𝕷Avery walked down the corridor with her head tilted towards the ground. The air around her thick with anticipation as voices crowded around her. Laughter. Joy. Peace. Yet it slid over Avery. Her broken self too broken to care. That was how things had been lately. A mess. A beautiful mess of colors that used to be bright, but had dulled to shades of black and gray. How had one moment changed her life forever? Would she ever go back to the girl she used to be? No. She knew that for a fact. After something major. Something bad, happened in a person’s life, they change. And that change is not always for the better. Sometimes it is the opposite.

Avery leaned her head against the wall. Classes were thankfully over for the day. Leaving her free to breathe. She could still feel the pressure of the eyes on her. Her focus had waned lately, but though she did not allow herself to get below an ‘O’ in a class, that did not mean she struggled. She struggled more than she let anyone realize. Always putting on a mask to hide how broken and horrible she truly felt. She did not want anyone worrying about her. Especially not Mikey. She knew he was worried enough already and dealing with his own problems. He did not need the extra added pressure of worrying about her. Though he did know what had happened.

She had lost someone very important that summer. Her grandfather. A man she looked up to and treated as a father. He was the one that practically raised her. The one that had taught her everything she knew about the world. He was the reason she was still alive and breathing. Now she was drowning without him. The hole in her heart once filled with his love snuffed out like a flame when smothered.

The lioness sighed as she allowed her book bag to slip off her shoulder and fall to the ground. Then she pulled out the ponytail holder holding her hair back and shook her head. The light chocolate brown waves falling around her face. She probably looked like a mess, but she did not care. Running her fingers through her hair, Avery relished the silky sensation. Even after a full day of flying classes and rushing down the halls so as to not be late for class, her hair had stayed somewhat decent. That was a first.

But there was no time to ponder that. Taking another deep breath, Avery let another long sigh escape her lips. She had to keep breathing. That was what mattered at the moment. If she stopped breathing for even a moment, her grief would consume her all over again. She could not let that happen. She had to breathe.

Lives change every day and we don’t know they do. Or we know they do, but not in the degree, or in the way we anticipated. Or we just don’t know. And as much as we may think we know, it is always an issue. This unexpected change. And one day, you learn to live with it. Eugenia had lost family members more than one time. She hadn’t felt the true slap of it until she lost her grandfather. A man of quiet dominance, who did not love openly, but would do anything for his granddaughters. All cousins were viewed as equal, but the girls would swell hearing his praise. One summer, they were together. The next, he was gone.

The old man’s birthday would have been approaching, if he were alive. In just three days, there could have been a large family gathering, celebrating another year to the Karageorgiadis patriarch’s life. Eugenia Smyrnidi couldn’t have possibly thought of the disastrous tangle fate left them in after May the Fourth of 2022. But she had to keep going, and to wallow in misery was not acceptable. From her neck hung the reputation of two grand families of Greece, and if she even wanted to survive, she would be careful not to mess up. The slip up of any pure blood could throw the family in a tabloid, and she had to behave like the perfect pure blood heiress. (Lest they learn about the impurity. If they do, the families are doomed. Dead in days.)

Since the beginning of fourth year, Eugenia had been working herself dry trying to get an early start on the material provided. Should something like last year happen, she wanted to be able to have as much knowledge as possible already, so that catching up doesn’t require as much time and effort as it would have otherwise. But that was definitely not easy. Between the many new books, her intense programme, duelling training, the Patronus charm, other gatherings and her perfectionism, this task was like a steep mountain climb. It progressed slowly and torturously.

Thankfully, some days things were better than others and Eugenia could feel a little more human and a little less like a machine. Today was not exactly one of them, but Eugenia was at least not experiencing an emotional rollercoaster this day. It was extremely difficult for the young girl to keep her mind clear, and she wasn’t really successful. Today though felt less like a drag and more like walking around with a gaping emotional void. She knew her grandfather’s birthday was in two days and back at her dorm, she was at the middle of crocheting a jacket for him. (What use is giving a dead man presents? Tradition and closure.) She would send one of the school owls to deliver it to his gravesite in a day or two. Greece is far away. The poor owls need to rest.

She had copied down the homework from her lesson and exited the room among the last, taking more time to pack her things to hear the questions students asked after class. If it were about advanced material, maybe she could make use of it. There were no questions this time though, and she couldn’t make her hands go faster. Routines had an important force. Her head was thinking, once again, at lightning speeds, but at least it wasn’t hurtful. Some days, it was. The realisation that she had no more classes for the day struck her suddenly and like a bullet in the back. Time had passed so fast, she hadn’t realised the sun was starting to fall. Mind electric, she strapped her enchanted satchel on her shoulder, her hand stiffening from carrying it like a purse. She had not realised that either.

The hallways felt for once, strangely empty, almost like the own burning hole of her psyche inside. But her head, was full. Not emotions and memories this time, but of some mundane thoughts that were threatening to enlarge and consume her. So she kept on walking.

As opposed to common knowledge, there are staircases in this school that didn’t move. And that was a gift. So, Eugenia reached one of the spots she had found in her thorough exploration of the place three years ago, in a seeming hurry, which completely disappeared once she sat down at the foot of the stairs, head leaning against the polished banister. That was when she noticed a girl, she seemed to be a lioness. And from the familiar feel to her face, she was either from her year or a quidditch player. It was the familiar of having one or two meaningful interactions, but not much.

So, the Greek sat there. She didn’t speak for she chose to wait until she was noticed.

𝕷Avery glanced up at the wrong moment. She had believed she was alone. Alone to drown in her grief and deal with the mess caused by her grandfather’s death. She was laid bare there. Her emotions shown for the world to see. The corridor seemed darker than normal. Like a shadow had been cast upon the world. She could feel the darkness creeping closer. Its tendrils reaching out to latch onto her, but they never did. Because in that moment, the lioness chose to glance up.

Standing before her was a girl. A girl probably not much older than herself, and a girl she recognized. Was she one of the badgers that competed against her last year in Quidditch? Yes. She must be. Her face was too recognizable to not be. Though the question lingered in the air. Why was she standing there patiently waiting to be seen? The two girls barely knew each other. Did the other girl recognize what was going on with her, or was she just being nice and letting Avery have a moment of silence.

The lioness did not know the answer to her question. She was too consumed with her grief threatening to pull her under again. But this time the lioness pushed down the grief. She could deal with it later.

Standing up, Avery looked down at the ground. Embarrassment flaring within her. She really had to get her act together and stop sobbing in the hallways.

“Sorry. Was I bothering you or blocking your path?” Avery questioned. Gritting her teeth if she had been the cause of the girl being late to something.
