    1 May 2026 - Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw

There were just a few, fleeting moments when the wind rushing past her ears as she zoomed forward, closing in on Ruth's position, felt like her first taste of freedom in the game. Sadly, they would be her last.

She had no sooner caught up to Ruth than she felt herself unceremoniously being yanked backwards. At least she thought that was what was happening. Momentary confusion engulfed her as she noticed that she was still "flying" with Ruth, and it crossed her mind that they had encountered some unknown obstacle, but then she quickly noticed that the landscape in her periphery was appearing from behind and rolling ahead of her.

It was then she knew she had been hit with a Depulso. Correction: they had been hit with a Depulso. She knew it had not been from Bea this time, and scolded herself for not paying more attention to what Dee had been doing when she took her focus off of her own race and placed it on Simon.

    Rookie mistake, AF!

About this time she heard more snark from Vale about Simon, and AngelFyre saw nothing but the red of her fury. It took every ounce of restraint not to turn her broom around, fly back to wherever Bea had last disarmed her and scoop Godshall back up where he belonged. Then, with wand in hand, AngelFyre would head straight for the Moderator’s stand to transfigure Vale into a guinea pig. The Slytherin's love of flames was no secret to anyone in the school, but since her love of such was also finding its expression in her flaming commentary, it seemed only fair to see how she might enjoy those same flames roasting her over a spit.

She shook her head and the red began to fade. AngelFyre would never act upon such a thought, but she did delight momentarily in the idea of such. Probably best not to share that with Simon, no doubt, though he was well aware she was no dove.

When she and Ruth finally stopped their backwards tour of ground already covered, it was obvious things were not going to go the badgers way today. No miracle in sight, even if she did make it past the hard thorns yet again. Blatches failed, casts fizzled, yet some small bit of hope resurrected one last time when mention of Korinna being caught by a Screechsnap sailed out across the track. It was promptly stomped to death a minute or so later when Vale shouted out Pericles had crossed the FINISH line.

Disappointment was quickly followed by relief.

She shrugged her shoulders at Ellie, next to her side, and told her, "We will get them next year. Thanks for all of your help earlier." Then she did turn around to go back and get her wand.

Passing her own teammates along the way, as well as some Eagles, she said the same thing to everyone she passed, depending on what team they had raced for. "Good race. We will get them next year. Butterbeers are still on me at the Three Broomsticks!" said encouragingly, or "Congratulations! You guys flew a great race! Join us at the Three Broomsticks for a congratulatory Butterbeer, on me, if you do not mind drinking with the enemy!"

OOC: Thank you Badgers and Eagles for another wild race! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t hope it would go our way, but credit where it’s due — Ravenclaw flew a masterful race. If the Badgers couldn’t take you down, I’m glad your two 7th years get to go out on a win.

And even though we didn’t take it this time, my offer to buy a round of Butterbeers — for everyone — still stands. Let me know if anyone is interested and a thread shall be started.

Looking forward to seeing most of you back on the track next year.

Hufflepuff was forcing Ravenclaw to work for the win. Their determination rendered them worthwhile opponents, pushing Pericles to forfeit fight for flight, spurring him into a reckless dive for the finish line. His desperation to secure his team a parting win blanketed all else. Despite the painful cramp of his locked legs, alongside a numb awareness that the thorns left him bleeding, every discomfort faded into white noise.

The racer shoved his wand into the fold of a leather bracer and laid low against his broom. On entering the tunnel, he stretched along it, reducing his frame in time to spot dangling shapes up ahead. Pericles nearly mistook them for grasping vines (thanks Tenūsa) and rolled beneath his Starsweeper to avoid them. He rocketed from the opposite end upside-down, yet unscathed by the dripping glumbuble treacle, loosed like an arrow. It was then that the shriek of a whistle broke through Pear's mental mantra of fly, fly, fly. Wide-eyed behind his goggles, he glanced around, trying to determine who had been called out and why. It was only when Korinna veered off course that it occurred to him this might be the new obstacle Zach warned of from the start. Peri tried calling after his teammate, but his urging shouts were drowned out. He hissed a curse before pushing on. There wasn't so much as a second to spare.

The eagle braced his boots against the metal stirrups, driving his Starsweeper to its limits, teeth grit, knuckles white. He exploded through the waterfall with a spray of glistening droplets and a explosion of sound from the stands. Boos and cheers alike intermingled into a low roar. Just as quickly as it had begun, it was over: a blur of pain, exhilaration, and triumph. Pericles was left panting at the finish line, mopping wet hair from his face as he sank back in the saddle. His smile was strained, torn between grief and gratitude as he waved to the crowd, their cheeky commentator, and the few opposing players still within his line of sight. It was his team he was waiting for, namely @Dealla Prince. He doubted he could have survived sports (or school as a whole, really) without her steadfast companionship and strategies. Pear would seek her out, intending to take and raise their hands in a final victorious gesture. He had never been particularly touchy beyond his bubble of friends, but as the others regrouped, the upperclassman would be witnessed going so far as to offer each teammate a one-armed farewell hug.
Good game Hufflepuff, thank you Vale! and goodbye, Birds 🥲

His journey was not smooth sailing, it was never meant to be in the first place, he just didn’t know how crazy it would be. The bruises from earlier obstacles became a constant ache by now, his shoulder still hurts including his arm. His muscles were starting to complain too. It was followed by the heat, and the thorns. The thorns were much worse.

He was trying to push through but still, he felt the sharp sting all around his arms and shoulders again. He hissed and almost lost focus but it also reminded him that official broom racing was crazier than it looked from the stands. Through it all, he could tell the referee still sounded disappointed nobody had perished. That was what came to mind after hearing another one of her cheerful announcements. At this point, he’s not convinced she was not serious.

Despite being exhausted, bruised, bleeding, and struggling through obstacles, he still wanted to continue. Winning would be impossible now with Ravenclaw in the lead. The opposing team built an incredible lead. For him, he wanted to prove to himself that he could finish what he started. So he pushed onward. The older student from Ravenclaw cleared the final obstacles one after another. It was impressive. When they reached the finished line, he was not even upset, disappointed maybe as expected of any competition where one lost,he was mostly impressed. “Wow.”

One day, he wanted to fly like that. The announcement of Ravenclaw’s victory came next which confirmed what he already knew. The race was over, Hufflepuff lost. Strangely, he didn’t feel defeated. It’s his first official broom race, his first season and an opportunity to stand beside older racers and learn from them. He thought back to everything that happened in only a few months. He joined the Hufflepuff Broom Racing Team and more importantly, he become a prefect. He also made a lot of friends and joined a lot of activities.

For a first year student who had only discovered magic recently, his life changed drastically and it was not easy to juggle everything and find his rhythm. But he was lucky. It’s the best word he could come up, he was lucky to be here, to have been given these opportunities and to belong somewhere. He went to join his teammates looking exhausted, his robe was a mess and there were scratches on his arms and dirt on his sleeves but he was smiling. They may not have won, but he was proud of everyone here. Reaching them, he grinned, “That was an awesome race. You guys were terrifying and impressive on the field!” This was his first official race, and he didn’t think he was fully prepared for how crazy it would be and that was putting it mildly. “We didn’t win but we still did good. It was worth it.” He experienced the exhaustion, pain and slight trauma, okay, scratch that, it was very traumatic, but also rewarding. “Thanks for letting me be part of the team. I learned a lot today.” He couldn’t wait for the next race, next year! AF asked them to celebrate, but he was not sure if he’s allowed to go to Three Broomsticks.
