2025/26 Hufflepuff v Slytherin, Match 7

It could have been an easy round. That was if Evpraksiya had have decided to not target the vulnerable girl.

The surprise prompted a small squeal, almost a mouselike squeak, followed by the hiss of annoyance that followed. Even with her many hours lodged in the comfort of the library, she wasn’t even aware that such a spell existed. It was unfair. It couldn’t happen again.

Sucking in a suffocating breath, Amelia turned to the almost nonexistent beacon of hope. And a lot of luck.

Nobody is struck by lightning.
The dark presence that rolled off of Livia seemed to pervade the piste this round, starting first with Alina feeling a chill run down her spine as she focused for the third time upon the first year Slytherin. Her spell would not even come close to brushing Livia. This would be the first of a few misfortunes on this round in particular.

Evpraksiya, clearly finished with the Levicorpus spell she had just cast, let Amelia--attempting and failing to squirm away from any spells coming her way due to the grasp of magic about her--unceremoniously fall to the ground as she intended to cast another complex spell. Luca, at the same time, traced a feathery pattern in the air in preparation to cast a tickling charm. Both, however, would feel a dark presence emanating from Livia--their own teammate--and disaster would strike both of them simultaneously.

Golden mist exploded from Evpraksiya's wand, enveloping her instantly and immediately inducing a sudden feeling of her head being between her feet... no, it was that the ground beneath her was supposed to be over her head... no... it was... oh dear... It was terrible simply to attempt to look around, let alone focus on another target. The vertigo was overwhelming. Nausea-inducing. Luca would begin to feel as if his stomach was being tickled (as well as any other tickle-sensitive spots), a simultaneously delicate and itch-inducing sensation that elicited the burbling of unconscious laughter and squirming from him, distracting his aim and causing his sides to grow sore from the exertion of the uncontrollable giggling.

Livia alone would steady her aim, the failure to cast her previous spell redoubling her intensity as a plume of red-orange fire caught Minnie's sleeve as she was blindfolded. Minnie attempted a weather variation spell, but all that came from the spell attempt was a slight cooling in the ambient room temperature and a flake or two of white snow.

Alina did not move. As the thunder overhead continued to murmur, Piérre leapt on the stage and threw out his arms to stop both sides from attempting to cast. "HOLD!" He glared at everyone to make sure he had control, and then softly cast a spell to help him guide Alina's body off the piste. She would have a heck of a headache when she woke up, that was for sure.

He nodded when the assistants give him the go-ahead. "Alright! Continue!"

terrible presence

Renewed vigour laced Livia's actions as the duel pushed forward. A single mishap would not taint the entire piste – not for her; of this, she would make certain. She neglected to care about stepping softly as she prowled about the pitch, eyes narrowed, face almost twisted into a glower until she just barely stopped herself. Still, those narrowed eyes would levy a death glare to whomever decided eye contact was worth making. When one of the girls sent a knockback jinx her way, Livia set her jaw and sidestepped the unimaginative offence.

With the blindfold still accentuating Minnie's features, opportunity stepped out from the shadows, and Livia, like any proper predator, knew to strike. The cast was decisive; her wand traced the shape of a flame, and she uttered the incantation, 'Incendio,' in a low, measured tone. Her aim skewed poorly, the jet of flames not as concentrated as she would have liked – imperfect – but, still, the disadvantage caused by Minnie's lack of sight had the flames careening into her. Livia smiled.

Adding insult to opponent injury, the other girl, the one Evpraksyushka had so cleverly kept up in the air, was left to fall. Livia did not look, although she heard the thump of a body collapsing to the piste, and she, of course, halted when she was told.

The interruption bored her; to remedy this, she lazily gazed about the piste. The ambiance that greeted her made the content expression leave her face. Concern, quickly masked, glinted in her gaze at Evpraksiya's predicament – her beloved older cousin, who had been performing so well, had seemingly caught herself in the web of her own cast. Upon observing Luca, Livia realised her other teammate's fate had been similar; his laughter, then, had been the result of an awry rictusempra, not glee. Unsure as to what the cause of this mishap – far larger than her own earlier one – might have been, Livia could only realign her focus and tighten her grip on her wand, ready to observe the variables and react to the next happenings.

As she blindly stumbled around, she attempted to cast a spell but failed, and instead received a burning pain as she was hit by fire from an incendio. Considering that was her best spell, it felt extremely embarrassing, and also quite painful. She had a vague regret of using that spell a lot, as it must have hurt everyone a bit. But right now she was focused on getting out of her blindfold and the range of spells.

Alina watched Amelia fall to the piste. She wanted to run over and help the girl, but realistically that would only end in her possibly getting hurt more or being in the way, so she stayed where she was.

And Minnie had taken the brunt of a fire making spell, and had miss-cast her own.

And Alina missed her own shot on a random change. What were they doing? She regretted the little, human, part of her that reveled in finally seeing the Slytherins' spells finally backfire on themselves. But, it likely wasn't enough, and she wasn't sure what to do to get through the next rounds unscathed. Alina could already tell that this probably wouldn't end well, but she was stubborn.

“Obscuro!” Luca said with precision.

However, he would not be so lucky with his cast this time. First, he felt the dark presence emanating from Livia, but a most immediate and visceral experience quickly dispelled it. For someone who had spent his time at Hogwarts thus far so composed, laughing, and feeling tickled so uncontrollably was a miserable experience for him. The boy gave it everything he had, but he could not hold back the laughter, and he grew more frustrated for a moment, holding his wand in one hand and holding his sides with both hands.

Vertigo was a familiar friend from the beginning of the year and Evpraksiya, whether it be falling down the stairs or having her own spell backfire on herself, had never grown to appreciate it; nor did she ever think that she would. Fortuna however, begged to differ and sent her spell ricocheting back toward the Slytherin. Good grief, who'd heard of a duellist hindering themselves more than their opponents?

Nobody is struck by lightning.
Slytherin, no doubt in an attempt to make up for the slight wobble in their confidence the previous round, finally ceased to play the game of cat and mouse. The game, they decided, would be swiftly ended on their own terms; before something else got too out of hand.

In unison once more, Evpraksiya, Livia, and Luca all cast Knockback jinxes at Minnie, who was helplessly blindfolded. Just as Minnie managed to work the fabric from her eyes, all three spells slammed into her: Evpraksiya's (almost failed to cast) spell corkscrewed into her hip, Livia's slammed into her right shoulder, and Luca's (though it was perhaps not entirely needed in this instance as Minnie was already on the way down) sent her off with a blow to the ribs. Minnie crumpled, skidding back on the piste until she came to a complete stop.

The maneuver had not come without a price, however, as Alina's own flipendo successfully blindsided Livia. The young serpent would see stars, and would hold on with only the strength of her conviction and the trepidatious resolve of the terrible presence that had miraculously shielded her from the full effects of the very well-cast spell indeed.

Still, Hufflepuff was down another member, and much to his chagrin did Piérre remount the stage as lightning crackled from the cloud over the remaining Hufflepuff's head. He didn't need words this time, he simply muttered the spell and escorted Minnie to the side. He had a feeling things were going to come to a close soon, and still his eyes were narrowed as he took up his position again. He nodded. "Resume. Give them everything you've got left in the tank."

Attacking a disadvantaged opponent so repeatedly slowly sapped the entertainment from the action. It became ritualised, almost dull, no longer a fair, exhilarating test of abilities, but rather something akin to a mercy blow. Livia had no qualms about seizing an advantage, but even as she readied herself for a flipendo, she knew her own accuracy would not be tested.

The cast, though, was one she uttered simply, coolly, smoothly, her gaze blank and her rasping voice flat. 'Flipendo,' she stated, lazily lifting her wand and pointing it at the pitiful girl with the blindfold. Only then, as three spells slammed into the Hufflepuff, did Livia encounter even a pinprick of satisfaction: the girl had been undoing the knot tying the blindfold to her face; had she succeeded and withstood the assault, she might have posed more of a challenge.

So calm was Livia that even noticing a movement out of the corner of her eye would not save her entirely. Her chin jerked in the direction of the other Hufflepuff, but too late. Her eyes widened – perhaps the most noticeable externalised emotion she had borne during this match – and as her legs tried to propel her out of the spell's trajectory, she was forcibly made to endure the same spell she had cast.

The last – and only – time that a knockback jinx had hit Livia, it had been her own doing, and it had resulted in quick, merciful unconsciousness. This was not the same. It required a great deal of exertion and willpower for the girl not to react outwardly, for her not to gasp or whimper. While she did not make such weak noises, she flew backwards, stumbling until she stood, immaculate posture having collapsed like an old Roman column, shoulders turned inwards, appearance utterly frazzled as she worked to regain her composure. Such an act proved difficult, as fuzziness crept into her vision, black-and-white dots peppering her periphery. Slowly, she lifted her chin, reaching up with her left hand to push strands of hair that had escaped her chignon behind her ears. Her green gaze, now simmering with unspoken fury, would attempt to meet that of the girl who had unleashed the spell upon her. She fixed her face into a tight-lipped smile, determined to push through this unfortunate occurrence.

Alina saw Minnie take the brunt of another three Flippendos, all at once. It was a bit impressive, truthfully, that all three casts had been made (or lucky, a darker part of her thought, as was seemingly a theme for her opponents.) Alina saw Minnie fall, once again, helpless to do anything to prevent the catastrophe.

Last match, she had remained standing with both her teammates---with Minnie. And this time she had failed. She was alone. She was alone in the way her team had left Maisie alone. Standing by herself, wand in hand, with no one besides her. Her side of the platform had suddenly become...immediately...and terribly... silent.

To Alina's grim satisfaction she had finally managed to land a knockback of her own against Livia. Finally. Finally. Finally. It seemed like she had been trying forever. She couldn't entirely bite down the bitter grin that threatened to split her lips. If anything, she could revel in the fact that she had actually hit one of them with something, as all three of them, Amelia, Minnie, and herself, had been struggling to do the entire match-- and with everything left, she could have that.
