100 DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Ornament Decorating

Today was September 16th, exactly 100 days from Christmas. The Great Hall was filled with festive cheer due to the occasion, with magical snow falling from the ceiling, yet never touching the ground. The wonderfully sweet smell of gingerbread wafted over from @Ebony Vetra's table, the sixth-year Ravenclaw prefect responsible for the cookie decorating and hot cocoa. On the other side of the room, the Hufflepuff prefect @Jrue Peterson was snipping away at different pieces of colored paper, preparing for the card making that will be taking place. In the center was a large Christmas tree, currently only decorated with colorful strings and ribbons. However, things should hopefully change by the end of the afternoon, as in front of the tree was a table with numerous crafting supplies.
Skylar stands dutifully by the table, her hands fidgeting as she awaits for the arrival of students. Saying that the young girl was nervous would be the understatement of the century. Prefect. The title still felt odd to the Gryffindor, as she never thought she would be given such a responsibility. Yet here she is, preparing her station for ornament decorating. It had barely been half a month and she was already tasked with running an event. Thankfully, she gets to do it with two other prefects, Ebony and Jrue, who have been a great help to her as she got used to her duties.
Taking a deep breath, Skylar puts on her usual cheerful smile as students begin to roll in. A lot of effort went into planning this event, so she really hopes that other students will find it enjoyable. As students began gathering around her table, she offers the crowd a bright smile and stands on top of the table. "Hello, everyone! Some of you may know me, but most of you may not. I am Skylar Blue, one of the Gryffindor prefects, and I am here to help you guys with the Christmas Ornament Decorating!"
Taking out one of the blank ornaments, Skylar holds it up for the crowd to see. "This right here is what you all will be unleashing your creativity on. There are several shapes and sizes to choose from, just grab it from the boxes here." She states as she gestures to the rows of boxes by the table. "The plain, white surface of the plastic allows you to design it however you would like! Nothing inappropriate, of course. You can write your name, make a sweet note, or even draw a little doodle." Glitter, ink, and various pots of paint were laid out on the table, inviting students to use them for their creations. Hopping off the table, Skylar walks over the the large Christmas tree. She takes out a pre-made ornament, showing it to the crowd.
"After you are done, you will tie a string on your ornament so that it can be hanged. You can then hand it over to me and I will levitate it onto the tree." To demonstrate, she pulls out her wand and points it at the pre-made ornament. The blue-haired girl had spent a long time practicing for this occasion, as it would be terribly embarrassing if she dropped it on someone. She would never hear the end of it and it would be the end of her very short time as a prefect.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
With that, the ornament floats up and up and hangs on one of the branches. Skylar smiles as she turns back to the crowd, giving them a joking bow. "And that, folks, is how it is done! What are you waiting for? Go and make some ornaments. I want this tree full and dazzling by the end of the afternoon! Oh, and make sure to say hello to Santa Lear over here."
The girl grins impishly as she directs the students to the cardboard cut-out of their headmaster... in a Santa costume. "Getting into the festive spirit yet, Headmaster Lear?" As expected, the cardboard Lear gave no response. Under the scrutinizing gaze of Lear's hand-drawn eyes, Skylar begins walking around the tables to see if anyone needed help.

Xio was still feeling the creative itch a little after she finished her card designs, she wanted to do more! And lo' and behold, the clinking and tinking of plastic ornaments being handled and designed by staff and students immediately caught her attention.
She learned her lesson with the card decorating station and decided to pour all her creative energy into the one ornament. She took a look at the available shapes for the ornaments and found herself picking a hollowed out transparent star shape.
After picking out her shape, she gathered a few vials of glitter of various colors, a sheet of paper, and a little bit of water. Once seated, she meticulously sorted the glitter into various piles all in differentiating amounts, then suddenly scooped all of the piles onto the paper, mixing them, then using it to funnel the glitter into the ornament. A little under half of the ornament was filled with the sparkly concoction mess, then she poured just enough water so that the glitter would shimmer and swirl when shaken.
The concept seemed simple, borderline lazy, to Xio, but at the same time she also enjoyed how it made her felt. She gave it a few shakes and stared in amazement at each of the swirls and twists the glitter floated into. Once she was satisfied, she offers her ornament (although slightly damp) to @Skylar Blue with a triumph smile.
"Please place low on the tree so other students can shake it if they want to, thank you!"

After finishing the cards, Bella Light was excited to see what other crafts she could make. She wondered towards a huge Christmas tree, probably more than three times bigger than the ones she had at home.
A girl with blue hair was standing near the Christmas tree, introducing herself as @Skylar Blue, who is one of the Prefects at Hogwarts. Skylar mentioned that her station was an ornament making one, and Bella’s head shot up at those words.
Bella’s family had a specific tradition every Christmas — to make an ornament to put on the tree. These ornaments stay on the tree, and every year, more ornaments are added. This was a way to show memories and the years as they pass by. Bella was determined to make one worthy of her year at Hogwarts.
Rushing over to the station, she picked out a snow-globe shaped ornament. She cracked the ornament open (it was hollowed out) and filled it with a figurine of Santa, white glitter for snow, blue glitter (for her family colors), and green paper (for her Slytherin house colors). Of course, nobody else would ever know what the colors meant, but to Bella, they each represented something abut her.
Using a green marker, she wrote the words Merry Christmas! Year of 2026! on the ornament and shook it to admire her work.
When she deemed that the ornament was done and good enough, she walked over to Skylar with a smile.
“Hi, Skylar! I’m done with my ornament! Can you please place it high, but not too high that nobody could reach it? Thank you!”
She gave Skylar the ornament and turned around, wondering if there was any more crafts and fun events she could do that festive night.

With a specific idea in mind, Jessica went directly to the ornament-making station to make a small snow globe that would hang from the Christmas tree.
She took a clear, round plastic ornament and held it in the light. She collected some artificial snow, small decorative flakes and a few little cartoon figurines, then carefully placed the figures inside, taking great care to put them in position so that they are visible properly.
"Okay, you go there and stay exactly where you are".
To create a small winter scene she placed artificial snow around them and then tilted the ornament to watch the flakes move about the figures. She gently shook it and smiled as the flakes floated around the cartoon figures.
“This is cute!”
Once she had secured all the items properly and cleaned the surface, she proudly held it out. "I will put it at a noticeable position on the tree where everyone can see it and give it a shake to enjoy the snowflakes rumbling around".

Christmas ornaments Errand:
The 16th of September brought to her surprise, a crafting event. She loved crafting, and in her family it was a part of daily life. Her hippie mother despised bought or, as she called it, ‘mainstream’ decoration. Everything that decorated their small but cosy cottage was homemade or home-grown. Her father, the family's herbologist, also took his stand. Everyone participated and brought their own twist to the decoration. So he could hang some of his less dangerous plants. He had a whole spiel about every plant and its characteristics, but she would spare herself the details now. Nobody needed to know about the poison of mistletoe at this time of the school year, or the few friends she had tried to make would run and scream for the hills.
She had a couple of ideas for Christmas bulbs and hoped it would be okay to make multiple. She started with the one she deemed the most amusing. She planned to make a little nod to the Muggle world and its all-encompassing fairytales. Her favourite fairytale was that of a princess called snowwhite. She loved how the story could make you believe in ‘true love's kiss’ and how friendships could lead you through the darkest times of your life.
Her hand had grabbed decoration supplies in a hurry, so she probably needed to double back later.
Now her space was full of organised chaos. She started with lining the inside of her bauble with glue to adhere her glitter. Then she poured an even amount of the aforementioned red glitter and began to shake it fiercely. Almost elbowing her neighbour in enthusiasm. After a quick apology, she continued her crafting.
First, she drew her idea onto the white glitter paper. She had grabbed a thicker sort of paper from the supplies, and it would glimmer marvellously underneath the Great Hall lighting.
Her idea was to create the iconic ‘poison apple’ from her favourite childhood fairytale. The red apple part, she already had down, with the red glitter inside. Next, she carefully glued on the thick white paper, creating a nice flow into the design. It also gave it the appearance of the presumed poison dripping down.
The result was very striking. A red apple with white glazing, and a red ribbon to hang onto the Christmas tree.
Her other idea was a more family-oriented craft. She wanted to paint her family as snowmen. Each little snowmen would resemble her family. One with a thick moustache, a happy grin and a flannel shirt. For her mother, she would paint a snowman with lots of flowers in her hair and a blob of paint on her face. Then a smaller snowman resembling her. A thick hat on its head and multiple ribbons circulating its body.
Her tongue stuck out in concentration, she wanted it just right. She loved how it turned out. Every snowman embodied the person just right. She hoped that she could have the bauble back one day and show her family. In the muggle world. It was as simple as a single click. Smartphones were magical in their own way.
After clearing her desk and saying goodbye to her deskmates, she went to stand in line. She twisted the ribbons in her hand. Would everyone like it? She hoped so. It would be fun if it was in sight of her fellow students.
After the prefect cast the perfectly executed ‘Wingardium Leviosa’ spell, her ornaments hung beautifully on the tree. Amalia loved how they glittered in the light.
Amalia stood there in the Great Hall, only 16 days into her first year. Far away from her parents, but surrounded by friends and so much magic. She looked around at all the students already participating. This was how a community felt. Everyone working towards the same goal.
Making christmas perfect, together.

The sweet scent of hot cocoa and gingerbread was sickening, though fainter at the “ornament decorating” table but its absence was still much preferred. Mrs. Woodrow adored sweets. "Adored" would be a sizeable exaggeration if it were anyone except Mrs. Woodrow. At heart, the greatest act of kindness in her capabilities was to tolerate something.
Back to the topic of ornaments. How come Atlas was staring at a blank ornament instead of decorating delicious cookies and snacking on hot cocoa? Why was here when he could be crafting a heartfelt message for his Ma in the form of a Christmas card? Wouldn't that just be the sweetest thing ever? What purpose did ornaments serve beyond aesthetics?
The first question was already answered; he despised sweet things. Candies, apple pie, gingerbread... not for him. For the second question, Atlas didn't have a "Ma". He had Mrs. Woodrow, and that was very far from a mom. He'd bestowed her the formal title of "mother" years ago, but she was always more deserving of "crazy-woman-who-thinks-I-am-a-disease". As for the third question, the answer was yes. It would, in fact, be the sweetest thing ever. It was stated once and it'll be stated again: Atlas despised sweet things.
Now the last question had no answer. The young boy didn't know, nor did he care to ponder about it long enough and come up with one. What was for sure was that the other tables had repulsed him, leaving only one acceptable option.
Atlas reached a hand into the row of boxes without looking. The entire hall was bedecked with Christmas cheer. Evergreen wreaths full of scarlet berries and gold ornaments hung on every door, while candles and candy canes decorated the tables, each of which were lined with thick red ribbons and empty stockings. The room echoed of laughter and cheer from children excitedly crafting their cookies, cards, and ornaments. Atlas felt out of place.
The ornament he had grabbed was round and fit neatly into the palm of his hand. For a moment, he relished the feel, fingers running down the smooth plastic. Mrs. Woodrow didn't like Christmas. Therefore, it was only typical of Mrs. Woodrow to not celebrate it. Hanging up ornaments on an early December morning was an experience Atlas never got, nor did he ever receive a present. By that he meant a meaningful present. The boy had kept a collection of cheap cards oh-so-kindly given to him by his mother on Christmases and birthdays until one unfortunate afternoon in mid-September, exactly a year ago from now. She had been of exceptional annoyance, absolutely furious over a scraped knee and an unfinished dinner. Atlas piled every one of his neglected cards into the trash. When he saw that Mrs. Woodrow was completely apathetic toward the situation; it couldn't help but sting a little. More than a little.
Before he knew it, a thick layer of Christmas green had been slathered all over his ornament. Atlas decided the color was too bright and merry for his taste, so a light coat of brown was added. The end result looked like vomit. A ball of vomit which Atlas would say resembled his mother's eyeball, but that would be offensive to vomit.
In hopes of making his ornament more presentable, he added a cluster of small white polkadots, which weren't really white because the layers of brown and green had not yet fully dried, giving each dot yellow-ish tints of varying degrees. It was only fair for him to deem the dots ivory colored after such an artistic failure. Other issues would be how they were quite unevenly spaced out and not really dots; deformed blobs would be a better classification. Perhaps he could turn them into roses...
That would be perfect.
Atlas wasn't great with a brush, but one could tell there were white (or ivory) flowers of some sort. He'd also successfully scouted the table for a deep green that complemented the backdrop perfectly and used it for the vase. As for the finishing touch, he tossed on some white glitter to really make his roses shine.
Though his ornament may not reflect the typical Christmas spirit, it definitely reflected his. Ten years of waking up every December morning to see nothing but his mother's vase of fake white roses on the coffee table, whereas other children were greeted with a huge, glowing Christmas tree; he was painting from his experiences after all.

I observed the Great Hall, enjoying this Christmas atmosphere, that was which enveloped it. My cat Isida was rubbing against my legs. I smelled the scent of ginger and cinnamon flying in the air, turning into little snowflakes and disappearing in the ceiling. My gaze slid across the Hall, where people were laughing, talking and making different Christmas things, despite the fact that there were still a full 100 days until Christmas. Or just a 100 days?
My cat meowed loudly. I lowered my gaze to see that she is looking in turn at me and back at one of the tables, as if she wants to show me something. I nodded and followed my cat. Suddenly, I found myself in a centre of the whole thing. While we were pushing our way through the crowd, people surrounded us, they were happy and relaxed, enjoying the life. I was feeling as if the sound of my phone stopped being muted and now working at full power.
Isida lead me to an ornament decorating table. It had so much different wonderful stuff. Personally, I wanted to use every piece of it. I took some sparkles, star-shaped cut-outs and some golden-bronze confetti. When I filled my Christmas tree bauble with all this stuff, I took a small piece of paper and wrote with accurate calligraphic handwriting "Believe in your dreams and they'll come true". After that I went to the girl, who was levitating different ornaments on the Christmas tree and handed her ornament. She took it carefully and professionally lifted it high up to the tree. I thanked her and went back to the Ornament Decorating Table to find Isida, who was playing with the ribbons. "Come here my little princess," - I called her and raised her up. Isida purred, with one's nose buried into my scarf.
I laughed as I held my beloved cat, savouring the wonderful festive atmosphere. And even though the holiday was still a 100 days away—who cared? Above me, my Christmas ornament shimmered, and snowflakes drifted down from the ceiling.

| xxxxx | Wednesdays, as far as the days of the week went for Kahira's schedule, weren't necessarily terrible. Potions class was her favourite of the week, and she didn't have to deal with Herbology, one of her least favourites - so, all in all, a decent day. Plus, there was a short break in the late morning before the lunch hour; maybe if she went early to the Great Hall, she could snatch food and leave before anyone noticed at which House table she had been forced to sit. This Hufflepuff thing was, truly, getting very annoying; only about two weeks (and change) had passed since the Sorting Ceremony, and Kahira was growing more desperate to get into the House of her dreams every day. The fewer people who met her as a (gag) Hufflepuff, the better. She could truly begin to network once she donned the silver and green she so deserved. Unfortunately, it seemed as though today the refuge of a quiet Great Hall before lunchtime had been ravaged and overtaken by sweet-smelling squalor. Kahira wrinkled her nose upon approach, certain that the sugary, gingery scent in the air was a figment of her imagination; unfortunately, opening the heavy wooden doors proved otherwise. The redhead blinked angry dark eyes at the holiday-coded scene before her, intaking the falling snow and decorated pine trees much as one would look at the destruction of one's favourite toy. With fury, and frustration, and disgust. She made her way to where she usually sat to eat, only to find the area overtaken by crafting supplies that positively reeked of Muggles: strings and glitter and paint, and balls of something white that a Gryffindor prefect nearby was calling plass-tick. Gag. With the tip of her elderwood wand, the first-year poked one of the balls as she gingerly lowered herself down to sit upon the bench, lest someone have spilled any of the paint onto her seat; at least she hadn't come to her seat to find the biscuits and icing atop the table, for she'd surely have vomited from the sickeningly sugary smell. Huffing a frustrated sigh, she glanced around and mumbled something under her breath about 'ridiculous traditions'. Would they have any actual food here, or would she be forced to decorate a stupid ornament simply to escape? |

Christmas was almost a hundred days away and Angel adored it, especially the bright colors she loved it she really did, the traditions and oh the parties that were grand were her forte and she would never get tired of it. In Caerphilly she recalled the countless times she enjoyed seeing Mapleridge bustling with christmas ornaments and audible discussions whilst the chefs and waiters bellow and rush and prance along the corridors to craft dishes and deliver them seamlessly all at the same time. Homesickness never gets spoiled as she remembered always having that feeling of longing especially for home.
