The corridor of the Hogwarts Express was far louder than Aurora had imagined. Children hurried past with their trunks bumping against their knees and the trolley witch was trying to squeeze through the crowd of students. Every compartment she passed seemed to burst with excited chatters. Some kids had already made friends while others sat with siblings or cousins, happily talking as if this journey were nothing special.

Aurora tightened her grip on the handle of her trunk. She had arrived at Platform Nine and Three Quarters later than she had hoped. Saying goodbye to her mother, and struggling to push her heavy luggage had took her time mostly. By the time she boarded the train, nearly every compartment had already been claimed.

"It's alright," she whispered to herself. "There has to be one, at least, right?"

She slid open the first compartment door. "Sorry, it's full." A boy said apologetically. Aurora smiled awkwardly and closed the door again. The next compartments wasn't any better.

"We're saving these seats."

"No room."

"We don't want girls in here!"

Aurora closed the door with an annoyed grunt. Her trunk felt heavier by the second. The train rocked gently beneath her feet, the whistle echoing through the station as it signals train will be on its way. Please don't leave without me finding somewhere. She continue walking down the swaying corridor, carefully avoiding trunks that had been abandoned outside compartment doors. The windows flashed with the last glimpses of Platform Nine and Three Quarters, as it slowly starts moving.

The further she walked, the quieter the train became. The lively conversations faded into muffled voices behind closed doors and only the rhythmic clatter of wheels against the rails accompanied her now. Then, she noticed a particularly quiet compartment, unlike the other noisy ones.

The girl pressed her face on the glass of the door to peer inside, fogging it with her breath. She saw a dark haired boy, alone. She smiled excitedly to see a potential friend and a compartment she could barge into. Sliding the door open, she offered a huge grin, "Hello, there! It looks mighty space-y in here." She laugh nervously as the boy turned his head at the sudden interruption. "May I join you?"

Coming here as early as possible had all been part of the plan. Perhaps not the one that Gwynn and Owen Henderson would’ve approved of, but a child could never fully satisfy their parents anyway. In Nicandro’s head it all made perfect sense. Enter the train quickly and claim an empty compartment all for himself. That way his patience with the other students wouldn’t wear thin before he even arrived at Hogwarts. Hogwarts, pfft.

Honestly, he had no idea what to expect. His father had sworn that it would be the ideal place to make 'lots of new acquaintances that will later help you be successful in life'. Nicandro wasn’t feeling that optimistic. He snorted at the idea. If he was lucky, he might just find one or two people worth his attention for over a minute.

After he had squeezed past the crowd of families that had taken up far more space than they deserved, he had finally managed to board the train alongside with Anwen, his older sister, who had disappeared into a compartment with her friends. Great.

Alone, he had made his way through the tight corridors that had caused him to feel claustrophobic. Couldn’t they have been a bit wider? There surely would’ve been enough money for it. Maybe the interior’s design had the intention to come off as cozy, but instead he was haunted by the impression of being a caged bird.

With a tight breath he had tried to calm himself. His jaw muscles were aching and sore from the tightness with which he had been grinding his teeth together. It wasn’t going to be that serious anyway. He’d learn a lot. He’d do great. He’d be fine. He quickly went past the compartments located at the fromt, assuming that it would be in vain to glance through the glass to check for an empty one or a space that was at least sparsely occupied. He had pulled his trunk after him with his hand curled tightly around it to the far end of the train. The social students would likely enter the ones at the front, so he prayed that no one would make the effort to walk this far. Even if, an introvert would be a lot less grating on his nerves than the children screeching and laughing loudly and excitedly in the other compartments. It was a miracle how much discipline people could lack. If these were his peers at Hogwarts, the upcoming years would surely be so much fun. They really invited anyone to this school.

Once Nicandro had dropped down in one of the empty compartments at the far end, he let out a sigh. Now, he was finally feeling the day catching up with him and rubbed a hand over his heavy, dry eyes. He leaned back in the cushions, skimming a finger over the worn material with scepticism and eventually rested his head against the headboard and let his eyelids slip shut. Hopefully, he’d be able to make up for the lost sleep or come up with a plan for Hogwarts.

Almost instantly, his fragile peace was shattered, just as he was drifting off. The door to his compartment flung open and he flinched hard at the sudden intrusion, head whipping around. Wide-eyed, he took in the gremlin who actually had the audacity to grin at him like the devil in person. It was a girl smaller than him, with disheveled strawberry blonde hair that looked like an absolute disaster. Who had cut that? He had to suppress an unamused laugh. The bob with the bangs couldn’t even be considered a style, it was closer to a miserable condition. And her clothes? Merlin, no. Please, anything but something like her kind. "Hello, there! It looks mighty space-y in here. May i join you?"

Absolutely not. There was no way in hell that he was going to deal with her. He cleared his throat, looked her dead in the eyes and said:Sorry, did you get lost? This is the wrong compartment, dear. I’m trying to spend the last few hours in peace, not with strange little creatures like you. I’m sure you’ll find some other place to sit.” He waved his hand dismissively, clearly signalling her to move on and out of his sight.

What the hell?

Strange little creatures? That was certainly something she hadn't expected to come out of a new friend's mouth. Her wide smile slowly faded into an awkward one. This boy surely didn't want her to be in here with him.

For a moment, she considered leaving, her slightly worn shoes slowly shuffling backwards into the hallway. But her plan was immediately disrupted when a group of boys jostled her from behind as they made their way to the trolley witch. Her body lurched forward into the compartment from the force of the shove. The very same boys who refused to let her in simply because she was a girl. Aurora glared at them, but they didn't even spare her a glance, leaving her with no choice but to sigh.

It was common, even in her neighbourhood, for boys and girls to separate themselves. Boys play in the mud, and girls play with dolls. Since Aurora regularly joined both groups, she often received strange looks and endless complaints from her peers and at the end, she never fit perfectly in neither groups. She never understood why they couldn't all just play together. Looks like it would be the same all over again in Hogwarts.

Well, this is better than being out there.

A mischievous grin returned to her face. She stepped fully into the compartment and slid the door shut behind her. "Unfortunately, the other carriages were full," she looked around, trying to figure out where to put her trunk. "Because some stinky boys don't know how to share." The girl mumbled under her breath in annoyance.

"So I'm gonna need you to bear with this strange creature for a while, at least until we arrive at Hogwarts. I'm so sorry, dear." The girl put on some some lilt into her words, returning some of the hostility the boy gave her. She wasn't entirely sure whether the boy had been trying to mock her or not, but his introduction had certainly been unusual. And rude.

Glancing up at the luggage rack overhead, she hugged the heavy trunk against her chest. Calculating how much strength she'd need, she finally stretched her arms upward and rose onto her tiptoes. But alas, for a growing girl who stood at only four feet five inches tall, she couldn't reach it, not even a little. Her arms tremble under the trunk's weight. She grunted and tried again, lifting herself onto the very tips of her toes as if that would somehow make a difference.

Curse you, height.

She silently prayed that the boy remained as uninterested in her as before and hadn't noticed her unfortunate and embarrassing struggle. Her grip slipped and the trunk dropped onto her head with a dull thud. Hissing softly in pain, she quickly caught it before it could tumble to the floor, hugging it tightly once more as she tried to think of another way to get her luggage onto the rack.

Pleased with himself and certain he had managed to get rid of the girl when her smile dropped, Nicandro exhaled the breath he’d been holding ever since she had decided to barge into his compartment. At any second, she’d leave, discouraged by his words.

One, two, three seconds. …Well?

Loud boys ran through the hallway, mercilessly trampling and pushing away everything in their path, forcing the girl deeper inside the compartment. He couldn’t blame her, this seemed much like a refuge, but that didn’t mean that it changed the fact that she had clearly ignored his wish for an undisturbed train ride. When the door clicked shut behind her, he considered opening it again to shove her back outside.

“I’m not particularly fond of sharing either, girl”, Nicandro replied cooly, his eyes dark with irritation as he glared up at her. It hadn’t been a suggestion for her to leave. How dare she simply ignore his protest? She had some nerves. When she shot his 'dear' back at him, he almost choked. “My, I can’t stand you already. What cursed luck I have”, he grumbled, just loud enough for her to hear what he said.

He was going to have to tolerate her if he didn’t want to start a fight. And honestly, if this got physical, he knew who would lose. And it would not be her. The best strategy was likely to ignore her and pretend she didn’t exist. That way she wouldn’t bother him too much.

His plan was ruined immediately by her trying to hoist her trunk up into the luggage rack with far more noise and effort than he was able to tolerate today. He ground his teeth together as his patience wore thinner by the second. Pinching his nose, he deliberately turned away. But as she kept trying, he couldn’t help but glance her way to observe her struggle a bit. It was a sardonic kind of enjoyment. She was clearly not anywhere near tall enough for it. Just then, she lost the grip on the trunk and it bumped straight onto her head. This was absurd.

A laugh bubbled up in Nicandro’s chest and he had to bite down on his lip hard to keep it contained. His mouth twitched and he quickly covered it with a loose hand, turning his face away sharply to look out of the window and at the oh so interesting landscape. With a faked cough, he tried to regain his composure, but the image was now stuck in his head. He bit down harder and dug his nails into his lower arm. That was the girl’s karma for joining him.

Merlin, you’re incompetent. You’re not going to grow just because you try really, really hard.” He cleared his throat and tried to look more annoyed than amused, getting up from his seat with a roll of his eyes.

“Move,” he ordered, his hands reaching for the trunk, “before you continue to go on my nerves by grunting and jumping till the end of the ride.” Once Nicandro had managed to pull it from her arms, his own posture sagged heavily under the weight before he could even lift it properly. He let out a curse, setting the trunk back down on the floor, arms and pride aching already. This must look ridiculous. Folding under a trunk. “What do you have in there? Bricks? A library? This was not going to work. How had she even managed to hold it up for so long? She must be stronger than she looked and than he had given her credit for. “Don’t just stand there! Stop gawking and lift it so I can get it up in the rack.”

Aurora's cheeks warmed at the boy's quiet snicker.

Oh my god, this is so humiliating.

"Shut up..." she grumbled under her breath.
When he stood from his seat, Aurora glanced at him curiously. Is he actually going to help me? Up close, she could finally get a proper look at him. He was fairly tall, with dark brown eyes and messy black hair. He wore the kind of permanently bored, annoyed expression that made Aurora shivers.

"Move, before you get on my nerves by grunting and jumping around until the end of the ride."
She opened her mouth, ready to protest with something along the lines of, I don't need your help. I'm perfectly capable of handling this myself. But... she did need help. Desperately. So she snapped her mouth shut and merely grumbled as the boy pulled the trunk from her arms.

The moment he took its full weight, he nearly folded in half, following the trunk toward the floor. Aurora blinked in surprise. It looked almost cartoonish, as if she had just handed him Thor's Mjölnir instead of an ordinary trunk. The sight was so unexpected that a laugh escaped her lips as the boy struggled to keep it from crashing down.

She probably shouldn't laugh at someone who was trying to help her. But it was really funny watching the cold, unimpressed boy suddenly grunting under the weight of her luggage.

"I'm so sorry. Is it too heavy?" she asked, unable to keep the playful note from creeping into her voice. "What do you have in here?" he complained, breathing a little harder as he tried to lift it again, only to fail. "Bricks? A library?" "What?? I packed the same stuff as you and everyone else!" Aurora shot back. "I don't bring no bricks."

"Don't just stand there! Help me lift it so I can get it into the rack." Letting out one last chuckle, Aurora finally stepped in. "Alright, alright. Move over a little. I'll lift it up, and then you push it in, okay?"

She bent her knees and let out a strained huff as she hoisted the trunk with all her strength. With the stranger helping, it became much easier, though easy was still far from the right word.

It was probably a funny sight, two kids, completely different to each other, working together just to wrestle one stubborn trunk into the overhead rack. It was to the point where Aurora had taken off her shoes and climb onto the seat. With trembling arms and aching shoulders, they gave one final push.

And the trunk slid into place.

Aurora, sweat already beading on her forehead, broke into a wide grin as she admired it sitting neatly in the rack. "Yes!" she cheered before turning to the boy. "Thank you so much, stranger!" Her eyes sparkled with genuine delight as she grinned at him. "We make a pretty good team, no? You having that height and me having these muscles."She chuckled as she joked.

The girl, buzzing with happiness dropped down to the floor and slipped into her shoes again. "Now that's out of the way, we can enjoy our journey." She stepped to the window overlooking the scenery outside. The girl sits opposite to the spot that was previously occupied by the boy. "Wow.. this is so amazing."

This was anything but funny. Nicandro bit the inside of his cheek hard when the girl actually had the audacity to laugh at him being unable to manage the weight of the trunk properly. There was no way a mere stranger could make him feel so self-conscious within seconds. His stomach twisted hard, his jaw clenched, his eyes squeezed shut and he had to restrain himself from yelling. “If you want me to help you, you better stop laughing immediately,” he tried to growl at her, but it came out more like a breathless pant. Despite his threat, he was determined to finish this mission to soothe his pride. How idiotic it would look if he stopped now!

When they had finally managed to store the girl’s trunk away safely, Nicandro let out a heavy sigh of relief, rolling the tension from his shoulders. A bit surprised by her enthusiasm, he simply stared at her and scratched the back of his head, unsure of what to say or do. That wasn’t the usual effect he had on people, nor the one he had intended for her! Well, if he was honest with himself, and it made him quite pissed to admit this, it was a nice change of reaction. He couldn’t really remember when he had last made another person beam this bright, except maybe for his sister Anwen, but that didn’t really count. Usually, frowns, tears, polite yet tense smiles and shouting accompanied his interactions like a best friend that stubbornly refused to leave his side.

And she had even thanked him! Without sarcasm on top of that. Did she really think he helped her out of altruism? Kindness? As if. If only she knew…

“Stranger?”, he huffed before introducing himself: “I’m Nicandro. Henderson, with an emphasis on his surname, as if that would settle everything. He let the silence sit expectingly, waiting for her to recognise him. Surely she’s heard of his family before. Then, he followed her with his eyes as she cheerfully jumped towards the window and saw how she put her shoes back on which she had taken off before climbing the seat earlier to avoid dirtying it. She unexpectedly had basic manners.

For her, this was likely the best day of her life. Face pressed to the glass of the window and dropping down in a seat with such an easy amount of joy. Naive, likely. The world was much more complicated than a successful trunk-mission and a trip to Hogwarts. Would she still be this happy in school? When would reality catch up to her? What were her parents like, to have her grow up so bubbly and sunny? Not that it mattered anyway. It was merely a miracle how a single person could have that much optimism and energy while he was trying hard not to fall asleep right here and now. Slowly, Nicandro moved to sit back down, now choosing the seat that was as far away from the girl as possible, directly by the door.

“No way, you find this amazing? A bit of landscape flying past your face? That’s so impressive. Surely you’ve seen grass and fields before.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eyes, trying to catch her reaction. She was a very curious being that made no sense to him. “Maybe the trunk hit your head so hard that it damaged it. Your state must be much worse than I had assumed. Loss of memory and intelligence or something.”

The sarcasm in his voice was harsh, but as far as he could tell, the girl wasn’t particularly affected by it anyway. He could bite how much he wanted and still hasn’t gotten a reaction that lasted for more than a couple of seconds before she already moved on.

“I wouldn’t be surprised. Heard that that happens much more often than people assume,” he added, crossing his arms behind his head and leaning back while scanning her head to toe, frowning again at her horribly cut hair and messed up clothes that hardly fit. “You should get checked by a healer, just to be sure. We wouldn’t want for this to have dire consequences and lasting effects, no?” She would probably even think he’s actually worried. Merlin. He could only pray that this train ride would be over soon.

"Stranger? I'm Nicandro. Henderson."

The heavy emphasis on his surname made it sound important, as though Aurora should tremble at the name alone. But, because of how dumb she is and unaware of social cues, she smiled widely and offer her name as well like nothing unusual happened. "Ah. I'm Aurora Coleman."

She had little to no connection with the magical world, so names like the Henderson family meant nothing to her. Aurora took his introduction as nothing more than an attempt to start over a new friendship.

"No way. You find this amazing? A bit of landscape flying past your face? That's so impressive," the boy said haughtily. Aurora gasped in disbelief before gesturing dramatically toward the window, as though presenting a great masterpiece. the will smith meme lol"It is amazing! How could you possibly sleep through the journey when you could be looking at all this?"

She had noticed that he had deliberately chosen a seat far away from her, making her frown slightly. "Surely you've seen grass and fields before." "Well, of course I have. My grandparents own a farm." She turned back to the window, studying the endless landscape rushing past. Of course she'd seen fields, trees, and rolling hills before, but somehow this felt different. Towering mountains stretched into the distance, and every so often the sea came into view. Complete with warm afternoon sunlight, it looked as though it had been taken straight from a painting. Maybe it was because this was the first time she'd ever left home, her first journey away from her family. Everything simply felt... different.

"But, uh... this is my first time riding a train." Suddenly remembering the fact, she rubbed her hands together nervously. Her feet, unable to reach the floor, swung back and forth beneath the seat as she glanced over at him. At least he' a nice distraction from the slight homesickness kicking in.

"Maybe the trunk hit your head so hard that it damaged it. Your state must be much worse than I had assumed. Loss of memory and intelligence or something." Aurora's cheeks turned pink again as she remembered her embarrassing antics. She reached up to gingerly pat the top of her head, just to make sure nothing was actually wrong.

"My head is perfectly fine, thank you very much for your concern." She huffed and crossed her arms, pouring as much sarcasm into her voice as she could. Looking up, she noticed him already assessing her from head to toe, making her suddenly self-conscious about her clothes. Compared to his clean, neat outfit, Aurora looked almost like a beggar. Her sweater a bit baggy, its colors faded from years of wear, and the stitches holding together parts of her skirt looked as though they were barely hanging on.

Maybe I shouldn't have worn my favorite shirt today... She absentmindedly fiddled with a loose thread on her sleeve as unease crept under his stare. Before she could dwell on it any longer, he spoke again.

"You should get checked by a healer, just to be sure. We wouldn't want this to have any dire consequences or lasting effects, no?" Aurora blinked. She knew he meant to mock her, but she couldn't resist teasing him back.

"Well, if you're that worried about me, I'll visit a healer first thing tomorrow." Her lips curled into her signature gummy smile, her voice light and playful. Of course he wasn't genuinely concerned for her well-being, but the way he kept bringing it up almost made it sound like he was."Don't waste your tears on me, Nic. I'll be alright," she added with a soft chuckle. She doesn't realize she had just called his name properly instead using a short nickname.

She felt like she had to ask more to know about this grumpy, rude boy. "Have you ridden a train before?" Her fingers skimmed across the plush red cushion beneath her. "You must have, right? That's why you're so unimpressed with the view."

The boy also seemed to be losing interest in the conversing with her, but Aurora pressed on anyway. "Are you looking forward for Hogwarts? I heard there's like this thing where they place you in different dorms?"

Aurora Coleman. He scanned his brain hard for the name, scratching at each part of his knowledge stored about famous wizards, but he failed to find anything vaguely sounding like Coleman. Great. Likely some muggle-born or low-family half-blood he was dealing with. That would also offer an explanation for her lack of a reaction to his name. Wonderful. This kept getting better.

When she gestured towards the window, telling him about how her grandparents own a farm, he clicked his tongue. Well, that made lots of sense, from her appearance all the way to her strange behaviour. Maybe the clocks ticked differently surrounded by dirt, cows and stinky animal poop.

"Well, if you're that worried about me, I'll visit a healer first thing tomorrow." Her smile told him that she actually did understand he had been joking. "Don't waste your tears on me, Nic. I'll be alright.” Nicandro’s eyebrows rose at once, his forehead creasing with confused exasperation. “What did you just call me? Nic? Sorry, did you not hear my name correctly? It’s Nicandro, Ni-can-dro. Or do you wish me to call you…” He attempted to come up with the most awful name possible to derived from Aurora Coleman, “Rara? Coco? Almost sounds perfect for a pet named by a six year old child.” Was it typical for farm-people to use nicknames within two seconds of meeting someone? In his family, it certainly wasn’t. It was a form of disrespect. Not even his mother or father called him Nic. The closest thing had been little brother or Andro, but that had come from his sister. Which was an entirely different story!

The girl jumped quickly from one topic to the next. Could she not see he clearly didn’t care to keep the conversation going? Most people would’ve gotten the hints long ago. Her commitment was almost admirable, if it wasn’t so idiotic. He twisted his rings on his fingers before letting his eyes slip shut.

"Have you ridden a train before? You must have, right? That's why you're so unimpressed with the view." What a strange question! Of course he had been on a train before. “Who hasn’t? Did you live under a rock? But yes,” he answered simply, “I have been on a train before. And I assure you, it was always quite disappointing. At least I got to sit alone then.”

“Are you looking forward for Hogwarts? I heard there's like this thing where they place you in different dorms?”

“Are you always this talkative?” The sentence slipped from his mouth as a whisper before he could think about it.

Could she truly be so socially inept that she missed all his cues, or was she too extroverted and one of those annoying people that had to fill every silence with unnecessary small talk? He had never been able to stand them. What did she even get out of it? It wasn’t like they were ever going to interact again, Nicandro was sure of that. He’d steer clear of this weird little ray of sunshine the second they arrived at Hogwarts. Supposedly, the school was big enough to avoid each other well enough. Unless misfortune continued to cling to him and put them in class together; or worse. He could already see her skipping towards him with that ugly bright smile. Nope. He was allergic to sunshines. People, mostly. But especially sunshines.

“As you can see, I can barely contain my excitement,” he answered drily. “All those lovely children invading my personal space.” He looked her directly in the eyes. “Like you, for example. And the loud stinky boys you mentioned that left you in here with me will also be there. Isn’t that absolute horror?” He didn’t even want to imagine what this was going to be like.

“Different dorms? Do you happen to mean the houses, or are you referring to where you are going to sleep, stuck with who knows what kind of students? I do hope there won’t be any rats or bugs sharing your bed trying to eat your flesh off of your bones at night. Which house do you want to end up in anyway? Or do you have no ambitions and are a lost cause?”

Why was he even letting her trick him into conversation? His parents had always preached about the significance of names and blood, and if she truly was of muggle-heritage… That wasn’t at all the company he was to keep.

"Are you always this talkative?" Nicandro shot back, clearly annoyed. Aurora hadn't planned on bothering him for the entire ride to Hogwarts. She was just feeling a little nervous and needed someone to talk to. "Sorry. I'm just feeling nervous." she admitted awkwardly. "As you can see, I can barely contain my excitement, all those lovely children invading my personal space." The boy looked Aurora directly in the eyes. "Like you, for example. And those loud stinky boys you mentioned who left you in here with me will also be there. Isn’t that an absolute horror?"

Thinking over his words, Aurora let her legs swing back and forth beneath her seat. "Well, it's nice to meet different individuals and make new friends. Even if the person has an awful personality." She emphasized the word awful while looking straight at him. "You can always learn new things about them." Aurora had always believed that first impressions weren't enough to judge someone. As long as they weren't hurting anyone, she refused to think of them as a bad person. That said, she doesn't think the boys that turned her away as evil, because they're only boys being boys, she merely feel annoyed at their action.

"Different dorms? Do you happen to mean the houses, or are you referring to where you are going to sleep, stuck with who knows what kind of students?" She smiled brightly as he corrected her. "Ah, yes! Houses. That's what I meant." His last comment completely went over her head. Her mother had told her about her own time at Hogwarts, but that had been years ago, and Aurora's memory of those stories had grown fuzzy.

"I do hope there won’t be any rats or bugs sharing your bed, trying to eat the flesh off your bones at night." Aurora blinked, her face paling slightly at the imagery, her hands instinctively wrapped around her arms as if shielding herself. "Is that... a magical world thing?" she whispered dumbly before shuddering. "Do magical bugs eat human flesh..? I didn't know magic could be this creepy."

"Which house do you want to end up in anyway? Or do you have no ambitions and are simply a lost cause?" Aurora frowned at his assumption. She hated to admit it, but he had hit the mark. She had gone into this journey completely blind, with no real plans and she'd only agreed to enroll because it was her father's wish. She had no idea what awaited her during her years at Hogwarts. Hell, she hadn't even expected to meet someone like him.

The girl huffed. "Of course I have ambitions and I have my own goals." Running a hand through her hair, she think of an answer that would prove him wrong. "Aha! I want to be in Hufflepuff. Yep, that's the one." She smiled proudly, pleased she'd remembered the name. Her mother had been sorted into Hufflepuff, so maybe she would be too. After all, the apple didn't fall far from the tree, right?

"What about you? Is there a specific house you want to get into? You seem like you already know your way around Hogwarts." She smiled as he continued to engage the conversation, even if only begrudgingly. She could tell he was annoyed and probably wanted the conversation to end, but she was glad he kept replying anyway.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the compartment door before it slid open. "Anything off the trolley, dears?" an elderly woman in a dress asked warmly as she pushed a cart piled high with colorful sweets. Aurora perked up at the sight. "Are those candies?" She immediately stood and walked past Nicandro toward the door.

"Do you have one of those Chocolate Frogs, miss?" she asked eagerly, eyes darting across the selection. She spotted stacks of green cakes, pumpkin pasties, and all sorts of unfamiliar candies. "Can I have two?" She handed over enough sickles for the chocolates and smiled. "Thank you, miss." Aurora studied the two small boxes with fascination and shook it a little. Is there really a frog in here?

As she returned to the compartment, she smiled at Nicandro. "I know about Chocolate Frogs from a friend of mine. Here, have one. I bought an extra." She held one of the boxes out to him, waiting for him to take it. "You can collect the cards. My friends back in the neighborhood collect cards too. They're called Pokemon cards, though." She had started rambling again, a habit she always slipped into whenever she got excited.

Carefully opening the box, she gasped as a literal chocolate frog sprang out. "Woah!" The frog leaped with surprising strength onto the window, squeezed through the small opening, and hopped out of the moving train before she could react. Aurora stared after it, mouth hanging open in awe. "That is so cool." She giggled at the frog unexpected escape. Looking down, she examined the hexagon shaped card in her hands. Andros the Invincible. "I got this guy who looks like a video game character." She held up the card with a huge grin. "What did you get?"

"Well, it's nice to meet different individuals and make new friends. Even if the person has an awful personality."

For a second, Nicandro didn’t even realise she meant him. When it clicked, he snorted, rolling his eyes at her. “Awful personality? That’s very harsh, Aurora. You might not be any better then. But I suppose I should still feel deeply honoured and grateful that you still deem me worthy enough to talk to this much.”

As Aurora didn’t notice he was joking about the flesh-eating bugs, his eyes widened with disbelief. There was no way anyone was this stupid and gullible, right? He watched her go pale and shrink slightly. "Is that... a magical world thing? Do magical bugs eat human flesh..?"

This was almost comical. Feeling the need to make this situation even more funny, he leaned in and gestured for her to do the same. “Did no one tell you the whole truth about Hogwarts? Well, you’re lucky to have met me, then.” He lowered his voice to a whisper, staring directly at her. It wasn’t his fault she believed him. And it totally gave him the right to use that for his amusement just a little more.

“It’s a very scary thing to think about. The school is a home to many dangerous creatures and beasts. Be careful to always check under your bed before you go to sleep. Otherwise… Let’s just say, they have sharp teeth. There are massive spiders for example. Down in the forbidden forest. That’s why it’s forbidden to go there. But sometimes, on particularly boring days, they crave the flesh of young little children and,” he added a dramatic pause, “crawl all the way to the castle, searching for an unsuspecting victim. Bam.” His hands clapped together. “But that only happens every year or so. So you probably won’t have to worry.”

When Aurora answered the question about the houses with 'Hufflepuff', Nicandro couldn’t help but smile toxoidly. “Oh, really?” He raised his eyebrows in feigned disbelief. “I would’ve never guessed. That doesn’t fit you at all.”

"What about you?”

He didn’t have to think about his reply for one second. Leaning back into his seat, he crossed his arms. “Slytherin of course. My entire family went there. And I can’t wait to torment little children and put fear to my name.”

The second the knock came at their compartment door, Nicandro sat up straight immediately, looking a bit like a deer in the headlights. He was ready to yell at whoever wanted to enter that their compartment was full, and he was very sure that Aurora would happily invite them in, so he put on his best evil face. When he spotted that it was just the trolley lady, he relaxed. “Anything off the trolley, dears?” While he was still processing the offered sweets, Aurora was already cheerfully on her feet, almost attacking the poor woman with her enthusiasm.

“Not for me.” The stuff was overpriced and he wouldn’t fill his stomach with it before the great feast in awaiting them at Hogwarts. He watched Aurora fuss over the chocolate frogs with curiosity and noted how she used polite phrasing like 'please' and 'thank you'. The more time he was forced to spend near her, the less repulsive she seemed, even if her talking so much was still anything but pleasant. His gaze drifted off to the window.

Maybe this didn’t have to suck that much. Maybe he was making life unnecessarily difficult. He could try being a bit more patient and considerate. Not everyone had an older sibling who had already informed them about everything awaiting them at Hogwarts. And if he was really honest, he had to admit that all of this was actually kind of nerve-wracking.

“Here, have one."

Snapping out of his thoughts, he turned his head back to Aurora to find her standing over him with an extended hand. First, he looked up at her with bewilderment. Then, he properly looked at the chocolate frog she was trying to offer him. Why? What was her reason? Him being so rude to her? Surely not. What did she hope to gain from this? No one was generous enough to give away things without expecting something in return, and Nicandro wasn’t foolish enough to accept a deal with the devil.

“My friends back in the neighborhood collect cards too. They're called Pokemon cards, though."

Very hesitantly, he wrapped his fingers around the box and picked it up, trying to avoid skin-to-skin contact. She had paid from her own money. Not accepting a gift was considered rude, but he didn’t really have anything to trade and he really didn’t want to be in her debt. So he offered a reason for her gifting it to him before she could come up with the idea that he could owe her. “For helping with the trunk? Alright, then.”

Listening to her words, he frowned slightly. “Your neighbour collects what? Pokeyman? What in Merlin‘s name even is that?”

He watched as her attempt to be cautious with the box failed since her frog took a leap of faith straight out of the window before she could even react. Clearly inexperienced. Pathetic. It was a mystery to him how she could possibly laugh about that incident. That had been a very expensive investment for nothing. When she showed him her card, he leaned in hard to get a proper look at it and squinted. Then, he took it from her grasp and held it up to his face closely, moving it back and forth until it jumped into focus. “I got this guy who looks like a video game character."

Merlin. This girl spoke in nothing but riddles. “Video game character? Do I even want to ask?” It became more and more evident that they weren’t from the same world. Under his breath, he added something about muggle weirdness. Nicandro bit his lip to keep from saying anything more venomous. Lecturing about the pureness of blood would only make this even more uncomfortable. Neither of them could simply leave the compartment. Even if, he wasn’t sure he’d find one without mixed bloods. With that in mind, he mustered all his courage, closed his eyes and desperately pretended not to know that she was clearly related to at least one muggle.

A bit reluctantly, he opened his own box. The frog leaped out, hoping to also get away. It barely even started it’s jump when Nicandro already captured it in his palms. For a moment, he contemplated about the frog Aurora had lost. “I dislike eating in front of people when they don’t eat anything themselves. It makes me feel like a complete glutton.“

After giving the chocolate to her, he glanced into the box to find out which card he had gotten. It was a horrendous sight. An ugly man, whose skin was a sickly, nasty green-gray-ish color, with a massive slouch, messy hair and a simple brown cloak that was far too big for him stared back at the boy who grimaced. Was this some sort of joke?

Chauncey Oldridge, first known victim of Dragon Pox.

“I actually don’t have that card yet,” Nicandro mumbled, examining it more closely. “Disgusting.” All of the sudden, he cleared his throat, a vicious idea forming in his mind. He peeled the card from the box and held it up next to Aurora’s head. “This is genuinely scary.” Slowly, he turned it around so that Aurora could also see. “It literally looks exactly like you. The resemblance is shocking.”
