Studying was the most boring thing ever, in Harumi's opinion, which is weird because she was constantly praised for her intelligence back in muggle school, teachers and students alike seemed to believe she's the definition of a nerd, but that couldn't be further from the truth apparently.

----How can someone focus on reading a lesson they already read a million times already when they can go to the library and read about something new, or walk by the lake! Hogwarts in itself was very distracting, so many things to do, and places to go, and let's not talk about the girl's favourite season already starting! Everything is telling the young Hufflepuff to abandon studying and go find something better to do.

----And today unfortunately, Harumi had piled up a ton of homework and studying, and obviously she will have to finish everything today if she wants to go to the library any time soon. So here she is opening her copy of History of Magic textbook, such a boring subject it is, she loves reading history and learning about it, but she certainly hates studying it, unfortunately for her.

----You would think the studying room with its boring contents would help Harumi focus a bit, but Harumi had a talent for getting distracted at this point. She looked at the windowless walls and couldn't help but think how this place is much more boring and dull than the library, for obvious reasons, they can't have the students staring out of the window instead of finishing their assignments. Oddly there was alot of "Alice in wonderland" copies here and there, Harumi almost abandoned studying altogether just to read it, but she gathered all her willpower to stare back at the textbook.

----It wasn't long before Harumi abandoned History of Magic, as expected, for Herbology, such a bad habit of hers. "If I'm going to study, at least it should be something I actually like." She convinced herself while opening the Herbology textbook. She'll regret that soon enough when there's piles of boring stuff to write down and no Potions or Herbology to study, but that's for future her to worry about, thankfully for current her.

----So she finally focused on writing down notes for Herbology, perhaps she will try studying something else later, but for now Herbology was all that mattered to her.

The Study Room
XXXThe corridors were quieter than usual, most students having slipped off elsewhere already, leaving behind only a few stragglers. Many people were likely outside, enjoying the weather that came alongside the new season. The pale sunlight streamed in through the ornate windows, catching dust in the air and turning it golden. Beyond the stone walls, a light breeze ruffled the budding trees. There was always something to appreciate about Hogwarts just existing, not even its magical qualities or curious oddities.

XXXToday, however, Eonaria resigned herself to the Study Room. She had almost diverted to the Library again, but with all the sunshine, the towering bookshelves didn't seem as appealing. There wasn't any sunshine in the Study Room, either, but at least it wasn't cramped. The Library, which was usually cosy, could get like that sometimes. Her satchel was slung over her shoulder, carrying the few textbooks she deemed appropriate for the day. Her footsteps echoed lightly when she stopped, opening the door.

XXXThe first thing Eonaria noticed was that the Study Room was not empty as she had expected. A first year Hufflepuff sat there, already deep into her studies. Eonaria didn't want to stand there and stare at her, so she started moving again. She picked a seat that was far enough to not make it weird but not too far, so as to not make it seem like she was trying to avoid the Hufflepuff.

XXXWith a light sigh, Eonaria reached into her satchel and pulled out her Transfiguration textbook. That subject was always the one that tripped her up the most. There were so many things to consider, she could only study and drill it over and over again until she could do it without thinking.

XXXThe room was quiet for a while, but after a particularly difficult passage that barely made sense, she finally shut her textbook and looked up. It's all those molecular rearrangements!

XXX"Excuse me," Eonaria said, making sure to keep her voice soft. It could be a sudden startle if a nearly silent room was interrupted loudly. "Please excuse my rudeness, but I do believe I'm done here. I was wondering if you'd like any help? My name is Eonaria Kabukimono, I'm a second year." She didn't have too much experience with tutoring, but she thought she would do pretty well, and surely the first year curriculum hadn't changed to much. "What are you studying?" she asked with a smile.

Surprised at the sudden voice, the Hufflepuff looked up and saw a Gryffindor girl addressing her. Harumi quickly realised she wasn't in Harumi's year, otherwise Harumi would have recognised her from one of their shared classes. "Why would an older student approach me" Harumi wondered. But before she could wonder any longer, she paid attention to the other girl's words, they proved Harumi's assumptions, the Gryffindor girl, Eonaria she said, was indeed in second year and not first year.

----"Nice to meet you!" Harumi said cheerfully, the initial puzzlement fading into calmness and slight excitement, it wasn't every day an older student offered her help. "I'm Harumi Everdane!" She said with a smile automatically without thinking, she introduced herself alot this year, it became almost natural. "Well, I could use some help, I get distracted quickly if I'm not interested in something." She admitted while glancing away from the girl, she seemed to feel a bit guilty about her laziness.

----Harumi looked back at the girl, suddenly feeling like she had to clarify before Eonaria thought of her as a lazy underachieving student. "But that's not because I'm lazy or anything, I just already learned everything once in class and now I want to learn new things." She added quickly trying not to leave a bad impression.

----After fidgeting with the herbylogy book in her hand a bit, She pushed it towards Eonaria to show it to her. "Currently I'm studying Herbology.." She said. "But I did that at least a few times this week" She laughed at herself, if she had a penny every time she studied Herbology and Potions instead of the other subjects, she would be a millionaire. "If you're offering, I could use help with all the other subjects.. could you help me, please? " She asked politely but in her mind, she felt like she talked too much. "Silly me, I must have chased her away by all that talking, I never know when to shut up." Harumi offered a smile hoping to mask all her inner turmoil.

----Suddenly she had an intrusive thought, after all that yapping, did she even introduce herself? Alot of the time, Harumi did things automatically, and would forget she did them altogether unless she had to actually think during doing said things. When telling new people her name, Harumi never had to think, she never had a story to tell about her name or a meaning to discuss, so it simply never occurred to her to think before saying her name, which led to her sometimes forgetting to introduce herself altogether.

----"Oh and I did say I was Harumi, right?" Harumi added with a laugh, she tired to sound confident. In case she already said her name, this could pass for a joke, that was her thought process.

XXX"Oh, no, I'm not implying that you're lazy!" Eonaria exclaimed with a laugh, waving her hand slightly in disagreement. How rude that would be! "I understand completely; When something doesn't hold your natural interest, it's hard to stay focused for long periods of time." For her, it was subjects like History of Magic and... er... not much else, actually. She could think of specific topics within Transfiguration and Potions that bored her, but the subjects overall were pretty interesting.

XXXShe just had a problem with history. She wasn't very surprised, though.

XXX"Of course, I'd be happy to help!" Eonaria beamed, sitting in the chair beside the first year, who reintroduced herself. She was a bit sad that they wouldn't get to work on Herbology together, as that was her favourite subject and she was all too happy to detail the distinguishing characteristics of each plant, but oh well. "Yes, you did say--" Something clicked in her mind. "...oh!" Eonaria sat up straighter, lighting up in excitement upon recognising it. "Harumi, right? That's a really pretty name, I think it suits you very well!" She wondered excitedly which version the Hufflepuff's parents had chosen. "Finally, someone who is Japanese! I have not had the chance to practise it much at Hogwarts. Was your surname Everdane? Is it your mother or your father who is Japanese?"

XXXHer sentences were slightly rusty, and she couldn't exactly phrase her thoughts as she usually would in English, but it was good enough. And yes, perhaps her questions were a little prying for what was proper, but could you really blame her? The most practise she had gotten this year was her brother muttering at her in Japanese when he didn't want the reprimand to be public! Oh, and Akari asking her for some translation help, but that didn't count. She was very excited to be using it to speak to a fellow student she didn't know already.

XXX"You know, it has been a long time since I have discussed magical subjects in Japanese. This would be great for me too! Oh, but if I'm speaking too fast for you, feel free to ask me to slow down." She clasped her hands together with a bright smile. Eonaria didn't know where Harumi's level was at, after all. Maybe she didn't speak it very much, or perhaps even better than her, who knows? "Where shall we start?"

Totally baffled at the sudden language change, the girl smiled like an idiot. She should probably say she doesn't understand, right? Or was she supposed to be able to understand? Maybe Harumi finally lost her mind, she knew this day would come, but she expected it more in the sense of becoming a mad scientist, or in her case potioneer, rather than in becoming a person who lost the ability to understand speech altogether. "Well, life isn't fair, obviously I'll lose my mind before I become the most important potioneer in the 21st century" She thought funnily.

----Anyways, it seemed like the girl changed to the other language, that Harumi guessed was Asian, after a sudden realisation, so Harumi can rest assured, her mind is still intact. The girl wondered what was the thing she did, that caused girl to use whatever language that was.

----Harumi wanted to point out her inability to understand, but the other girl's enthusiasm left Harumi speechless, she didn't want to disappoint her. Unfortunately, she'll eventually have to admit it anyway, otherwise all she'll do is nod and smile. Speaking of nodding, that was all she was doing since the girl started speaking that language, Harumi would probably appreciate subtitles, they should invent a spell for that.

----In the end, she had to admit. "Umm.. I don't speak that language.." The girl noted awkwardly. "It seems Asian, is it Japanese or Korean?" the girl asked trying to lessen her awkwardness as well as to satisfy her curiosity. Did the girl think her Asian perhaps? Maybe, but Harumi doesn't exactly look Asian, was it Harumi's mannerisms or something she said?

----Feeling like she won't reach an answer unless she asked, Harumi looked at the girl. "And why did you start talking to me in it? Was it something I did or?.." Harumi left the question open, not really knowing what else it could have been.

XXXThere was an odd kind of tension in the air, one that she noticed too late. When Eonaria finally slowed to a stop in her chatter, Harumi only nodded and smiled before interjecting awkwardly that she didn't speak Japanese. WHAT.

XXXEonaria was stunned to silence for a moment, disbelieving that she had delivered a whole spiel in a language that this girl didn't even speak. "I... I am so sorry!" she spluttered, clasping her hands together and bowing in apology, though it was a little hard to do while sitting down. Mortification crawled up the back of her neck and over her cheeks, heat rising. Oh, no! Her last name isn't Japanese, is it? Anyone could have any first name! She couldn't waste time freaking out and berating herself, though. She tried to regain her composure and smooth over the situation, but failed miserably. Nothing like this had ever happened to her before!! How could she have misinterpreted the situation so terribly?

XXX"Yes, it's Japanese," Eonaria admitted after she collected herself again, trying to calm her racing heart. Oh no, she thinks I'm weird now, doesn't she?! There went her mature, second year facade. Well, there wasn't much of one to begin with, but this one encounter had been going nicely, until now. She hurried to correct their predicament. "Well, your given name is Japanese, so I just heard it and assumed..." she shook her head. "Ah, no. Again, please forgive me! I didn't mean anything by it." Excuses, excuses! "Judging by your reaction, I assume this hasn't happened to you before?" Eonaria continued, trying to ease back into casual conversation with a light joke. Ahhh, I'm the first person to interpret her name this way, aren't I?? Of course everybody else acted normal and didn't think anything of it!

XXXWas it possible that her mistake would come back to bite her later on? She didn't recognise the name Everdane, or perhaps she had forgotten it... again. Boo. Hopefully mention of this incident wouldn't get around school or any parental connections. Word of mouth spread much faster than one would think. She held her breath, waiting for Harumi to either move past it or condemn her. She didn't seem like the type of person to do so, but you could never be too careful.

So that's why! "it's not like I've seen anyone with my name before, but it being Japanese was certainly unexpected.." The girl was more confused now than when the Gryffindor started talking in Japanese. Maybe Harumi missed something? Why is her name Japanese while she's clearly English? Was there some story behind it that she didn't know?

----"When you say my name is Japanese, what do you exactly mean?" The girl asked curiously. "I mean.. Does it sound Japanese? Or is it Japanese?" What kind of question is that! Clearly the other girl knows Japanese! If it just sounded Japanese, she wouldn't be tricked by it! Harumi seriously needs to think before she talks, otherwise she'll keep uttering nonsense.

----"Actually, excuse me, it must be Japanese if you thought I could speak Japanese." The girl tried fixing her pervious stupidity, which did not do much except make her look more awkward, she wished the earth would swallow her whole. "Umm.. Is it a traditional Japanese name?" The girl asked carfully after weighing her words lest she says something stupid that offends anyone.

----Harumi wondered, why was her name Japanese in the first place? Maybe her mother heared the name, thought it was cute, and decided her daughter's name must be Harumi? That sounded convincing enough, her mother, much like her, liked cute things and reading about different cultures, so it makes sense. At least this story is more convincing than her father being the one to choose the name, the guy is a tough man, raised orphan so naturally he became tough, cute things are nonsense to him, if he's given the chance to name any human baby, he'd name them something like "Charles" or "Bob", boy or not.

----Or maybe her name had a special meaning? Maybe that's why her mother, or whoever named her, chose it? "What does 'Harumi' mean?" The girl asked before thinking, thankfully she didn't say something stupid. Harumi might not understand the reason her name is Japanese specifically, but she'll definitely understand the reasoning behind her name meaning, right?

----She felt a tiny bit scared, what's her name meaning? What's the story behind it? Is it something she won't regret learning? And suddenly she felt as if maybe she doesn't want to know, maybe ignorance really is a blessing, but her curiosity won. And she asked already anyway, she might as well know now.
It's alright! :cute:

XXXOh boy. Here comes the questions. "The name 'Harumi' is almost exclusively of Japanese origin," Eonaria explained, flustered. She was no expert on names, but days spent trying to come up with them for each of her figurines left her with many odd bits of information floating about in her head. And knowing the language, yep, very important too. "It is fairly traditional, yes." Seeing Harumi equally cautious, bordering on disconcerted, made Eonaria feel a hint of relief in that sort of way that also made you feel like a bad person afterward. Names weren't a very common topic of discussion: you introduced yourself, that was your name, alright, cool, nobody cared. In her experience. Maybe other people were experiencing it differently.

XXXEonaria shifted uncertainly in her seat, watching the Hufflepuff. She seemed to be contemplating something. Maybe how to get her in trouble. No, no, that wasn't likely. I think. "Again, I truly am sorry," she said, her voice a more acceptably sincere tone. "Not even my own name is Japanese, I shouldn't have assumed." Saved it! Uh, for now. Eonaria tried not to let her gaze drift off to the walls of the study room. They weren't very interesting, but prolonged eye contact was uncomfortable.

XXX"Oh! It can be different depending on the kanji used," Eonaria said, settling back into more comfortable territory. "Haru (春) and haru (晴) are the most common ones, meaning spring and sunny respectively, alongside mi (美) and mi (海), meaning beauty and ocean respectively. It's a lovely name, really." She felt a little silly saying them chopped up, since if the kanji were by themselves they'd have a different tonal pronunciation, but here they were part of the name so it didn't feel right pronouncing them the other way, yet these combinations were all pronounced the same way in the name so was there really a problem--?

XXXAhem. Anyway. "I believe the most popular combination is spring beauty," she continued, clearing her thoughts. "You could always ask your parents for which ones they picked, or if they didn't, er... you get all of them, probably?" She had no idea. Eonaria always meticulously picked out kanji when she named something, even asking her family members for their opinions multiple times throughout the day. Only her mother took the time to indulge her, though she looked exasperated while doing so. Her brother always magically knew right away what he was going to name something, if anything at all.

I'm back! Thank you for your patience <3

"Spring beauty? mom loves the spring indeed, sounds like something she'd pick" The girl thought, she didn't know if she herself liked the meaning, she likes spring, so maybe it's a pleasant coincidence that that's the meaning of her name? Well, it could be sunny ocean, she'll have to ask her mother if she wants to get a definitive answer anyway.

----After being silently lost in thought for a while, she realises she should probably say something. "Sorry for asking so many questions." She apologised. "But, thank you for answering!" She added brightly. After a few moments of silence, Harumi realised she should probably initiate a proper conversation or maybe explain how she ended up with a Japanese name when all her knowledge about Japan is anime and mochi, so just the stereotypes. What is she going to say? "Hi, all I know about Japan is that you have cursed energy!* Is it similar to magic?" Maybe she needs to direct the conversation to be more lighthearted?

----"I really don't know how I ended up with a Japanese name... maybe mom watched too much anime before choosing my name?" Harumi attempted a joke before screaming internally. "That was supposed to be a joke? Seriously? I sound awfully stereotypical, she's Japanese, isn't she? She'll hate me forever, I should just disappear..." She frantically searched her brain for a solution to this awkward mess it made, but her brain froze like a computer made in the early 2000s trying fo run the latest video games of the current day.

----After her brain giving up on her as if it's owed 3 updates, and a bucket of coffee, the girl went with the safest solution, what is it? Making another bad joke obviously. "That was a silly joke... Mom is pureblood anyway, she probably watched some people in paintings conversing about their favourite season.. plot twist one of people in the paintings can only talk Japanese...." She tried, but quickly lost hope in herself. "Nevermind.. don't listen to me.." She finally said.

----She looked at the girl, she had offered to help Harumi earlier, the Harumi should probably redirect the conversation back to studying. "so umm... were you going to help me with studying?" the girl asked. "I mostly need help with the other subjects like I mentioned earlier... But, I don't mind help with Herbology instead!" The girl chimed, she would study Herbology ten thousand times a day if no one stopped her.

XXX"Of course! It's my pleasure." Phew! Looks like everything alright again. "If you have any other questions in the future, you can always come to me! Even if I look busy." Cause I'm probably not busy. She missed having people she knew approach her randomly in hallways and while studying-- that's why she did her best to do it for other people, even if it made her stomach lurch uncomfortably sometimes.

XXXEonaria laughed at Harumi's joke, and then... "What's that...?" Her expression faltered slightly. Was she supposed to know what that was?? It sounded Japanese, but she wasn't sure what that meant. Eonaria resisted the urge to put her head in her hands and sob. Was it possible that Harumi knew something more about Japan that she didn't? That would be plain mortifying! Oh, why did she laugh to something she didn't get?

XXXUsually, if it was clear something was meant to be a joke and Eonaria didn't get it, she would laugh anyway and then quickly figure it out a few moments later. This time, the realisation didn't come to her. Whoops... The awkward silence continued on, occasionally broken by more comments, to which Eonaria did her best to respond. Thankfully, Harumi's next joke did get a small giggle out of her.

XXX"That'd be a pretty strange painting... I'd leave that painting and go find some other people to talk to if I were them," she hedged with a small smile. Merlin, what were they even doing right now?

XXX"Oh! Right, yes." Eonaria looked around at the table as if it had her books. It did not. "Herbology it is, then," she said, digging through her satchel. Being back in familiar territory, her shoulders relaxed. Hey, are they out of order again? She was so sure she had redone the stack this morning...! "I think it's nicer to study things that you enjoy, and maybe you'll discover brand new information!" She uncapped her ink bottle and set it on the table, excited to participate in the ventures of her favourite subject.
