O Delphic Apollo!
⠀ VI. Seasons In the Sun
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ As the sun’s rays chased away the clouds, revealing the glorious sky, May arrived. Though such symbols of new hope and blossoming beginnings should have brought catharsis to one’s heart, instead, its fiery rays and golden light took on the colors of a bloody murder. Long, stretched shadows made you feel smaller and weaker than you were, looming so intimidatingly overhead that a shiver would occasionally run down your spine. Sunsets stalked you from just above the open windowsill, their eyes fixed on the soul of their target, anchoring them and robbing them of any sleep they had hoped to catch in the dorm before the sun disappeared. The presence was so demanding and forsaken that it filled Sebastien with disdain, making him want only to hide from it.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ How strange it was that just about a month ago, he had drunk in the sun with greed when it first graced the sky in its gilded frames and shapes of rays. With little hesitation, he had set out on a trip to Hogsmeade. Yet now, as it grew cocky, nearing the start of summer, it agitated him with how much of the day it demanded. More and more, he hid in the shadows of the library, in the coldness of the books, comforted by the lack of joyful smiles and the approaching hot breeze. The books served as a peculiar kind of sun umbrella, shielding him from the heat – the kind captured in the pictures hanging in his home’s living room.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ No matter how hypocritical he had been – hence his wandering to Hogsmeade when the sun had just risen – now that it stayed out much longer, he no longer cared and spent his days as he preferred.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Just as life enjoyed playing tricks on people for its own amusement, his Herbology professor seemed to share that enjoyment. Some kind of homework was assigned to the first years: to find and present an animal or plant that inhabited the Great Lake, describe its lifestyle, diet, and other details Sebastien failed to see any future use for.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Still, he was not someone who took homework lightly. It was the very end of the school year, so how could he give up and let his grades slip when the goal was so close? Of course, he planned to complete it, as he did not want to be scolded for neglecting his work, especially since he hoped to return to Hogwarts next year.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ And the latter had indeed been true – as much as he disliked admitting it, he had actually made it through the whole Hogwarts year, and it was just fine. Much better than he had expected, in fact! He hated being proved wrong or having predicted something incorrectly, but this was possibly the best outcome the predicament could have taken. Perhaps the boy was even excited for next year, though that was a strong word; maybe anxious would have been more fitting. It was certainly a mystery what more Hogwarts held for his upcoming years here, and it was no secret: Sebastien enjoyed mysteries.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ On that day, with a notebook of parchment pages sewn together diligently by some luxurious seller from Morocco tucked under his arm, along with a book he was currently reading, which he stacked with the notebook in case his marble-pale skin began longing for the sun and he wanted to stay by the creek longer to read, he made his way out of the castle. The boy dressed in his house robes; he wore nothing special for warm weather to protect himself from the heat, unlike other children who substituted their pants for shorts. He walked along a path made by the scurrying feet of students and grass that, over time and many footsteps following the same pattern leading up to the lake, had learned to stray away and grow around the dry dirt now deemed a path.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ It led down the small hills, and it was not long before the boy reached the creek, as it tilted tidily next to the castle. Even though it was the weekend and many students spent their time on the Hogwarts grounds, the advantage of the vast area surrounding the Hogwarts castle was that everyone was fairly scattered, with no sense of being awkwardly crowded or too close to others for his liking – a feeling that followed Sebastien in more places than he would have preferred. He found a spot by the lake, under a tree that offered him much-needed shade to hide from the sun. He sat against the tree, dropping his notebook and book by his right side, and rested in silence for a moment as he gazed ahead, watching the running students in his peripheral vision, the rippling lake, and the warm, gentle wind rustling through the grass.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ At one point, as he briefly took in the breathtaking view that surrounded Hogwarts, he thought he saw something move – something orange and sly in the grass, over by the path he had walked moments before. It might have been just a trick of the eye, something he should have grown used to after years of strange figures seeming to follow him. Naturally, he paid it no mind, and his gaze returned to the lake as he remembered he needed to get to work – the real reason he had dragged himself out of the comforting cold of the castle and into the rising heat of the grounds.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ He made his way the short distance from the tree to the shore of the lake, where the ground sloped down and finally sank into the water, carrying the notebook in his hand and leaving his book beneath the tree, as none of the groups of students on the grounds seemed to be approaching him. He knelt on one knee, sacrificing his right knee to the damp mud of the lake bank, and leaned down to see if any plants were visible from where he knelt, though the lake’s surface was so dark and mysterious that it was nearly impossible to see what lay beneath the gentle waves.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ He took a quill from his shirt pocket, which he always carried in case he needed to take notes, and a small ink sample vial he had gotten last September in Diagon Alley when he bought the very quill he now held from a corner quill shop. He wanted to start taking notes, at least to write the prompt for the class presentation, but as he struggled to balance everything in his hands, the sample vial slipped and plumped quietly into the calm water. Soon, the ink spread and formed a night-black puddle within the already dark water. Destruction was never his intention, to bring upon anything or anyone deliberately, but unfortunately, it seemed to happen to all that followed in his wake.

Damien was currently down by a creek on the grounds of Hogwarts sitting with his cat Apollo slowly petting him, it was hard to believe that he made it to the end of the year already, he never had expected to go through so much in his second year. Between his father basically disowning him and claiming he wasn’t his son to even dealing with these confusing romantic feelings he had for certain people. This year has been a lot but now that it was almost over Damien didn’t know if he felt relieved or sad that the summer would be stuck spending it in his manor around his father. He did not look forward to that but right now he was more focused on the real reason he had came to the creek, to paint. He wanted to paint a picture of this creek that he would add to his personal gallery of painting in his manor so he felt this creek had enough beauty and life that he would be able to paint something that reflected that. Plus he hadn’t painted in quite some time so he figured this would be a good way to get back into the swing of things. He was currently sitting on a white and blue checked blanket with Apollo lying next to him looking up at some butterflies that were flying near him. Damien couldn’t help but smile as Apollo always seemed to be friendly with many creatures even if he was trying to capture them sometimes. Damien always assumed it was due to his name since he was named after the Greek god Apollo maybe nature understood that and was attracted to him due to how much sunshine energy he gave off. Damien was softly humming a harmonious melody that echo through the whole creek. It sounded absolutely beautiful almost like it was an angelic sound capturing his ear as if he was singing from the heavens himself. He felt at peace, like all the stress and sadness he was currently going through didn’t matter at all right now. This was how he hopped to be this summer, maybe even send owls to some of his friends or even visit them would be better for him as he truly needed a clear head and time away from his father. Maybe he would ask his mother did she need any help in her shop or to take him somewhere nice as he was sure she could use a break from being stuck in the manor often, he couldn’t imagine what his poor mother went through with his father at home while he was gone. He softly used his brush to give nice and soft brush strokes of the water color that would make the peice look more and more like running creek water that flowed nicely into the creek. Damien had never really seen a creek as beautiful as this one, maybe that was the magic of Hogwarts that it just made things more beautiful and interesting like everything else here. He slowly put his brush down in its holder as he examined the painting closely trying to see what could be missing possibly. He turned it to Apollo as he looked at him. “What do you think buddy, is it missing something ?” He asked with a smile on his face as he just observed the cat looking at him. “Meow!” He just laughed at that before smiling. “Yeah you’re right, it turned out great” He smiled as he gave him scratches behind his ears before reaching over for his bag. He slowly pulled out a small bag of cat treats he had brought for Apollo as he opened the bag and pulled two treats out and placing them in front of Apollo. He observed as the cat moved towards them and began to slowly sniff them before he took one in his mouth and began to eat it. Damien couldn’t lie his cat was absolutely adorable, it was times like this when he wished he owned a wizarding camera so he could take photos but maybe he would invest in one for his next birthday or ask his mother for one the next time they go into town. Damien eyes suddenly enhanced on an interesting individual that had just made his way to the creek, he was wearing black robes with the Slytherin green on them with a notebook full of parchment in his hand. Damien didn’t know how he wasn’t hot as those robes likely absorb heat. It’s why right now he was wearing a pastel blue cozy sweater with light brown shorts and his pastel blue converses. Damien noticed his second canvas he had lying around in his bag and decided why not use it on this person. He slowly pulled it out before he began painting this boy. Damien had to admit the guy had killer looks that would knock any lady or man dead so he knew this painting of him would turn out killer. He was ultimately debating if when he finished it should he go over and give it to him but ultimately decided not too. He started back his angelic tune of humming as it helped him focus when it came to painting. The subtly way his hand moved as well as the way his eyes scanned this boy were intertwined as if he was working with his whole body to produce a master peice and he wouldn’t stop till he achieve his goal of this. As he kept humming Damien mind drifted off to when his mother would sing to him as a child as her voice always sounded heavenly and didn’t fail to always put him to sleep. Damien assumed he got his gift of harmonizing from his mother and her side of the family. Which speaking of Damien had no idea next to noting about that side of his mom family as she never taker about them ever and neither did his father he just knew everyone on his dad side of the family not on his moms which made him curious, did they have a falling out or something ? Is that why they never met before or was there some of other reason he didn’t know any of them. He suppose he could ask his mother these questions whenever he came home for the summer but it truly depend on if she could be in the mood to answer those questions and rather his father was in the room or not. Suddenly the more he thought about his family the more people he thought of like his cousin Axyen, he looked down at his hands as he noticed the rings he had on, one ring was the Dragonclaw family ring that held their symbol on it while the other two was Damien’s own personal ring. One was work his initials of D.DC while the other one was a ring his cousin Axyen had given him for his birthday. It was a ring that would detect danger near Damien and wouldn’t go away till the danger was gone. Damien had yet to know if it truly worked but he hadn’t tried to test it out yet either so only time would tell, he did happen to think that it worked on one occasion but he wasn’t truly sure about that and wouldn’t try to verify it either. Plus it wasn’t like he needed to know if it worked right away he never did try to track down danger, it just so happened to find him somehow always find him, like a plague he could never avoid. But now wasn’t the time to dwell on the thoughts of danger as he was safe in a very happy place for himself with his cat Apollo painting a stranger and a possible new friend who had no idea he was being painted. Damien usually kept it that way to catch people in there natural looks as usual when you told someone they were being painted or planned to take a photo of them they tried to make themselves look better or cooler, Damien didn’t like that. He liked the realism and natural moments being capture by an artist that was what he enjoyed by far the most and something he would never give up. He smiled softly at himself as he looked at the finished product. It had capture this boy in his true beauty. |
