2025/26 Hufflepuff v Slytherin, Match 7

Removing the obscuring item from her eyes, Amelia allowed herself to adjust to the light. The moment of slowness had a drastic impact on the first year who was hit by the brutal end of the snake’s wands. Not one. Not two. But all three of her oppositions. The knockback jinx winded her and caused a tiredness mixed with frustration to rise. It was frustrating and frankly unfair. Why did she have to suffer?

“Flipendo!” Luca said, heeding his father’s advice, only to control the cast. The Slytherin then looked up analytically as he watched all three jinxes strike their intended target: Amelia. As he moved to another advantageous position on the piste, Luca acknowledged how effectively his team was working together to dismantle their opponents systematically. His mind went to the strategy they discussed, and he stood ready, anticipating more desperate casts from the Badgers in their final rounds.

The coy smile on Evpraksiya's face was evocative of the cat that caught the canary— all that was missing was a pair of ears and a self-satisfied swishing tail. She'd expected perhaps, one or two spells to land. All three was a rarer phenomenon Evpraksiya presumed was on account of the badger's disorganization, but who was she to pass up a opportunity if they were so insistent to offer them to her?

Minnie groaned in frustration as her flipendo missed. She was not doing well today. To make things worse, Amelia was getting hit on all sides as she tried to remove her blindfold. How were they supposed to come back from this? At least her blindfold was off. This was really going downhill though. Luckily, she hadn't been hit herself, and was ready to take a deep breath and turn the tables on those snakes.

Angry Cloud >(
Reducio
The angry cloud is over Team Hufflepuff's heads.

Amelia: d20(3) --> No Strike
Minnie: d20(16) --> No Strike
Alina: d20(1) --> No Strike

Nobody is struck by lightning.
The game quickly transformed from an intense battle of will and power into a striking game of humiliation marked by a particularly haughtiness of the Slytherin team treating the Hufflepuff competitors not terribly unlike a mouse as a cat who held that miserable rodent's tail under its claw simply for the purposes of watching it attempt to run from the bind it was in. While Hufflepuff seemed determined to turn the tides on their opponents--a Flipendo from Alina only just slipped past the nimble Livia and an Obscuro from Amelia towards Evpraksiya went wide again.

Luca made good with an Obscuro of his own against Minnie, who had once again not reacted swiftly enough to cast a spell of her own before her world went dark. Livia seemed intent to attempt a disarming spell, but found that when she tried to cast it, her wand would spark and then "cough". Was it Ex-pelli-AHR-mus or had it actually been Ex-pelle-AER-mus...? Was it a brief failure of memory or had she taken her notes down incorrectly...? And as for Evpraksiya... she was far ahead in her classes, casting a SIXTH year spell of all things and managing to foist Amelia into the air with a frightening dexterity. Piérre's eyes widened. Since when had an underclassman been able to cast such a high-level spell so easily...?

"Levicorpus! That's... a really new one!" He had to remark on it. "What are they feeding these underclassmen these days?!"
Moderator Note
I have been forgetting to account for Terrible Presence damage reduction this entire duel. Metelojinx damage is not affected due to its source being Livia. However, I have gone back and fixed the hp values. Amelia had +45 health for the purposes of this round & Alina had +57 health. Nothing was affected overall besides sheer values, since no team attempted a lethality on a vulnerable opponent. Terrible Presence's -10% damage reduction is now being accounted for.

Incompetence curdled on Livia’s tongue like spoilt milk, the incantation dying on dry lips like a hint of water in a desert. She narrowly sidestepped yet another spell, and, vying to prove herself, she nearly coughed out the raspy intent at a disarming charm. But with the surprise of the spell that had darted next to her, all that left her larynx was a half-uttered murmur: Expel…’

She trailed off.

Livia’s cheeks burned, a result of her unintended mishap. Her knuckles whitened against her wand. Carefully, she inhaled, intent on levelling her breathing. The acid that burned in her throat only intensified when she realised that the attacks of both of her compatriots had hit their marks. Evpraksiya’s Levicorpus spelled itself as a mark of true magical competence, and although Livia stared at her cousin in affable awe, she could not entirely tamp down the bitter flames beginning to kindle in her soul.

“Obscuro!” the Slytherin said firmly.

Luca watched as, following the wand movement, the black ribbon flew in the air across the piste, wrapping itself successfully around his opponent’s eyes. The spell was becoming more reliable under pressure—his precision practice was paying off.

From the corner of his eye, the Corranado boy clocked Livia attempting a spell that she was unfamiliar with. He catalogued Livia’s failed cast as a variable—an opening the Badgers might try to exploit. He turned his head and caught Evpraksiya’s Levicorpus, noting that casting a 6th-year spell as an underclassman was exactly the precision that he aspired to. After this, he turned his focus back to the remaining threats across the piste.

Minnie was preparing to make her move when a blindfold landed on her and made everything go dark. Oh no. This is bad. This is really really bad. And the day had started so well and she had felt so optimistic. What was she going to do to get out of this situation? Why couldn't she have reacted faster?

Her spell had missed by centimeters. She was so dang close it was infuriating. It was a sting too because it was already another turn she spent trying to hit Livia. There was no three-> four times lucky in her spell sequence. Maybe Livia was just really lucky. She flips her wand around in her grip trying to center herself.

Amelia has been hit by some spell Alina had never even heard of. How this girl knew how to cast or was beyond her. But logically the first year couldn't have done the homework required for it. She was either given it, or bought it. Even the sock hunt only went up to year 5 spells. Maybe something in the past. Hufflepuffs were supposed to be selfless and humble, but she couldn't help the small sour taste the thought left in her mouth.

But at the same time she had been extremly lucky herself. Livia's slip in judgement saves her from having to look for her wand. And for that, she was thankful. Minnie got caught in that same blindfold spell that seemed to be a favorite of the Slytherins, but at least she wasn't hurt.

There ought to be no favour to be fairer than Fortuna's, magnanimous and kind as she so often were in her grace. Evpraksiya however, was never planning on testing her miracles; the lacerations left rending through her forearm by her previously failed attempts at casting that saints-damned spell had been healed in secrecy (some older years who were so very considerate to keep quiet after a short chat) and now, as she raised her hand to cast, her sleeve fell away to reveal nothing but expanses of smooth unblemished skin. The spiral of ink that left her wand did so with the languid grace of a unfurling serpent and hoisted Lerelle up with much of the same predatory poise.

A certain sense of satisfaction settled at the base of her spine, one that she'd coyly deny had any correlation to schadenfreude if asked. Everyone likes to see their efforts bear fruit. Fruit that, Livia seemed not to have reaped, unfortunately.

Ah, she should've gone over this with her more beforehand. Evpraksiya didn't need Nadezhda to scold her for failing to take care of her cousin. Something to keep in mind after the duel then, perhaps she could get Livia more into practice if she was to put in a order for a batch of the bitter black licorice tea that quaint shop— Ippodo?— had come out with recently?

On a more pleasant note, Luca certainly seemed to be doing well.
