Even though she had barely escaped life threatening situations in the past, it was now that Eugenia doubted her life choices. After a long and hard absence from school, she returned in late May. Only issue: she had returned on the brink of exam season.

It was truly unfortunate she had missed most of the year because she was literally being hunted down, not only because of the reason all of this had happened, but because she had missed most of the lessons of the year. The last time she had been in a classroom being late October. And in her seven months of absence, she still did her school work and tried to keep up with the class. Or at least, the progress of her class as much as she could predict or rather, make educated guesses about.

Still, even though she had read the material with so much concentration she could begin reciting complete paragraphs, possibly without a word changed, she was afraid she needed more time. The few lessons she didn’t miss were quite useful on their own, as they were recaps of the entire previous year, so they were probably the most important and helpful classes for those who didn’t pay attention, hadn’t shown up in class, or were quietly pulled out by their parents and allowed to return only for the exams. Eugenia could easily guess which was her category.

She had somehow managed to convince her parents much earlier than she should have. With the issue of not being able to attend the same school as her sister for the wretched safety reasons that dictated her life now, things should have gone much slower and the reason they didn’t was her own, perhaps wrongful intervention. Her sister was of course mad at her. Mad for not resisting more, mad for not doing almost anything to stop the adults from separating them. But the heiress had seen the sorrow in their eyes and the fact that they wouldn’t let go of the issue if they didn’t accept. It was the only way to make sure her sister wouldn’t be put at fault, even if it left a bitter aftertaste. She was supposed to be the older and more responsible one, and she didn’t mind shouldering her sister, if it meant that she would be safer. Being apart for seven years, bar holidays, when they planned to be together for the three years they could almost daily since Eugenia first stepped into King’s Cross was the ultimate sacrifice for them. sisterhood so golden shouldn’t be confiscated by fate, even temporarily. Yet she had returned, they fought and made up in tears, their clipped feathers remembering how they can grow again.

And Eugenia was back to school again. Back at the death academy and reputed glorious academic institution called Hogwarts. Clutching her books and running from one exam to the other. Soon enough, she’d write one more, so the Greek took her books to the library to study alone, with some helpful material she had managed to win from an older year from a bet. Today she would study her two soon-to-be-tested subjects, as well as read up her notes on the Patronus Charm. She had been practicing all year, yet nothing came out of her wand other than the occasional silver mist. The situation was truly frustrating.

Searching for a table was quite hard, as she needed to find a single desk beg enough to spread the books over. Looking back at her planner, she would divide the session into three parts: one for each subject and half an hour in the end for the Patronus reasearch. The young girl took off her watch, setting it next to her, and organised her materials in a way that would make the desk appear less messy than it already was. She mustn’t lose her composure now, or leave anything besides perfect in her repertoire. The girl had to study hard and revise, but it wasn’t as if she didn’t bat an eye about her reputation, especially now. Now that a misstep could be an accusation, a rumour, a refusal. Maybe even death if it went too far.

But these things were far too mundane for such worries. If Eugenia wanted her straight O’s, she knew that she must hyperfixiate on the task in front of her. And hyperfixiate on the task she did, her focus unwavering the moment the thoughts were blacked out for a second. She wrote down all that was important again and again, practicing all the spells one by one until the incantations rolled off her tongue before she knew it. Curse her for taking all the electives.

So focused she was, that she wouldn’t notice anyone watching her, and she didn’t care. She displayed exactly the image she wanted to. The perceptive child chose to ignore all possible threats. She currently had other goals in mind.

Speech Thoughts

Pam was going to blow up her paper.

She was also going to blow up whichever teacher had decided that memorising seventeen different ingredients, their properties, their interactions, and precisely what happened when you added them in the wrong order constituted an appropriate use of a person's afternoon.

Unfortunately, blowing up things was probably frowned upon.

Especially in the library.

She was beginning to feel that she was being remarkably restrained, considering the circumstances.

The problem was that the parchment remained stubbornly intact despite the sheer force of hatred being directed towards it. Worse, the answer was apparently somewhere in the large, thick book that was in her face. Pam was sure of it. It had to be. She had been staring at the same question for so long that she was beginning to suspect the ink was mocking her.

She dropped her quill.

"This is stupid."

Exams were approaching. This was supposed to be revision.

Instead, she was stuck with a question which seemed like it was going out of its way to get on her nerves.

She needed help.

The admission was painful.

As was the realisation that there were people in the library who might actually be able to provide it.

Pam looked around.

Ther was literally not a single familiar face around that she could beg ask for help. Most people were either deeply engrossed in their own work or looked like they would rather be approached by a rampaging troll than a student asking about homework.

Then she spotted someone familiar.

Pam had seen her around a few times. They weren't exactly friends, but it was a familiar face. More importantly, she was sitting behind a mountain of books with the sort of concentration Pam desperately wished she possessed.

She could ask her.

Except Pam couldn't recall her name.

Well that was convenient.

She knew of her. She knew they had met. She distinctly remembered being involved in the same disastrous evening involving Black ink and enough potion-related trouble to last several lifetimes.

Her name, however, had apparently been filed away in the same mental cabinet as every other piece of information Pam desperately needed at the worst possible moment.

Pam squinted at her from across the library.

Eugenia.

...Eugenia?

That sounded right.

Probably.

There was only one way to find out, and unfortunately it involved walking over there.

Pam gathered her parchment, closed her textbook with considerably more force than necessary, and stood.

She made it halfway across the library before stopping.

This was ridiculous.

She couldn't walk up to someone and say hello, I don't remember your name, but could you please save me from failing Potions?

Actually, she probably could.

Definitely could.

It was either that or spend another twenty minutes staring at the same question.

Pam continued towards the table.

"Excuse me?"

She waited for the girl to look up before holding out her parchment.

"You're Eugenia, right?" She asked with relatively more confidence than she actually felt, "Can you... help me out?"

It didn’t take long for Eugenia to finish going over her notes and then transferring over to the practice question sheets she kept in her enchanted satchel. The girl scribbled down her answers as quickly as possible, for she was timing herself, and mentally noted to fetch her Silver Arrow after for a fly. She was getting slightly tired, but as she had much more to do, the girl wouldn’t even dream of stopping now.

Three practice sheets later, she looked over to her watch, exhausted, realising that she was only ten minutes away from hitting her two and a half hour mark on studying the subject. With a final glance, she took out her wand and practice the more fine parts. The lesson was Transfiguration, and obviously, she had to practice. Without trial and error, no one got better.

She overstepped her time limits by a whopping twenty minutes. Her wand was now being twirled from one finger to the other, as she finally felt satisfied with studying. The Greek looked around and chuckled, thinking that her sister would have loved it here. It was detrimental to her psyche, the thought that they’d be apart for so long. Even if she’d start her foundation year coming semester, Ifigenia wouldn’t be allowed to come here. The first time she would be allowed to step foot in Hogwarts would be during one of those Death Balls either in the Fall or in Spring. As a first year of Durmstrang Institute. Gone were the dreams of being in Hufflepuff together. Or having breakfast together, for that matter. It all kinda sucked. But now she had to study.

Opening the strands of her enchanted satchel, the girl reached towards one of the inner pockets. Grabbing a sherbet lemon, she closed the book propped up open in front of her and popped the candy in her mouth. The sour, yet sweet taste was one of her favourites, and she would definitely buy more next time she went to Honeydukes. At least now she was a third year and she had four more years of unrestricted field trips to Hogsmeade. It sure was a great retreat, one that she would utilise as much as possible given that she had missed most excursions that year.

It didn’t take long for her to close all the Transfiguration textbooks she was reading from and putting them back in her satchel. The next two and a half hours began: Study of Ancient Runes. Eugenia spent the next hour or so studying her notes and occasionally, looking up from her work to observe. There were a few study groups scattered here and there, in the section of the library she was, while she could spot a multitude of solo learners from all kinds of years. Her session continued almost without any distraction until the mark of the hour, when heavy footsteps broke her focus, seemingly getting louder and more direct in a way.

The heiress looked up to see a blonde girl heading towards her, which her mind immediately recognised as Pamela Graham, a second year Hufflepuff. They had met, really, a year ago or so, in that nightmare of a period that was the appearance of Darkest Night potions literally everywhere. At least the girl hadn’t been very badly affected, as the boys had been. The memories of the inky black vomit and the notes she made couldn’t be burned off her eyes for days. And now she was remembering again.

But she tried to focus again, smiling softly as Pamela came towards her. The girl needn’t see that part of her yet, and being polite was a basic. At the question regarding her identity, Eugenia simply hummed and nodded. The girl seemed to be holding a potions textbook, and from the disarray of books and ingredients on her previous work table, Eugenia made her most accurate assumption.

The girl then asked for help. And the heiress pondered for a moment. On one hand, she needed to revise Runes. The exam was important to her, because she needed all her options open for career choice, and she wouldn’t accept anything less than an O. On the other hand, it was one of the subjects she had studied extensively in her period of isolation, as she didn’t cast that much, and remembering the names and meaning of a few runes was nothing difficult, especially to a girl trained in memory like her. And having trained with the Greek, Russian, and French phonetics and spelling for a while now, the sounds were a walk in the park for her. So, she beckoned for Pamela to sit, making savage for her on the desk and bench. Her potions exam would be the last one she would sit, and a little early practice wouldn’t be bad.

“Most gladly. There’s some space for you to sit, but tell me should you need more. I hope you’ve got all the materials you need with you, right now, as I’m not currently studying Potions.” Eugenia grabber her wand again and twirled it around her fingers. Tutoring was one of the best study methods, when it came to deeply understanding the subject. “So, Pamela, which part troubles you the most?”
