The train station was busy. Families bustled back and forth as they found their long lost children. It was a sight to see. Like everything was being put back together after being fractured. Avery smiled.

She quickly snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of her voice. That’s when she remembered where she was and what she was supposed to do. She had to get her head out of her thoughts and the events of the train ride weren’t helping. If anything, they made her think more and replay every second of it. The smiles, the chatting, the. . . hug. Avery sucked in a breath at that. The memory still engraved in her head. Unable to disappear to the back of her mind.

She glanced around the station in an attempt to do something useful. She had to find her best friend, Lya, and her father. She was ready to be home, but she was unsure of what it would bring. Would she even survive the month or would everything go up in flames again?

Finally she found him waving in her direction. Her father. The man she had always looked up to when her mother wasn’t around to be a mother. She ran in his direction and was engulfed in his hug when they met halfway. She buried her face into his chest and stayed there for a moment. Taking him in. She had missed him dearly and couldn’t believe her eyes. She was there in his arms for the first time since the events of Spring Break.

Spring Break. Avery had never forgotten what had happened. Watching her grandfather fall before her eyes still haunted her dreams at night. She couldn’t unsee it. It was too much.

That’s when she noticed her. Lya. Avery waved in her best friend’s direction, but she didn’t know if the girl had seen her yet. She’d just have to wait and see.

Oh, to be a hero, everybody's far off dream. To be worshipped and loved, adored and praised for your deeds, looked up to. All mortals have had that wish, sometimes circling consciously around all their actions, other times an unnourished seed sprouting only ever so slightly from time to time. But the longing, of being seen, wanted, never dissipates completely. And often, when that longing takes over, it fuels rash decisions to make an impact. The ambition to be the best. Hate towards those who do not laugh with you, but at you. And again, and again. The cycle doesn't end, until there is satisfaction.

Or death.

Oh, to be blessed, a hero among people and noticed among the gods. Heracles, Atlanta, Achilles... each gifted, well-known. Heracles' strength and endurance; Atlanta's speed and hunting prowess; Achilles' near-invulnerability. Wouldn't anyone trade their life for theirs?
Ah, but a blessing can also be a curse. For there is no deciding your destined fate, whether today will be the day, whether you'll still be alive tomorrow. Heracles' family was killed by Hera's wrath. Atlanta was forced into marriage by trickery. Achilles was killed via his only mortal lifeline. Would you still choose their life above yours? Both gift and curse?

Think again.

Gifts as grand as these do not stroll alone. They are not like whimsical birthday gifts adorned with a silk bow. For they are bestowed upon the worthy, those capable of enduring the aftertaste that they come with. Not cake but coffee, giving a boost of energy but being bitter to the taste, the flavor remaining even after the coffee has been drunk. But people still drink coffee. They mask the bitterness by adding sugar, trying to sweeten their lives that depend on that coffee, that ever-so-important boost of energy. But is the bitterness is really gone? No, of course not. But the craving is still there too. Always hungry, casting a shadow over good sense. And still, to satisfy one's craving, gifts are taken greedily without an afterthought.

Not this time.

Lyanna Oak was slowly recovering. Not fully, but her open wounds were not salted anymore. Not scars yet, no, but better. The stinging subsided when distracted, while before the wound couldn't be staunched, her constant melancholy forming a cloud over her head. But time is not only life's greatest enemy, time is a cure to sorrow and pain, to the broken-hearted ones. Slowly but surely, the more time that passes the less it hurts. Still, the loneliness of grief forms an abyss, a hidden patch of quicksand that leads to insanity. And that is where the longing kicks in, unconsciously digging its way into one's mind, Lyanna's mind, for the sleepless nights were misery mainly because she isolated herself. Because she didn't let herself be comforted. For one simple reason.

Fear.

That was when the errand came along. Innocent and hardly meaningful at first glance, Lyanna didn't really expect much from it. But she wasn't going to deny a PJ party, because maybe it could become fun after all, she reasoned. Scratch that- she actually didn't reason much at all. Without even really debating about whether to go or not, the idea just remained stuck in her head as if the fates had planted it there for a reason. And so Lyanna went to the errand, and she was very much mistaken. That errand was much more meaningful than she had deemed it to be. For had she not made her way to the ballroom on that particular day, she would've drowned in that very abyss of isolation, the quicksand engulfing her alive.

But the fates had decided otherwise.

After meeting her best friend Avery Gray there, their fates intertwined. For the lioness had been suffering as well, and she too had nearly slipped into the bottomless pit. What stopped her, you might ask? Multiple reasons, maybe. But the most significant of all would always remain the lifting of the heavy weight off her chest. The lioness had confided in the sunchild, entrusted her tale to the girl who she believed would feel compassion. For she needed it, craved it from the bottom of her heart. Again, we speak of longing. But also something more, something purer. After tasting the pain in Avery's words, Lyanna managed to tell her own tale as well. It did not simply "help". To say that would be a scandalous understatement. It did much more than that.

It was the key to her shackles.

Talking was pushing that helplessness out of her without needing to do so in the middle of the night. It was relearning how to breathe. She would not take overrated gifts, for there was more in store for her than a bad ending after an exhilarating journey. The sunchild had received her gift without realizing it, on a day as eventful as any, on September 1st [ 2024 ]. She had met Avery Gray. Not a twisted godly blessing, but that same pureness as putting trust in someone, believing in them. With that mutual trust, an unbreakable bond had formed between them.

They had saved each other.

With that new light serving as a guide to keep her melancholy in check, Lyanna was able to move forward. Time flew by much faster than it had been, and soon the year drew to and end. After packing her things and slipping on a summer skirt and top along with her white sneakers, the sunchild was a whirlwind of energy as she left the castle doors, now a second year. She had been invited to spend the summer with Avery. Once again, their fates would come together. Then came the train.

Déjà vu.

It was miraculously similar to the train ride 6 months ago, taking her to King's Cross as well. The train ride during which she had received the letter, now crinkled and smoothed out in her journal, marking the beginning of the turning of events toward the worse. That Christmas had not been a fun one, and sitting in the Hogwarts Express again made it impossible not to think back at that moment. How she had been peacefully finishing her lunch when the news arrived, the question of why she had been chosen to suffer arising once more.

No matter.

There was no changing of the past events, the sunchild had to move on. A new day, a new journey through the sky, circumstances different than the last. And so Lyanna held out, keeping herself together by writing and snacking and looking out the window and reading. Distracting herself of her thoughts, now a common activity of hers. Morning became afternoon, afternoon became evening and just as the sunset began to approach, the sunchild decisively stepped out of her compartment and left the train, platform 9¾ greeting her. She had finally arrived.

Now where was the lioness?

Trying to find her friend, Lyanna wove through the crowd of parents awaiting their children. A pang of sadness swept over her as she heard a mother welcome her child back home, and again when a student rushed into their mother's arms. It hurt, but there was no time for unnecessary thoughts. For the sun must find the moon before it says goodnight to the sky. Peering past siblings and elders, her patience was slowly running out, sand in an hourglass. Where in the world-

Bingo.

Lyanna's lips formed a smile, and she made her way through the crowd to her best friend. Only moments after she had noticed her did Avery look in her direction and spot her silhouette. "There you are!", Lyanna called as she reached her. The almost forgotten feeling of excitement was overwhelming, and Lyanna grinned as she pulled her friend into a quick hug. "How are you, Av? I couldn't find you on the train, there we're so many people," she said, before turning to the man beside her who must've been her father. "I'm Lyanna, it's a pleasure. Thank you for having me."

The Summer of a Lifetime had begun.

Something was wrong. Lya wasn't acting as she usually did, but Avery couldn't place why. Not wanting to ruin the mood, Avery brushed off the bad feeling pooling in the pit of her stomach and focused on the good things. It was finally summer, she was going home to Wales to visit her grandparents, and she was about to spend the rest of the summer with her best friend and cousin. What could be better?

Well, if here mother was there to see her, Avery couldn't be choosy. She was just glad that she had people that loved her to surround her and a pen pal she couldn't wait to write. The summer would be good. There would be no drama, and nothing bad that was going to happen. Avery wanted to make sure of that. All that had been happening lately was just too much for one girl to handle on top of her own duties.

Avery accepted her friend's hug gratefully. Glad that she had finally reunited with her. "Sorry I didn't meet up with you on the train. Mikey and I got to talking and ended up riding together." She smiled. Still reminiscing about the ride. It had been a ride that she had desperately needed. Something about Mikey calmed her and made her feel like she belonged. She couldn't wait to write to him all summer. They had only been apart for a few moments, yet it already felt like the entire summer had passed. She didn't know how she was going to survive without talking to him face to face for the rest of the summer.

"Anyway. I'm doing great! I can't believe it's summer! The year flew by so quickly! How are you doing?" Avery asked her friend.

Avery had forgotten her father was standing next to her. It wasn't until he talked that Avery remembered where she was and that she was on the platform with her fellow peers reuniting with their families. The sounds of joy filling the air. Just adding to the happy mood.

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well. Now, as much as I have enjoyed this meeting, we must get going. I borrowed a car from a friend and we must get going. If we leave now, we'll make it in time for your grandmother's welcome home dinner." Avery's father nudged her as she laughed. Knowing how delicious her grandmother's food could be. Especially her breakfasts and dinners. Avery guessed she must have had some kind of magic touch when it came to food as nothing she had ever made had been bad in Avery's opinion.

"Yes. We can't miss her home cooking. Trust me." Avery laughed lightly as she began to follow her father through the crowd. He must have borrowed a ministry car as Avery knew her family didn't have a car of their own. Her family either traveled by broom, walked, or borrowed a car from the ministry or a friend. Her father had always said there was no need for a car when there were other less expensive options.

The car was a short walk from the station. Avery was glad about that as she was restless to get to her grandparents' house. It had felt like eternity since she had last seen them, and nothing could get in her way from getting there as fast as she could. The last time she'd seen her grandparents had been that fateful last day of spring break when her grandfather had collapsed before her and Dylan's eyes. It was a scene Avery wanted to forget as it haunted her in her dreams ever since.

"Okay. I have so much to show you once we get there." Avery said with a smile. She couldn't believe her best friend was actually staying with her and her family for part of the summer. That alone was something Avery never would have imagined at the beginning of their first year. That's when Avery realized it. She was no longer a first year. No longer at the bottom of the totem pole. She had moved up and become a second year. A proud one at that. She couldn't believe she would be one of the ones first years would look up to. She also couldn't wait to meet the new students. She had always loved meeting people. Especially people that enjoyed meeting her as well.

Avery sighed as she sank into the seat of the car. She had sat in the back this time. She wanted to have the chance to talk with Lya if the girl wished, view the scenery, or do anything. Avery was honestly open. Open to everything as she was finally doing the one thing she desperately wanted to do. And that was to go home again and taste the fresh mountain air as she ran through the woods with Dylan and Lya.

She couldn't believe the whole summer was ahead of them. So much to do with so little time. Avery didn't even know what she wanted to do first tomorrow after Dylan arrived. She knew he would be tired. Especially after the long trip from America to Wales. It was a hard ride, but worth it in the end. Avery had never been to America, but she'd heard enough about it from Dylan to be glad that she still lived near her home country. Being an outsider in a whole other country across the ocean from your own sounded awful. Miserable even especially for an introverted guy like Dylan.

For now Avery would just have to wait. A car ride the only thing standing between her and her home. She couldn't believe she was so close. She could almost touch it as she nearly burst with excitement. She saw her father glance into the rear view mirror and nod. A question to ask if Avery and Lya were strapped in and ready. Avery nodded back after double checking that the two of them were buckled in. That's when Avery's father started the car, shifted it into gear and began driving. The summer of a lifetime had begun.

The rotten stench of death had not yet filled the sunchild's lungs as she stood with two feet planted on the ground underneath her. No, not yet, for an intermezzo was soon to come, seemingly a break from the relevance of the thread crafted by Clotho, the youngest of the three fates. However, Lachesis, her elder sister, had spun the thread in such a way that it seemed like a moment of rest had pulled in — a temporary mist clouding the above and beyond. There was so much more that mere mortals couldn't possibly foretell. But Atropos, the eldest of the three, had not yet unsheathed the scissors. No, not yet.

For now, Lachesis was in the spotlight, shadows following her in her wake.

The intermezzo we speak of began on July 1st, 2025. As the sunchild known as Lyanna Oak joined her dear friend at King's Cross, something shifted inside her. The dread that she had held within her, the fear of returning home, slowly dissipated and her muscles relaxed. She would not go back to her lonely house and feel all the memories of last Christmas' tears all over again, not yet. Lyanna would spend the summer away from it all, in Swansea, Wales. There, the fresh air would welcome her, allowing her to breathe.

The long drive would be the only real intermezzo, however.

Yes, the girl would be able to breathe once they had arrived, and yes, there wouldn't be any additional traumas once there. But there was much more to the situation than anyone could've predicted. "Sorry I didn't meet up with you on the train. Mikey and I got to talking and ended up riding together," the lioness, Avery Gray, said as they reunited. With a smile, the sunchild merely brushed it off and told her friend not to worry about it. That she understood. The truth of it was, she did. And in the end, it was good that she had had that time to herself, to reflect on the months to come.

With compliment about the host's cooking, they set off towards the car.

Lyanna couldn't bring herself to chuckle at that comment, however. She strained a smile, but then quickly looked away as to hide the pain in her eyes. Oh, what a wonderful cook the sunchild's mother had been, and still was, she thought stubbornly. Jade Oak could not be dead, whether the funeral rites had been completed or not.
Avery spoke once more as they walked to the car ["Anyway. I'm doing great! I can't believe it's summer! The year flew by so quickly! How are you doing?"], leading them closer to the next chapter of the story. Lyanna didn't quite catch her words, but absentmindedly nodded. That would surely suffice for now.

A thought struck her.

Only the day before, had she been a first year — a member of the lowest tier in the school, one could say. Now, she had bumped up a tier; the sunchild was nothing less than a second year, proud of her accomplishments, glad to have escaped her previous mold. New experiences awaited her, as Lachesis continued to weave her thread. Lyanna felt oh so much more free than ever before, a bird in the sky, learning how to fly for the very first time. A slight smile changed her previous expression, just as Avery said that she had a lot to show her. Not that Lyanna heard those words, but timeliness had always been a skill of hers.

A glance towards the lioness.

It would do no good to remain unfocused toward what her dear friend was saying, she contemplated, nor did she want to seem like she was ignoring her. But from friend to friend, she would surely understand that something was plaguing Lyanna. The only question that remained was whether she would actually say something about it, ask her what was on her mind. However Avery chose to continue their conversation, Lyanna would listen wholeheartedly to each and every one of her words from that moment on.

And then, Lyanna finally spoke.

Her words were dulcet and laced with genuine kindness, one of the Hufflepuff's natural traits [ calming presence currently affecting Avery ]. A soft voice, not a whisper but sweet all the same, escaped the sunchild's lips. Not too meaningful, but enough to show that she cared. For that was the message that Lyanna wanted to convey. "This summer is going to be amazing. I'm sure of it."

Something was definitely wrong with her best friend. Avery could feel it deep within her core. That was something she always knew about Lyanna. Though they had only met last September, it felt as if they'd known each other for a lifetime. That meant that Avery could feel her best friend's pain. It was clear in her eyes. Something bad had happened, but Avery was not one to push. Lyanna would tell her what was going on when she was ready. For now, they had to get going or they would miss their train into Avery's hometown in Wales. Swansea.

Then a sense of calm soothed Avery's nerves as her friend spoke. She had that effect on people. She was the calmness in a storm. The girl to go to when you needed a break from the world. Avery was honored to have the girl as a best friend.

"Right this way, girls. We must head to the station now or else we will miss the boarding of our next train." Avery's father spoke us as he began to walk towards the ministry car he had borrowed. Avery followed close behind him. Hoping and knowing that Lyanna would most likely follow suit.

Excitement now bubbled within Avery. This was it. They were finally going to be in Wales in a matter of a few hours. How could it feel so close yet so far away? Avery didn't know the answer to that. Not that she wanted to know anyway. This was her time to spend with Lyanna before the two girls were swamped with Avery's family whom she knew would envelope the girl and take her under their wing. That was what they had always done for people, and it was something Avery loved about her grandparents.
