my hs had a choice between LATIN and SPANISH. My brother is exempt from both...but I wasn't. I took Spanish. My sister took Latin. I skipped a month or so in Spanish 1, hated that teacher and loved Spanish 2 (not that i could repeat exactly what was said...) because she was so nice, so openminded and caring.

My sister only took latin 1 and 2 for medical purposes given that was her hs path, my hs path was criminal justice. She hated that all they watched were movies with latin captions.
