Hello everyone,
I’ll continue writing here regularly to keep you updated on my work.
First of all, I wanted to warmly thank you for the many responses you sent to the questionnaire I shared with you last month. I read through all of your answers several times. They helped me a great deal to sort things out, identify what needed to be improved first, and also what mattered most to you. They largely confirmed my intuitions and plans, but they also gave me a lot of ideas!
I’m also pleased to say that I have quietly continued with the early stages of my work. The new server is running extremely well (I hope you can feel it through faster page loading times and the absence of outages) and I’m now turning my attention to rewriting the code.
This message, and the ones to come, may be a little frustrating, because I’m rewriting things behind the scenes, and for now there will be absolutely nothing visible for you (in the best-case scenario, when I don’t break anything...) even though a great deal of work is happening in the background!
I’ve rewritten the locations logic, particularly the display of backgrounds, snow and leaves, Halloween pumpkins, and the appearance of dragées.
The only visible new feature for your beloved administrators is that they now have a brand-new page in the admin panel to manage all of this, which I hope will be much more convenient than before.
In addition, they can now select which forums may have dragées appear in them: I’ll leave it up to them to decide whether dragées should, or should not, appear in more or less hidden forums.
I’ve also extended the cleanup script to delete data that has become unnecessary and was weighing down the database and, as a result, page loading times. From now on, drafts will be deleted after two years if they are not being used anywhere (a 400 MB saving and a tenfold reduction in draft loading time, which is no small thing)!
I’d like to use this message to once again thank the supporters who fund this excellent server, as well as the tools (Claude) that help me enormously.
Best wishes to you all,
Zachary
