Surveying more eerie images, not exactly what he wanted to do. But it had to be done. He mumbled a bit under his breath as he closed the distance. Being rude out loud hardly seemed like a good idea after all. That was perhaps why he had failed to notice the unraveling of the shoelaces. Too busy keeping his eyes on the ones that were tracking him, he knew nothing until he tripped.

Automatically he braced for the fall with outstretched hands. They found support in masses. Sadly the paintings he had been caught against decided to take a tumble. As a result he stumbled another half step trying to catch his balance. «Oh dang, sorry!» He yelled out for the benefit of the sure to be pissed portraits.

It took him another minute to comprehend the chain reaction that seemed to be happening in front of him. Painting knocking against painting, who in turn caused both a fire and something to pop out of the wall. With widened eyes, he bit at his thumb nail and cursed. The statue moving didn’t slide by him either, but it was far from the top of his priority. Wiping at his nose and sneezing once again, he froze for a moment as he considered what to do.

As much as he wanted to move the statue more, or take a closer look at whatever it was that revealed itself on the wall, the biggest concern was the rapidly growing fire. As much as he liked a bonfire, and the thought of getting rid of any potential puffy fur that was making him sneeze, it was the smartest choice to put it out.

Taking out his wand again, he scoured his brain for the incantation and wand movement. It was close to extinguish, he knew that. He also knew Incendio was the exact opposite of what he wanted. Still, that was the only word that came to mind. «Uhm, it was something like extinguish, right?» He voiced it as he sort of walked circles around himself. He saw no blankets to put out the fire the muggle way, and waving his hands near it would do nothing but add fuel.

«Extinguish, Extinguash, Extingus, Ex…» He listed off all the abbreviations he could possibly think of, but none of them sounded quite right. «Merlin, I can’t just stand here!» He threw his hands out in desperation before grabbing a hold of his own hair. He could do this. There was no help in panicking. He just had to focus and do. Pointing his wand at the now scarily sized fire, he followed the pattern as best he could remember. «Extinguo!»

Maximilianus was facing both continued sneezing, but also the chaos of flame. The flames continued to grow, the smoke starting to billow. It would cause some further discomfort for the young Gryffindor and something would have to be done. The lack of windows would leave only the cracks around the door to let the smoke escape and that would not be enough. Of course, it might give someone a hint they should open the door, but considering alohomora would not work on it, that would make things difficult.

Focusing on the flame, he did his best to remember what he had been taught in his classes. Frustration would follow, and it took several minutes before what hopefully was the correct incantation and movement would be made clear. He was somewhat lucky in that the spell was strong, and his aim was true. The flames would quickly die down, leaving the remaining smoke and fire-damaged portrait to be lasting evidence of what had occurred.

But that would be the least of his concern. From a shadowy corner, a quiet whisper cast the summoning charm, bringing one of the metal pieces closer. They hefted the weight in their hand, and then in an attempt to knock the statute of the platform for what seemed no reason, they tossed it quickly. But it missed the statute, instead catching Maximilianus on his shoulder, causing a cut as it fell. Unfortunately his luck seemed to have disappeared.

He unscrambled his brain just enough to remember what was hopefully the right charm. He clung to the hope that it would work, and did the incantation as clearly as he could through the billowing smoke. Thank Merlin and all other higher power that it worked. The flames were snuffed out, and left behind only smoke and the strong smell of burned dust, fabric and wood.

He noticed that the smoke didn’t really have anywhere to go. So through both a bit of coughing and sneezing he waved his arms around in the air. It just needed movement, right? To find the tiniest crack to escape through. He could think of nothing magical he could do to accomplish it, so he was reduced to doing the best he could physically. He was quite preoccupied with his task too, until something hit his shoulder. It wasn’t the fact that it hurt so much. The surprise was plenty enough. The ripping of fabric following made a bit of a temper rise. «That hurt!» It didn’t really, but he yelled it out anyways. If some portraits had the ability to throw physical things, that was a lesson he had missed.

He turned on his heel nonetheless and pointed accusingly at the closest portrait. «How did you… Ow!» Moving his arm and shoulder revealed that he was indeed hurt somehow. He tried to grab his shoulder with the opposite hand, trying to get a clear line of sight to the injury. It didn’t really help. He stopped as another fit of sneezing hit.

This wouldn’t do. The cut didn’t hurt as bad once he only got a moment to breathe. A bigger concern was the possibility of new projectiles being thrown. For the first time he truly and utterly wished he had company. Not necessarily someone older, though that would be useful too. Just anyone to help watch his back. He would settle for anyone.

His gaze found the statue once again. It had moved when the fire started, right? He was pretty sure. Its position was definitely different, if only slightly. He closed in on it, looking it up and down. He had thought the sword was cool before, and it still very much was. But maybe if the statue could be moved, he should focus on that instead? A quick judgement call told him that it was probably too heavy and big to safely move by hand. That left only one option. He waited while another sneeze came and went, followed by a slight cough. Then he pulled his wand out. «Wingardium Leviosa!»

Uncertain of what could be done magically, Maximilianus waved his arms around, trying to disperse the smoke. It was not a very effective method to clear the room, but at least it gave him some clarity directly around him, and the smoke would hopefully eventually find it’s way out through the cracks. The room was not perfectly sealed, the bricks seemingly placed haphazardly giving plenty of cracks for anything small enough to escape. The smoke certainly fell within those criteria. Even the cracks under and around the door in the frame would allow the smoke an exit.
An injury wouldn’t sideline them, but it was an inconvenience, especially since they continued to sneeze. Both things together would be more than annoying, and the injury would likely need some poking by another student or the nurse to determine if it needed any further care.
But the statue would grab his attention. Maximilanus would carefully examine it, but nothing would reveal itself at first look. It was difficult if not impossible to make out any features, and there was no crack where something could be hidden. Pulling his wand out once more Maximilianus did his best to lift the statute. Unfortunately, something went wrong, whether it was the focus, the pronunciation or perhaps he was feeling worse off then he thought from the smoke and his arm. Whatever it was, the spell only lifted the statute an inch or two before it wiggled and then dropped like a stone. Unfortunately for Maximilianus, it would not fall straight down, instead tilting slightly on its descent. That caused it to land in such a way that the statute tipped off the side, just missing the student’s toes. When it hit the platform, there was a hollow sort of clunk, one that would give a clue to the boy if only he paid attention.

He attempted to levitate the statue. Sadly this sneezing did not seem to want to halt their attack. He had barely uttered the incantation and gotten the statue a centimeter or two off the ground before a violent sneeze tore through him. Clamping his eyes shut, hands shooting up to his nose, there was no wonder his concentration failed along with everything else. As the statue tilted he barely had enough time and sense to scurry out of the way to avoid adding loss of toes to his list of injuries.

He heard the hollow sound as the statue fell, but took a moment to gather himself first. His shoulder throbbed quite a bit when he moved it. He wanted to curse at the portraits, or whatever it was that had thrown something at him. But that seemed rude, even to him. He was uninvited in their space after all. So the least he could do was not insult them. He had barely noticed that the smoke seemed to ever so slowly shift through the room and finding its way out. His throat still burned a bit, and his eyes stung. The latter could also be allergies, he had to admit that. It didn’t make the situation any less stupid and annoying.

Drawing as deep of a breath as he could manage, he turned back to the statue. «That was definitely the sound of it being hollow, right?» Not having spoken much since the fire broke out, it came out a tad hoarse. Yet another thing he was far from grateful for. He stepped up to the statue and knocked lightly on it with a fisted hand. It probably would take a lot more power than that to confirm, but he felt he should at least have done it before doing anything else.

He was just considering climbing up and stomping on the statue with all his might as an idea struck him. It could hardly be called smart, but if nothing else it was explosively fun. Tilting his head, interrupted by yet another sneeze, he smiled with childish glee. He was a kid after all, and what was more fun to kids than blowing stuff up? He drew his wand and aimed before waiting. Another sneeze was bound to come, so he might as well wait for it. It having come and gone, he wiped at his nose with the back of his hand and focused on the statue. «Bombarda!»

The room was slow to give up it's clues, as witnessed by the fact it had taken so long to demonstrate the importance of the platform and statue. But once pointed in the right direction even if by accident, Maximilianus would be focused. Even with the sneezing and pain of his injuries. He was not faring that great, but also not faring that badly either.

The question around the hollowness of the statute was not one that the portraits would or even could answer, so silence would be his answer. It would require testing, and certainly he would not be dismayed by that effort. Accidental destruction was very different than purposeful destruction and Maximilianus was not one to avoid it if needed. Though perhaps it was good that he thought to use his wand. It might have caused more damage to the poor boy if he had tried stomping on it.

Perhaps it was the excitement of the blasting spell, perhaps it was a slight break in the sneezing, perhaps it was just his luck turning. Whatever it was, Maximilanus' spell almost seemed too powerful as it made contact with the statute. It blew into smithereens, pieces of the marble being flung all over the room. One larger piece whistled past Maximilianus' ear, barely missing his head. Luck indeed was on his side.

But in the remains of the statue, there would be nothing. In fact, it had not been hollow at all. But if the statute had not been hollow, then what had made the hollow clunk?
