With one hand, Nicandro supported his chin as he listened to Aurora speaking. His elbow was resting on his knee and he had pulled one leg over the other to get more comfortable. "I'm the oldest sister. If my younger siblings ever come to Hogwarts too... I think I'd have to look after them."
The boy honestly couldn’t imagine being the oldest. Such job came with responsibilities he was glad not to be burdened with. However, he did understand the heaviness of having to be a perfect person for the sake of the family, one way or another. “If?”, he asked, unable to ignore the phrasing. He blinked at Aurora wearily as it became harder and harder to stay awake. “You’ll have to figure it out. After a few years you’ll have enough experience to make sure they’re not dead before their first year has finished.”
The background noises of the train blurred together and he barely noticed her growing more and more quiet until there wasn’t a sound from her for three solid minutes. Strange. That was truly strange. What in Merlin’s name made her so pensive and silent all of the sudden? What about that annoying laughter and weird, unjustified excitement? Couldn’t she just decide on one mood instead of switching? Apparently not. “Cat got your tongue? Finally? I almost forgot the sound of peace.”
His gaze lifted from the floor to look at her. The sight was not the one he’d been expecting. To his surprise, Aurora seemed to try and shrink in her seat, and her head was turned towards the window. Hands were pressed to her chest. That was not a particularly confident posture. Normally, people put their arms close to their chest or stomach when they felt unsettled, upset or uncomfortable and wanted to leave as soon as possible. She didn’t strike him as someone to get rid of easily. Huh, maybe he had actually managed to kill her interest in conversing with him after all. Same old pattern. No one really lasted more than half an hour without hating him at the very best. This simply confirmed the fact that she had been acting for the sake of making it less difficult for both of them. But even the most cheerful clown runs out of energy and gets tired of solo entertaining an audience that doesn’t laugh eventually.
“Don’t make that face. It makes you look stupid,” he drawled. “Do you have the intention of it? You’re destroying the mood with it.”
He leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. “It’s creepy. You were so happy a minute ago. What are you plotting now that you’re so quiet? My death?” His voice drifted off. “Actually, don’t tell me. I don’t even want to know. Goodnight, Aurora.”
It wasn’t his inconvenience to bother with. If she was in the mood for being sad, that was her problem. And he drifted off completely.

With a jolt, the train came to a stop. Nicandro didn’t wake abruptly, but only very slowly as screaming children dragged their luggage through the corridor brutally, running wildly and trying to push past each other to reach the doors. Slowly, he opened his eyes, rubbing the sleep from his sticky eyes before rising from his seat. His hands reached for his own trunk up in the rack, pulling it out carefully. He guided it to the floor gently and pushed it towards the hallway. Until he suddenly realised that there was still a little Aurora. Right. What about her? With a sigh, he turned his head and spotted her still in their compartment. For a moment, he considered his options. Rushing out immediately wouldn’t make any sense as he didn’t want to get bumped around. So, he could wait in here. Or make himself useful. How was she going to get her trunk down anyway? He imagined her jumping for it and then the trunk hitting her head again. It was only right to help someone less… fortunate. Competent wasn’t the right word because height was no skill issue. If he were smaller and someone would leave him standing… He wouldn’t be too pleased. The world might not always work that way, but he didn’t want a bad conscience plaguing him whenever he stumbled across her. She wasn’t worth so many thoughts or a bad name. And, anyway, he might be able to get a favour out of it from her by doing this. Sighing, he stepped back. “Come on, Chauncey Oldridge (the name of the guy on the chocolate frog card Nicandro had LOL). Let’s get this over with.”
Once the trunk was on the floor, the corridor had finally cleared. Without another word or a gaze back, the young Henderson disappeared and left the train, walking towards an uncertain future and leaving the messy-haired girl, who had barged straight into his peace, behind.
