𝓙t was a rather cold afternoon on a Friday. Samantha had just finished her last class of the week, Potions, and couldn't wait to get some fresh air after her some of her classmates made their concoctions smell rather moldy instead of musky like it was supposed to. She hastily made her way out of the dungeon and towards the courtyard. This morning, there had only laid a measly few millimeters of snow, but by now, the ground was covered in a thick layer of it. The girl stared up at the sky as more snowflakes swirled down, some landing on her face.

She opened her baby blue shoulder bag to retrieve the scarf she stuffed in there this morning alongside her books before wrapping it tightly around her neck. The only thing not warm right now were her fingertips. They felt like they were about to freeze off at any moment. And, to make it all worse, one of the older students passing by had thought it was a great idea to start a snowball fight with one of his friends. Unfortunately, the snowball targeted at his friend's back flew past it and hit Samantha on the side of her face instead, momentarily covering her cheek in a thin layer of snow. She gasped at the cold sensation before wiping away the remaining snowflakes with her hand.

Her eyes flickered over to the older Gryffindor boy who threw the snowball, meant for his friend. He shrugged with a half-apologetic look before crouching down to create a new snowball. In any other situation, Samantha would simply ignore whatever childish antics were going on in the courtyard whenever snow had fallen down. But now, after feeling a bit personally attacked, she figured taking part in the activity could be quite fun after such a long week. She crouched down just as the other boy had done to create a small snowball with her hands, her fingers now feeling like small icicles. After tossing the snowball from one hand to the other, she scanned the courtyard for anyone she could throw it at. The two older boys weren't really an option as they would most likely team up and absolutely destroy the young girl in a snowball fight. Samantha's eyes cast over the students passing by, hoping to find someone closer to her age or height that she could target.

The particular Friday afternoon held no meaning for the twelve-year-old girl, Maisie. It was just a regular day of class after class. The ringing of the bell signalled the end of a week's lessons, accompanied by the sighs of relief and an odd 'whoop' or two as she and her classmates packed their books into their bags. Her last lesson was Transfiguration, on the fourth floor. In the morning, there had been only a thin sheet of snow, but as the day progressed, the snow got thicker and thicker. Most students had spent their Transfiguration looking out of the tall windows, in awe of the thick and steady snowfall. Hushed conversations were held as students made plans to have snowball fights and ambush their friends. But Maisie did not plan to stay outside in the yards in the freezing cold January weather long, wishing only to be in front of the rosy fireplace in their basement common room. Yet as she went down to the ground floor for the staircase downstairs, even she could not resist going outside.

With her dark green satchel slung over one shoulder, and her hands in the thick gloves she kept in her robe pockets for the winter stuffed into her robe sleeves, Maisie trudged through the thick snow in the courtyard. She told herself she was just going to go out through one end and go in the other. Maisie had not planned to go outside, not with a full day's lesson indoors, so she hadn't packed a winter hat or a scarf, so she was shivering. A few groups of students were throwing snowballs at each other, and Maisie had to dart to the right in order to avoid being hit by a rogue ball of snow.

The length of the courtyard wasn't big, and Maisie was nearing the other side. She was thinking about the warmness of the insulated castle and the warm fireplace in the Hufflepuff common room she would soon feel, when she locked eyes with a girl standing not far away. Her heart did a double take, when her eyes traveled down to the snowball in her hands, and the determination in her eyes. Maisie whiled back her head, hoping there was another figure standing behind her—a friend of that girl's, perhaps, the "real" person she was aiming the snowball at. But when there wasn't anyone standing behind her, Maisie realized the ball was meant for her. Still, she pointed a finger at herself, and said, "Me?"

Chuckling internally, she quickly bent down and scooped some snow into her hands, the snow clumping on the wool material. She knew it would soon turn into ice, and make her hands cold, yet she could not resist. "Oh no you don't!" Maisie called, and threw the snowball onto the girl's legs. She did not know how she'd respond, and thought it wise to hit somewhere that won't hurt or cause damage to personal belongings, like books.

What it was about the snow that made her so happy, Jrue could not describe. Whether it was sliding down the hills with her friends back home or simply staying inside the castle as the delicate flakes fluttered through the air, the snowy season was truly one of the best parts of the year. The castle was starting to get a little cramped. Perhaps starting wasn't the right word, truly. It had been crowded for quite some time. But with the end of the Christmas Holiday, something truly felt a less spacious, and more... cramped. And what better to relieve that cramped feel with a walk in the wintery wonderland.

With a baby pink scarf wrapped around her neck and a soft plain black cloak draped around her legs, Jrue strolled about her dorm, truly deciding whether or not a snowy outing was meant for her. Her dorm mate wasn't there, she'd left earlier that morning. Jrue hadn't thought to ask Maisie where she was going. Maybe she had classes, or perhaps the girl just wanted to take a walk. Which, now that she had thought about it, was definitely the course she wanted to take today.

The soft crunch of the snow beneath her brown boots was satisfying to hear in the somber quiet of the winter day. She eyed students lunch and meeting with their friends, a sweet smile spread across her face. Flakes dappled her cheeks, the cold stinging her warm complexion lightly. She strolled down a path from an entrance of the castle, making her way into the courtyard. Jrue blinked softly in the sun right as a snowball flew past her torso and into another girl- Sam!

Jrue whipped her head over to look at her friend, legs now doused in snow. She turned the other way to see Maisie, snow dappling her hair and her shoulders as it fell from the light filled sky. Jrue choked, blinking around at the scene she just walked into. She slunk backwards softly, waving at the two. "Don't mind me. Just uh... passing through-" She flattened her mouth into an amused line, hands up in the air as she moved slowly.

Nico spent the whole day longingly staring out the castle’s windows at the flurry of snowflakes beyond it. Their hometown, further south, rarely got such intense snowfalls. They’d gotten used to seeing the roads nearby only delicately covered. For a brief moment it appeared cute, as if the world got sprinkled by powdered sugar with utmost care, but it would soon melt into masses of unsightly, wet mud. Such depressing views made it difficult to properly enjoy winter, as much as they’d love to.

That is why this time, Nico couldn’t turn away from admiring the rare occurrence outside. The flakes got bigger and more in number with each second, quickly shrouding the miserable, dead grass with layers of pristine fluff, just begging to be picked up. As it was still classtime, it wasn’t yet tainted by the tons of footsteps that were sure to emerge as soon as the students caught a break. As much as they appreciated the clear canvas, Nico was no different - the canvas exists to be utilised, after all. So, they tuned out their teacher and started planning the variety of snow sculptures they could soon create. It was their favourite passtime, when they had the chance of course.

As soon as the class ended, they rushed downstairs. There was no need to visit their common room - the winter robe provided sufficient warmth, and they were delighted to find a pair of gloves in their bag, which past Nico must’ve put there for emergencies such as this one. A hat was deemed unnecessary as the unruly mass of hair on their head, while not particularly appealing, helped shield their face and ears from the cold to some degree. Besides, they were in a hurry to find the best spot to begin their project.

They paced around the courtyard hoping to find an appropriately large bit of land. After a few minutes however, they changed their strategy - the further they got, the less of a chance passing people would admire the finished product. If it was somewhere near the entrance it was sure to grab attention, and so they turned back to the beginning, to a small clearing they saw earlier.

Tragically, in the few minutes they were gone it seemed to have been taken over by a couple of girls; both of them, snowballs in hand, ready to fire. A mischievous smug crept up Nico’s face as they watched the beginning of the fight - they would take back their turf, even by force. Another target appeared, blissfully unaware of Nico’s presence as she began speaking to the other two; the opportunity was too perfect to skip. They stealthily picked up a bit of snow, and sent the ball flying right into her back. As they made themselves known, they exclaimed: “Hey! This is my spot!”
