Flourish and Blotts was thankfully the last stop on their shopping trip today. With it being dry and a hostile 84°F (29C) degree day, the last thing Sol and Astrid wanted to do was lug around books. Thankfully, she had thrown her hair up into a messy bun during her robe fitting, giving her some reprieve from the heat. And yet, despite that, she still felt like she was drowning in it. Walking past the bookstore on more than one occasion only made the excitement build each time they passed the windows lined with precariously stacked books. The sounds were also not something she would escape, as they could be heard up and down the street. She wanted desperately to search the tomes within, leading to her hand shaking slightly as she reached for the door.

As the door opened, a welcome rush of slightly cooler air hit her face, carrying with it the smells of the shop. Sol inhaled it deeply as Astrid grabbed the door, opening it all the way, allowing Sol free entrance into the bookstore. “Miss Solène, why don’t you go browse around while I collect the books on your list?” Sol nodded, only half hearing her governess while taking in the vast amount of books in the space. Her loose, black trousers swished softly as Sol set off to wander the towering shelves and narrow pathways, scanning over titles as she went.

She didn’t even know where to start until she came across a Defense Against the Dark Arts book that was very clearly beyond her level. For anyone who knew her, this would be of no surprise. She was constantly trying to get into her father's and uncle’s books, which she very much had no business reading. An excited smile spread across her lips because they weren’t here to stop her as she carefully slid the book from its place on the shelf. It opened easily into her hand, and she immediately started to devour its contents. She could be found engrossed in the book, lost to all her surroundings, her hand softly mimicking wand movements as if she were conducting an orchestra.

Benoit d'Estienne had never been Orion's pick for his sister. It wasn't that the man was cruel, it was that he had the extraordinary ability to appear absent while standing in a room full of people. His career always came first, then whatever scraps of time he had left in the day he would offer to his family.

The Frenchman thought Océane deserved better, but he had learned the hard way that telling a woman you think her husband is an idiot doesn't exactly produce a desired result. So, he kept his mouth shut and let his sister claim to be happy. Then Benoit became a widower and the girls still remained less of a priority, left into the care of nannies or whatever other caretakers his brother-in-law hired. So, when Benoit had approached Orion years earlier to propose his idea to move the girls to London so they could be closer to Hogwarts, he had told him to go for it. If Benoit was going to be an absent father, Orion could be an active uncle. It seemed simple enough at the time.

That was before he knew how dangerous Hogwarts was. He wasn't naive; he was aware that danger didn't announce itself with its wand drawn, but he hadn't expected to find it around every corner at a school for children. Even with the hag coven destroyed, the word 'safe' was optimistic... A word the professors told the children so they could sleep better at night.

It would seem this year he would take on another duty; protector. It was not a role he was familiar with, he was used to destroying. Hunting.

Orion had promised to meet his niece for ice cream, but he had arrived early and took an educated guess; Solène would have her nose stuck in a book. As the shop's door opened and the bell chimed to indicate his arrival, his sapphire eyes scanned the crowd. He found her pretty easily and watched his niece for a moment as she poked around the array of books, selecting a title that should be far beyond her grade level.

Merlin have mercy on him, she was too curious for her own good. A trait she shared with her mother. A fond smile crossed his face.

He took a step closer before speaking, his voice soft as to not interrupt the other customers, "[I thought you were here to purchase your schoolbooks, Little Star, not conduct unauthorized research into the dark arts.]"

Sol didn’t hear the bell of the door opening, didn’t hear the approaching footsteps, and barely noticed his presence until he spoke. If she had been a target, she would have been dead as a doornail. Situational awareness was truly something she needed to work on, but she was 11; what was coming to get her? The Boogeyman? Then again, Orion could be considered a Boogeyman of sorts, and he did, in fact, catch her red handed.

As his familiar voice found Sol’s ears, her eyes snapped forward to the bookshelf in front of her and her whole body tensed. Crap. He’s not supposed to be here yet. He was supposed to meet them at the ice cream shop after they were done shopping. How inconvenient, but still welcome. Solène gently closed the book, sliding it back into the bookshelf before turning toward her uncle with a sheepish smile.

“[Uncle Orion!]” Her soft, dry voice matched his volume to remain respectful, but her excitement was still clear. Sol was practically a carbon copy of Orion, looking more like his daughter than her own father’s. Benoit was a man who was never around, not even enough to escort his daughter school shopping. She despised him, truly, but no longer spoke of it, unlike her sister, who raged when he wasn't around. Instead, she treated him the same way she treated any of her governesses, something she secretly hoped bothered him. She was a child, and she deserved a real parent. Orion, of course, made up for it where he could, but even the eleven-year-old knew it should not be his responsibility.

“[Astrid is collecting my schoolbooks for me, and it can’t be too unauthorized if it’s in a public bookstore. I think you’re just being dramatic.]” Thinking she had just made a winning point Sol grinned flashing her teeth at him before, quite literally, wrapping her arms around him so tightly she thought she would crush him, or at least as much as a child could to a grown man. “[I’ve missed you. How have you been?]”

Orion's lips quirked into another small smile as he noticed his niece tense up. He wasn't usually the type to lecture children; a task he'd leave to her governess. However, only on a rare occasion when they did something stupid, like try to break into his office. A deep chuckle rumbled in his chest as he reached over to gently ruffle Sol's hair, almost undoing her messy bun. He tucked loose tendrils behind her ears and leave down to kiss the top of her head affectionately.

"[Better to find you with your nose in a book then midway through some Merlin forsaken curse. Although considering the family you hail from, I might need to keep a closer eye on you during Defence Against the Dark Arts.]" The Frenchman sounded amused more than anything, but in truth he was concerned about his niece's curious nature. She even looked more and more like her as the years passed. The Lécuyer genes were strong, though they had seemingly missed her younger sister.

He wheezed when Solène squeezed him, although he amped up his reaction as a joke, "[Take it easy on your old uncle, Star, I'm two years away from 40.]" His arms wrapped around the preteen, giving her a gentle squeeze. "[I've missed you too, kiddo.]"

With a grin he plucked the book she had been reading from the shelf and quickly rifled through the pages before deciding it seemed harmless enough. He tucked it beneath his arm. "[I'll buy it for you when Astrid isn't looking. Just don't go casting anything dangerous. Now, come along, troublemaker, I promised you ice cream and you're going to give Astrid a heart attack when she realizes you're out of sight.]"

Solène had been caught attempting to sneak into both her father’s and Orion’s offices on multiple occasions. Admittedly, after the second time Orion caught her there, there was something in his eyes that shook her to her core. He was not being scary, or even outwardly angry, beyond reiterating that it was far too dangerous for anyone other than him. There was something else she saw, and it was not something that her child brain could decipher, but she took it for what it was. A darker unspoken warning. Since then, she has never brought up his office again, but she would be a liar if she ever said she didn’t think about it all the time. Orion was a mystery. He was her uncle first and foremost, but he had secrets, and she was obsessed with knowing them. Something that would very likely get her into more trouble than she could imagine.

When Orion wheezed, she giggled. A truly rare sound from the eleven-year-old. “[You’re 38?! You’re practically stardust.]” Ah, to be a child who still thought barely middle-aged people were much older than they were. As her uncle looked at the book she had been reading, Sol took the moment to fix her messed-up hair and peek around for Astrid. A futile attempt considering she was much too small to see over and around all the books. That was when Orion said something that caught her off guard, causing her to exclaim slightly louder than she should. “[Really?!]” Her eyes went as wide as saucers. “[I promise! Thank you, thank you!]” Her voice lowered as she practically vibrated with excitement.

Astrid, having heard Solène’s raised voice, appeared almost out of thin air with an armful of books. “[Is everything- Oh! Sir Lécuyer. Are we running late? I’m so sorry. I’ve just finished collecting Miss Solène’s last schoolbook and am ready to check out.]” It was not lost on Astrid how happy her charge looked, and it brought a warm smile to her face. Sol always seemed to shine a little brighter when her uncle was around.

He let out a shallow breath that sounded half like a sigh and half like a laugh, "[38 is not that old, little star. Time can be cruel when you get older, and years start to feel more like months. Perhaps someday you will be 38 and your niece will call you stardust.]" He teased half heartedly. Although the thought of Solène being his age was jarring; he could have sworn she was a messy haired five year old just yesterday.

["Just remember, I'm trusting you with this knowledge."] His niece's curiousity was going to be the death of Orion; he could almost see it happening now. He still wasn't entirely sure how well he could protect her from the evils of Hogwarts, but he also knew that warning her to stay away from certain people, or families, would just make her more likely to seek them out. If he could keep her distracted with a 'forbidden' book at least she would be less likely to go looking for trouble on her own. ["Magic should only be used with the upmost care."]

He could practically hear his inner voice hissing at him for being a hypocrite.

["No need to worry."] He straightened his spine as Astrid appeared and waved away her concerns. ["I came early because I wanted a bit of extra time with my niece. I have a surprise planned for her after ice cream."]

The Frenchman wrapped his arm around Sol's shoulders to guide her towards the check out desk. ["Come, we'll purchase your books and head out."]
