Broom-racing Sprint

Broom-racing Sprint
Within the area available for the field day, one activity stood out from the rest—the mini obstacle course was designed to help Hogwarts students to better understand the ins and outs of the complex sport of Broom Racing.
There was a clear starting area, with a brightly colored line that had to have been magicked there by someone in charge of this event. Beyond the start stood three obstacles for the would-be racers: Devils Snare, which slithered about menacingly, awaiting a target; a clump of trees, which simply sat, unmoving; and finally, a rather young Giant Squid, swimming about prior to the soon-to-be action-filled day.
Beyond all three of these mighty hurdles, stood a finish line. Fashioned as they were at muggle races, there stood two trees, and hanging between them? A ribbon, set for the amateur racers to burst through upon their victorious finish.
When approaching the track, the students would be informed of the basic regulations: No spell-casting, save that for the activity for Duelling; it’s first come, first serve—only one person will be on the track at one time, so if you arrived first, you will compete first. Afterwards, whether you are trapped or triumphant, make way for the next participant. Finally, you can attempt to complete the course as many times as you’d like! Should you not make it the first time, go ahead and try again! This is completely safe, minus a few bruises.
If a student did not have a broom to participate, they need not worry! A small tent was pitched, and inside there were many, many school brooms. The brooms may be a little rickety, but they were perfectly fine to ride. Although they may not normally be able to fly quite as far as needed in order to complete this obstacle course, these brooms were lightly modified to ensure they were up to the challenge. Happy racing!
OOC InformationThis is one of four mass threads for the Hogwarts Field Day errand. If you haven't already, please sign up here to be able to participate and receive the rewards. The post above is a description of the Broom Racing-themed game for this errand.
The goal of this game is for students to get familiar with how broom racing works! It features a downsized track with three different obstacles for students to try their hand at flying through. Please keep in mind that any attempt to go through this track will only last one round; if you attempt and are unsuccessful, you may try again, however you will be restarting at the beginning of the course during the next moderation round.
There are some OOC modifications being made for this event only. Do not expect this in the future. These changes are below:There is no sign-up, teams, or keeping score during this activity: the moderated actions are here to teach about the OOC mechanics that go into moderating a real race and the different kinds of obstacles and interactions that can show up during one. Moderation rounds will happen once a week (for a total of 3 rounds throughout the event). We ask that you please let us know (either with an exit post or by owl) if you decide that your character has quit the activity.
- The Young Giant Squid — This does not exist in the Racing System. This is a version of the Giant Squid, which does. The only difference is the DC 15 evasion roll rather than a DC 25 evasion roll. This is to ensure the difficulty is not too high for those with lower stats.
- The School Brooms — Under normal circumstances, School Brooms can only fly at a top speed of 3. For this event, their top speed will be 4, so that those on school brooms can successfully finish the course.
Please note your moderated action as well as your stats & abilities somewhere clearly in your post, otherwise your action will not be considered for that round. The default action if you state your character is flying through the course in the next moderation will be to fly 4. This is the lowest speed that can be flown in order to finish the race. If you decide to fly faster, you may—however the only difference will be a larger debuff imposed on your accuracy and evasion stats.
Below is the track set up for the 2026 Hogwarts Field Day. For ease of moderation, please presume that all of the obstacles are at an easy challenge difficulty.Starting Line
Unit 1. Easy Devil’s Snare
Unit 2. Easy Trees
Unit 3. Easy Baby Giant Squid
Finish LineObstacle 1: Easy Devil’s Snare
The Devil's Snare is a special type of vine which will tighten and cause damage to the racer if they try to escape using a strength check. Devil’s Snare halt further movement on a failed accuracy roll.
The Devil’s Snare will attempt to ensnare any racer passing through its unit. Racers must succeed a DC of their own accuracy in order to succeed in dodging the Devil’s Snare. On a failed roll, the racer has been ensnared, and will be unable to finish the obstacle course.Obstacle 2: Easy Trees
A thick clumping of trees. Each racer will have to dodge three trees that are in their way on the track. These trees are not trying to get in their way—however, they can be difficult to maneuver around when a racer is going very fast.
3 accuracy rolls are made for this wooded obstacle. The DC of each tree is the individual racers accuracy +1. On a failed roll, it will result in damage of (Broom Speed x 10) for each failed tree.Obstacle 3: Easy Baby Giant Squid
A large Herman creature that lurks beneath the surface of the Great Lake. While it is often described as one of the most dangerous creatures on Hogwarts grounds, it's actually partially domesticated. And so, of course, we enrage it for broom racing purposes. Given that this will be used for the general student body of Hogwarts rather than experienced racers, a young giant squid will be used for the purposes of this race.
The Young Giant Squid will attempt to attack any racer that passes through it’s unit, grabbing them with its tentacles and attempting to pull them into the water. Racers must succeed an a DC 25 15 evasion roll to avoid the squid. On a failed roll, the racer has been grabbed, and has not successfully finished the obstacle course.

Broom-racing Sprint
Aly Salinger was a Quidditch captain, through and through; she had never once stepped foot on the duelling piste or flown even a lap around the racing tracks. (She chose to ignore the disastrous viaduct broom race from the previous year, seeing as how she'd barely managed to fly a few feet.) As such, with the creation of Hogwarts Field Day, the seventh-year was in the mood to try something new; she didn't want to let her Quidditch opponents have even more time to scrutinise her, to improve their own strategies before her upcoming match against Hufflepuff on the third of May. Moreover, the Ravenclaw had missed the opportunity to compete in the last non-Cup sporting event in which she could have participated, choosing instead to cover the International Magical Olympic Games for the Hogwarts Headliner as a roving journalist. This made her more determined than ever to join in the fun with the Field Day - and to win, like so many of her friends had done at Koldovstoretz.
No interactions yet; open to them from anyone.
The choice, then, was wholly between duelling and broom racing, and whilst the former had appealed to her at first given that she had been known to cast a halfway decent spell or two in her day (a far cry from what her reputation had been a few years back), the teenager eventually settled on broom racing. Her best mates, @Dealla Prince and @Pericles Dralt, were on the broom racing team for Ravenclaw, after all - and had done quite the spectacular job over their time there, if Aly did say so herself. She'd been to each and every match, toting various posters and shouting all sorts of slogans in support of her mates, all whilst dressed nearly head to toe in eagle blue. If she had watched so many races, she could surely fly in one, right? (A real one this time! Again, the viaduct fiasco hardly counted.)
In a brilliant orange that was hardly representative of her House pride, Aly strolled, her trusty Oakshaft in hand, over to the broom-racing tracks. "Tracks" was a strong word for it, seeing how short the sprint would be, but the seventh-year didn't mind that; it gave her a higher chance of actually winning, if she weren't bogged down with many things to do. Ravenclaw's elder Quidditch captain eyed the track as she mounted her broom at the starting line, looking around at the emptiness on either side of her. "First one here, I suppose," she mumbled to herself, as if there was anyone else around to hear it; the seventeen-year-old brushed one lock of her curly, brownish-blonde hair back from her face, wishing internally that she had remembered to tie it back before coming all the way down to the stadium for the field day. She flicked lightly at the compass attached to her beloved broomstick, watching the needle quiver within. "Nothing to do but to wait..."

Broom-racing Sprint

Maisie did not have the best sporting record (magical or muggle), but that had never stopped her from participating. And of everything she had participated in, she'd been the least terrible at broom racing. This may have been due to the fact that she'd had a wonderful team in the unofficial race or perhaps it had been just pure beginner's luck, but it had been her experience all the same. So, when the very special Hogwarts Field Day was announced, she knew where she was headed first—and not alone.
"Come on, I promise it'll be fun and you won't fall," Maisie encouraged her close friend and much better duellist, @Adeline Spinks. Addie's tumble in Tenusa remained relatively fresh in her mind no matter how much time had passed, but Addie had shown so much courage that day from getting on the broom to returning to it. Surely, she could do it again in the spirit of fun (rather than survival). Besides, there'd be no monsters or dangers here—unless you counted the obstacles.
Speaking of which, she could spot the deep and sweeping tendrils of a Devil's Snare on the horizon. Those vines she easily recalled from the way they had grabbed ahold of the vast majority of her team last time in that unofficial game. In many ways, that single plant had cost them the entire race. (Trees had not been a problem as much as she could recall.) Well, at least she knew what to expect this time. That was, except for the squid. Her brown eyes darted in its direction before she made the very deliberate decision to not tell Addie about 'Herman,' if she hadn't seen it (him?) already. She didn't want to spook her friend any more than she likely already was.
Although perhaps there was a different spook here that she had not anticipated: @Aly Salinger, Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain, who they had abandoned in favor of rescuing Addie was already here. Sure, they had shared a common room, but Maisie had never spoken to her since that day. There was a good possibility Aly didn't even know their original goal had been to free her, but she still felt guilty. But what exactly were three second years on a broom stick supposed to do? Swallowing to push down any awkwardness (or try to), Maisie greeted her with a wave, "Hi Aly. Good day for a race, eh?" It was shop talk, simple and dull and not particularly like Maisie. Her brown eyes drifted to Adeline to see if she could do better or to see if she too felt the same dot of guilt, even if it all had turned out okay. She tried to put it from her mind for now; there was a race ahead and she'd rather not embarrass herself as she did most of the time.
Approaching the starting line, Maisie took a moment to plaid her hair to one side as she usually did in sports. Hair in one's face was never ideal for flying. As she fastened the hair tie, she did feel a little nervous, she realized, at going on the track alone. Every sport she'd ever done had been with a team (some better and some worse). In case the Gemmell curse reared its ugly head, there would be no one to help her overcome it. In this race, it would be her against herself and there was a quiet fear she'd let herself down.
She took a deep breath. "Ready?" she then asked Addie, hoping this would just be some good fun for them both. After the hijinx of this second year, they certainly deserved it.

Broom-racing Sprint
After finishing at the Quidditch station, he checked the field again and look for the next best thing to try. The racing track was the one that caught his attention. Without much thought, he made his way toward the Broom Racing station, with his broom still in his hand. The starting line marked the beginning of the track and beyond it were the obstacles placed one after another. He stopped and took everything in. There will be a few obstacles they need to deal with, but at least it’s not a full course like the official games.
He may have enjoyed the two unofficial quidditch games that he joined but he liked broom racing first. You’re not chasing a quaffle here or dealing with bludgers or catching the snitch, it’s race with obstacles. The adrenaline pumping in his veins by just watching the tracks. It may be easy, but they’re still a nuisance! One wrong move and he would find himself being snatched by the devil’s snare or fall in that water! The memory of Tenusa came to mind as if it just happened yesterday. It was a traumatic experience for him, he really thought he’s going to lose two of his friends.
It was one of the defining factors in his life why he took his flying lessons as well as trainings seriously. He wanted to be a better flyer not only to win but also to help save other people. There were a few students there now, ready for the race. He mounted his broom again and smiled at them as he joined and prepared himself too.

Broom-racing Sprint
ROUND I MODERATION
The event began red hot—the first to arrive and try her hand at the obstacle course was none other than @Aly Salinger, Quidditch Captain, Headliner Writer, and the seventh-year seeker for Ravenclaw. Her hair worn down was possibly a hazard on the track, but time could only tell.
The seventh-year flew through the air with only the grace and elegance one could fly with only if they had flown for years. The first obstacle in between Aly and the finish line, the Devil’s Snare, was quickly outwitted by the seeker, seeming to become tangled in itself as it desperately grasped for any piece of the racer it possibly could—ultimately coming up empty.
The next obstacle was one that appeared ordinary. Trees? What harm could they cause to a racer, maneuvering through the treacherous terrain of the course. Well, they simply stood there. Awaiting an overconfident racer to simply fly straight into them. They were not disappointed. Aly Salinger deftly managed the first and second trees, with only the third and final tree she came across obstructing her.
Lastly, was the young Giant Squid that had been placed for this race. It was a cause for excitement, that was to be sure. Reaching out with its tentacles, it tried its best to stop the momentum of the Ravenclaw, the finish line in her sights. But the Squid failed, and Aly dodged the outstretched tentacles with ease, securing a victory with minimal harm.

- Aly evasion: [d20 : 4] + 18 - 4(speed) = 18 —> pass
The next person to try their hand at the race track was @Maisie Gemmell. A second-year Ravenclaw, she was a duellist, albeit not the most successful one. A kind, dedicated, and highly stubborn person, perhaps she would find a soft spot for Broom Racing.
She began with the Devil’s Snare. Once again, the deadly vines attempted their dance, trying in vain to snare their prey. However, Maisie was a very good racer—she made it through the vegetation with no issues, as if it hadn’t even been a bother.
One did not set out on a race course and dodge the Devil’s Snare merely to stumble. At least, not Maisie. She didn’t even blink at the towering tree trunks, instead weaving in and out of the clump of trees as though they were practice cones on a football field. Muggle reference.
Lastly, the feared Giant Squid. This was the biggest challenge—would the young Ravenclaw follow in the seventh-year’s footsteps, or go plunging into the ice cold bath along with a startlingly large sea creature? Thankfully, she would never have to consider the immensity of the Squid. Instead, she maneuvered through the challenge beautifully. She too, had come out victorious.

The last to attempt the Broom Racing portion of the field day for the time being was the lovely @Zephyr Deakin. Brand new Prefect of Hufflepuff, first-year broom racer, he seemed to have it all going for him. But was he up for the challenge?
He was certainly up for the Devil’s Snare. It must’ve been old or defective, given how it miserably failed to trap the Hufflepuff as he sped through the vines. He had much skill on the broom—perhaps it was natural, perhaps practice. But he was good.
The next obstacle out to get the young Prefect was the trees. Yes, you heard me. The trees. They sat unnervingly, awaiting an opportunity to humble any who deigned to pass through the brush. (Un)fortunately, the would not find that opportunity with Zephyr. He simply dodged through the second obstacle, leaving him with one left blocking him from the finish.
The Giant Squid. Although young, certainly a formidable opponent. It would reach out with its long, dangerous tentacles, attempting to grab a nearby target. Such as, for example, a racer passing ahead, with nothing stopping them from a bath except for their own flying skills. Thankfully, it seemed that the broom racer possessed the necessary skills, leaving the Giant Squid behind unharmed. He had done it—Zephyr had successfully completed the course.

Broom-racing Sprint
Aly had only just pulled up to the starting line when she was joined, rather quickly, by a familiar second-year in her own House. Maisie, the girl was named, though Aly couldn't exactly remember where she had met the younger lass - probably somewhere in the common room, or in one of the many school-wide events she tended to attend. Maisie definitely knew Aly's name, that much was confirmed when she greeted the elder girl by moniker; the seventh-year dipped her head in a nod in response. "Lovely and warm, yes," she agreed, eyeing the track ahead of them with some mix of trepidation and anticipation. "I'll admit I've never really done one of these before, though, so I'm not sure what to expect. A miniature version last year, I suppose, but - ack!"
Interacting with @Maisie Gemmell and @Zephyr Deakin
That last bit came from the surprise start, and Aly was off like a rocket, admittedly well-trained from years of spinning off after the Snitch (or to blatch an opposing figure...) at the start of a Quidditch match. Luckily, she was decently versed in dodging Devil's Snare (thanks to years spent in the greenhouses back when she had dreamt of a Healer career), so the first obstacle left greenish tentacles snatching at wisps of air where her bronzed curls had been just moments before. Some trees were easy enough to dodge - until the last one, that is, when Aly clipped a branch with her arm and could feel a scratch beginning to well up with ruby droplets on her bicep. Oh, well. She had certainly taken worse from iron Bludgers in the past. And the baby squid that reached up suckered arms at her just barely missed latching onto her broom, but miss it did, and before the Ravenclaw knew it, she was over the finish line.
The two who had joined her at the start - Maisie and a younger Hufflepuff boy - both also crossed the finish line moments later, admittedly with easier times of it than she. It seemed that her being first to go meant that she was also the first to find injury on the course, but the hardy seventeen-year-old could take it; better she get scratched up than a helpless firstie. She offered both of them smiles as they passed on their brooms. "Well done, you two," she congratulated the younger students. "One hundred percent success rate isn't at all bad!"

Broom-racing Sprint
Zephyr watched the two Ravenclaws before him complete the course with effortless finesse that only made his own nerves worse. They were both brilliant! When it was his time, his stomach was in several complicated knots, but that didn't stop him from moving forward. Slowly, he inhaled and exhaled to try to settle the nervous static in his chest. He was trying to ignore the audience and focus on the track. The first obstacle was the Devil's snare and it was deceptively harmless but he knew better. The sight of it reminded him of a memory deep in the back of his mind before he could stop it. Tenusa. No...not again. His sight was blurry and was replaced by suffocating vines tightening around him and his friends. Until now, he could still remember the sound of the frantic shouting of students, the violent thrashing of the Devil’s Snare as they fought to escape it. It may no longer freeze him in place as it did before, but it's something he couldn't forget easily, even if he tried. That experience changed something in him. It's why he trained harder and spent extra hours in the air. He pushed himself to improve because helplessness was a dreadful thing to feel. He never wanted to feel that again.
When he finally moved forward, the Devil’s Snare reacted at once, vines snapping upward in sudden motions, but having experienced with a bigger one, he somehow already knew what it can do. Rather than panic, he dip low before moving sideways smoothly which brought him away from the snapping vines. Exhilaration replaced the tension in his chest, maybe all those endless flying drills were actually paying off. He grinned before facing the next obstacle...trees. Simple in theory but not so much when flying toward them at speed. He would usually say don't overthink because that's when mistakes usually happened. A quick adjustment and he was able to slip through the obstacle without any collision. That was so much fun, but seeing the squid, his confidence faltered.
"You’ve got to be kidding me..." The young giant squid stirred and its tentacles moved and lunged upward toward him. His eyes widened, every instinct in his body screamed at him to get out of the way as soon as possible. His angled his broom upward just as the squid’s tentacle missed him by what felt like mere inches. Water exploded upward behind him in a strong splash. Paranoia hit him and thought the thing had him, but it didn't. He reached the finished line successfully. A smile spread across his face, his nervousness gone by now. "Woohoo!!!" Hearing the congratulation coming from the older student, his smile widened. "Thank you. Same to you. I'm Zephyr by the way."

It had taken her some time to drift over to the broom-racing area, but she was there, her Comet 180 trailing behind her in the well-watered grass. When Poppy had first begun considering the clubs and activities she might like to give a try, it had been the first on her list. The name had been deceptive. Broom racing. On paper, it sounded tamer than a game with metal murder balls flying around or a sport that involved you getting scorched to nothing while someone else knocked you onto your bum.

It hadn't taken long for Poppy to realise how painfully misguided she was. There were many things the girl didn't know about Hogwarts and magic and magical sports, but the shock she received from broom racing had to take the cake. Not only was it not the tamest sport, but an older student had made the comment that, within the game, everyone was trying to kill everyone in a sanctioned way.
Just the thought had been enough to turn her hair white. After all, she'd already put her name down, hoping for a spot on the team someday.
But it had already been months since then, and while she hadn't given it a real shot as she'd done with both Quidditch and duelling, the little Gryffindor found she wasn't so terrified by the idea that she didn't want to try.
It was, perhaps, one of the most surprising things she'd discovered about herself. Each time she expected to turn tail and run, something burned inside her chest, insisting she give it a proper try first. Even better, she no longer had the excuse that she could only access rickety school brooms. Before, it had cost her nothing to tell herself she had no right to either flying team when she couldn't even get a broom, but her hard work throughout March had taken care of that. Now, here she was, taking deep breaths to steady herself as she made it to the starting line.
She could see a few others over at the finish, her cheeks pinkening only slightly at the sight of Zephyr.
She waved to them all before turning her focus back to the track laid out ahead of her. It wouldn't be a real race, she knew, but it would be her first time making such an attempt, and making a fool of herself in the presence of the Hufflepuff was the very last thing she wanted.
"You've got this, Poppy," she muttered to herself.
The girl was no star, but she no longer considered herself the worst. This...this would probably be fine.

Skylar makes her way to the broom-racing station, having previously done the Quidditch field-day. Though she had made a valiant effort in attempting to grab and score the quaffle, she unfortunately had not succeeded. No matter though, for it was still all fun in games. She finally got a taste for the chase and came out unscathed.
Now she ventures to the broom-racing stand, her broom nestled comfortably in her palm. She is excited, to say the least, for the race. She had some experience in broom-racing, but not officially. Arriving at the starting line, Skylar greets several familiar faces and readies herself on the broom.
Anticipation bubbles up within Skylar as she eyes the course, adrenaline running through her veins. The devil's snare, the forest, and the giant squid are all that stand between her path to the finish. Though she is excited, Skylar cannot deny the nervousness that slithers beneath her skin. A small voice in her head taunts her, causing her to doubt her abilities. What if she could not complete the course? It would be quite embarrassing, especially for a simple race such as this one.
But Skylar would do no good for herself by overthinking. She takes a deep breath and settles her nerves, eyeing the finish line. Just get through the course, she thinks to herself.x

Date: 02.05.26Location: Broom racing stationWords: 253Hogwarts field day! He had intentionally decided to spend the day practicing quidditch things, ever hopeful to impress the right people to get picked for the house team. Though, seeing Zeph complete the mini broom racing track that had been arranged for the occasion with ease, he figured he couldn’t get on with his plan without at least trying it out.
His ever trusted broom was slung over his shoulder in a way that he himself thought looked very cool, but did end up just looking rather strange. That was how most of his actions ended up looking, but Max was thankfully none the wiser. Nevertheless, he found his way to the starting line. Zeroing in his upcoming challenge, he slung a leg over the broom and took a seat. The broom itself looked a bit tattered. Years of hard use and storage would do that to any broomstick. He pondered for a moment if he should invest in some proper polish to make it look nicer. But he caught his spiraling thoughts and focused back on the race.
He didn’t really look brightly on the devils snare, nor the trees, blocking his path. Those two had caused quite a bit of problems for him in the one unofficial race he had competed in. But he was sure that today would go better. Probably. Hopefully.
Trying to shake it off his mind, he kicked off and hovered in the air at the starting line, ready for full blast at the signal to go.Stats sta. 6 | eva. 5 | str. 8 | wis. 4 | arc. 5 | acc. 7
Broom. Nimbus 1500 —————————————————————Action: Fly 4ReducioSpeed: Top Speed is 5.
Effect: When Racing with this broom, you can declare an intended move called Slow Down that reduces your maximum speed by 1 to give you a re-roll (at advantage) against an obstacle you hit. Yes, this is an action declared at the start of your round prior to any rolls where IF you are hit by a something or run into something that you get a second roll. If that roll is successful or not, your speed is still reduced by 1.
