Post Tracker: pageant, labyrinth, ball
After royalty had been announced and the night was beginning to wind down, Aly Salinger and Kavi Kattimani escaped off, just the two of them, to an overlook just below the courtyard, upon which they could look out over the great glittering expanse of the Black Lake from a railed balcony. Twice now they had been alone to stare out over great bodies of water, though this time, Aly doubted Kavi had brought his surfboard along. And she had gotten wet enough at the labyrinth that morning that she had no desire to take another dip today - hence, staying up here, far enough away so as not to necessitate a swim for any reason.

The Ravenclaw led him there, hand in hand, and then came close to the railing with her other hand, looking out over the darkness that was just ever-so-slightly illuminated by Lear's glowing toenail clipping in the sky. Suddenly, Aly was overcome with that fear you get when you're alone, truly alone, with the person you fancy for the very first time; she had spoken to Kavi plenty before, but this seemed different, somehow. Unable to come up with anything other than her usual astronomy talk, she broke the awkward silence by staring up at the moon above them. "Waxing crescent," she said, softly. "I'm glad there's at least a little light. It can get rather dark out here on a new moon."

Nothing else to do but to say it, then; Kavi had mentioned needing to talk to her, and in Aly's experience, that could mean anything from wanting to officially ask her out to needing to tell her that he wasn't interested in her, at least not in that way. Last time Aly had gone into an "I Need To Ask You Something" situation, it had ended with her crying in the Great Hall, so the bar was... on the floor, to say the least.

Still, she took a deep breath and broached the topic, turning ever-so-slightly just to admire the slope of his nose and the way his jawline cut a striking figure even in the dim moonlight. "Anyway, you had said you wanted to talk to me...? Everything's all right, I hope?"

@Aly Salinger
The night was cool and crisp. The gentle breeze was some comfort to him, glancing to the sky to hide his nerves. The anxiety was twofold- first that he was with Aly, who just generally made him nervous (in a good way), and secondly, that he was about to tell her his deepest secret, and he avoided telling anyone that didn't need to know. But he thought that she needed to know, that she deserved to know.

Kavi wasn't sure how Aly would react- his own family had turned away from him at first, taking months to warm back up to him. Even his own dukun, who had saved him (and contracted lycanthropy at the same time), distanced himself for a while. It seemed like he ended up hurting everyone near him in some way, and people started to think poorly of him when he had to flake out on responsibilities, and wasn't able to put the same effort in, and when he couldn't follow through on typical plans once a month. He covered his scars, only recently being confident enough to bear the least unsightly of them- even still, under the watchful gaze of others, he shrunk away.

The lycanthropy had changed everything about him, it seemed- he simply wasn't the same anymore. In fact, it had technically made him a criminal, too, when the potion failed and he lost control one cold winter night. If anyone were to find out, he could be locked up for the rest of his life... but that was a conversation for a different night. He wasn't sure he could trust her with that secret- or anyone, really. Perhaps one day, he would.

Baring his heart in poetry seemed so easy, compared to this. He leaned out over the balcony, taking a deep breath and avoiding her eyes- though he would love nothing more than to gaze into her beautiful eyes, greener than the jungle foliage on a warm summer morning.

He looked to the moon for comfort- he had always liked astronomy, but now he had a complicated relationship with the brightest object in the night sky.

Kavi turned his hand palm-up, allowing her to take it if she so desired. He thought for a moment more, trying to find the words that usually came so easily.

"I really like you," he finally admitted, yet still not able to meet her eyes. His heart pounded in his chest. "There is something you should know about me, though."

He finally gathered the courage to look her in the eye, trying to read the expression on her face. She wasn't sure how she was going to take it. He remembered when his family came to visit him in the infirmary when he returned, showering him with hugs and support until one of the healers came to break the news to them.

"Duṣṭa, nīca vastu!" Wicked, vile thing! his mother had said, cutting deeper than his wounds. His family had left him there as he recovered, only Vrika sending him a card. Vitaka had dared to sneak in once, when the scratches had nearly healed. She brought him a book, telling him that there was no cure (he already knew) and that she missed him (and that their Quidditch team was not doing nearly as good without him). Because of his family's reaction, he resolved not to tell anyone else, especially if they didn't need to know. It was hard, not telling anyone why he couldn't be there that night, making up lies that hurt, and facing the transformations month after month alone. He couldn't imagine anyone taking the news well.

He had avoided telling her for so long because he didn't want what they had to come to an end. Kavi really liked her- but he also knew it hurt keeping this from her, and she deserved to know. Even if it meant that they parted ways after tonight.

His mouth was dry. His hands probably felt clammy. His brow knit together as he struggled to piece together the words. The poet, completely out of things to say. He didn't want to hurt her, but knew that this could. Keeping it from her would only hurt them both more, though, so he took one more shaky breath.

"I don't know how to tell you this," he started. "But... ah," he paused, his stomach turning in knots. He took his hand back, clasping them tightly together before finally spitting the words out.

"I'm a werewolf. I have lycanthropy."

Silence. For a moment. His stomach twisted in knots, probably worse than each month before the full moon. She didn't say anything for what could have been a second, or could have been hours. Kavi rushed to fill the silence, his pensive thoughts coming into the open.

"If this changes things between us, I completely understand. I get it if you never want to see me again... never want to write. I just... I thought you should know. You deserve to know."

but you're in self-sabotage mode, throwing spikes down on the road
He wasn't looking at her. That was the first thing Aly registered as they stood there together, a light April breeze picking up both of their curls and dancing with them, golden and dark together in the shadows. This had all started under the brilliant gold of the sun, and perhaps it would all end under the silvery light of the moon.

His hand was palm-up between them, long fingers slightly twitching, as if daring her to reach out and take it; Aly's heart quickened, but she didn't dare touch him, not just yet. What if she intertwined his fingers with her own, only to have to use them to rip out her own heart moments later? It was the kind of puppy love teenagers got, but this felt real to her, at least; never mind the fact that they had not yet kissed and it had all been intricate words penned back and forth thus far. Words meant a lot to her, anyway. And the next ones that Kavi spoke sent a pang of adrenaline through what felt like her very core, tingling extending all the way down to the tips of her toes and fingers as her heart skipped a beat: I really like you.

She half-expected a "but" and was surprised when it did not surface.

Aly wanted to poke, to prod, to ask what it was that he so desperately needed her to know about him - but instead, she did what she had always had a hard time doing around him: shutting up. Her heart pounding in her chest, she waited wordlessly for her tortured poet to find his language; it felt like hours before he spoke again, and when he did, the Ravenclaw could hear the pain dripping from his voice like honey and poison all in one. He retracted his hand, and Aly bit the inside of her cheek, internally scolding herself: You bloody idiot, you missed your chance.

And then she heard it. Werewolf. Lycanthropy.

The teenager was silent for a moment, which probably is what caused Kavi to start stammering, spitting out words like Aly usually did in his presence; that is to say, in a blabbering, self-conscious stream of consciousness. He told her that he understood if she never wanted to see him again, to write to him again. That she deserved to know. And she did - but she had also, somewhat, already known.

Look, Aly's eyes were keen and her ability to notice things exceptional. She had spent years training to see the tiniest golden flashes on the other end of a five-hundred-foot-long pitch; of course she had noticed the scars peeking out from under his collar or the edge of his left sleeve. Now, that on its own didn't necessarily mean werewolf - plenty of her friends had scars but no lycanthropy - but combine that with the night of February 12, 2025 (the night on which he had stood her up, albeit accidentally, they'd now figured out) being a full moon and his letters halfheartedly mentioning being ill about once a month... well, it wasn't obvious per se, but it hadn't exactly been completely hidden, either.

This time, she reached out and took his hand.

"I had an inkling," she said, softly, as if he were a wounded puppy and speaking too loudly might have scared him away. Some might have seen him as a monster - Aly knew some folks personally who probably would have - but she knew he likely hadn't chosen to be this way. Kavi was more a victim than a perpetrator. She could see it in his soulful eyes. "I didn't want to say anything in case I was wrong, and also it was your secret to tell. But I hope you know that doesn't mean anything changes for me." She cracked a smile, sweet and wistful, and used her grasp on his hand to pull his arm over her shoulders, so that they were standing together in the dark; the Ravenclaw snaked her free arm around his back, strong-arming him into a hug, their bodies pressed together, their heartbeats one (though Kavi's was perhaps beating quite a bit faster than her own). "I'm an Animagus, you know. I presume you probably take Wolfsbane, but even if you don't, I can always turn into a butterfly and we can go rampaging through the forest together on full moons."

The way she said it, it almost sounded like fun - like something that they could do together, the equivalent of a date. That was pure Aly for you: cheer in the face of fear. Not that she was scared of Kavi - more so scared for him - but still, she hoped her reaction had come across as genuine. That he knew that she would still care for him, no matter what. (And she made a mental note in that moment to ask @Dealla Prince if she knew how to brew Wolfsbane Potion.) This budding relationship would be freedom for the both of them, perhaps - just the right amount of danger and excitement woven into a blanket of pure safety. Something that could, given time, perhaps even be love.

"I had an inkling," she said, softly.

Kavi turned to look at her, his mouth slightly agape as his eyes danced with confusion. She had known- somehow- and yet she still wrote him back. She still agreed to go to the ball with him. She was still here, standing beside him.

He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, forearms collapsing to the rail of the balcony, the weight that had just left his shoulders causing them to shake with heavy emotion. It didn't change anything for her. He could have shouted it from the rooftops. After so long of being shunned away for what he was, she didn't care. Finally, he was treated as if he were normal. Some had been afraid to even touch him, and here she was, holding his hand. Here she was, guiding his arm over her shoulders.

Relief.

After being oceans apart for so long, nothing felt better than the warmth of her embrace. He wrapped his arms around her, finding comfortability as one hand rested on her shoulder, the other gently pressing her head to his chest as his fingers snaked into her curls, lightly scratching against her scalp. Kavi wanted nothing more than to be close to her, their positioning hiding the lump that had grown in his throat and the glisten in his eyes. The weight of her hand on his back was grounding, comfortable. He didn't care that she would be able to feel the rough, raised scars that poked past the end of his sleeve- because she knew.

He let out a laugh when she suggested rampaging through the forest together on full moons- a real, genuine laugh, one that felt all the more sweet in her embrace. She made it sound like it was something to look forward to, rather than a curse bestowed upon him every month. Rather than getting queasy, he'd get butterflies- or just one, beautiful butterfly.

He pulled his head back so he could look at her properly, the hand on the back of her head snaking down to her cheek and gently lifting her chin to see her eyes- but he couldn't stop himself from looking down at her lips for just a second.

His eyes sparkled as he looked at her, his gaze full of warmth and tenderness. He gently rubbed circles on her shoulder. He smiled as he looked at her, his heart racing wildly as emotions surged through his veins.

"Can I kiss you?"

you put your eyes on me / in this moment now capture it, remember it
Kavi was tall, and strong, and always seemed to cut quite an imposing figure whether he was in board shorts or a full suit; the cape made him even more authoritative in the moonlight, a formidable bloke standing at a full head over Aly, even in her low boots. But the sigh that escaped him wracked through his body, and Aly felt, for a moment, him lean into her; she steeled herself and locked her knees to carry his weight just for a heartbeat. His forearms hit the railing temporarily before wrapping around her, long limbs encasing her in his embrace, and Aly had the thought that she wanted to just stay there forever.

Just the two of them, under the moon, over the lake, all tangled together like the vines on the courtyard rooftop.

Though one hand was already firmly on the small of his back, Aly snaked her other hand around his other side, turning her body to fully press against his in the tightest bear wolf hug she could have possibly given him. Her fingers traced patterns along his spine, rubbing comfort over the top of his jacket, underneath his navy cloak. The laugh that bubbled up from his stomach seemed to relax him somewhat, and Aly breathed a sigh of relief, too. Growing up, her father had told her she could have made friends with a brick wall; apparently, she could make a werewolf giggle, too. Add that to her list of varied talents.

Before Aly could so much as think, though, the hand that had tangled itself into her curls was moving down to her pale cheek, tilting her chin upwards. She let herself be guided, blinking hard and peering up into his dark gaze. Soulful and beautiful and glittering in the evening glow. And she did not miss the way his eyes dipped downwards to the lower half of her face, even for a fraction of a second.

If her heart went any faster, it was going to burst.

Finally, it was happening - the kiss that she had dreamed about for so, so long. Merlin's nose hairs, what a gentleman he was, too: asking. Aly was no stranger to first kisses; she'd had several in the past, from sweet early-teenage pecks with Aaron to Spin the Bottle with Jorah or the Mistletoe Spin with Eve, and of course there had been a decent bit of snogging over the last year and change, whether it was Peri in the Ravenclaw common room after the rave or Koko in the Headliner offices just before graduation. In fact, Aly had done a lot of kissing her friends. But this one felt different. It felt romantic - the way her palms were growing sweaty against his back, the way her entire body felt like she had been struck by lightning, short-circuiting here on the balcony in his arms. Her mind was on autopilot. She was no longer in control; the moment was.

"Not if I kiss you first,"
she whispered, reaching up to loop arms around his neck and pull him down closer to her.

Later, once the moment had worn off and the electricity had calmed, Aly would berate herself for saying something so damn silly right before their first kiss. But for now, she simply raised herself up on her tiptoes and let their lips meet in the middle, and fireworks sparked in her brain, each of her senses erupting with something that felt like pure giddiness. She relished being near him, being so entwined with him, her lips on his, sensations she had never thought she ever would have felt - and when one of them broke away for air, the other would simply take a beat and go back in for more.

"Not if I kiss you first."

He smiled a bit, for a moment, before their lips met in the middle, trying to beat each other to it. Aly's arms were looped around his neck, pulling him closer as he leaned down to reach her lips with his.

Every touch was electric, and Kavi couldn't get enough of it. His hand moved from her shoulder to her back to pull her body closer to his, while the one that had tilted her chin up rested on her cheek, slowly rubbing circles across her freckles. He didn't want to let go; he didn't want to stop to take a breath. Once they connected, he never wanted it to stop.

And to think, they nearly didn't meet. After two nights, they were both disappointed, heartbroken, because they were excited to meet the other and then thought they didn't care, that they didn't bother to show up. All it took was one scruffy pygmy puff with a penchant for parchment- it could have been the end of the line right there. Getting set on fire (twice) actually helped them out. Never would he have ever thought that. Yet it was still worth it, and he would do it all over again, if only for this moment.

Kavi took a breath in between kisses, truly looking at Aly. The smile on her face spread to her eyes, looking expectantly at him. He couldn't tell if she was blushing, but he knew that he was.

He couldn't believe that in only a couple days, he would have to go back to Tenūsa. He loved his school, and he loved learning, and Quidditch, and the safety, but nothing compared to being here, with her. Every letter he wrote, every word, was just waiting for this moment.

She was real-life poetry.

His hand dropped from her face, but they didn't leave her for good. Instead, he gently lifted her off the ground, holding her securely against himself, their faces now a much nicer distance apart (more convenient for kissing). He spun her around, relishing in her presence.

He was thankful for the training that he'd done, building his strength and endurance, allowing him to hold Aly like that for a few minutes, minutes that felt like hours. Eventually, though, he lowered her back down, gently placing her feet onto the solid ground.

Kavi pulled her back into a hug again, not quite ready to let her go, even though by now, it was quite late. He couldn't hear the commotion of the ball anymore. Time had slipped away.

"Can I walk you back to your dormitory?"

Kavi was a fantastic kisser. Aly could just feel the world falling away as they embraced, locked together in a most ancient form of touch, warmth blooming in her chest. A soft squeak escaped her as he crouched briefly to wrap arms around her thighs, clasping them tightly to his torso to lift her into the air. The ground fell away from beneath her booted feet, a sensation she had felt hundreds of times before between her broomstick and her Animagus form but that somehow seemed so different in this moment, as she suddenly became much taller than him, and Aly became the one kissing down rather than stretching her neck back to look up at Kavi's height-blessed frame.

She was missing the ball gown, sure, but in that moment, she was a princess - from a Muggle tale of fae, whisked away into a different existence entirely by a dark-haired prince from another country. His lips could clearly do so much more than simply weave beautiful words.

After twirling her around still midair, Kavi set her gently down back onto the stone floor of the balcony, and they finally separated; the air that rushed around her was colder than it had been before their kiss, somehow. Or maybe it was just that he was so warm, and it was his absence that she was feeling. Either way, a rush of gratitude came over her when he pulled her back into a hug... some sort of confirmation that he had felt the same, and when Aly put her ear to the Tenūsa boy's chest, his heart was pitter-pattering at the same elevated rate as hers. Confirmation confirmed.

She smiled up at him as he offered to walk her back to her dormitory, then slipped one delicate hand into the crook of his strong arm.

"There's nothing I'd like more,"
said the queen to her king, and she began to lead him away from the moon, walking slow so as to spend more time with him.
