Fencing was an unfamiliar sport for the Wizarding world. Although the idea of it was always bound by aristocrats or people who had significant taste, which may not seem that unfamiliar after all. It is more than hitting targets, as Fencing is often called "chess at the speed of light." Every attack is a question; every parry is an answer.

On the other half of the training area, significantly separated from the others by a series of low wooden barriers, lies the fencing area. Two narrow strips of packed earth, measuring 14 meters long and 2 meters wide, make up the perfect setup for an intense match. Surrounding this are carefully placed boundary markers, placed around each strip. The piste serves its purpose, and there the match will begin.

The crowd circled at a distance around the match. Where the players took their steps onto the fencing strip, each opposite the other. The tension was hard not to give away. Each held their foil.

Avery took position between them. Raising her hand.

“En Garde!”

Each student poised themselves into position.

“Ready?”

A pause.

“And Begin!”

Diana adjusted her grip on the foil and made sure that it sat comfortably in her hand before she settled into her stance. The protective gear felt unfamiliar and there was something distinctly different about standing on the piste with a foil in hand rather than simply watching someone else demonstrate the sport. Still she reminded herself that she had come here to try something new. During the entire summer camp she's been trying new things.

Her muted grey green eyes focused on Alfie through the protective mask. She didn't know much of him as a fencer yet nor did she actually know him at all. That meant there was little point in making assumptions about how he would approach the match. Diana instead found herself doing what she naturally did whenever she encountered something unfamiliar she observed. She paid attention to the distance between them and the way he held himself and quietly took in whatever details she could without letting herself become distracted by the small crowd that was gathered around the piste. The words Avery had spoken before the match had came back to her. Every attack is a question; every parry is an answer. It made sense now that she was actually standing there.

Diana took a steady breath and shifted her weight and made sure she remained balanced and ready to move. Her nerves were there but they weren't overwhelming her. If anything they sharpened her concentration. She knew she couldn't predict everything that would happen during the match especially when this was her first real fencing competition but she could pay attention and adapt.

Her fingers slightly tightened around the foil. She glanced briefly toward Avery before returning her gaze to her opponent. At the signal to begin Diana moved forward and kept her movements measured and her attention firmly fixed on Alfie. Diana was on the offense while Alfie was on defense. There was no room for daydreaming now. Every movement mattered. Diana remained focused on the match and was ready to see what happened next. Diana didn't really care about winning she just wanted to see how this fencing match would turn out. If she won that'd be great, if she lost that'd be even greater, because she can learn from this match and can do better on her next one if she ever had another one.

Alfie had never held a fencing foil. It was much lighter than he expected, and rather whippy. He extended it experimentally in the pose he’d seen others use. It made him think of his childhood (a few years ago when he was an actual child, not the mature eleven-year-old he was today).

He had always enjoyed tales of chivalry. His folks bought him books about Arthur and the knights of the round table, as well as Spanish tales in the same tradition, with his favorite, Amadis of Gaul. Naturally he’d played at sword fighting any time he’d found a stick or rod of the appropriate length. He’d decided he was too old for it a couple of years back so it had been a while since he’d held any sort of sword-shaped thing in his hand, (unless you counted his wand, and considering how short his wand was, Alfie did not count it).

A fencing foil was nothing like a sword, not really, but it was quite a bit like the sticks he played with as a child. He had a perverse desire to wave the foil around and whack things with it. He restrained himself, of course, because he was a mature eleven-year-old. He was far too self-conscious to make a spectacle of himself when anyone was watching, and of course there were people watching now.

He lowered the foil and examined the tip. He wondered just how sharp the pointy end was and how much it might hurt to be stuck with it. Not too much he decided, so pain was not something he should worry about. He was nervous, just the same. Alfie hated doing things in public he was not good at, and he had no reason to believe he was going to be good at this.

Alfie sighed and took his position. It was his fault for signing up for fencing. He’d just been so bored and fencing had sounded like the most interesting choice. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad. Perhaps his opponent had never fenced before either. It couldn’t be as bad as boxing had been. If he failed no one was going to punch him in the face.

There’s a positive thought, that is.

His eyes flicked between the moderator and his opponent, waiting for the signal. As soon as it was given his opponent advanced.

Alfie’s only thought was, ‘Don’t let her hit you’.

23>17, Point to Diana
Avery watched intently as both the players— Diana and Alfie took their places, foils steady in hand, confidence etched across their faces. Avery was intrigued to find out what this match would bring.

As she uttered the words "Begin!", Diana surged forward with much confidence, her footwork quick and precise. She charged at her opponent attempting a hit, but Alfie stepped back quickly, executing a Retreat, the blades clanking slightly as they broke contact. Just when it seemed that he had dodged successfully, Diana unwaveringly shifted her foil to the other side catching him off guard before he could regain his composure. It seemed the girl had planned to play her opponent all along. Her blade had found its mark, showcasing a successful Feint.

"Halt!, called Avery, "Touch left", she said, her tone crisp and certain, pointing towards Diana. Avery had quite enjoyed this round. She had noticed the players' remarkable stances, the way they held their ground with practiced discipline. Her anticipation for the next rounds increased. This match had already become one that was worth watching. Her voice echoed, "En Garde!", the players regained their positions. She gave the commands, "Pret...", letting out a slight breath, she added, "Allez!"

Fencing Match #7
Alfie felt a rush of excitement as the signal to start was given. This turned to elation for the few seconds in which he believed that his quick footwork had allowed him to avoid his partner's foil. He was grinning even as her blade shifted under his outstretched arm and he felt a light but distinct jab through the padding of his vest. Glancing down he saw a small dot of red appear on the fabric where her sword had touched him. Clever girl, he thought ruefully.

A halt was called and the words "Touch left", confirming what he already knew.

Alfie did his best to revive his initial smile and try to hide his disappointment. If you are going to lose, he thought, it's best to at least appear to be magnanimous. No point being a git about it. .

"Fair play!" he called out pleasantly. "Have you done this before or do you just have a knack for it?"

Alfie resumed his starting position, releasing his breath slowly to calm himself, as he waited for signal to start again. It was time to go on the offensive. He was conscious that he'd have be faster this time and not relax his guard until he was sure a point had been scored.
