Only days ago had she returned from her ancestral home, returned from her hiding place, and she felt unsafe. Very unsafe. Vigilance hence was the only option. Even in such mundane tasks as retrieving her quills.

Eugenia walked out of her last class of the day with a bunch of students, chattering and complaining about the bunch of homework they had been given. She however didn’t say a word; after all the time away from her beloved albeit quite strange institution, she only wanted to learn without bounds. Sometimes, she herself wondered why she had been placed in Hufflepuff. But maybe it was for the best.

The steady sound of footsteps told her it was safe, no one attacked in a crowd. Especially a pure blood when the crowd also consisted of Slytherins, the houses had had a joint class together. Maybe her logic was flawed, yes; maybe she was way too paranoid to even be back. But how could she miss out on such an opportunity? Deep inside her, she knew that no new name would change her fate. If she were to fight, she would.

By now, she had already managed to go up to the third floor, soon reaching the fourth and entering in a random classroom. Eugenia then went near one of the desks towards the back and looked underneath. Aha. There were her quills. Scrivenshaft’s had fine quills, but she was much more comfortable writing with those she brought for home. She reached down and found the three quills that had fallen out of her bag. When she had realised it, she wasn’t that far down the nearest staircase, but she wanted to be early to class and the break was ending. Besides, no one touched them anyways.

Pleased with herself, Eugenia packed up her quills and placed them in their designated place in her bag. Her beautiful wand holster attracted her attention for a moment, and so she admired it. But the thought of vigilance soon prevailed. She mustn’t walk distracted, she’s in danger. So she shoved the thought with much less gentleness compared to how she stashed her quills, and closed her bag. Walking out of the room with her head held high was a practice that came easy now.

Eugenia’s mind wandered to her application in the NOBLE club. She had missed the first meeting by a long shot. It was back in March and it was nearing the end of May. Gods, how much she had missed. But she had managed to attract the attention of the founder, Tes Cadell. Her fate remained to be decided in a few days by the entirety of the circle. While Tes had appreciated her qualities, Eugenia was told this was not an easy decision to make. Hence, she needed the approval of the circle. And Eugenia, wishing she could be accepted in such a group agreed.

Really, it was protection, a society to prove her status and an opportunity to warn her peers and perhaps make that pureblood debut all heirs do. She was a Smyrnidi now, for all she knew.

She was promptly slammed into a wall by a body, albeit smaller than hers, falling on her. The duellist stumbled and drew a hand to steady herself. Speak of the devil, it was really miss Cadell. The hit was accidental, hence not rough at all. Still, Eugenia knew she had hit her elbow in a weird angle, although it didn't hurt much now.

Μικρός είναι ο κόσμος, χμ; Άου, δυνατή είναι.1 for a moment, it was as though she had forgotten how to speak English, her head spun. But she recovered with the elegance of a chaser and looked at the first year. My my, miss Cadell. Are you alright Tes? That was certainly a hit. It’s certainly a small world; you happened to bump into me while I was pondering my place in the pure blood world. How has been your day? She finished with a polished smile, polite but not particularly warm. Her tone had less warmth than before being pulled out, but it was one appropriate to the social circles. She extended a hand to try and steady them both. Seems the world wanted her to communicate today.

1: translation: Such a small world, hm? Ouch, she’s strong.

The impact barely moved me.
I didn’t step back. I let the silence sit for half a second longer than needed, my eyes lifting to meet hers.
Eugenia Smyrnidi.

My gaze flickered briefly to her elbow, the angle, the way she held herself just a fraction too controlled for it to be entirely painless. Everything Smyrnidi did was noted, that was no doubt. Her unique situation meant that everything was filed.

“Smyrnidi.” I greeted, "I'm fine" I said after her statement, unbothered, "You should be more careful" I pointed out.
I didn’t take her hand immediately.

Instead, I let my eyes linger on her face, analysing her once again.
She spoke well. Too well. Polished, deliberate, every word placed like a chess piece already thinking five moves ahead. It would impress most but wouldn't foul me- could be a way to get in. But I was not going back from my decision, letting her a chance with the circle was already most generous of me.
It didn’t impress me.

Only then did I place my hand in hers, briefly. My grip was firm, controlled, and gone just as quickly.

“You’ve been thinking a lot about NOBLE” I outlined. It wasn't a question- I could just tell, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Because it was. I made sure to lower my voice to not alert other students- its existence was pretty much unknown, "Remind me how you found out again?" I asked

I shifted my bag higher on my shoulder with my posture straight, "How has been your day? she asked

“My day”[color] I added after a small pause almost as an afterthought “has been productive"

Under the scrutinising glare of miss Cadell, Eugenia didn’t falter. Not that faltering was an option per se. She would look at the girl opposite to her with a softer, but equally scrutinising glance. Their eyes connected almost immediately and the Greek knew that Tes had seen her elbow twisted. There goes the first part of this scheme. Perfect. At least it was the least influential.

What Tes didn’t know was that Eugenia wasn’t trying to pry her way in. She was naturally an eloquent speaker when needed. The two Karageorgiadi, now Smyrnidi sisters, had similar, yet different educations. The elder, dear Eugenia, was given the education of an heir. Politics, mind games, persuasion, how to work things out. But her natural temperament made her the academic sister, who would quickly absorb and apply knowledge. Her sister however was the performer, the socialite. She was more extroverted than the heiress and she was the one that tried to charm her way. Since the family troubles started early, she received similar education to her sister, just in case, but she was also trained in the classic communications and charms.

The plan the sisters had was to continue the businesses together, while also having separate jobs. They would use their influential position for leverage, while also living their one life. Perhaps one of the few cases where siblings opted to work together than to fight for the seat of power. And those plans were only solidified after the hiding period.

But in the end, they were both polished with their ways. And Eugenia, being a natural perfectionist, sought to display this as much as she could. She knew she was being watched. Not just from Cadell due to her position, but from others as well.

So she continued in the same manner. She noticed the Slytherin’s comment on being more careful. Well, it was Tes who fell into her, what was she supposed to do? Become a seer and anticipate every single impact with divine intuition? Biting back a sarcastic remark, she marginally nodded, trying to seem unbothered as well. Tes hadn’t hit the wall and the impact hadn’t shaken her, and Eugenia didn’t want to seem weak. Least now of all times. “You too, Cadell.

She felt the controlled, strained movements of the first year opposed her, giving her the urge to tut, yet refraining from doing so knowing she was under observation. Cadell’s attitude was far colder than expected, and it all felt genuinely wrong. It was as off the other girl held her head so high up, she thought it would never touch the ground. But even having pure gold blood wouldn’t save you, and Eugenia darn well knew. So much for being chased through walls and living in absolute chaos for a year and a half. But even though Tes might seem cold and unapproachable, the Greek was not afraid. How could she be, when she had too much on the line since the start…?

These thoughts would go unnoticed by Tes, because Eugenia’s expression remained unchanged; polished yet not stoic stone. And the first year made a genuine comment. “An astute observation. Yes, I have.” And when she was asked why? She could just lie. Or maybe say half a truth. If she dug herself too deep in lies, the whole thing would be much more difficult. So she chose to reply measuredly, perhaps a little more superficially than intended.

You see, after certain circumstances, I was pulled out. I guess it wasn’t that quiet when the Hufflepuff quidditch team had flyers all over the school stating my absence for applicants. But upon my return, I heard both whispers of this club, however I also got informed about its existence by my parents. Word has travelled through the high social circles and, if I had been on campus in time for the first meeting, I would have been largely satisfied. My return was unfortunately long after that date, just days ago. Yet, in my opinion, the school has changed largely. Odd how many professors leave hm? I understand if it were survival instincts, although in my opinion, sometimes keeping yourself unchanged is safer than running.

Eugenia usually didn’t talk that much. But with her answer, she deliberately provided information to Cadell she needed to know for this to work. And to the heiress’ comment, she responded as well. “How so?
