And Then There Were 3

The first day of Hogwarts classes in the Potion Hall with @Zephyr Deakin and @Julia Evans

It was the first day of classes at Hogwarts, and I was finding it really hard to adapt to this new life. Plus, the castle was absolutely enormous, and I was having a lot of trouble finding my way around. Luckily, I was able to follow some people who, like me, had Potions in their first period, so I followed them through the corridors and was able to find my way to the Potions classroom, which would remain the same all year. This morning, I went down to the Great Hall feeling a bit stressed. It was rare for me to eat away from my parents and family, and I was a little tense at the thought of it being like this for three months.
After eating, I went up to my dormitory, put on my uniform, packed all my school supplies in my satchel, and made sure I had my wand. Then I went down to the common room to look for some of the first-years I'd seen during the Sorting Ceremony. Some of them, like me, had Potions first period, so I followed them down the corridors, and here I was, outside the classroom. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Potions class. It reminded me a bit of strange experiments with explosions, or a cooking recipe where you have to follow a precise list of ingredients and manage to mix them correctly to make a potion.
The professor arrived, greeted us, and asked us to come in. I was a little lost; I didn't know many people, and above all, I was afraid of the others.
My shyness prevents me from approaching others, and I had no idea who to sit next to. A boy and a girl next to me seemed to be in the same state as me, so I made up my mind and headed towards a table, saying to the other two people:

"There's... the last table free. Would you... please sit with... me?"

I rarely spoke to the others, but I was afraid we'd get told off if we didn't sit down at the same time as the other students. Some knew each other, and others didn't at all, but everyone had found a seat, except for the three of us, so I had to offer them a seat.

Zephyr’s morning started early as per usual. There was also a moment where he forgot where he was then he remembered he’s in his new school. Hogwarts. He dressed quickly, wore his uniform robes on and checked his bag more than once. Wand? Yes. Books? Yes. He kept thinking he was forgetting something, even though it’s not the case.

He followed other first years through the corridors, the castle twisted and turned which confused the heck out of him due to moving stairs and stopping where he didn’t expect them. When he finally reached the Potions classroom, he felt relieved and exasperated already. For someone reason, Potions made him nervous. It sounded like cooking but with instructions to follow. He kept thinking about cauldrons exploding and professors getting angry.

The room smelled strange, and another thing to worry about, he didn’t know where to sit. Everyone seemed to move so fast, finding friends and places at tables. Suddenly, a girl spoke up, who looked just as nervous as he felt, offering the last free table. He was relieved that someone else offered so he nodded quickly.

“Uh, yeah, would like to join you.” walking over to the table. He set his bag down and smiled. “Thank you for offering.” He remembered his manners. “I’m Zephyr Deakin, nice to meet you…?” He offered his hand for a handshake hoping he didn’t look too awkward. He was not sure how Potions would go, but at least he’s not going to sit alone anymore.

Julia was estatic. Way. Too. Much. It was her first proper day at Hogwarts! How could she not be excited? Her day started out pretty well. After having a wonderful sleep in her new bed, Julia wore her Ravenclaw robe – feeling quite proud – and went down to the great wall for a breakfast. That was if it could be called breakfast. There was so much food, you could barely see the 4 tables. Yes, Julia had seen the feast the night before – when she got sorted –, but she hadn't expected it to be like that everyday. Hogwarts was definitely becoming her favourite place. After her breakfast, Julia dug around her bag and checked what was on her schedule. She had... Potions! That was amazing! It was one of the lessons Julia was looking forward to. Actually, she had been looking forward to all the classes. But still. Julia gathered all her stuff, put it into her bag, and started making her way to the potions class, which was in the dungeons. "I wonder what we'll learn. I hope it's interesting," she thought. Hopefully, they also made a potion in class. She had seen her mother make a few, and there was no doubt that it would be fun. Challenging, but fun. As Julia walked, she also addressed the thought that had been nagging her since she arrived. Will she make any friends? What if nobody wanted to be friends with her? What if people thought she was weird? The conspicuous thoughts kept swirling through her head, making her feel almost sick. Julia took a deep breath, shook her head, then scolded herself, "Nothing like that will happen. Think positive!". She continued walking, looking forward to her lesson, but little did she know that a lot more than just learning was about to happen.
————————————————————————————————————————
"Wow," Julia breathed. It was amazing. She had finally reached the potions classroom in the dungeons, and it was even better than she'd imagined! The vast room was filled with herbal aromas, and unlike other classrooms, there wasn't a table for the students, only workstations and wooden chairs. The seats were arranged around each workstation, and each of them had a faucet to get the water, likely to be used while brewing their potion. Several cupboards were standing along the edge of the room, containing – Julia assumed – equipment, ingredients, or maybe literature related to potions. At the other side of the room, there were windows made of sturdy glass where you could see a few magical underwater creatures. At the front of the class, there was a workstation for Professor Lesmana. The blackboard, behind the professor's workstation, was set in a way for it to be visible to everyone. Aside from that, there was a door to the professor's office, and shelves on the wall with neatly placed jars full of potion ingredients and some other stuff. Julia took all of this in, then looked around to find a seat. Most of the seats were taken, and only she, a girl who was a Ravenclaw, and another boy, who was a Hufflepuff, were left. Julia was just searching for a free spot when the girl said, "There's... the last table free. Would you... Please sit with... me?" The girl looked a little stressed, scared, and shy, which Julia could totally relate to. Even though she was, and looked, excited and happy, underneath, she was pretty much feeling the same as the girl. Before she could answer, the boy said, “Uh, yeah, would like to join you,” walking over to the table. He set his bag down and smiled. “Thank you for offering. I’m Zephyr Deakin, nice to meet you…?” He offered his hand for a handshake, and Julia took it, smiled, and said, "Hello! I'm Julia, Julia Evans. And you are?" she asked, addressing the girl. Maybe Julia would make some friends! Nevertheless, at least she wasn't alone.

And Then There Were 3
The first day of Hogwarts classes in the Potion Hall with @Zephyr Deakin and @Julia Evans

The young boy accepted my request and walked towards me, introducing himself as he did so. His name was Zephyr Deakin. From his uniform, I could tell he was in Hufflepuff. I remembered that during the Sorting Ceremony, Hufflepuff was presented as the house of patient and loyal people.
Although I doubted it from his face, Zephyr might just be a patient boy! The girl I had invited to sit with us accepted with a big smile. She introduced herself in turn. Her name was Julia Evans, and she was in the same house as me. I remembered her from the Reparation dinner; she had been sitting not far from me. I had found her very composed and kind-hearted. Then she turned to me and asked my name. I replied in a timid and very hesitant voice:

"My name is Lili-Blue... Lili-Blue Forester... Thank you... for agreeing to join me..."

At that moment, I cursed my stutter and how quickly I blushed. I was ashamed of it.
Especially in front of people my own age, they seemed nice and maybe they could be my friends... If I made a bad impression on them, I would have stayed alone for a long time...

It was a bit awkward just standing there in the middle of the class but Zephyr was glad when a girl invited him. If he's going to sit alone, it would have been worse. She introduced herself to him as Lili-Blue so he did the same courtesy. In doing so, he noticed her cheeks turned red when he shook her hand. He was assuming she was also nervous and worried like him. “Uh...yeah, sure. I didn’t know where to sit if you didn't ask me.” He hoped his voice sounded normal, it was hard for someone who's not great at talking to new people. Nevertheless, but he tried to smile anyway despite feeling stiff. “Nice to meet you, Lili Blue. You can just call me Zeph.”

He sat down beside her and put his backpack under the table as he looked around the classroom. It was darker there, he was not sure if that's to be expected for potion class like this. The air smelled weird too, a combination of old books, herbs, something minty and burnt. There were also cauldrons set up and seeing that, he didn't know what to feel about it. Is it the same as cooking or is it more like Chemistry with magic?

He checked his assigned cauldron wondering how this works, if it's going to start bubbling on its own. Do we light it with a spell? What if he messes it up? What if it explodes? He was trying not to think of angry professors who would yell at him on his first day. That would be a disaster, not to mention humiliating. He was too busy pondering about a lot of things when another girl introduced herself to him.

Zephyr smiled at her, "Julia, it's a pleasure to meet you." He shook her hand gently. "I hope you two won't mind me asking but are you two...err, halfblood or pureblood? You're familiar with all these?" It's a lot to take in for a first day. He gestured toward the shelves full of jars. “I have no idea how this class works.”

Julia was making good friends. Sure, it felt a little weird, but good to. She sat down as the girl said, "My name is Lili-Blue... Lili-Blue Forester... Thank you... for agreeing to join me.." She stuttered a bit, sounding really nervous. She blushed, and Julia was pretty sure she was ashamed of herself, even though she shouldn't have been. "You're Welcome! That's a very pretty name", Julia said. She heard Zephyr say, “Uh...yeah, sure. I didn’t know where to sit if you didn't ask me.” He smiled, looking a little stiff, and continued, “Nice to meet you, Lili Blue. You can just call me Zeph.”. Seeing them both uncomfortable and nervous helped Julia's feeling. She didn't take any pleasure out of it, but it helped to know she wasn't the only one a little lost. Julia looked around, waiting for the lesson to begin. She noticed the air smelled different from when she first entered the class. Now it was a weird mix of old books, herbs, something minty and burnt. Julia was lost in her thoughts until Zephyr smiled at her and said, "Julia, it's a pleasure to meet you." He shook her hand gently. "I hope you two won't mind me asking but are you two...err, halfblood or pureblood? You're familiar with all these?"He gestured toward the shelves full of jars and Julia saw his confusion. She checked her assignment, and despite seeing her mom make potions several times she had no idea ho this all worked. Thankfully, she wasn't alone. Just then Zephyr said, “I have no idea how this class works.” He sounded so genuinely innocent and confused, Julia couldn't stop a giggle from bursting out."Don't worry", she said. "I have no idea either even though I'm wizard-born. Both my parents are half-bloods though I never really had any interaction with the Muggle world. But I'm just as lost as you. What are you?" Julia smiled and asked nervously. Was she supposed to know potions? What if she was actually behind? Why hadn't she read up on potions yet? Julia pondered over this, then decided to get some confirmation, so she turned to Lili-Blue and asked, "What about you?"

And Then There Were 3
First day of classes at Hogwarts, in the Potions Room, with @Zephyr Deakin and @Julia Evans
Zephyr announced that he was glad I'd offered him a seat because he wasn't very good at sitting. Julia watched us, amused and a little embarrassed at the same time. It must be said that Zephyr and I seemed equally shy, and Julia appeared more outgoing. Zephyr asked us if we were half-blood or Muggle-born. I didn't quite understand why he was asking, but when he explained that he didn't really know what to do in Potions class, I quickly understood. Personally, I was Muggle-born and knew nothing about Potions. It's true that it's rather difficult to grasp the concept of wizards because in my world, we talk more about cake recipes. Julia turned to me and asked what my blood was, and I stammered,

"I'm Muggle-born and I really have no idea what we do in Potions class. I feel like we're in for a real mess this lesson."

The end of my sentence was meant to be funny and ironic, but I was trembling and stuttering so much that I think the joke fell flat.
I hope our potions professor isn't going to be too strict because if we start the first class of the year with a strict professor, I'm afraid I won't pass my potions year.

Julia said both her parents were half-bloods which means when it comes to magic and the norm here, she’s got the most advantage out of the three of them. Meanwhile, Lili shared that she’s a muggle-born, therefore she has no idea about the Potions class either. So it doesn’t matter what your blood status is, they’re all newbie to potion brewing. Zephyr thought, if this class was what he imagined it to be then they’re really in for a real mess like she said. The joke was there, he could hear it in her tone, but it’s also obvious that she was worried. If he’s not wrong, there’s also panic behind her words and he understood that feeling all too well. “There’s really a chance of a real mess.” If there’s one thing he learned from his muggle school, was that if nobody ever messed up, then no one wouldn’t need a class.

Julia asked him in return what his blood status is, “I’m half-blood, my dad’s a pureblood, my mom’s a muggle. We don’t really sit around brewing potions at home or anything. This is a first for me.” Deep inside, he was also nervous. His mind was already imagining smoke, bubbling potions, and the professor scolding him. Seeing her this way, he realized he’s not the only one with issues. “I just hope the Professor is not strict. It’s the first day, maybe it’s all about learning the basics first.” Internally he added, like how not to poison themselves, or make a fool of themselves too. He smiled at the two girls, “And we’re in for a disaster, at least we will all be disasters together.” It was a joke but there’s a possibility that it would come true. “Anyway, if there’s instructions to follow, maybe we’ll survive. We can all just imagine we’re following a recipe.”

It was nice to know that other people were worried too. While Julia might have looked more outgoing and friendly, inside she was just as shy and reserved. She just tried not to show it. "I'm Muggle-born and I really have no idea what we do in Potions class. I feel like we're in for a real mess this lesson." Lili-Blue stammered. There was a joke in that sentence but it fell a little flat. Lili-Blue looked a little embarrassed, but before Julia could say anything, Zephyr voiced his thoughts too “There’s really a chance of a real mess.” There really was and the situation felt too serious, so Julia tried to add some lightness "There probably is, but best case scenario, we'll only blow up our faces" She laughed softly feeling a little self-conscious, as she listened to Zephyr's answer to her question “I’m half-blood, my dad’s a pureblood, my mom’s a muggle. We don’t really sit around brewing potions at home or anything. This is a first for me.” She thought of back home, she'd never brewed a potion before. She didn't anything about them either. "Same, like I said, I'm wizard born, but I've only ever seen my mom make potions before. I don't even know the ingredients! Though I was planning on reading up on them in the books we had...", Julia trailed off, hoping she hadn't sounded too stereotypical for a Ravenclaw. She hated having people under the wrong impression. Zephyr continued talking. “I just hope the Professor is not strict. It’s the first day, maybe it’s all about learning the basics first.” Julia sure hoped that too. Else, life would be disastrous. Zephyr probably felt the same as he smiled and said, “And we’re in for a disaster, at least we will all be disasters together.” It was a joke, but there was raw truth in it. “Anyway, if there’s instructions to follow, maybe we’ll survive. We can all just imagine we’re following a recipe.” Looking around though, Julia wasn't so sure. She didn't even know the names of the ingredients! "Well, if the instructions are just words with no visuals of ingredients, then sure nothing can go wrong", Julia said, hoping the sarcasm would keep things light.
