Those who worked in the Department of Mysteries were often known as Unspeakable’s. This was because they worked with love, space, thought, time, death, and other areas that many cannot quite comprehend. For tonight’s activity for this particular Department, the planning committee had thought of a very specific task.

Students may have already asked themselves; „What happens after death?”, „Can time truly be controlled?”, „What exists beyond the stars?”, „What makes a thought a thought?”, „Why do people love?” Or „Can the future truly be known?”

And they would have all already went in a good direction of what this Department was actually about.

For their task tonight, members would be granted temporary access to a small collection of research books written by official authors. These books weren’t technically intended for school use, but accessible in any other shop, such as Flourish and Blotts.

In the late afternoon hours, Students could gather in a set up space on the campgrounds. Tables, benches, couches, chairs, snacks and drinks had been arranged close to the campfire area. Candles stood on the tables and writing material was provided. Each Department member would receive a small black envelope sealed with silver wax.

Inside was a single piece of parchment:
Unspeakable Research Assignment

You have been granted two hours to think and write about the following six questions.
I. Time; If you could change one moment in your past, should you?
II. Space; What exists beyond, that you cannot see?
III. Thought; Is any thought truly original?
IV. Love; What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic?
V. Death; What makes something truly gone?
VI. Prophecy; If you knew your future, would you still choose it?
There were no further instructions given, just to think of what those question meant and what one could think of. Discussions were encouraged but not necessary.

𝕸aybe this wasn't such a good idea. You know, wearing parts of the school uniform to give off the impression that he's treating this event very seriously. At least I'm not wearing the robes or the vest, Robin reassured himself. Those are the items that can really increase your body temperature, built for cold Scottish winters. The school shirt and pants themselves are actually quite breathable, that's how the boy persuaded himself to wear them in the first place.

The profession of "Unspeakable" had intrigued Robin since he first heard of the word. After developing a passion for research himself, the boy visualized a clear future for himself—graduate Hogwarts with an above-satisfactory grade, go through graduate education, become a researcher, then eventually apply to become an Unspeakable once he's sure he has something to offer the secretive academia network. Learning more about the Department of Mysteries was the single aspect of this summer camp he looked forward to. None of his immediate family worked in those types of research, and the only ones who might—those in the Nightingale family—were blocked by his mother's worries. Worries that Robin can't justify however closely he analyzed the situation. Sure, Myrcelle thinks her family is suffocating, but Robin hadn't exactly been subtle about his interest in academics. She can tell, right? That I would like to connect with her side of the family? I know almost all of them are researchers, there's a high chance that someone is an Unspeakable! Robin caught himself overthinking and took a deep breath. If his mother doesn't allow him to access House Nightingale's knowledge, he'll just have to build his own library, which was equally appealing to say the least.

As Robin arrived at the table hosting his department's activity, he straightened his clothes even though there weren't any wrinkles to begin with. Everyone here is interested in mysteries, anyone here can be his future colleague, boss, even. That thought was at the same time nerve-wracking and exciting. The boy took a seat playing an album of moving pictures in his head, some with him confidently presenting at a conference, others him debating interesting topics with his associates, and many more futures to look forward to. He can feel his heart pounding, and every note in that rhythm contributes to the ceremonial drumbeat announcing his progress on this pre-destined yet self-actualizing journey.

Robin slid into a bench neighboring the main table in the area. He usually didn't like sitting with a big group of people when alternatives were provided, but having a table is just easier for note-taking and all the research publications were stacked here. The boy breathed in the air, the stimulating aroma of paper, parchment, and various drinks blended well with the relaxation wild herbs provided. This isn't a time for commenting on the environment though, and the young Ravenclaw quickly transitioned into a zone of pure focus.

He had already read the contents of the black envelope he received upon entry. Questions, many philosophical in nature that he can already think of numerous answers to share. Still, the even dedicated some time for personal research, and he would much rather see if there's anything he hadn't read yet in those books. Robin poured himself a cup of unsweetened black tea and started looking through the titles, eyes set on one discussing the contrasting effects of love and apathy on one's abilities. Works involving the discussion of indifference would always be where his gaze is drawn first. His cat's name is Meursault, and that alone sends a message to whoever knows about a certain muggle novella. Robin didn't bring the feline menace with him tonight just in case he goes on a rampage and ruins the books or other people's times. The young tom is currently—or rather, should be—safely huddled in the cabin with food prepared in an accessible spot for him to nibble on.

With Love and Apathy: Stimulants or Inhibitors in one hand and his tea-filled cup in the other, Robin flipped through the pages with a quiet eagerness about him. His expression, as always, not giving away any information aside from his undivided focus. Even someone with the dullest of intuitions can tell that this is a boy with a goal. A young boy who seemed to have already predicted his ultimate achievement in life.

His eyes, however, shine with a glint of genuine fascination only found on a child who believes he can always learn something new. A humble yet fierce appreciation for all knowledge.

“One always has exaggerated ideas about what one doesn't know.” - Albert Camus

Errand Mysteries
When Jeremy had agreed to come to summer camp, the chance to get to be part of the ‘department of mysteries’ (even the make-believe kind) was part of the reason why. Sure, it wasn't real, but who cared? There was no job cooler than being in the department of mysteries, because their job was so mysterious, nobody even knew what they did. A job where nobody knew what you did was obviously the coolest job, because you could imagine whatever you wanted, and it could possibly be true.

So far, they hadn't really done anything very mysterious, but there had been a lot of books, ones Jeremy had never read before, and he had already learned about three things he was certain his mum didn't want him to know. So all in all, it had been a good summer.

But when he heard there was going to be a summer event just for their cabin? Even though he knew that it was probably just going to be some kind of game, and that they'd never let them REALLY know any Unspeakable secrets, he'd barely been able to sleep the night before.

When the afternoon came, Jeremy hurried down to the campgrounds, ready to find out what their secret task was. (He walked quickly, as he'd heard rumors that Magical Law Enforcement were patrolling the camp, and the last thing in the world he wanted to do was to run into @Kahira Valerian with a ‘badge’).

As he arrived, Jeremy found himself gravitating towards those that were in his cabin - taking a seat beside them. He didn’t really know why. He didn’t know if he would call them 'friends' yet, but they were people he knew. And that counted for something.

Unfortunately, what happened next was a series of disappointments.

First of all, he had eagerly tried to pore through the books they'd been given, only to find out that this wasn't REALLY very secret books at all. It wasn't that they weren't interesting...it was just that they were the kind of interesting he had already seen before. That MIGHT have been fine, if it wasn't for the secret envelopes.

Of course when he'd been given a secret black envelope, he'd been elated. It seemed they really WERE going to learn some kind of secret nobody else got to - maybe they'd each get their own one - just ONE cool fact that nobody else know, and be sworn to magical secrecy, being told they'd drop dead if they even told one of their cabin-mates.

Instead, what they got was homework.

Jeremy squinted. This wasn’t fair. How come the magical law enforcement cabin got to boss everybody around, and all they got were questions?

The second disappointment was that they weren’t even HARD questions. Anybody could answer these, you barely needed to research them at all. If they had to answer things, he at least wanted it to be the kind of things that only he could answer. Couldn't it at least be good homework?

Still, he did have to take it a LITTLE seriously. He couldn’t afford to get them wrong. It probably wasn’t true, he knew it wasn’t, but what if the kid who got the most answers right got the REAL prize? The REAL envelope with the REAL secrets inside? Just in case, he had to try.

So Jeremy hunched over his parchment by his cabin-mates and began to take the easy quiz. “If you could change one moment in your past, should you? he read out loud. "…Well sure, if it was really bad." Sure, he knew it might change things for the worse, or erase stuff that happened after, but there were just some things you couldn't imagine being worse. And so he continued to read through the questions, writing down his answers as he went. He didn't really need to think too hard, most of the answers were obvious (and if there was any doubt that he thought so, his tone sure gave it away).
"What exists beyond, that you cannot see?
'Probably just more space'.
Is any thought truly original?
'Well, yeah, because nobody’s me, and nobody else thought it'. That one’s obvious.
What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic? 'Because love IS magic'.
What makes something truly gone? 'When you forget it ever existed'.
If you knew the future, would you still choose it?”

Jeremy thought about that for a second, before scrawling down and mumbling his answer. “Only if it was good. If it was bad, I wouldn't choose it.”

That was it? Too easy. He didn't get why philosophers made this stuff sound hard. He heard they spent years on this kind of stuff, and he had solved it in about thirty seconds.

____Her initial reason as to why she chose Mysteries Department was because she naturally wanted to know what lied into those mysteries they talking about. How depth is it? What kind of secrecy they trying so hard to kept under their sleeve? Millie just want to know it. And now, in this first job she need to do with them, the things she had anticipated it that she (and another students who also chose this department) was given a privileges to their collection books, alongside with the assignment too.
____Millie took the sealed, black envelope in one hand and a little light snack in another hand, then she head toward the coziest spot she could find. She munched her snack mindlessly as she tore the envelope and read the scribble written on the letter of her task for today.

If you could change one moment in your past, should you?

____Hm. So here she must believed if there's a moment we can turn back time? While she rummaged the pile of books provided, Millie thought that the time is only moving straight ahead with no chance to go back. That's the reason there's a word of a 'regret'. The reason people must use the time wisely since you only live once. Given a chance to fixed what was just happened, even if it really ended pretty bad, was just opening more change to let the reckless mind to not learnt their lesson.

What exists beyond, that you cannot see?

____Huh. This one is too general. What it meant in the first place anyway? Supernatural world? Or simply places she just never been before? After all, Millie never believe anything she never seen nor claimed to be legitimately proofed before. Although there were vary medias and word of mouths talking about certain topics, if she think it's unbelievable or not included with accurate proof, Millie won't believe it unless she saw it herself with her own eyes.

Is any thought truly original?

____The girl sighed. Seems it started to be a little philosophical. No, she wrote her answer on the parchment. No matter someone stubbornly thought and claimed that their own thought is original, it's always had been influenced by others beforehand, without they're realizing it. Either incited by their parents ever since before they could even think by their own mind or maybe just random opinion they seemed fit as their own vision and become one with their own.

What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic?

____What kind of love this was meant to begin with, she wondered. She never feel nor experience once romantically so she tried to think of her family. What kind? Are the kind with how her Pa and Ma always said they loved her included? Then again, what sort of act of love that could rivals magic? Millie pondered it for a long moment, munching her remaining snack, as she finally straighten her back and write her answer on the paper. Because love can be or mean as a life and/or death for certain people.

What makes something truly gone?

____It's a serious and sensitive matter when you talking about death. When she think about it, people hardly forgotten of their loved one's departure. They still mourning even though it's not actually shown on the surface. There's always a space as a reminder: name, heritage, or just memory. So then, maybe there's no more spot when the passing one had nothing to remember about, or worse there's no more people—or at the very least one person—they can be remembered as.

If you knew your future, would you still choose it?

____Practically, Millie tends to go on the simplest way of life. But if she was given the spoiler of her future, she rather closed her ears so no voice can be heard. Or if that's too late, she prefers to choose another unrevealed one instead. As she likes to know whatever mysteries lied on her life, she won't give in that easily. Where's the challenge? She can be just lazying around if she already knew what she will become. It just the same feeling as she hates people who ignorantly gave a spoiler of the book she was about to read.

The raven haired lass knew why or at least had an assumption why she had chose the Mysteries Department, was it because of the suspense or the game of chasing clues? That in itself was a mystery to her own mind. Those who had a keen interest in mysteries usually had a sense of psyche that made them understand or engrossed in such studies of life and magic, those who deal with such affairs were called “Unspeakables” that was what she could remember back in the school’s library concerning wizarding jobs.

Reading many novels and books from libraries back at Caerphilly, she always adored such topics regarding shrouded mysteries and prophesies usually fantasy and mystery genres. But she had an inference that this type of mystery would need her to think much deeper into her mind. Often times you would be having a commitment to be a philosopher like Socrates to construe and comprehend these type of questions. Yes she was correct, the following questions were deep and often sensitive which was a given, however the entire ordeal was ephemeral for she passed through with it easily.

Her flared jeans and white laced fitted cardigan, and red plaided shirt along with her rouge ballet flats pivoted towards the boy she was acquaintance with.

“How are you responding with the concepts?” she made an inquiry directly

𝕽obin was sucked out of his little bubble by the girl's voice. He did not immediately recognize it, so they must not be too familiar with each other, but he thought he heard it somewhere. The boy looked sideways and realized that he was facing someone he first met under . . . unusual circumstances. An experiment by a senior student, at the time about two years older, that tested their self-control under influence of a sedative. Robin shuddered thinking about it. This girl in front of him was a fellow participant, Angel Dayes, he came to know her as. The pale girl was quite pretty, but Robin couldn't tell if he was supposed to feel pleased or unsettled when she addressed him directly.

Robin blinked once as he was still processing Angel's question. The concepts . . . right, the questions we were given. He slid the parchment out from underneath the book he was reading and read its contents again.

"I've had my own answers since quite some time before this activity," he gestured towards the book, "I just wanted to see if there's anything else I can learn before offering my opinions to other people." A slight head shake announced that he felt like nothing new entered his brain. The works selected by the organizers of this camp were quite basic in their theories. They contained articles readily available to anyone at common magical bookstores, after all. Robin couldn't blame anyone, since it was unreasonable for him to assume they'd be able to access secretive mysteries even if it was just for a limited amount of time.

Steering his head back to the questions, Robin pointed at the first one, then the next ones as he made his way down. "I think the wording of 'should you' is pretty unique. Most people ask 'would you,' instead this question focuses on the ethics, it seems. I cannot speak for anyone else, but for me, changing pre-written pathways are too risky. The present I am now familiar with would become a stranger, and that creates too much room for uncontrollable variables. In short, no. The second question is quite straightforward. For example, we know ghosts exist but sometimes they disappear. Therefore, they exist beyond what we can see. Many other things too, whether because they're too far into the galaxy or because they simply don't show themselves. As for original thought, sadly, it doesn't exist. Every thought is shaped by your memories, education, values, and many more. When you think you think in a language, and that language itself isn't original. How can your thought be if the building block that helped you conceive it was made by someone in the ancient past and taught to you when you were a kid? The next question . . ." Robin finally stopped his overflowing arguments as his finger moved to this particular topic. His face remained flat, but his brows furrowed like he couldn't understand English anymore. "I've heard stories, real ones, about love overpowering magic. I've read some articles about this too, they mainly argue that love itself is a form of magic, the most primal and powerful one at that. I don't have an answer to why love is so powerful though, logically it should hinder you and decrease your objectivity in certain situations." The boy sighed and moved on, not wanting to dwell on his lack of an explanation. "Depends one what 'gone' means. If the prompt was 'what makes something truly dead,' I'd say physical death itself. In this case, however, the loss of records is probably what makes something 'gone.' When there is no longer evidence of your existence, it would not be possible for anyone to rediscover your memory. Lastly, prophecy. Well, I personally think future is inevitable. That's the point of prophecies, right? Prophecies about yourself, I mean. The point isn't to choose anything, it is just to take a peek at what will happen, and either boost your confidence or shatter your unrealistic hope before you ultimately find out your efforts were in vain. So no, you don't 'choose' your future, you choose the path that leads to it."

Robin took a sip of his tea and licked his lips. That was a lot. He might have said too much, maybe he was even a bit rude, not giving Angel a chance to speak aside from occasional short comments or reactions. He adjusted his glasses out of embarrassment and looked at her for a second before gazing back down at the parchment.

"What do you think?" He decided to throw out the invitation proactively, "Especially about the love and magic thing, I would like some insight. Of course, other topics are great too."

It was truly funny, realising how much she fit the stereotypes of the people who would gladly choose the Department of Mysteries and perhaps work there in the future. When they were all rounded up and sent to the benches to sit, Eugenia hadn’t really been surprised. Truly, she expected they would take part in some activity like that. Why be split in departments for any other reason than that?

The benches weren’t uncomfortable, but maybe Eugenia was just biased. The prospect of doing something made things much more bearable, even though her head was buzzing. Why had she chosen it in the first place? For the stars and the solitude? Or because she was obsessive with work to such a degree, she would grab any chance possible to become an Unspeakable. The boundless knowledge was an intriguing offer, and she would consider a lot of things when given access to something like that. What if she could create solid evidence she wasn’t impure that way? Can an Unspeakable tamper with the material they are given and then not be interrogated as they have vowed not to speak about their classified work? If so, she would jump at the opportunity, most likely, that bigoted, bigoted mind of hers.

She fit the stereotype of the Unspeakable even better. She was no good person anymore, nothing but a morally grey girl oscillating between levels of trust, moods and masks. The internal battle, strong as it was, did nothing to affect her composure. She looked calm and placid on the outside, when inside she felt like bursting. What if they asked them to reveal their biggest secret. Worse, what if the work wasn’t anonymous and this was given to someone. What if someone gained access to them and there was some spell cast on the paper? But no, wasn’t this a camp organised by children? None of them, none of at least those she had heard of, were machiavellian kids. That wasn’t their scope. Right?

Train of thought suddenly fragmented, she looked up and reached for a folder, feeling the need to politely thank. With care, she removed the silver stamp in quite a surgical manner and opened the envelope seamlessly. Inside was a paper, with the heading reading “Unspeakable Research Assignment”. Her eyes lit up momentarily and even though the excitement couldn’t break the composure and mask, a smile on her face was momentarily there, betraying her delight at such a thing.

Maybe she was just a sucker for cool books and forbidden questions, but it lightened up her mood enough not to keep drowning in misery and self doubts. A memory of her and her sister poring over books back home when they were particularly stumped when it came to a potions ingredient question, laughing and finding new knowledge. The books they opened were, of course, not readily available to the general populace, but not forbidden either. It seemed that the idea of secrecy drew her attention towards a task. God, maybe it was because she always had a reason to hide. You are just drawn in because it doesn’t pull on your heartstrings.

Two hours to write and pore over books was a large amount of time, Wugenia decided. So, looking at her watch, she made sure to research for about an hour and then begin answering the questions. Brief reads on topics that seemed obscure yet incredibly fascinating was her idea of thrill seeking, after all. By the end of the hour, she had accumulated a bunch of notes, because in true Eugenia fashion, the heiress took notes for her later answers. She wanted to consult the times as less as possible later, so that things were more structured, in a way. And so, she began answering. The responses were written on the paper in elegant cursive.

I. Time; If you could change one moment in your past, should you?

Each and every event of the past can have a giant effect in the future. Minutes, seconds, milliseconds can make the difference between winning and losing, life and death. If I have made it thus far in life, it means I have avoided circumstances that could have killed me, if done differently. Changing one thing in the past, even the slightest, could alter my future and as much as I would like to try something like that, it’s better to be cautious than rash. The only way I’d change something was if it was guaranteed it would change absolutely nothing in my timeline. Otherwise, I wouldn’t touch the past. What has happened, happened. It’s not my job to alter the truth.

Eugenia shuddered after writing this response. In reality, she wished she could have changed some moments, wished she had never known and wished she hadn’t dug where she shouldn’t have. But what she wrote was true. What has happened cannot be changed and she wouldn’t want to risk anyone’s life and morality just for a selfish change. You cannot change fate and even if you do, not after you learn it.

II. Space; What exists beyond, that you cannot see?

This depends on what “beyond” we are talking about. Beyond space, essentially beyond the observable universe, there could be anything. Anything between an abyss or a universe just like ours, full of stars and galaxies, whose light however will never reach us. There could be other civilisations as well, of any level of the muggle categorisation system called “Kardashev Scale”. We will never know what is beyond, but we can only my speculations. My definitive answer is not the same as someone else’s, and no possible answer may be right in the end.
If we are talking in regard of what is after Death, although this has to do with another department, no one truly knows either; even those who have died and came back don’t know. Our outlook on the metaphysical and posthumous environment we will be in is shaped by our religion and our own beliefs. Thus, there is no way any person will know what truly lies beyond death, for there is no person without an opinion who hasn’t hard or hasn’t been influenced of other’s opinions.

Lengthy answer, at that, but it was true. She had just read about that Scale and was fascinated by it. To know that humanity hadn’t even reached the stage of 1 was depressing, but also intriguing in terms of what our civilisation will be able to do when humanity does reach it, hopefully without destroying itself in the process.

III. Thought; Is any thought truly original?

Every thing you have thought has been someone’s thought before. The language you use is used by millions of others for hundreds or thousands of years. You could say that someone has thought the same as you, and that thoughts are not original. Because our thoughts are impacted by memory, lifestyle, childhood and more, those influences can make the thoughts of anyone “unoriginal”. However, no two people have lived through the exact same things, have the exact same ideals and upbringing; more importantly, no two people have the same perception of events. Everyone rationalises and emotionalises things differently. You can’t describe your life in a word and no two people can describe their life in the exact same way. Hence, your thoughts are influenced by the way each person perceives the world, which is unique, making all thoughts unique. Now, there isn’t exactly a correlation between a unique thought and an original thought, but as the definition of originality is arbitrary, everyone can perceive this question differently. Ultimately, this is up to how you perceive the world.

Long answer again. Eugenia really got philosophical with this one, and she knew it. Her head was starting to pound and her hand was cramping. She had made it half way through. She could definitely finish three more questions.

IV. Love; What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic?

Love isn’t exactly what overcomes magic. Love is the mechanism behind several branches of magic and innate spells you could only do without knowing. It is a powerful motive and motives can make us do extraordinary things, whether “good” or “evil”. This also depends on what type of love we are talking about. Feelings of being enamoured with someone, what we perceive as romantic love and a mother’s devotion to her child are different feelings even if they fall under the same umbrella. Thus feeling of love is what powers us to overcome magic in ways that might be instantaneous magic themselves.

Her answer this time was shorter, but no less theoretical. Was the goal of this activity to make them drone on philosophical questions, or were they simply meant to answer in a short manner? Eugenia knew she had taken it to the other end of the spectrum. Maybe this was a good thing, for an Unspeakable. Recognising ambiguity.

She got up from her bench and went over to the drinks station, pouring herself a cup of saffron tea. Bring Greek, they had access to cheap saffron ingredients, for the most potent of saffrons came from an area of Greece. She didn’t know why she had brought a tea bag, that was true, but for all she knew, it was some of the best tea. Making a mental note to let the tea steep while she wrote her next answer, she returned to her seat and adjusted her writing materials. She was getting closer to finishing and it seemed she had ample time left.

V. Death; What makes something truly gone?

Nothing is truly gone unless it is erased from existence. Not a single memory of it, written account or testament, no evidence of its existence, no suspicion of where it is. When no one knows about something, and only those dead know without a single way, tangible or not, to uncover its existence, then something is truly gone. Physical death doesn’t mean a person is gone beyond the traditional sense of using it as a stand-in for the word “death”. Since there are mental recollections of the person, their identity records and their contribution to society is still there, they aren’t gone. In this sense, no one and nothing is truly gone. If we as a society believed in the above statement, we might have a different outlook on life. And this is completely factual, taking metaphysical beliefs into no account.

She didn’t want to think about it. The answer she gave. The cold dissection of feelings she was presenting in it was a lot to bear. She took a breath after finishing and tried to stop the torrent of memories from hitting her. The days she would ponder this at length. Eugenia didn’t want to believe that people were truly gone to hold a semblance to reality. Like she was trying to hold some golden strings of life that attached her to life and she didn’t want to lose them. It hurt, feeling like someone was gone without being gone; the feeling was something less like relief and more like a haunting pain. It felt like she was coming face to face with her fractured ethics and it hurt her deeply. Why did she answer like that? Because she would never stick to a puny, wrong answer if it meant it would serve as a sugarcoat. Maybe she was meant to hurt.

There was one more question to answer. And quietly, she despaired, for she didn’t know what to write. It took her long to choose the words, meticulously. Her mask of composure wasn’t meant to fall; she couldn’t risk her mask to fall. With quiet breaths, she grabbed her tea, put some honey in it and returned. Her head was in pain. But she needed to finish the assignment. The statement did power her obsessive work tendencies, but what could she do?

VI. Prophecy; If you knew your future, would you still choose it?

While some things from your future are predetermined, most are forged. Knowing the exact way things will go is perhaps one of the worst things. Blinded by it, you would fall into the trap of the future, or try to resist it and create possibilities, that would only end at the same thing. It all comes down to whether you know if it is a fixed future, some loosely worded prediction, or a detailed account of what is to come, set in stone.
For the two first accounts, I’d try to live my life the way I want it and do what seems right. The doubts can be pushed in the back of my mind, because if it’s the general, foggy, perhaps not even true outline of my future, accepting it means accepting the uncertainty that comes with every day.
For the last option, I’d listen to it, accept it, see if I can change it and if not, I’d ask someone to remove that memory. I don’t want to know what happens, because then, the dread would be worse than the uncertainty. I’d prefer to live my life than dread my end, for the anxiety that comes with it is a reminder that I’m alive and not a shell of who I had been before learning the prophecy.

If you asked Eugenia at another time, she didn’t know if that would have been her answer. It really had to do with her mood on the day and if she was desperate. And now she was. Fighting the torrent of memories and tears threatening to spill from her eyes, she let down her quill and began to reflexively drink her tea. If someone talked to her, she would have to be composed. And she was. Ever thoughtful and polite. Yet inside, she felt empty. Maybe it would come back to her.

The reason why Bella Light chose the Department of Mysteries was, well, a mystery. She wasn't especially mysterious, not in the way you would normally expect, but she was a deep, thoughtful thinker that loved diving into hard questions. Of course, Bella simply felt drawn to the topic of mysteries, and she instantly knew that this department was the one for her.

Being named as an Unspeakable seemed curiously mysterious, which was perhaps the case why the people were named that. All the questions that Bella and her fellow Unspeakables pondered was philosophical and currently unknown.

Tonight, Bella Light was thrilled to learn that she was granted access to a collection of research books that was usually not for school students to use, but because she was researching as part of the department, she was allowed entry to these books.

Sitting down, feeling the mystifying vibe in the air, Bella got ready to answer the inexplicable questions that were about to appear. She sat on one of the couches, and with snacks, drinks, and a quill, Bella gently tore open the envelope to see the assignment inside.

"Oh, a research assignment? But a peculiar one, since it was to answer questions that cannot truly be researched, huh?" Bella asked herself. "Well, good, because those are some of my favorite types of questions."

Unspeakable Research Assignment

I. Time; If you could change one moment in your past, should you?

Bella shook her head, dipping her quill in ink to answer the first question.
No, I would not change any moments of my past, because they are a part of who I am, my identity. Without my failures, I cannot have successes. Without sadness, there isn't true happiness. The lowest points of my past all taught me something important, something that helped me become who I am today. They made me stronger, braver, better, and made my highest points truly worth it. That is why my answer is no.

Bella read over what she said, nodding contently.
"That seems right," she muttered to herself.

II. Space; What exists beyond, that you cannot see?

Bella frowned. This one is slightly harder, making her think slightly more. She pursued her lips, then suddenly brightened.

Everything does. Space, and what we see, is truly just part of what we think we see. There is always more to it, because there is no limit, no ending, no impossible in this universe. Beyond what we can observe in the universe are more mysteries, more secrets to uncover. Beyond what we think we know is more knowledge, more history, forgotten, lost, ready to be found. What we see is only a slight sliver in the story of life.

Bella moved on to the next question.

III. Thought; Is any thought truly original?

Yes and no. The main idea of a thought may be repeated by someone else, eventually. However, the emotion, the meaning, the setting, and the personality of the thought will be different. In a way, a thought is like a human being, it comes alive through the brain, and every time someone thinks it, it is in a slightly different place. It's hard to explain, but I hope you know what I mean.

Bella wasn't sure if the answer was too vague or not, but she just sighed and moved on to the next question. After all, this department is called the Department of Mysteries. Who are they if they can't handle some vagueness?

IV. Love; What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic?
Love is powerful enough to overcome magic because it overcomes fear. It ends with content that you are doing the right thing, that you are choosing the right step for your loved ones. In a way, love is the feeling of knowing that they are special enough to you that you would sacrifice yourself for them, fight for them. And in that moment, you aren't scared of magic anymore, of what comes next, because you know you are doing the right thing.

V. Death; What makes something truly gone?

Something, or someone, is truly gone when no one remembers anymore. When the person, place, or thing (for the sake of this question, let's just say "something") is forgotten, the memories fade, until it is just a whisp in the air. However, if it is remembered, it would thrive and live in our memories, meaning that it is always alive through our hearts.

VI. Prophecy; If you knew your future, would you still choose it?
If I knew my future, it depends if I would still choose it. Usually, I say yes, don't mess with fate, but this is a tough question. If my future involves hurting a lot of people, or if I can prevent someone from hurting a lot of people, of course I will choose to be the good one. I would change to save others, to become a better person. However, I think the future changes constantly. If I change today, so many things would change tomorrow. You can't really change or choose your future, you know? It's part of who you are, it's up to fate. You can try to shape your future, but in the end, you can't really control other people, and your future is ultimately tied with their lives.

Bella wondered if she was being a little too honest, but she just decided that it was good. It was the right answers.

The late afternoon had brought Diana to an unusual gathering space. The campfire area had been transformed for the evening with tables and benches scattered around the clearing alongside couches and chairs. Candles flickered on the tables which casted a warm glow over the parchment and writing materials that had been provided. Snacks and drinks had also been set out though Diana's attention was immediately drawn toward the small collection of research books. Being part of the Department of Mysteries cabin had already taught Diana that mysteries didn't always have straightforward answers. Sometimes the most interesting questions were the ones that nobody could completely answer.

When a small black envelope sealed with silver wax was handed to her Diana's curiosity immediately grew. She carefully broke the seal and unfolded the parchment inside. Her eyes moved over the six questions. They were certainly not homework questions. Why would there be homework during summer camp? But Diana didn't mind because she loved learning, and she could learn from these questions. Diana picked up a quill and thought for a moment before beginning.

I. Time; If you could change one moment in your past, should you?

I don't think I would. There are moments in the past that I might wish had gone differently, but changing one moment could change everything that happened afterward. Something that seems like a mistake might have taught you something important or led you somewhere you were supposed to be. If I changed it, I might never know what else would have changed with it. I think the past is better understood than changed. We can learn from what happened even when we don't like what happened. Besides if we spent all our time trying to fix yesterday, we might miss what is happening today.

Diana paused and reread her answer. When she was satisfied with her answer she moved onto the second question.

II. Space; What exists beyond, that you cannot see?

I think there is probably much more than we realize. There are things we cannot see with the naked eye because they are too far away, too small, or simply beyond what we can understand. The fact that we cannot see something doesn't mean that there is nothing. There could be more stars, more worlds, or even things that nobody has thought of yet. I don't think there has to be one definite answer either. Maybe that is what makes space so interesting. Every time we discover something new there is usually something else beyond it that we don't understand.

She glanced briefly toward the evening sky when she finished writing her answer. It was difficult not to wonder how many things were hidden beyond it. Diana dipped her quill into the ink again and answered the third question.

III. Thought; Is any thought truly original?

I don't think a thought can ever be completely separate from everything that came before it. What we think is influenced by what we have seen, heard, learned, remembered, and experienced. Even if two people have the same idea they might have arrived at it in completely different ways. I think that makes thoughts both unoriginal and original at the same time. The idea itself might have existed before, but the person thinking it has their own experiences and their own way of understanding it. Maybe originality isn't about thinking something nobody has ever thought before. Maybe it's about what you do with the thought once you have it.

At that answer Diana smiled slightly. It seemed like the sort of question that could probably be debated for hours. Everyone has their own thoughts and feelings so she knew that everyone would be answering the questions differently, especially the third one. Diana then moved onto the fourth question.

IV. Love; What makes love powerful enough to overcome magic?

I think love can overcome magic because it isn't really something that can be measured like a spell. Magic can have rules, wand movements, incantations, and limitations, but love isn't something they would normally be too afraid to do. It can give people courage when they don't think they have any. Maybe that is what makes it so powerful. It isn't necessarily stronger than magic. It makes people stronger than they thought they could be.

Before moving onto the fifth question Diana considered something else. But after rereading what she had written she decided that her answer was finished and moved onto the fifth question.

V. Death; What makes something truly gone?

This question made Diana's quill hover above the parchment a little longer as she thought about what the question was asking and how she should answer it. When she got an idea for an answer she began to write.

I don't think something is truly gone simply because it cannot be seen anymore. A person can leave behind memories, stories, things they created, and the people they affected. A place can be destroyed but can still be remembered. Even something as small as a conversation can stay with someone for years. I suppose something might only be truly gone when there is absolutely nothing left of it which means not a memory, not a record, not an influence, and not even anyone who remembers that it existed. Until then perhaps it is still somewhere even if it isn't somewhere we can see.

When she finished writing she looked at what she had written. That answer felt strangely difficult to put into words but she had succeeded at doing so. Finally she reached the last question.

VI. Prophecy; If you knew your future, would you still choose it?

Diana stared at the parchment. This question felt different from the others. Perhaps because she knew what it was like to experience things that other people might not always understand. Diana is a Seer and while she hasn't seen any visions or any prophecies, she has a very strong intuition which tends to guide her when things are about to go wrong.

I don't know if I would like to know my future. If I knew exactly what was going to happen I think it would become difficult to tell if my choices really were my own. I might make a decision because I knew it would lead to something I had already seen rather than making the decision because it felt right. And if I saw something I didn't like I might spend all my time trying to prevent it from happening. I also don't think knowing the future necessarily means that it cannot be change. A prediction might only show one possibility or it might be something that depends on choices people haven't made yet. Even if something seems certain the choices made along the way could matter. So if I knew my future I think I would still try to choose for myself. If I liked what I saw I wouldn't want to follow it simply because I had seen it. And if I didn't like it I wouldn't fear of it to decide how I lived. Maybe that is why not knowing is important. The future is supposed to be something we reach and not something we follow.

Diana set her quill down when she finished answering the sixth question and slightly leaned back. She read through all six questions from beginning to end. She still wasn't sure whether they were any correct answers to questions like these. Everyone could look at time, space, thoughts, love, death, and prophecy differently depending on their experiences because everyone is different in their own unique ways. But perhaps that was exactly why they had been given this assignment. Diana glanced toward the books again as her curiosity returned. She had answered all six questions. Somehow she now had even more questions then when she started.
