Skylar walks into the Charms classroom, excitement buzzing through the air. She moves through the crowd of students to go to her usual seat, when she stops short.

Oh.

There was someone else. In her seat.

Skylar narrows her eyes at the figure. She has brown, straight hair and her green robes indicate she is a Slytherin. Skylar shrugs, she is probably a new student. It does not matter much anyway. Skylar just really likes her routine and plans, so it just threw her off a little.

Skylar walks up to the girl and slides into the seat next to her, because the next best thing from her seat is the seat next to it. She offers the girl a smile but she does not return it. Okay. Maybe she did not notice or something.

Skylar is about to speak to the girl when the professor calls for everyone's attention. Oh well, she can do it later.

They were learning about the Dancing Feet Spell, which Skylar was already familiar with from previous lessons. That is why when the professor asks a question, Skylar automatically raises her hand and answers.

“The Dancing Feet Spell is a spell that makes the object seem like it is dancing. However, it is just the muscles in the legs spasming uncontrollably and -” she pauses as she hears a scoff beside her. “Um - it - it works on anything that has legs.” Skylar stammers out at the end. The professor continues on with the lesson as Skylar's face slowly burns with embarrassment. She glares at the girl next to her, who was suddenly intently listening to the lesson. What the bloody hell was that? What was that scoff supposed to mean? Skylar huffs a bit and focuses on the lesson. Slytherins, she thought to herself.

As the lesson continues, the professor asks another question. Skylar raises her hand to answer only to see the girl next to her roll her eyes again. What is her problem? Skylar ignores her and answers the professor, only to hear the girl next to her let out a very deliberate sigh. For Merlin's sake, Skylar groans internally, did that girl fall off the bed this morning?

She turns to the girl and pokes her in the arm.

“Hey, what's your deal? Because it would be a lot less annoying if you can stop scoffing at me like I personally offended you. It's getting on my nerves.”

I walked into Charms class, eying the best, isolated seat away from the buzzing crowd.
I noticed the perfect one next to the window, offering a beautiful view on the castle's ground and on the class.
I sat down and waited for the other... humans to do the same.

As I got hold of my books and quills, I noticed a heavy presence next to me. Someone was sitting right there.
Her crimson red robes alerted me that a Gryffondor girl, sat next to me.
______
Tessie didn't look up immediately, letting the silence exist. Her fingers rest lightly on the desk, still and composed with a hint of an already exasperance at the stranger.

Eventually, she lifts her eyes slightly, her head resting still against her arm. She does not stare, she observes. Carefully without any words escaping her mouth.

A smile is offered to her but she does not return it. Not out of shyness but deep disinterest, she knew this girl had nothing to offer her.

During her few weeks at Hogwarts, Tessie learnt that smiles are invitations, open doors to one's mind: a weakness, an easy way to vulnerability nodoubts

She returns her attention to the front of the classroom before the moment can become anything more revolting.

The professor begins speaking, introducing the Dancing Feet Spell.
Tes already knows it, such a useless spells to teach first years. She wanted to learn something concrete, something powerful, not a "Dancing feet Spell".

Still, she listens, maybe an interesting variation will come across.
A sudden question was raised and beside her, Skylar raises her hand eagerly.
Tes does not turn her head, but she listens.

“The Dancing Feet Spell is a spell that makes the object seem like it is dancing. However, it is just the muscles in the legs spasming uncontrollably and-”

Tes let out a small scoff
It escapes before she stops it, imprecision and inaccuracy irritates her.
She does not look at Skylar afterward. Does not acknowledge it. Her gaze remains forward, expression neutral, as if nothing happened at all.
“Um - it - it works on anything that has legs.”
Interesting... Tessie thoughts she looked down on the table hiding the smirk she has ben holding for too long.

The lesson continues.
Skylar raises her hand again, and again, and again.

Tes closes her eyes briefly rolling her head back. This new girl was so predictable

She rolls her eyes, just enough to release the frustration building beneath her emotionless appearance
Another answer. Another pitiful attempt.
Tes lets out a slow sigh now clearly irritated by her lack of academic precision.
She knew the basics, Tessie acknowledged that, but she didn't know the depth, showing off what a five years old troll could've came up with, is honestly not impressive, there was nothing to be proud about.

Then she felt a poke against her arm.
Tes stills, her jaw clenching. The audacity of this girl.

She turns her head slowly to face her.
Her expression is calm. Empty. Composed beyond what most students her age could manage.

“You’re distracting yourself.” she said sharply"You especially, should listen."
“Hey, what's your deal? Because it would be a lot less annoying if you can stop scoffing at me like I personally offended you. It's getting on my nerves.”

“If you’re going to answer, you should focus on answering correctly.” she said facing forward,“Not quickly.”

She turns her body back to the front before anything more can be said. The conversation, in her mind, is already over.

“If you’re going to answer, you should focus on answering correctly. Not quickly.”

Skylar feels as if she was verbally slapped in the face. She was quite literally using the definition given to them. How else was she supposed to answer? She can go in depth and blabber all on what she knows but that is not what the professor expects. That is not what other students expect. They want a simple definition, one that is easy to digest into their minds and get a move on. However, she still gives the Slytherin a smile and nod, not letting her real emotions show and breaking her happy facade.

But inside, Skylar was seething. She could not remember the last time she felt this mad. Every day, every time, she is always seen as happy, joyful, and optimistic. But this girl… she was one of those people.

Ones that think they are above and different from all else, ones that only talk to those they can benefit from, ones that believe that they are, and always will be, right. Arrogant, prideful, and vain. Why? Who knows. Usually, Skylar would try and make an effort to understand them. Unfortunately, her mind is currently not too happy with the said person.

But, if Skylar was good at anything, it was analyzing. Her other house was Ravenclaw, afterall. She remembers everything. Every detail. So, despite seemingly being interested in the lesson, Skylar recalls every single memory she has. She also discreetly glances at the Slytherin from time to time. Not at her face, no, that is too obvious. Skylar scans her papers, her bag, and the way she holds herself.

Tes Cadell is her name. A new student in the class, it seems, as she does not even have half the homework she should be doing. The way she holds herself indicates she is a pure-blood. Strict, composed, but detached. Skylar hears whispers in the halls of Tes’s “feared” reputation, which she cannot help but internally laugh at. She knows much about the Cadell family as well, given that Skylar’s dad also works for the Ministry. The Cadells are all pure-bloods, much to her knowledge, and they are also all very stoic and rigid.

Wait a minute.

Tes’s father works for the Ministry. That means that she must have visited the Ministry at least once, which also means that Skylar could have met her before. The gears in Skylar’s head are turning into overdrive. She maintains a pleasant expression as the professor continues, but her mind is putting together the puzzle pieces.

She remembers.

A little girl who dresses so formally for someone her age. A little girl who seems disinterested in everything around her. A little girl who carries that god-forsaken black snake around everywhere.

Finally, class is finished. “Well, that was quite a lesson, was it not?” Skylar chirps, a wide smile plasters her face. Tes looks at her with mild annoyance and proceeds to pack her things. Hm. Oh well, she tried. Almost as if a switch was flipped, the smile completely disappears from Skylar’s face. Her demeanor changes into something more calculating and cold. People like Tes do not deserve her kindness, so why should she try?

“Now, Tessie, that’s not quite polite. You would think someone with all your bravado and education would have more manners, but it seems you like to be special, don’t you?

You may see me as an airhead, Tes Cadell, but I can assure you I am far from it. You believe my answers to be simple, but why should I waste my breath and share my knowledge? Nobody cares that much in a First Year Charms lesson, Tes. You and I can go on and on about complex spells, but what does that do?

So, perhaps you can take your arrogance and pride somewhere else, Tessie. You may be a parselmouth with pure-blood lineage, but you are a nobody until you actually do something worthwhile. All of us are nobodies. You are not special.”

With that, Skylar plasters on another smile, as if nothing ever happened. “Say hello to Medusa for me, will you? I haven’t seen your black snake around at all.” She gives a sarcastic little wave and turns away from Tes. But if Skylar is being honest, she knew nothing about Tes. She only knew about her nickname and Medusa, her snake, through word of mouth and rumors. She might not even be right. But, one thing about Skylar, is that she can be a damn good liar.

"Well, that was quite a lesson, was it not?
Why is she even talking? Why is she smiling like that?
I looked at her without saying a word, just packing my stuff away in my bag.
“Now, Tessie, that’s not quite polite. You would think someone with all your bravado and education would have more manners, but it seems you like to be special, don’t you?"
"I don't recall ever giving you permission to call me that, blue head" I say putting my bag over my shoulder, "I don't try to be special unlike what you're trying to prove. It happens naturally. I don't seek for attention, but if I was, you'd know. Something to remember, you can even write it down in your little note book." I was now getting ready to leave but she blocked the way.
This girl I swear.
"You may see me as an airhead, Tes Cadell, but I can assure you I am far from it. You believe my answers to be simple, but why should I waste my breath and share my knowledge?"

“Holding back knowledge isn’t strategy. It's stupid, why are you even contributing in the first place? You seek attention because you don't have any, it's quite miserable really.” I said gripping the back of my chair with firm. (OOC: lowk dont know the word lol)
“Excuses are rarely impressive Blue head. I care and that's all everyone needs to know”
"So, perhaps you can take your arrogance and pride somewhere else, Tessie.
I scoffed, well isn't she funny that one
"You may be a parselmouth with pure-blood lineage, but you are a nobody until you actually do something worthwhile. All of us are nobodies. You are not special.”
" Awhh... You think we're all the same? That's comforting isn't it? I smirked at her poor attmept to put me down, fake pouting.
"If I was "ordinary" you wouldn't try to convince me that we're all equal. You don't know me yet lady, I'm quite very special" I say slowly, letting the words sink in, "And you'll see that soon" I continued in a reassuring tone.
I moved her out of the way and I barely made it two steps that she speaks again.
Why can't she just shut up. I turn around and she had that annoying little smile glued to her face
“Say hello to Medusa for me, will you?
That's it. She had no right to do that.
I haven’t seen your black snake around at all.”
"Well be grateful you didn't. Medusa doesn't rush an audience, you'll see that soon. In fact, it's strange you're taking interest in my snake, do you need something to fear? Adrenalin? You don't need to look really far Skylar, I'm right here. I don't forget"
After that, I let the class, I was so furious with this girl, can you even call her a girl? Even a human? This creature?

OOC: Oh, things are getting fun. We are definitely yapping with this.

“Holding back knowledge isn’t strategy. It's stupid, why are you even contributing in the first place? You seek attention because you don't have any, it's quite miserable really.”

Skylar cocked her eyebrows at that. She can't help but let out a laugh. She has a perfectly happy family that loves her. However, it sounds a bit like Tes is self projecting. Hm. If that were true, Skylar might start pitying her.

“Excuses are rarely impressive Blue head. I care and that's all everyone needs to know.” Skylar was really trying not to laugh right now. Blue head. What type of insult is that supposed be? What is she, five? Man, at least have some creativity.

"Awhh... You think we're all the same? That's comforting isn't it?" Oh definitely not. Skylar would not want to be ever categorized as same with someone like Tes. She could not help but feel a little disgusted at the fake pout Tes put on. She has no idea what that pout was supposed to do, but it only made Tes seem even more childish in Skylar's eyes.

"If I was "ordinary" you wouldn't try to convince me that we're all equal. You don't know me yet lady, I'm quite very special, and you'll see that soon." Skylar squints at that. Oh, Tes was definitely special. In fact, Skylar doesn't think she ever met someone so obnoxious in her life. She is as unique as she says she is for sure. Skylar was so caught up with the realization that she was basically talking to a child that she misses half of Tes's little monologue.

"... In fact, it's strange you're taking interest in my snake, do you need something to fear? Adrenalin? You don't need to look really far Skylar, I'm right here. I don't forget."

Skylar really can't help it anymore. She bursts out laughing. Oh, for Merlin's sake. 'I'm right here, I don't forget.' Really? Dear lord, she sounds like a bully in some coming of age story. Perhaps some 'tough' song will play in the background as she walks out, glitter and sparkles everywhere. Skylar's abdomen hurts from how hard she's laughing. Tes may think she controls her emotions well and hides behind a cold mask of indifference, but her face is quite literally the most expressive Skylar has seen. And she looks livid. Skylar finally stands up straight when Tes stalks away, fuming probably.

Do you need something to fear? Skylar can't help but shake her head at that. Even if she needed fear, Tes Cadell will not be the one to give it to her. Because this is merely a game. Tes is a child. She thinks herself as grand and feared, but in reality she is still some first year student. Not that Skylar is any better, hell no. She's a first year, too. The only difference is that Skylar knows that this little feud they are having is nothing. In the grand picture of things, this little argument is a just speck out of everything to come. Tes, however, is too short-sighted and enamored with herself to realize that. She truly thinks that her thoughts matter and that she can affect Skylar in anyway. Ha.

Skylar smirks as she heads towards her next class. Looks like she is about to spend the rest of her year rage baiting that egotistical Slytherin and knock some sense into her. Tes can try to play checkers, but Skylar is playing chess.

So when the next day rolls around, Skylar makes sure to get there earlier and takes back her seat. She hears footsteps come in and smiles as she senses who is behind her. The one and only Tes 'Sissy' Cadell.

Let the games begin.

The next day, I had Charms again.
Ugh.
Which meant another lesson with that girl.
I got ready and walked through the long stone corridors, my footsteps echoing faintly. The castle was unusually quiet at this hour. It was peaceful and quite pleasant.

When I stepped into the classroom, I immediately noticed the streak of vibrant blue hair sitting in my seat. Or rather, what had been my seat yesterday.

Of course.

I wasn’t surprised. If anything, it was exactly the sort of petty move I expected from her. Childish. Transparent. Almost… disappointing.

Still, if she wanted to start something, I had no problem seeing it through to the end.

I walked over without hesitation and sat down right beside her. Close enough to make it clear that whatever point she thought she was making had already failed. If she wanted to irritate me, I could return the favour (#britishspelling) just as easily if not better

Just silence that stretched heavier than any insult.
Then I started the work as if she weren’t even there.

Because the truth was, I had nothing to say to her.

And if she thought yesterday had gotten under my skin, she was about to learn something very important.
My thoughts about her were suddenly interrupted when I read the last line of the worksheet.
I think she was working at the same pace because we looked at each other in horror.
A group project.
No.
There is no way.
Charms for Beginners

The Enchanted Dialogue

Homework task: With your assigned partner seated beside you, you are to use your knowledge of charms along with this textbook to enchant an object capable of performing a debate.
-Carefully plan a script for the debate, including the arguments, counterarguments, and timing.
-Determine which charms will animate the object, project speech, and convey gestures or expressions during the debate.
Both partners must contribute equally to the magical and script elements, and the final performance will be graded on coordination, clarity, and creativity.
The enchanted object must complete the debate without further wand intervention once the sequence begins.

Skylar looks at Tes in horror and sees the sentiment is shared. Group project. Normally, Skylar would not mind working in a group. After all, it is a new opportunity to make friends. However, usually the people she is paired up with aren't selfish pricks she has a rivalry with.

Skylar mentally kicks herself, because even though Tes basically started it, Skylar still dug her own grave because of her refusal to back down. She breathes in and out as she mentally prepares to have another conversation with Tes. She debates whether she should offer the olive branch, call an end to their fight, and just move on with their project. However, chances are Tes is going to give her that whole "I'm a pureblood and you are no use to me" type of play, and Skylar is going to resort to getting under her skin to get rid of her superiority complex. How joyful.

"Okay, I think we can both agree on one thing: this group project is going to be hell. There really isn't a nice way to put this. So, we have a few options.

One, we can talk through our misunderstandings, apologize to each other, ignore the fact we basically became straight up enemies on first sight, and go holding hands off into the sunset of rainbows and cupcakes.

Two, which is more realistic, we call a temporary truce, do our parts of the project, and never talk to each other again after we finish.

Third, we absolutely decimate each other and fight the whole duration of our partnership, get nothing done except for light the fire hate, and become sworn enemies for the rest of eternity."

Skylar glances at Tes and lets out an exasperated sigh. "Well, since you are still looking at me like I'm some pest that chewed up your clothes, I'm going to assume we the first option is a no. I don't know about you Tes, but I care about my grades a lot more than whatever is going on with you. I will do the whole project myself and slap your name on at the end if I have to.

Or, we can work together diplomatically and put this rivalry between us on hold. And don't give me that whole 'You aren't important enough for me to have a feud with' type of response, because even someone blind can see how much you dislike me."

Skylar then turns towards Tes expectantly. Tes can jab at her all she wants, but if it is at the cost of her perfect standing grades, then Tes is going to have to sleep with one eye open. If that snake even sleeps.

I was too stunned to speak (The woman was too stunned to speak ahhh project)
I think she was speaking because she suddenly stopped to look at me and started throwing words at my face again.
Then click
"Finished?" I asked after she gave me weird options.
Cupcakes and rainbows really? Is she five?
She was busy death staring me (in quite a funny way) so I decided to talk
"Let's see. Option 1. Absolutely not, I don't even know why you suggested it, you're quite naive it makes me almost feel... bad for you.
Option 2. A truce? I don’t make truces. I decide when something isn’t worth my time. You’re not someone I’d bother fighting properly, you’ve barely been an inconvenience, you talk about it like we've been through war, blood and anguish. If this is your version of control, keep fighting for it, I'd hate to see you lose.. that.
I replied sarcastically
I breathed deeply and carried on, still in an emotionless manner. I must say that all her vibrant emotions made me tired just by hearing her voice.
"Finally, option 3. Eternity is a long tiem to embarras yourself. I don't mind but I'm afraid it won't be productive for you. You'd burn out long before I do, which I won't. Plus, you won't enjoy how it turns out, I don't fight I'll just terminate you"
I stopped for a brief moment,
"Stay useful and we won't have a problem. You see my report card is full of Os and from what I've seen from you, I'm affraid you will bring that average down so I'm tempted to do the whole project by myself."
"I don't know about you Tes, but I care about my grades a lot more than whatever is going on with you. I will do the whole project myself and slap your name on at the end if I have to."
"You're going to make us fail if you do it alone" I replied calmly, my head still resting on my arm.
"And don't give me the 'You aren't important enough for me to have a feud with' type of response, because even someone blind can see how much you dislike me."
What? She's clearly confused between importance and attention
" I don't need you to be important to dislike you, you'd be pleased to hear. I promise you that you haven't earned that level of attention and there's a reason for that. Little advice, you don't want my attention unless you're stupid"
Well, I believe that settles it. The conversation ends the moment the bell rings, cutting through whatever pointless back-and-forth was left hanging between us. I don’t wait for her to say anything else, there’s nothing worth hearing anyway. I gather my things slowly. By the time I stand, I’ve already moved on. Whatever this is between us? It’s paused, not finished. And when I walk out, I don’t look back.
