her previous fencing session had not been entirely useless after all.

She returned to her starting position and settled once more into en garde, gazing at her opponent. Chelsea was quite strong as well, with quick reflexes, having seemingly anticipated Amalie's first attack. One point. There was still a long way to go, and she certainly wasn't going to let this little victory make her complacent. En Garde. The remaining commands came in French this time. Prêt. Allez.

Chelsea went with defense and decided to counter parry her opponent's moves whichever it may be she would be defending her position hard. However that would not be carried out physically and only mentally. She waited for the moderator's command to commence the match. This was only the beginning and she was anticipating match point. Now Avery was in between the two girls who had their stance ready. She looked up and spoke.

"Ready? Go!" the moderator announced quite loudly and off they went

Chelsea observed her opponent Amalie and noticed potential with the way she carried herself physically. Tall in stature like Chelsea herself but, yet again she was much taller still. Chelsea had a back for athleticism but she never confirmed or denied the rumour of her being a prodigy. Sports was not her thing in any shape or form but it was just that she knew and was educated on fencing and such topics regarding it was in her mind straight away. So regardless of what the public thought she was just ordinary, many other children her age was like her likewise in smarts and wit.

Her foil clashed against Amalie's and surprisingly she too had great strategy but alas only one could be carried out and her opposing person claimed victorious. Chelsea only smirked under her pitched dimmed masked clever, but too clever.

"Very clever miss." she directed towards Amalie. Introductions later.

And.... action! That was what it felt like for Avery when her command "Allez"! brought about liveliness and zest on the piste. Chelsea moved in for the attack this time, foil in hand, fire in her eyes. Amalie was ready as ever, awaiting her opponent's move.

Chelsea initiated the attack with a beat— a tactical move used to trigger a defense from the opponent and clearing the way to launch an attack. She sharply tapped her blade against Amalie's. One had to praise the Slytherin's presence of mind, for she didn't fall for this trick. Her defence was rightly timed, not leaving a moment for Chelsea to make a hit. Amalie swiftly moved her foil, catching her opponent's and circling it with her own; successfully deflecting an intended attack. Very well played indeed.

Before either player could make the next move, Avery noticed that the time period for the round ended. "Halt!", Time!", she called, thus indicating that no further action could be made till the next round commenced. Avery's throat started drying up. Who knew refereeing the match itself would prove tiring, not as much as the players ofcourse. She regained her composure as she called once again, "En Garde! Pret...", a pause, "Allez!"

Fencing Match #4 Summer Camp 2026
Right after she had made her remark she went back to assumed position and stayed firm with her feet on the ground. Chelsea was not letting her opponent get complacent after a trivial win, she could still get to break tie if she can be quick enough to think of a strategy for her to even reach such a feat, for only a few rounds into the fencing match she can be certain victory was secured if she played her cards well enough not to show them off.

Chelsea had remembered somewhat of what her Gramps Jacques had told her as an advice for when she's in a tight spot, and she quotes in french; "chercher un nouvel angle d'approche", which in English would have been "look for a new angle." There is nothing better than getting a fresh pair of eyes when a situation gets you stumped. Likewise, she decided to go look the other way. If she wanted to play smart she'd decide to go defend her status and position as of current, if it would be beneficial to stand her ground.

After analyzing the current situation, Chelsea held her trusty foil ready to attack once more, in hopes she calculated just right.

Amalie watched Chelsea carefully as the other girl advanced, her grip remaining steady on the foil as she awaited the attack. The sharp tap against her blade came almost immediately, and she was almost taken by surprise. Almost. Chelsea was attempting to disrupt her defense and create an opening for an attack. She wouldn't give her one.

She maneuvered her foil swiftly, catching Chelsea's blade before it could proceed with the intended attack. Circling her own blade around her opponent's, she guided it away and successfully deflected the attack. Soon Avery's command followed, "Halt! Time!" No points for either of them.

Amalie lowered her foil and stepped back, taking a measured breath. She glanced at Chelsea through the mesh of her mask, as the other girl's words echoed in her mind; "Very clever miss." She was too focused on the match to reply earlier, so she took the time to do so now, before Avery gave the command to start the next round. "I could say the same of you." It was true — the other girl had her own tricks up her sleeve. The irony of this round was that Amalie had used the same counter-parry to defend herself, that Chelsea had used to defend herself the previous round.

The girl was certainly not lacking in strategy, nor in athleticism. It was going to be close, and it was up to Amalie to build up on the 1-0 point lead. Avery called them back to position, "En garde! Prêt… Allez!"
