Ha! The day surely belonged to Harvey as he really stuck it to this giant of a first year. Not that he was much of a bootlicker and Headmaster Lear always seemed a bit out of the reach to the boy even if he wanted curry favor. He listened with smug satisfaction as Solomon chastised the part-giant. It would have completed the diss just to cooly walk away, but Hogwarts was not like other schools. No, this center of learning had a way of drawing trouble that must put it on the list as one of the most dangerous places in the whole damned wizarding world!
The scene around the quickly exploded into pure chaos. There is no Hogwarts event without fire. Who the hell decided it was a good idea to teach eleven years old how to magically produce fire?! Smoke would begin to fill the air and terror would follow. Angry insects spilled forth from the debris and bang to attack children. Monster came trampling out next and students resorted to ripping snakes in half with their bare hands! Harvey's first instinct was to run. The boy had proven himself no coward, but trusting your flight or fight response was essential to survival. When the world erupts around you, leave, but a crashing behind him had him spin on the spot.
Harvey's wand was at the ready. At least Hogwarts had taught him that much. He looked around for the Headmaster, but he was suddenly no where to be found. Had Solomon abandoned them? No time for questions now as the giant first year stood before him. Harvey almost had to look straight up to meet the other boy's gaze and it was clear that he meant to harm. The spit on the ground was enough for the part-goblin to start blasting, but when the giant made a grab for him there was no hesitation. "Take an English lesson you big, smelly bastard! FLIPENDO!"

In retrospect, Erast should have known better. He should have known better than to lose his bearings and throw himself into a task amidst this surge of conflicting, confusing bitterness, because it made him do stupid things– like tearing apart a potentially intentional, dangerous stone structure.
Aged, moss-covered stone shifted stiffly beneath the shears, and as a hole formed, a shear blade hit something underneath. TING! Rusted metal hit something with resonance. Something like glass. Erast frowned. Why would a material like glass be in there?
Against better judgement, gloved hands and shear blades pried open the top layer of the cairn, revealing several vials of what appeared to be mud-encrusted goals resting in the centre. The glass was fogged with grime, almost impossible to peek into the contents within if any. Unease stirred in his chest. Had a member of staff been conducting an experiment, or brewing a complex potion? For such an intentional protective structure to be built around these vials, hidden behind yards of overgrown vines and gnarled branches… Someone had to have planted these here with intent, and it certainly wasn't their place to uncover it.
Erast stood. Something wasn't right. “Noxley–” He turned around, just in time to witness a well-cast scourgify whisk away the grime and mud from the cairn and the bottles within. A mysterious dark mist danced within the vials’ confines. For a split second, nothing was wrong. Then, as soon as light hit the glass, the opaque mist writhed, as if in pain. In a blink, the smoke dissipated into nothingness in the sealed goals. Well, that wasn't good.
“Look what good thing you did, Mr Hard Worker,” Erast scoffed, smacking Leo on the arm. He covered his mouth and nose with his sleeve, afraid that the spell had somehow punctured holes in the flask and that dark smoke had seeped out into the air as poison.
Then, screams. Panic. He lifted his head, only to be met with utter chaos. A raging fire had swept the forest and set the trees ablaze, with students in the distance being swallowed under blankets of fire. Students were collapsed under attacks of unknown and arachnid causes, and when he turned, the blurry, yet vivid sight of the largest spiders he had ever seen greeted him from afar with his peers collapsing underfoot.
“我靠–” Erast hissed. He slammed the rock he had removed back onto the cairn, snatching out his wand from his inner pocket and gripping it at the ready. He nudged Leo and himself back to back, putting a distance between them and the cairn. “You, me– Out, now.” The brunet muttered, eyes fixed on the horrific creatures and the absolute bedlam just kilometers away. Before Erast could stop himself, impulse added, “I love our lovely bond, but we should continue bonding alive, right? We're not close enough to die together yet, Noxley.” Adrenaline burned in his blood. Shame and social consequences came secondary to dying at a stupid weekend detention with a shameless guy.

Beautiful Banner by the amazing Dido Bleaklane! FC by the awesome Cassandra Tarot!
@Lauren Vanes Note, Rosalyn does not fully leave the forest yet!
Rosie was waiting with bated breath, as she saw the gears turning in Lauren's head, only able to imagine all of what she was thinking in the moment. Rosie herself felt many different things…
Fear was probably the most prominent emotion at the time. She was stuck in the Forbidden Forest, where it was dark and scary and there were who knows all the sorts of monsters all around. She was absolutely terrified, but not willing to leave Lauren all alone out there.
She was also in a bit of pain, between the various small cuts and such from walking through the Forest filled with rocks and thorns and the headache plaguing her skull from the sudden influx of memories from earlier that day. The fact that her mind had been tampered with frightened her way more than she would have liked to admit, because it was too easy for Lauren's siblings to go in and change her thoughts of one of her closest friends.
Another emotion present in her heart was guilt. She felt so guilty for believing, even for a moment, that Lauren would hurt her, have it in her to cause Rosie pain. Lauren didn't deserve that, she was already dealing with so much with her horrible family and all of her stress at school, that Rosie shouldn't have been the person to add to those feelings.
But, of course, she was. She couldn't see past the lies told by the poor girl's siblings, she couldn't think for herself, she instead was susceptible to the erasure of her memory. Rosalyn Willows, friendly and bubbly as she was, believed that her own friend would end her life, and all she could feel was the shame of that. And all she could do was hope that Lauren would accept the apology, and they could safely leave together.
But, in a turn of events that Rosie had not expected at all, Lauren did the exact opposite.
The girl's words echoed in her ears, almost instantly bringing the relatively fragile eleven-year-old to tears. She was only able to bite them back because she needed to look at Lauren's face, to see if she really meant what she was saying.
And, if her face wasn't lying, she meant every single word.
"Lauren, please sto…" she began to say, feeling stupid as Lauren had called her, unable to find the words to say. But, clearly, the other girl had none of the same problems, and kept going with her vile words.
She listened as she was accused of lying, hating Lauren, being stupid, doubting her, and not caring about her friend.
"It was genuine! I promise, something is wrong! I wouldn't lie to you, I promise!" she said, hating the desperation in her own voice but unable to sound like anything but the terrified child that she was, losing her close friend as she stood there, unable to stop the chasm forming between the two of their hearts.
Then, she heard the words. The three words that could bring Rosie, the people-pleaser, desperate to be loved, unable to tolerate rejection in any form, to her knees. Well, not literally, because the floor of the Forest was outrageously dirty.
"I hate you."
"What?"
The single word, barely muttered past the immediate block of emotion forming in her throat, was hardly able to be heard in the jungle they were walking through, though Rosie had long since stopped in her tracks.
Her entire life, she had been terrified of this very moment. Of making a friend, and losing them to a hatred she could not fix. She had been friends with so very many people throughout her eleven years, and never once had any friendship ended on bad terms. Even at Hogwarts, the magical school, where pressure was immense and the emotions of tweens and teens were unpredictable, she'd gained many friends and, thus far, lost none. Though that was changing, right in this very moment, before her eyes.
In the shock that followed those three vile words, the kindest parts of Rosie hid within her, unable to tolerate the fact that, for the first time, she was hated. Not disliked, not even just forgotten, but hated. Horribly, fully, and overwhelmingly hated. By a person that she would have, and literally nearly did by traveling into this godsforsaken forest, given herself for.
But, with the best parts of her buried within her heart, watching as the part of it that was so secure in her friendships crumbled, all that was left were the parts with nothing but the bitterest, meanest, most internal thoughts remained. And with her filter gone, those parts were the ones showing through.
"You know what, Lauren Loratrix Vanes? I hate you too. Not only too, but I hate you MORE!" she said, her voice beginning to rise as she lost control over what came from her mouth.
"Out of every friend I have had, you are by far the most pathetic. You can't even stand up to your family, instead resorting to dragging people like myself into danger just to prove that you aren't the snivelling, worthless failure of a daughter that they believe you to be. That, by getting close to you, I know you to be." she said, and she just took a breath, still going.
"Would you like more of what exactly I think, if you want me to 'tell the truth', to be 'genuine'? Well, here you go. You are a little girl playing at being big. You think that hurting yourself makes you seem brave, and that maybe it'll make up for what you really know deep down. That all you will ever be is a scared child, begging for even a scrap of affection from people who don't care about you. And they're right not to!" Rosie added, still feeling no regret for her words.
"You want to know something? Think of every time that you have ever complained to me, vented to me, hurt yourself and needed my help, hurt or risked me, or gotten me into danger! Think of every time you've done that." she continued.
"Now, think of every time that I have done the same to you. NEVER!!! I am not a therapist, yet that is what you have treated me like! I have feelings too! And problems! And things I want to talk about, but nOoOo! This is Lauren's world, all about Lauren's emotions and how hurt Lauren is and how much poor, poor Lauren has been through because of her family." Rosie said, with a bit of a mocking voice at the end.
"You know what? I think your family was right. You have no potential, you are a horrible person, and I do hope that someday, you finally accept that! Because then, maybe you will be able to put your horrible ego aside, and get help from someone who ISN'T AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD GIRL! I didn't sign up for this! The first time we met was when I got attacked by a Howler, hurt because of YOU! Yet I stayed." she said, quieting down a bit at the very end.
"I stayed. Not your siblings, who really did alter my memory, and not your parents. Not any of them, but me. And I'm done." she said, finally finishing with her own rant, feeling the weight of every single pent-up thought just leave her chest.
She then stood there, and just watched as Lauren went deeper into the Forest, going towards what seemed to be gigantic spiders.
Good, she thought. Maybe she'll be out of your hair now.
Speaking of hair, Rosalyn's prized curls were wild. Caked in mud, frizzed from the night air, and tangled from the chasing after someone who didn't deserve her. She had finally realized that what Lauren had said so many times before, that she was undeserving of Rosie, was true. And she was done with putting herself in danger to be with someone, if all that someone thought of her was that she was a stupid, pathetic liar.
Rosalyn turned on her heels, and began the long trek back to the rest of the group going through the detention. She abandoned who she had once believed to be her friend to whatever was in the forest.
And she didn't look back once.

The fire seemed to be more vicious than it already had to be. Affected others and ultimately herself included, soon. She was compelled to take her wand and take out the fires. Getting the place to burn down in ashes was not her plan for the summer at all.
“Extinguo.” she said as she pointed with her wand
Risks are needed and she had to get in a crossfire. Fire spread like wildfire. Burnt her in some places, but she was keeping her composure, although it was beginning to feel a bit irritating. As someone who is a Dhampir, Angel did not feel at all like the odds were not in her favour. She only rolled her eyes.
“Truly, I think this day could become a bloodmist if it wanted to.” she said bluntly
Oh right, blood. Recalling the smell of blood from earlier it was time she broke the news to her fellow companions. Charlotte and Cecilia. They could find this information useful. Who knows when more dangers or inconveniences will come in a good predicament. Speaking of which she was in one herself. All Angel could feel was being unbothered. But one thing can not be overstated, she was beginning to ponder on how to explain her revelation to her unit.

Zach learnt the boys' names: Damien Dragonclaw and Mamori. The oldest of the group nodded. Zach believed that knowing their names could make the work better.
Well, that was what he thought at first, before Damien shot many words at the pink-haired. Great... Zach sighed. He could see that he wouldn't have a good team to work with. He just hoped that these boys could solve their problems soon, and they could finish their task more quickly. Being in this place made Zach feel itchy.
Zach looked at Rosaline, trying to read her and only found that she was... chuckling. The Fourth Year tilted his head, trying to find what was funny between the boys' bickers.
"Sorry to interrupt, Damien and Mamori," Zach paused. "We need to finish this detention as soon as possible. So..." the boy paused again, trying to find words. This instantly turned really awkward. "I just hope that your problem with each other won't affect much of our work on this detention."
Awkward. Really awkward.
Then Damien said something. Zach looked at him with a look of What Now.
He tried to see what Damien had found. But nothing. Zach couldn't see anything or anyone. He listened more to Damien and tried to look for the man who fit his description. "Are you sure about it?" he asked, making sure that Damien really saw the man.
Damien asked if they should go to look for the man. Mamori said that it was the time for them if they wanted to observe the man. And Rosaline... Zach just couldn't believe what he heard. She said she was okay to investigate the man.
Goodness...
Zach could leave them to focus on the detention only. But no. Something inside him was also curious about the man. He had an internal conflict about whether he wanted to finish the detention or go with the investigation.
And as usual, the voice that told him to investigate the man with the group was louder. It wasn't the first time Zach had made this kind of decision. In Fall Ball 2024, he chose to sail with his friend even knowing the danger ahead. He also decided to fly in a race despite his fear of heights last year. And what would go wrong with going with this investigation?
"I will go with you if you guys are going to investigate the man. If this turns dangerous, we will send a warning with Spark Charms," Zach said. "You guys can lead the way. I will look from behind."
Zach was ready with the spells he had learnt. It's adventure time, he guessed. Hoped they wouldn't get into more trouble. Perhaps finding this mysterious man could grant them house points for whatever reason. Bravery maybe.

Damien face turned a bright red whenever Zach mentioned his and Mamori name. It wasn’t that they truly had problems more so Damien was pissed at him for tricking him, it made him feel like he was just too gullible and easy to trick so that’s what he was truly pissed at as honestly it was his fault he went to the woods. Plus after Mamori little lecture he was too irritated to argue back with the boy. “Oh! Of course, I can let my little issue with Mamori. Since it’s not going to do me much good anyway.” as he said this he sent one small tiny look at Mamori before sighing and focusing back on Zach. He honestly was still pretty pissed but for right now he could put it aside besides if push comes to shove he just would ban Mamori from the snacks he had on him that seemed like it would be fair giving the fact that Mamori seemed to enjoy the treats Damien mother would send him. His eyes snapped back to Zach as his attention was brought back to the man he saw in the woods. He was very sure he saw a man in the woods, Damien has always had good eye sight due to him painting he notice a lot of details some people miss so he was positive his eyes had caught a man around the forbidden forest. “I am very positive that I saw a man, he was quite strange looking so I don’t think I’d forget a face like that haha even though I couldn’t see him good I do recognize he was a man” he sighed as he wished he could have gotten a better look of the man. He smiled when Rosaline and Zach both agreed to go with Mamori and him to investigate the man, it makes him feel honestly better as he did not want to go with just him and Mamori, no offense to Mamori of course but Damien was pretty postive he would leave him if something dangerous was heading their way and he did not feel like fighting for his life. |

| xx | Conversation typically had a way of rendering itself monotonous, but such was not the case when conversing with Colin. Rather than being tiresome, the carefree chattering was rejuvenating, in a way. The words exchanged were not formal nor proper; simply two new acquaintances exchanging discussion about their passions and the activities in which they found joy in — broom sports being the main subject of interest. There was no facade of politesse carried within their words, no duplicitous undertones (she would assume) that she found herself second guessing, and it felt refreshing. Sometimes joy could be found in the simplest of exchanges in the strangest of circumstances. Quidditch was brought up several times, and so was Broom Racing. The Slytherin boy mentioned an urge to pull out his wand during a Quidditch match, prompting Ebony to let out an unprecedented laugh. The thought of looking out for jinxes and hexes while simultaneously dodging bludgers was... exhilarating, to say the least. Perhaps a little too challenging; she preferred Quidditch spell-less. "I'm sure you could sneak a spell or two in without the referee noticing," she joked. It had been a while since she had joked like that. Who would have thought the most light-hearted of conversations would take place during the most tedious of detentions? They had even turned cleaning the debris into some sort of game — against a pirate king of some sort? Or were they the pirates? The brunette was unsure if she fully understood the context of this game that they had going on, but what mattered was that it made the irksome task of clearing debris all the more entertaining. Under normal circumstances she would have labelled such shenanigans childish, but it was rather appreciated now. All senses of preservation of reputation or maintaining a dignified facade had melted away; such trivialities mattered little in such exigent circumstances. Only after many flipendos did she pause to observe what was under the debris. The earth was oddly scorched. The soil blackened, appearance akin to soot and ash, as if somebody had aggressively tapped the residual contents of a smoking pipe onto the ground this may or may not be accurate, I’ve never used a pipe. The earth stood oddly barren, strangely void of the presence of vegetation beneath the branches and weeds that they had been assigned to clear. Was it from the incendio (or incendios) that had been cast earlier? One would assume so, but it made no rational sense; the fires had not been cast near them. Strange. “Colin?” He had wandered off further away, now, a couple tens of metres away, distant. Ebony ran towards his direction. Perhaps it was the impending sense of doom that prompted her to seek safety. Safety was always found in numbers. The Ravenclaw was unsure whether she was deluded, psychotic, but she could almost hear somewhere across the vast expanse of earth screams of panic that emanated from her schoolmates and — was that the blurred shape of an acromantula that graced the corners of her eyes? No, she was not deluded nor hallucinating. The acromantulas and the fire and the screams and the horrible sounds of ribs crunching were very much real. The hairy beasts — XXXXX rated wizard killers, as she had learnt in class — had emerged from the forest and had begun trampling the children in the clearing. Truly a typical day at Hogwarts. Colin was sniffing the earth quite passionately in the meantime; he mouthed something, but it was inaudible under the chaos that had emerged to the girl's humanly dull ears. “— some connection! If only I could sort it out!” Ebony finally drew close enough to hear his ramblings; he mentioned something about reporting a source to the Headmaster, whatever that meant. Just what had he found? She took a glance towards where the headmaster was sitting. Was. Was, and was no longer. He no longer sat there. She watched rather incredulously — for she refused to believe such strange phenomena could occur, even in a magical world — as the earth consumed him. The soil crawled, and then it pulled, and then the old man had been consumed. Swallowed whole. As though the soil itself had an appetite. “I fear reporting it to him is no longer an option,” she stated almost monotonously, motioning to the patch of earth that now stood motionless. What exactly had occurred there she did not dare speculate, but she could feel the hairs at the back of her neck prickling. Acromantulas, and now they were lacking adult supervision. Brilliantly discomforting. Her grip tightened around her wand; she was poised to strike at anything that was to come their way. |
