xxxxxFar removed from the bustle of any muggle city-center, the Shimizu estate sits proudly at the base of the Kii mountain range in Nara, the site of Japan's first capital. Surrounded by an expanse of forestland, the Shimizu family business of wandmaking makes good use of the natural resources, most often providing its customers with cherry, cedar, and cypress wood wands. For this and other reasons as well, the two sides of Akane's lineage - the Shimizu and Mura clans - are both well-respected and known in wizarding Japan, and thus she was brought up in a manner appropriate for her status.

xxxxxLike the moon she was born under, (fully illuminated by the sun) the child grew up with her parents constantly present. She and her siblings were taught by their parents themselves, who never deigned to hire a tutor; the couple, though well off, would not spend on something they could achieve themselves. After Akane's first instance of magic, there was only about a year until she was old enough to attend day school, an escape for her and a slight rest for her parents.

xxxxxAkane's paternal grandfather is brothers with Akira Shimizu's paternal grandfather, making the two second cousins. The two branches of the Shimizu line are based in different parts of Japan, Nara and Kyoto, due to their own specialties: Akane's side centralizing on craftsmanship and Akira's on business and commerce.

The girl started to explore the greenhouse, making her way past plants both mundane and magical, until she reached the green plant, sitting in a small terracotta pot. She reached in with her hands, trying to pry away the root from the soil, but it would not budge. She tried the shovel instead, digging with all her might until the shovel slipped from her hands,

bringing the plant, pot and all, flying at high velocity towards her. At this time she was sitting on the floor in a heap, dazed, not registering what to do, and closed her eyes with both arms over her head, expecting a heavy impact. However, it never came, so she cracked one eye open, and then both, to look at the shovel and pot suspended perfectly in the air, about a forearm's length from smashing into her. Akane stood up in a hurry, looking at hanging mess. Just as she was out of the way, it dropped to the floor unharmed. She ran back to the house with the items, where Natsuko patiently explained what had happened.
