Damaris walked through the corridors of Hogwarts, lost in thought after a long day of classesโ€”days filled with new information, spells, and the experiences that were gradually transforming her into the witch she had longed to become since the end of her first year.
"Classes were great... though I would have preferred a good coffee instead of pumpkin juice," she mused, running her hand from her forehead to her hair and carefully sliding her fingers through her curls. What she detested mostโ€”aside from starting the day without coffee (something she would have to endure throughout the school year)โ€”was messing up the curls she spent so much effort styling every morning; it put her in a foul mood, worse even than hearing a baby Mandrake scream when pulled from its pot. As she walked, she thought about her classes for the year; there were several that appealed to her and that she was eager to master, while others interested her less.
"Don't be silly; you need to focus on getting good grades" she told herself quietly, knowing that if she let her lack of interest in certain subjects get the better of her, she wouldn't put in the effort to succeedโ€”and that wasn't what she wanted. "They're important subjects..." she convinced herself, though a part of her brain argued otherwiseโ€”a thought she promptly decided to ignore. She walked on, clearing her mind, until she stumbled upon the library and stepped inside with a natural, easy smile. She hadn't been able to visit the library before, so this was her first time seeing the vast room filled with towering shelves and stacks of neatly arranged booksโ€”a sight that sparked her curiosity and excitement, making her want to read almost all of them. She wandered past the shelves, looking for something that caught her eye; she spotted a few Herbology books she knew she would read later, as well as one about magical creaturesโ€”a subject that had fascinated her more than anything else since she first discovered the wizarding world. Magical creatures. If it were up to her, she would be in the Care of Magical Creatures class right now, but for the time being, she would have to wait until her third year. "Almost there... just one more year..." she told herself encouragingly, putting the book back in its spot so she could keep exploring. As she looked around, she climbed the stairs to the second floor; passing by a pillar, she spotted a book she knew very wellโ€”one that never bored her. "Holy shit... do they have The Odyssey here?" she whispered excitedly, gazing from behind the pillar in disbelief; she couldn't believe Hogwarts had those stories, too.
As she thought about how excited she was to re-read The Odyssey at schoolโ€”since she hadn't been able to bring her own copy from her father's house in Liverpool to Hogwarts that yearโ€”she didn't notice that someone else had beaten her to it and picked up the book to read as well. When she refocused and walked over to the shelf to grab it, she saw it was gone; the excitement drained from her, and she almost thought sheโ€™d imagined itโ€”until she spotted a boy at a nearby table holding the book and reading it. Damaris didn't recognize him as being in her year; she didn't recall seeing him in classes with the other second-years. He was tallโ€”at least to herโ€”with somewhat fluffy black hair and a rather pale complexion; he looked quite serious as he read, which quickly made Damaris abandon any thought of approaching him about the book heโ€™d taken.
"How embarrassing... I can't ask for the book back; heโ€™s free to take it... What if heโ€™s a fourth-year? Oh no, that would be too embarrassing..." she thought, burying her face in her hands and trying to gather her thoughts. There were no other copies of The Odyssey left on the shelf, which disheartened her, as that boy had taken the only one available. "Damn it... what should I do? Should I wait? Leave?" she wondered, resting her arms on her bent knees and hugging them to her chest. She hadn't even realized when she had slid down to the floor, leaning against the bookshelf behind her and covering her legs with her uniform robe; she was wearing a skirt, and she preferred sitting comfortably over "sitting properly" as her father used to tell her to do.

Damien truly did enjoy his time in the library, instead of heading into his own personal area like he would usually but he decided to stay out in the public domain as he was on a small little adventure. See he had found another translation of The Oydessy that was different from all the other ones he owned or have read before.

He wanted to see just how different authors interpreted the original translation. The thing about Damien was that when he started reading a good story he tended to get immersed in it and would not pay his surroundings any attention at all. He had walked into the walls of the school and manor many times due to him not fully paying attention to his surroundings.

So right now he didnโ€™t even notice a girl looking at him as well as the book he was reading going through her own little dilemma currently. Damien honestly found this weirdly interesting as he could point out the flaws as well as praise it for certain things it did better than other adaptations. However he felt it weird that a lot of the good stuff that made the oydessy so terrifying wasnโ€™t included in this version of the book however he sure that would be fixed one day if not today.

Damaris gazed at the boy for a few seconds, unsure of what to do, untilโ€”moments laterโ€”she rested her head on her knees and reflected for a moment.
"Well... I'll read that edition another day, then..." she thought, feeling somewhat disheartened but determined to find another book. She stood up, brushed off her clothes, and began looking for something else to read during her spare time. As she searched the shelves, she ran her fingertips over the spines of the books in the mythology section. She moved to the shelf she had been leaning against earlier and browsed until another book caught her eye; it wasn't about mythology, but astronomy. Damaris wouldn't call herself an astronomy fanatic, but she had always found it enchanting to look at the stars at nightโ€”simply relaxing and watching them twinkle in the distance. Without much thought, she picked up the book and opened it, examining pages filled with images of constellations and their names; she was completely captivated by the stories behind each constellation and star. She was so engrossed in her reading that she didn't even think about finding a table until she looked up and noticed other students sitting at tables near the windows. She started looking for a table, butโ€”unluckily for her (it felt like a curse that day)โ€”they were all occupied by large groups of students who were studying or just hanging out. The only relatively empty table was the one where the Ravenclaw boy was sitting. After a moment's hesitation, she seriously considered staying on the floor, though she knew sheโ€™d look a bit pathetic doing soโ€”a thought that made her feel even more awkward. So, feeling somewhat self-conscious, she began walking toward the boy's table, silently hoping he would let her sit on the other side. When she arrived and noticed he didn't even look up, she felt even more embarrassed.
"He's really focused... I'd hate to be distracted while reading..." she said, beforeโ€”a few seconds laterโ€”tapping him on the shoulder to get his attention, all while clutching her astronomy book against her chest with her other hand.
"Sorry... could I sit here too? The other tables... are taken..." she said shyly, waiting for the boy's response.

Damien suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder, he didnโ€™t know who it was but he also hadnโ€™t looked up yet as he was putting a little candy wrapped in blue foil in the last place he read so he wouldnโ€™t forget his placement or where he stopped at. He slowly looked up noticing a girl with long black curly hair that had blonde streaks in them was currently looking at him. He didnโ€™t recognize this girl but then again he didnโ€™t know many Gryffindors at all besides a few so it was understandable that he didnโ€™t recognize her probably. He just smiled at her as she seemed somewhat nervous or anxious which he never wanted anyone to be especially when trying to talk to him. โ€œOf course! I donโ€™t mind at all besides who am I to stop another kind soul from reading.โ€ He fixed the chains on his outfits along with moving his black hair out of his face a bit before scooting over so she still has room.

It was taking Damien time to still get used to his hair being black instead of his natural brown color, he did have to admit the black he was starting to enjoy having it so maybe if he liked it so much he might have kept it permanently. He actually still had to ask Artie how he felt about it as he donโ€™t think he showed him it yet. He opened his book back to the page he was on before he had a thought and spoke to the girl next to him.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome to read along with me..if youโ€™d like I donโ€™t mind sharing books.โ€ It was true Damien had so many books at home and even her at Hogwarts so he was used to sharing with people so it wasnโ€™t like he was something new.

Damaris opened her eyes wide when she heard the boy speak so kindly to her, readily agreeing to let her sit at the tableโ€”something that surprised her, especially since he wanted her to sit right next to him. Shyly, she nodded and took the chair beside him, placing her Astronomy book on the table while tying her hair into a messy bun with the hair tie she always wore on her wrist; she knew herself well enough to know that, at some point in the day, she would want to put her hair up. "Thanks..." she murmured, feeling a bit shy about talking to someone new who was being so kind to her. If someone had told her at the start of the year that sheโ€™d be sitting next to a boy from another houseโ€”one who looked older than her, tooโ€”she wouldn't have believed it. Damaris snapped out of her thoughts when the boy suggested they read the book he had, The Odyssey, together. It took her by surprise, given that they barely knew each other, but she also found the gesture sweet. Before acceptingโ€”and she did truly want to accept the offer and read a different edition of a story she already knew almost by heartโ€”she spoke up:
"You wouldn't mind? You're already reading The Odyssey, and I don't want to be a bother... I mean, asking to sit here was already a lot..." she said with a smile, then quickly added, "which I appreciate, seriously..." correcting herself so she wouldn't seem ungrateful after heโ€™d agreed to let her join him at the table.
"But, well... if you don't mind... I see no reason not to reread the magnificent story of Odysseus and his countless attempts to return to Ithaca" she said, smiling; she was relaxed and visibly happy as she spoke about the story.
While waiting for the boy to answer, she took a moment to look at the cover of the astronomy book she had picked up; it was truly interesting and beautiful. Upon seeing the names of stars on the cover, she remembered something vital: she didn't know the boy's name. "Damn it..." she thought, closing her eyes for a moment before looking at him again and speaking.
"Sorry, but... I don't know your name..." she said with a small, slightly nervous smileโ€”though she didn't know why she felt nervous, given it was her first time interacting with him. "How... what is your name? I'm Damaris... Damaris Vailmont," she introduced herself with a smile, hoping to make a good first impression.

Damien just smiled at the girl and nodded his head gently, of course he didnโ€™t mind letting her join him in reading. Reading should be enjoyed by all no matter what and Damien was a firm believer of that. โ€œOf course, I do not mind at all as reading is for all! Besides Iโ€™ve read so many version of the Odyssey so why not! Besides itโ€™s more fun when youโ€™re with someone else reading!โ€ He gave her a charming smile before making more room and patting the seat beside him again to make it known he didnโ€™t mind at all.

Sure Damien was used to reading alone but he never mind having a reading partner ever now and then, he was used to being alone as a child and it was never fun for him at all, but now it seems here at Hogwarts he never had to feel that physically but mentally was a whole different story.

Damien found it a little poetic that this girl didnโ€™t know his name since in the Oydessy, Odysseus called himself a nobody. โ€œHaha well I would say Iโ€™m a nobody but that would just make me a somebody!โ€ He joked as he chuckled before holding his hand out and smiling at her. โ€œIm Dragonclaw, Damien Oydessyus Dragonclaw it is lovely to meet you Damarisโ€ He smiled happily as today felt like a lovely day.

Damaris chuckled softly at Damienโ€™s comment about being "Nobody"โ€”a clear reference to what Odysseus said in The Odyssey when facing the Cyclops Polyphemus. She listened as he introduced himself and couldn't hide her surprise upon learning that Damienโ€™s middle name was Odysseusโ€”literally Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. She was certain she looked like sheโ€™d seen a ghost, given the expression of surprise and almost tender amazement on her faceโ€”the kind her father used to say looked like a little girl tasting ice cream for the first time.
"Odysseus... is your name really Odysseus?" she asked with a smile, unable to conceal her excitement at the news. "I mean... youโ€™re literally named after the King of Ithaca; thatโ€™s cool" she said excitedly, looking him in the face as she chatted away.
"Itโ€™s nice to meet you, Odysseus" she said with a smile, teasingly suggesting she might call him by his middle name instead of his first. When she realized she was speaking so openly with someone sheโ€™d just metโ€”and who had just met herโ€”she suddenly felt self-conscious, nervous that she had been, as she put it, a bit annoying. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be a bother; I just... got excited about your name. If it bothers you, I won't call you that again" she said, realizing she had likely taken him by surprise with the way sheโ€™d spoken to himโ€”as if they had been friends since childhood.
Nervous and embarrassed, she glanced at the copy of the Odyssey he was holding, then at the astronomy book she had brought; she thought about putting it back on the shelf so they could read it together in peace.
"I'm going to... put this book back on the shelf, okay?" she said, picking up the astronomy book from the table, ready to return it. "I'll be right back, and... we can start reading" she said, then stood up with the book to put hers back where she had originally found it.

Damien smiled as no one had ever called him by his middle name before, it felt kind of nice as it was something new and exciting. He quickly noticed how panicked she looked just from calling him by his middle name. โ€œNo no! Itโ€™s quite funny heโ€™s a new nickname Iโ€™ve never been given before I enjoy it! So no need to feel so worriedโ€ He just gave her a nice smile to try and stop her from worrying so. It worried him a bit at how much she seemed to worry about many things so hopefully it wouldnโ€™t be too bad as that seemed like clear signs of anxiety at least from what Damien understanding was, again he would never be sure as he himself was not a therapist or someone who knows what he was talking about he was just assuming.

โ€œActually I think youโ€™re the first person to think my middle name was so cool or who may have even known the significance of it, so ir is very appreciated.โ€ He nodded when she mentioned something about putting a book back before his eyes sparkled as he noticed it was a Astronomy book. โ€œWait! You donโ€™t need to put that book back, leave it here and I can take it and read it another time I do not know if Iโ€™ve read it beforeโ€ He smiled as he did love reading about the stars and was quite found of them.

Damaris paused when Damien told her not to put the book away. She was about to ask why, but upon hearing his reply and seeing the look of excitement on his face regarding the astronomy book she was holding, she found it endearing; she hadn't imagined he would be interested in the subject. With a small smileโ€”and feeling a bit more at ease now that he had said he didn't mind being called by his middle name and even found it amusingโ€”she sat back down at the table next to him, placing the large book back in its original spot in front of her.
"Thanks; I didn't mean to be a bother... I was a bit too bold calling you Odysseusโ€”I'm sorry," she apologized nervously. She felt she might have been annoying, but knowing he didn't mind helped soothe her anxiety.
And yes, Damaris struggled with anxiety; as a child, she hadn't interacted with other kids her age until she met her best friendโ€”a meeting that only happened because the friend's parents were close with her own father, Tristan. Otherwise, she would have spent her childhood with no contact or relationships with peers and, in all likelihood, wouldn't know how to strike up a conversation.
"I didn't mean to seem too... eager..." she apologized again. It was something she needed to work on; ever since sheโ€™d started talking to classmates and making friends in Gryffindor, she found herself apologizing almost constantly.
"And sorry for apologizing so much... it's something I need to work on..." she said, though she instantly realized she had apologized again. She didn't understand it; she hadn't been this nervous around her friends since the day she met them.
"Well, I usually put on a confident front... I haven't really given myself the chance to be as anxious as I actually am" she told herself, before speaking to the boy again.
"You must think I'm weird, sorry... shit... um... it's something I'm trying to improve" she said, then fell silent, flustered by her constant apologizing. "It must be because I've never talked to a boy my age..." she thought, deciding that was the reason for her nervesโ€”even though she didn't enjoy feeling this way in front of such a kind boy. He remained calm despite seeing how nervous she was, which actually helped soothe her own nerves.

Damien just looked at her with a frown before putting his hand on her shoulder while looking at her, he noticed how she seemed to be a very anxious girl. He just gave her a reassuring smile before speaking. โ€œBreath, breath..itโ€™s quite alright, no need to be so worried you did nothing wrong.โ€ The more time Damien spent with this girl the more he realized she truly needed a confident boost, sure someone may seem confident and what not on the outside but on the inside she was and still is a complete mess who seemed to be worried about what a lot of people thought about her.

Damien didnโ€™t know truly how to feel while observing this as on one hand he could understand it quite a lot as he himself had struggled with that before but, on the other hand if she kept worrying herself till it made her sick she wouldnโ€™t be able to function properly and Damien just didnโ€™t know if his conscious would allow him to rest it that was to happen. For now he wouldnโ€™t think about it and just attempt to calm her nerves down maybe he should start carrying tea on himself tho he would have to figure out how to either make it if he just carried the bags or keep it warm if it was already made.

He put the book in the middle of them a she looked at her. โ€œShall we begin reading ?โ€
