Solène almost didn’t want to get ice cream now that Orion had announced that he had a surprise for her afterward. She might have had a high level of patience, but she was still a kid. On top of that, he had bought her the book she had been looking at! He was positively spoiling her today, and she was bound to let him. So, any further inquiries into what the surprise was would wait, for now. Astrid was also keen to give them some quality time together, so she insisted that she take all the school supplies back home and either Orion could return her home, or she would be back to pick her up later.

As they entered the shop, a rush of cool air elicited a sigh of relief from the young girl. The heat outside was just unnecessary, but this was the relief she needed. “[Can I have the brownie a la mode, please?]” Sol had considered the waffle dish sundae, but something about ice cream melting into a warm brownie felt more appealing, even in the heat.

Looking around, she could see the heat had driven people in for relief, but there was still enough space for them to sit and enjoy their treats. “[I’m going to go save us a table before they get swooped up.]” Unless Orion asked her to stay by his side, she would disappear to an open table in the corner. She would sit with her back to the shop, leaving the one that overlooked it for her uncle. Whether this was on a whim or because she had observed something particular about her uncle would remain unsaid. Solène would patiently wait for him to acquire their treats and join her, with a question impatiently dancing on her tongue. She had to ask him at the right moment, but the swinging of her legs would be a familiar indicator that he was about to endure a questionnaire.
