No, you only need an ability slot if you want the patronus to be a messenger.

I don't think so. You have to purchase the spell tho if you do it before learning the spell through classes. The ability application would be for a Corporeal Patronus Messenger

Ah ok, cuz I was seeing the ency of Malaika Omenuko HEADS UP, THE CODE THERE IS AMAZING, and saw that for her y4 slot she had an ability listed as patronus and it linked to her patronus application and not a corporeal messenger app. Just doing my research cuz I want to apply! Thanks!

Here is the application for the corporal patronus. As long as you buy the spell, you can apply for the patronus on that link. As others stated, for your patronus to relay messages, you would need the messenger ability.
