4th September 2026
It was the end of the first week of classes at Koldovstoretz, a beautiful sunny afternoon on the northeast corner of campus, just past the library yurt. Golden rays of the late-summer sun shimmered down on a cluster of green-clad children in the open plain, led to the remote area of the school grounds by one tall, blonde, and mostly imposing figure (as well as the (dNPC) Vedma(k) of Plant Care). The headmaster and his herbological underling had, of course, a very important reason for kidnapping all of the youths to this part of Koldovstoretz's not-yet-snowy estate. All of the first-year students had been gathered here today, as opposed to their regular post-lunch courses, for perhaps the most important ceremony of their young student careers: the Tree Planting.
Trees had always been of more importance to Koldovstoretz than to any of the other Eleven Schools worldwide. According to their (perhaps not-so-long, but definitively storied) history, Russian wix had come to ride on fully grown, uprooted timbers as opposed to the traditionally trimmed-down and sleeker broomstick, so that they would not be easily found if they had to leave their sporting goods behind for a sudden fleeing of an area. The tradition had stuck, and now each student on campus could boast their very own tree, which was a part of their yearly examinations; a student who could not care for their personal plant was a student who could potentially not be trusted to move on to their next year of schooling. As graduating seventh-years, these children would eventually uproot their tree and charm it to fly... but they had to plant it first.
Just past the library yurt, Director Vorozheykin had set up what was essentially a large gardening station. A long, polished wooden table glistened under the warm sunlight, set with easily dozens of small saplings in tiny pots of varying colours and sizes; each type of pot boasted a different species of baby tree, anything that would survive in the wintrier cold of Russia's end-of-year climate, from conifers such as pine and larch to deciduous species like aspen and oak. A list of the available species was pinned to the far side of the table, each with a different description; keen-eyed youths, or elder students, would note that the potential options were also all trees from which wands could be made:

In addition to the saplings, students could also find a pile of small gardening tools nearby, as well as giant sacks of dragon dung propped up against the only pre-standing tree in the vicinity... everything they would need to choose a location in the nearby field for their tree and plant it with all the love and care it deserved. (Out-of-Character Note: If you would like to mention other supplies being provided, go ahead.) Eligible students would be called, one by one in a random order, up to the table to make their choice. Aulis Vorozheykin, the scarlet-clad Director of Studies and a prominent Seer (as far as anyone knew), stood behind the table and greeted each student with a hello, a congratulations, and a dramatic flourish of his hand, inviting them to choose their sapling and move along.
Out of Character Note: This is a RPG topic where all students are welcome to post. Only first-year students may RP as planting a tree, as elder students would have had the opportunity to plant their trees during their respective first years at Hogwarts. If you are not a first-year, however, you are welcome to assist first-years with planting theirs, reminisce about your own planting (since this is the first tree-planting event), or simply hang out.
Please keep in mind that, though the Tree Planting thread will remain open all year, it takes place canonically on 4 September of 2026. "First-years" are those who started in the 2026-2027 school year, no matter when they officially made their iNPC.
All RPG rules apply. Word count per post is 200 words of your own work, not including quotes, OOC chat or other people's words. Any flood-type (posts under 200 words) of message will be deleted after a warning owl is sent. If you are having a hard time meeting the 200 word count expectation try to be descriptive:
- If you are a first-year, what tree did you choose and why?
What do you imagine your tree will be like when you graduate? Are you excited to perform this ritual or not?
- Or, if you are an elder observer: Help out a younger student, or reminisce upon your own tree-planting. You can imagine that previous years looked exactly like this one, just in a different part of campus.
What tree did you choose and why?
Very minor god-modding is allowed here because there are lots of you and only one of me. Please be respectful of this fact and keep most of your post about you. You know that Director Vorozheykin is handing out the tree saplings at the table along with the dNPC (anonymous, non-specific) Vedma(k) of Plant Care. He would not have an individual conversation with you other than to perhaps say congratulations when you choose your sapling and hand it to you. Please make sure that you respect the Koldovstoretz lore in your RP.
If you have any questions, please send me an owl. Code credit to @Solomon Lear.

Watching the new first years plant the trees just as he himself had done last year.... it stirred something within him. Happiness perhaps? He loved seeing nature being cared for by people.
His eyes glanced over to the direction of last year's grove where his own tree was planted. He had been meticulous with caring for the sapling and it was growing beautifully. A rare smile graced his face as he remembered his own planting ceremony.
He had still been trying to figure out his way around the school when his own tree planting ceremony had occurred. Seeing the numerous people watching him and the other first years back then had made him rather wary. He didn't like having so many eyes on him but the fact he was soon going to plant a tree overrode his discomfort. When he had to pick his sapling, it had taken him quite a bit to decided which one he wanted to plant. In the end, he had picked a chestnut sapling, the same wood type as his wand. Since his wand had chosen him, he figured that he would also have a similar connection with the same wood type over any of the others.
Perhaps another reason he had chosen the chestnut sapling though was because those same trees grew in the backyard of his family home back in France. They were rather common around the area and he used to hang around them a lot when he would sit outside at night with the owls and other animals.
Raphael snapped out of his reminiscence and noticed a first year struggling with their sapling. Before he could think twice, he felt himself moving over to the student. He paused. Why did he go forward to help? Maybe cause he didn't want to see the sapling planted incorrectly. He sighed. Now wasn't the time to question his own actions. He was already in front of the student. He knelt down and signed slowly, Let me help. They reminded him of his own younger siblings, perhaps that's why he felt compelled to help them out. It was the responsibility he felt being an older sibling. Except it was towards strangers younger than him. He just let his thoughts fade and focused entirely on helping the student plant the sapling properly.
