Meiyu clearly did not seem impressed by Harlan’s ability to sneak out, especially given the ease at which she had done so. But that was fine, instead of her third partner in crime, she found the Wampus making its path through the edge of the forest, and repeating the pattern of calling out, vocal for whatever reason it had. The parchment in its fur had been slightly decreased, other students come and gone while Meiyu had waited. Deciding on her own, Meiyu took advantage of their camo cloak, using it to attempt following the Wampus, and leaving the decision up to Harlan whether to follow. Unfortunately for Meiyu, they were so focused on the Wampus in front of them, they missed the tree branch that stuck into their path. It didn’t take her off her feet, but it certainly meant she lost sight of the Wampus for a few moments, and that was enough to lose it in the forest. Instead, she would do her best to make her way back to the edge of the Forest.

Clearly, Harlan didn’t appreciate Meiyu’s comments, blaming those who had caught him for being delayed, instead of taking the blame himself. But they had bigger fish to fry. He may not have believed that the Wampus was actually inviting them to follow like Meiyu believed, but he had no other ideas. Throwing the prefect under the bus, by letting them lead, Harlan missed the branch that had taken out his partner. He was able to successfully swerve around the unlucky Meiyu, keeping the Wampus in sight for a few more moments before he heard a sound in the bush, swirling quickly to see what it was. It would have been nothing to turn back around and get a glimpse of where the Wampus was leading, but sadly, he hadn’t noticed his untied shoes. The quick motion threw the laces in his path, and taking a step turned disastrous as he tripped and fell onto the forest floor. Just like that the Wampus disappeared from view and they would be stuck wondering the forest, hoping to find the edge with little problem where he would work to meet up with his partners in crime.

Luck seemed to be on Frederick’s side on his second attempt to sneak out of the castle after curfew. Once he was safely beyond the reach of any professors or prefects, the boy seized his chance and quickened his pace, heading toward the edge of the Forbidden Forest without looking back. He didn’t know whether Rosaline or Avery had managed to get out as well, but he figured it would be best to wait for them there.

Arriving under the quiet cover of night, he ran into Avery and smiled at her, but also felt a flicker of concern when Rosaline wasn’t with her. Avery suggested they wait a little longer to see if the last member of their group would show up, and Fred agreed without hesitation. “Of course, we have to wait for her,” he said. He wasn’t about to leave a friend behind. While they couldn’t move on, Frederick paced back and forth, not out of nerves or anxiety, but simply to keep warm, casting the occasional glance back toward the castle to see if Rosa might be on her way.

After some time had passed, Frederick finally spotted his friend approaching and greeted her with a warm smile. “Rosa! I knew you’d make it! Now we can move on, we need to think of some kind of strategy. It looks like there’s a creature prowling around the forest, and it has the same kind of fur that was stuck to the fake House Cup.” Fred gestured in the direction where he had seen other small groups of students heading, and where he believed the creature might be. “If we had a way to move through the forest without getting lost, we might be able to find some clues.”

Realizing that both girls had their camo cloaks while he did not, Fred paused to think for a moment. “If we could share a cloak, I could go into the forest with one of you, but I don’t think that would really work.” He shifted his gaze between Avery and Rosaline. “So I think I’ll walk with you up to the point just before you head deeper into the forest and wait there. If the two of you don’t come back within fifteen minutes,” Fred continued, still looking at them, “I’ll cast a Periculum so you can find your way back.”

After strategizing, Frederick walked up to the spot where he had seen the wampus slip into the forest and nodded once in encouragement. “Good luck and be careful.” He didn’t know exactly what kind of creature it was, but it looked large and dangerous, with sharp claws and teeth. “I’ll be waiting for you here.” With that, he drew his wand, gripping it firmly in his right hand as he prepared himself. The plan was not to use the spell, but if either of them got lost, he would send red sparks into the sky so they would know which direction to return.

Action: Waiting for the girls to return. Cast Periculum if they get lost.

What a shitshow, Ula couldn't help but think to herself as she finally slipped free from the Gryffindor Common Room. Turns out limping her way slowly and steadily through the Hogwarts corridors, melting into the shadows, was the way to go. She could only hope Montgomery didn't catch up to her. That would be embarrassing, to say the least.

Sauntering her way across the Hogwarts Grounds, Camo Cloak draped around her shoulders, luck didn't seem to be on the menu for that day, for standing at the Edge of the Forbidden Forest like two lost souls were Meiyu Xiang and Harlan Montgomery.

"Fuck me," Ula muttered under her breath as she approached the two, chin lifted high despite the embarrassment blooming hot and pink across her cheeks. She shot them both a scalding glare, daring either of them to comment on her late arrival. Just as the cold air was helping the young Takahashi fight the embarrassment out of her system, movement caught her eye. Yellow, feline eyes cut through the dark, making an unpleasant prickle creep up her spine. She forced her expression into an unimpressed one, glaring into its eyes. Fear, for one, was an invitation.

Before long, she managed to mutter, "C'mon." Whether she meant herself or her two companions hardly mattered as she stepped forward, following the animal.

ACTION: following the Wampus

XXXOf course Meiyu was clumsy and tripped in attempt of following the Wampus. Before Harlan could make some kind of snarky comment about her ineptitude of merely walking, untied shoelaces were his absolute downfall and he fell onto the Forest floor with a thud. He wasn't usually so clumsy and it had to have been Meiyu's fault for distracting him. " C'mon, we have to get up. " Quick to move forward, Harlan pushed himself off of the ground and tugged on his camo cloak as he spotted Ula as well and their little trio had been reunited.

" Nice for you to join us. " The words were mostly honest, but otherwise thankful there were a set of witches here who could help out if things went south. He would've made a crude remark back but decided to bite his tongue before a hex was sent flying his way.

All in all, Harlan followed the third year with his wand gripped tightly in his hand and his CAMO CLOAK's hood pulled back over his head and hoping they could all move forward together before someone caught them out and about forcing them back up into the Gryffindor Common Room. With a look towards Meiyu, the teenager pushed back Ula to take the front feeling like he needed to lead them out of all of this mess.

It seemed that Frederick was prepared for the worst to happen, or at least that there would be a need to use sparks to guide his partners back. Unfortunately, Rosaline and Avery seemed paralyzed by the daunting task of following the Wampus, and froze, not moving. But honestly, who could blame them?

With a chip on her shoulder, Ula let her partners know she was there by the scalding glare, the better to warm them with. Deciding they had lost enough time, she took her camo cloak, and threw it on, making sure to follow when the Wampus turned to enter the forest once more. She was able to keep up with it for a few moments but then made the cardinal mistake of looking back, thinking she had heard a sound. She ran into a branch that knocked her off course, and onto the ground. That was enough time for the beast to escape her sight, as well as any chance of catching up with her partners. Instead, she would do her best to make her way back to the edge of the forest, hoping at least one of her partners would have had better luck.

Harlan was just as frustrated, even more so when he got lost. Though at least he found Meiyu, and Ula was waiting for them when they got back. That meant it was more than time to try again. Making sure he was in the lead, he strode forward, following the golden coat of the Wampus ahead of them. He was so focused he didn’t even hear Ula drop from behind him. Thankfully after what seemed like much too long, the Wampus arrived at its nest, where it prowled for a few moments, and then rolled around for a little bit before starting to make its way back to the edge of the forest. Making sure to stay out of the Wampus’ way, Harlan dodged in, carefully working a piece of parchment free from the nest.

Not to be left behind, Meiyu ensured they were carefully tucked under Harlan’s camo cloak before sticking close to Harlan’s side. Just in case Harlan took his eye off the prize, Meiyu kept their gaze focused on their target. Ula’s accident wasn’t caught by Meiyu earlier, even when Harlan and Meiyu arrived at the nest, ready to claim their prize. Just as Harlan darted forward, Meiyu did the same, maybe thinking they needed two pieces, perhaps looking to take the glory for herself. Whichever it was, Meiyu also pulled a piece of parchment free of the nest.

It was a bit more difficult to find their way out, considering they no longer had the Wampus to follow but perhaps that was a good thing, as in their wandering, they managed to find Ula. Finally the trio broke through the edge of the forest, moving away from it to check the parchment both Harlan and Meiyu had retrieved for the next clue.

It must have been the feeling of the darkness around Avery that made her freeze. If anything, it was the adrenaline rushing through her veins. The thief had to be close. Avery was sure of it. Why else would everyone else be out there? Something wasn't adding up. Avery barely heard the words Frederick had spoken. She hadn't even registered that Rosaline had finally arrived until after Frederick had said something. Her focus was divided. Fighting for what side would get the dominance, and there was no clear end in sight. She had to get herself into the game or she would fail miserably. Not only for herself, but for her team that was counting on her. "I agree. If anything, at least we get a heads up as to where the thief may have gone or where it may be." Avery responded. Finally snapping herself back to the real world. Avery pulled her cloak tighter around her and lifted the hood over her head. With a nod in Rosaline and Frederick's direction, she took the leap of faith. There was no going back now. Avery wondered for only a moment what she would find. A shiver crept up her body at the thought of going back into the forest. Past curfew this time. She had never gone in before at that hour, but there was a first time for everything, and now was not the time to be fearful. Now was the time to be the lioness. A lioness that was hunting down her prey.

After all the effort and attempts, Rosaline finally succeeded. This was her first time sneaking out of the dorm after curfew. Her heart was pounding. The nervousness crept up her body after she left the castle and got to the ground. A cold winter night like this wasn’t the best time to wander in the dark. Though she was out of the castle, she still looked everywhere carefully, afraid to be caught by the staff. The freezing wind was blowing. Clutching her robe more tightly, she heard something near the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Rosaline saw some Gryffindor students there. Most of them were in the Common Room and witnessed the trophy being stolen before. They were here for the same thing as her— to find the culprit. Rosaline recognized her two young fellow lions, Fred and Avery. The two of them were chatting with a concerned expression on their face. The guilt sneaked up on her. She should be more careful and act more quickly. It took too much time for her to arrive here and wasted her friends’ time. Yet she composed herself immediately. The girl knew she shouldn’t be stuck in this emotion; the important matter now was to capture the one true culprit. Rosaline wore a warm smile and walked nearer to her friends. “Hey, Fred and Avery! I did it. Sorry for the long wait,” she greeted them with a sheepish smile. They seemed to be happy to see her. It relieved her nerves. Fred started talking about his theory and suggestion. Rosaline listened intently and nodded along with his words. “I totally agree with what you say.” Suddenly, she thought of something and reached her hand to her little bag, which she always carried with her. Pulling out her camo cloak, she said, “This might help us find that creature in the forest.” She nodded again to Fred’s plan. Throwing the camo cloak on herself, she gave Avery and Fred a thumbs-up, meaning she was ready. The young Gryffindor took her first step into the forest, then the second, then the third. Weirdly, it wasn’t that terrifying to her. This was her first time attempting to go into it, but she was thrilled and ready to face the mystery that awaited her.

After finishing what he had to say and bracing himself, Frederick had the distinct feeling that he was talking to statues. Or to the trees of the forest, either way, it felt the same. Avery and Rosaline didn’t move, and for long enough that Fred truly felt it, they didn’t even respond. “Hello? Did you hear me?” he asked, waving his hands in front of himself in an attempt to pull the girls’ attention back to the task at hand.

Thankfully, they reacted moments later, ready to slip into the forest beneath their camo cloaks to follow the creature’s trail. Frederick wasn’t entirely confident in his plan, it would have been better if all three of them could go together, but with only two cloaks available, he stood his ground and tried to calm himself, placing his trust in Avery and Rosaline. “Alright. I’ll keep watch, don’t take too long,” he said, nodding toward Avery and giving Rosaline a thumbs-up.

Left alone at the forest’s edge, the boy suddenly felt very small before the towering, dark barrier formed by the trees. In response, he tightened his grip on his wand in his right hand. He couldn’t allow himself to feel afraid, he thought, not when the task facing his companions was far more frightening. He focused on staying calm, for them and for himself, clinging to the sense of loyalty that, even unconsciously, had always guided his decisions.

Even so, his heart raced as he watched them disappear among the tall trunks and tangled branches. Fred alternated between standing still, staring in the direction they had entered the forest, pacing a few steps to the left and right to cover a wider area, and casting quick glances back toward the castle to make sure no one was approaching who could get them into serious trouble. Once again, he waited, ready to cast Periculum at a moment’s notice if either of them took too long to return.

Mod Post

Avery was not going to let fear of being caught or the Wampus stop her. She was determined to move forward with their plot and finally get past this piece. Perhaps the Wampus was worn out, or perhaps the light from the moon was guiding her path. Whatever it was, her eagle eyes never left the Wampus, and the trees that had been such a problem did not deter her from her goal. She waited for the Wampus to roll around in its nest, moving around it carefully afterward and then once more taking off for the edge of the forest before she made her own move. Carefully she worked a piece of parchment paper out of the nest, and held it tightly, turning and catching sight of Rosaline doing something similar.

Ready to go, Rosaline was not too far behind Avery as she entered the forest. She took a very similar path, making sure both Avery and the Wampus stayed in her sight, so she didn’t get lost. The noises were intimidating but nothing the young Gryffindor couldn’t handle. The Wampus did spend a little time at its nest, but Rosaline insured she was well out of its way and waited for it to leave before she moved in. She didn’t notice that Avery was doing the same, until she held her own piece of parchment in hand.

As if in silent agreement, the two girls turned back to where they came and made their way to the edge of the forest, where Frederick awaited them patiently. He was prepared to guide them out if they got lost, but it seemed like luck was on their side this time, and they would not be farther delayed.
