Sometimes books were so much easier than people. Ivy did not care whether her peers liked her or not, and she did get along with some people, but her blunt nature seemed to drive everyone away, and she often tired of trying to keep up a polite conversation and resorted to reading. Now, as she walked, she ran her hand along the spines of the books, thinking to herself about how different Hogwarts was to Bellamy Manor - in both good and bad ways.

Bellamy Manor was silent - so much that you could probably hear the sound of someone turning in their sleep at night from across the house. There was nothing out of place, and the rooms were stiflingly hot all year round. Hogwarts, on the other hand - there were sounds everywhere, all the time. Even at night, there were sounds of the ghosts talking, or the house elves cleaning up, or the telltale click-clack of the caretaker's boots, patrolling the corridors for students out of bed. Ivy was still not used to having so many noises everywhere, and as the library was the one place students were required to be quiet (as the librarian demanded), she often found herself going back whenever she could. She did not miss Bellamy Manor, as it had a way of feeling cold and unfamiliar even after living there for years and years, with fires raging in every room - she missed the silence there, the silence that was expected of everyone.

She also missed her younger sister. Alison Bellamy was most unlike Ivy, but yet they got along and had an unbreakable bond. Ivy was obedient. Alison was rebellious. While their parents had never raised a hand toward her, it was obvious that they did not see her the same way as they saw Ivy, by the way they spoke and acted. Ivy hated this unfair treatment, and had practically raised her younger sister - more so when their older sister eloped with a Muggle boy. She wondered how Alison was faring now that she was gone, and moodily pulled out a random book.

She sat down to read it, brushing away all thoughts of the Bellamys. However, it was only a few minutes before thoughts of her sister returned, and she slammed the book shut in annoyance. If she couldn't turn to books for help, what could she do? Shaking her head, Ivy stood up to return the book to its shelf. But she hadn't been looking where she was going, and walked right into someone else, knocking both of them to the floor. "Hey, watch where you're going, will you?" Ivy snapped, even though it was her who hadn't been paying attention. She wasn't injured - she was more so embarrassed. The Gryffindor scrambled to her feet. So much for a quiet afternoon of reading.

"Oops, sorry. Are you okay?" said Aida with genuine concern. She moved the sleeve of her tunic over her face so subtly that only a rather observant person would notice the dewy look of cheeks that recently streamed with tears.

"What are you reading? I feel like I've seen you here before,"
said Aida quickly, as she usually did. "My name is Aida. Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood. I'm new here. Are you just reading for your classwork or do you really just like books?" A sparkle seemed to return to her eyes as if it belonged there and the previous dullness in her gaze was not her natural state.

"I don't suppose you know what kinds of books they have in the restricted section? I keep getting non-answers from people who either don't know or don't want me to know. Do you know what lives in the forbidden forest and why they are there?" The questions streamed out like a river engorged with fresh spring snowmelt. Aida was hungry for conversation now that she was surrounded by a lot of people, though most of the time she felt they were locked away behind a curtain of awkwardness. After a second Aida slowly shook her head and crossed her arms. "I'm sorry, I know I can be hard to understand because I talk so fast." Certainly her strong highlander accent didn't help many Hogwarts residents to understand.

The offending person turned out to be a strangely pale girl with shocking white hair and violet-blue eyes. She asked if Ivy was alright, seemingly not caring that she, too, had been knocked to the ground. “I’m fine,” Ivy muttered in response.

The girl launched a whole speech in Ivy’s way without giving her any chance to repond. Ivy sighed. She did not like having one-sided conversations - it was annoying, for one, and rather impolite as well. The white-haired girl seemed rather inclined to talk, her words tripping over each other and her accent thick and difficult to understand. The only things she picked up in her little monologue was her name, really, which was... Aida...? Ivy blinked at her, baffled, before responding, “Uhhhh... right. I’m Ivy Bellamy.”

The girl then apologised for speaking too fast, and Ivy relaxed, relieved that she was aware of her own faults. “That’s alright. Aida, right?” Ivy was still rather unsure of what her name was, as her speech had been so rushed. “What house are you in?” It was impossible to tell now, as classes had ended already and majority of the students had changed out of their uniform into their own clothing. Ivy herself was wearing a pretty pink dress with a simple design and dark boots. It may be considered fancy for other students, but for Ivy, who had been raised in an aristocratic, old-fashioned family and was reminded daily that appearances were important, this kind of outfit was something she wore all the time when not in Hogwarts robes.

“I was about to return this book to its shelf. It didn’t strike my fancy,” Ivy told Aida, turning the book over in her hands. Ironically, the title was The Art of Walking. She suppressed a grin and began to walk along the shelves, searching for where the book had been. “So what brings you to the library today?” she asked Aida casually.

Aida began to feel a little tired, as she usually did when some of her questions were overlooked. This was a frequent occurrence since she was always like this, talking quickly and pelting others with one question after another.

"I'm in Ravenclaw," replied Aida. She wore an oversized white woolen sweater adorned with a genuine pearl necklace and long white leather breeches made from doeskin. Knee-high white suede slouchy boots with hardly any heels completed the look. She seemed like she could get on a horse at any time, but how she would have kept an outfit white in such conditions was hard to say. The pearl necklace seemed a bit out of place next to her unbrushed wild hair and otherwise rural attire. Was this a new fashion trend, rural chic? Who even wore leather breeches in the modern era, let alone white ones?

Aida observed the book carried by the other student, The Art of Walking. What an unusual title, and very curious. Are there ideal ways of walking, thought Aida, with extra efficiency or more power? Or was this another one of those rulebooks telling her how to think and feel and walk and talk?

"I guess people find my questions overwhelming when they don't answer,"
said Aida. "So why don't you tell me about yourself?' The white spectre of a girl did not understand that her accent could be difficult for many at Hogwarts since she spent most of her life deep in the Highlands where her plain English was the accessible language for outsiders compared to her local Scots Gaelic. Aida genuinely thought her only communication problem was that she was too fast. She was used to being blunt because that was how people, especially children, were where she grew up.

The other girl’s outfit choice was... interesting. Ivy was rather unsure of what to think of it. She had grown up in an old-fashioned pureblood family who would not be seen dead in something like Aida was wearing, but something about the Ravenclaw’s already-strange appearance, with her shock of white-blonde hair and skin just as pale, seemed to balance out the oddness and modernity of her outfit.

Overwhelmed was an understatement for how Ivy had felt when Aida had been shooting questions her way. Honestly, that girl needed to slow down. Her accent was hard enough to understand as it was. Ivy blinked at her next question, but not because it wasn’t incomprehensible. Tell me about yourself wad a rather odd way of starting a conversation, wasn’t it? Something like that was only said in an interview and most certainly not an everyday conversation.

“A little intrusive, don’t you think?” Ivy did not hold back from expressing her thoughts. She stood on the tips of her toes, pushing the book back into where it had been before turning around, grey eyes scanning Aida’s face for a response. “I’ve known you for all of five minutes.”

This girl really did not know how to talk to people, did she? Ivy sighed. She, of course, had been given Conversation lessons by her mother, although the methods used were... questionable. Ivy was raised to speak to everyone as if they were a servant and nothing more (unless they were from some respectable family) and did not hesitate to speak her mind. This often resulted in clashes between her and those she met, but Ivy was also raised not to take to heart words said by insignificant people; naturally she did not care what they thought. Aida, on the other hand, seemed to her like someone who would take everything personally. Pity for the awkward Ravenclaw stirred in the depths of Ivy’s heart, and she relaxed her face and tried to keep her tone gentle. “The castle’s so strange sometimes, isn’t it?” She was giving Aida a subtle prompt for conversation. Hopefully the girl would take it.

"Oops, sorry. I guess I was told before that I'm too intrusive," said Aida, cocking her head and half frowning. "I can't understand why people want to talk at all if people just dislike questions so much. Why does no one here like talking with me?" Aida sighed and narrowed her eyes, clearly annoyed at something, but her tone sounded distant as if she were talking about something that happened before all this.

"I don't really know much about castles, so I don't really know when or if this castle is strange. How am I to know that all this isn't normal and I'm the one that's terribly strange? At least, that's how people act, is that I'm always the only strange one. People around all making magic so normally... I can't even make magic, so I don't even know why I'm supposed to be here. It must have been some mistake because of my weird hair and skin. It must be that the castle is normal and all the rules are normal and everyone just wants to live like this. Everyone must really like rules and being made into perfect little people. Why they think these rules are good, I can't understand, but I'll probably never understand. I don't even want to be normal." Aida's rant was soft but audible with a distracted quality, as if the rest of the library had temporarily phased out of existence for her.

After a moment Aida shook her head. "No, I must be missing something. Tell me why the castle is strange sometimes, please," requested Aida. I will have to be extra polite, extra formal, thought Aida, if I'm to learn anything from people here. Their rules are very important to them.

Ivy was unsure of how to react to Aida’s rant. Should she laugh or should she snap at her? In the end, the Gryffindor decided that both options would probably confuse the Ravenclaw even more, and instead eyed her carefully as she spoke. “Well, one would expect this castle feel very empty, as it’s so big,” she explained, a little impatiently. Ivy was not exactly the best at social interactions, but this girl took awkward to a whole new level. She had never met anyone who ignored all prompts for conversation and spoke in random bursts.

They reached a window, and Ivy sat on the edge of the windowsill, her back against the glass. She would try one more time for a successful conversation, and if Aida did not take the chance, then Ivy would make up some excuse and make her exit. The Gryffindor‘s patience was running low, and if this did not work, leaving would be the only way to avoid snapping at Aida. “Have you written home yet?” Ivy had. It was a slightly mournful letter addressed to her father regarding her sorting, and while the reply was not openly accusing, it was most certainly disappointed.

All Bellamys, aside from her mother, who had attended Beauxbatons, and her older sister (Hufflepuff), had been in Slytherin. It was not surprising that Oliver Bellamy had been disappointed - but what could he do about it?

Aida followed Ivy to the windowsill and, lacking a chair or a good place to sit, she squatted down nearby as she was accustomed to doing when outside. Since Aida had done a lot of squatting to avoid getting dirty when lacking a chair, she could be comfortable in that position for very long periods. It was nice to be next to the window because of the bright light coming in from it, and because Aida felt a slightly reduced sense of claustrophobia next to windows. The relatively open expanses of the castle did not feel empty so much as comfortable to her.

“I have no one to write to at home,” replied Aida. “I ran away shortly before I received my letter of admittance. Both of my parents are … gone,” she continued coolly. “Have you been exchanging letters with your family?” asked Aida, growing rather tired from the irritated vibe given off by Ivy. “How are you liking Gryffindor?”

Aida clasped her hands together and stared out the window. She wondered if there was anything interesting going on in the greenhouses or on the grounds. Aida wanted to go play in the forest but she knew it was forbidden. Instead she looked over at Ivy and tried to understand why she was so irritated.

Ivy's eyebrows shot upwards when Aida squatted down in front of her. In truth, there was nowhere else to sit, but squatting seemed like a strange thing to do. She could have leaned against the wall, or just stood there... Ivy tore her gaze away from the absurd sitting position and stared at her hands uncomfortably at the other girl's next words. What to say to that?

Ivy wasn't particularly sympathetic with, well, anyone, and she didn't quite know what to say to the whole 'running away' thing. She was glad that the other girl asked a question next, and answered, "Yes, I have been." Ivy didn't elaborate, and answered the next question shortly after. "It's alright, I suppose. How's Ravenclaw?"

Aida had finally taken notice of her prompt for conversation, and relieved, Ivy continued. "Where are you from?" Perhaps the answer would explain the accent? It was hard to understand the Ravenclaw's thick accent, and Ivy couldn't quite place it. She had grown up in the English countryside, and her father was from Wales and her mother from France, but she had caught onto the typical posh English accent, with a hint of something akin to French - something easy to understand.

Aida observed Ivy as she responded, noticing Ivy becoming at last a little relieved. There it is, thought Aida. I’m not going to be able to have a real conversation with this person either, am I? I will be locked into tedious small talk until we both go numb in the head. However rude Aida’s thought may have been, she showed no sign of it in her tone or on her face. Instead, Aida mustered all the friendliness and patience she could, replying “Ravenclaw is fine I guess. The students in the dorm also like books and they don't make fun of me for reading all the time. I’m from Glennfinan, in the Highlands north of here. It’s more mountainous than around Hogwarts but otherwise there are a lot of similarities. I grew up in the countryside so my accent is thick and my Gaelic is sharp, but I’m ready to see other parts of the world now. How about you, are you from the city or from the countryside?” Aida thought it would be rude to presume anything based on Ivy’s attire or demeanor. Aida herself was quite tired of being judged by her outward appearance and mannerisms. Still, she thought, there’s always something interesting about somebody. Everybody has something I can learn from them. Regardless of how gregarious her expression and voice, Aida’s hands grew restless and began fidgeting with the pearl necklace strung about her neck. "Where is home for you?" asked Aida, no longer sure how she would answer her own question.
