Timothy carefully pushed open the door, glad to find it unlocked. He had had a busy first few days at Hogwarts, but this was what he had been waiting for since getting his letter. He wasn't going to wait another two years!
He looked slipped through the door into the ancient runes classroom, carefully closing it behind him. His eyes immediately found the rows of books, and he rushed towards them. He quickly found a copy of "Spellman's Syllabary" admittedly much newer than his grandmother's old worn copy. He picked a different book and opened it to a random page. He recognised runes from the elder futhark, and could see the author had demonstrated different ways to combine the runes into charms.
Questions burst into his head like fireworks. He could clearly see the different runes making up the charm, and tried to remember their meanings to work out what this particular charm may have been intended to do.
He flitted back to the shelf and grabbed the copy of `Spellman's Syllabary` flipping it open to about halfway through where the familiar grid of Elder Futhark runes could be found.
"Raidho could be travelling, Kennaz could be Vision.. maybe to stop someone getting lost?" He often found talking to himself helped him structure his thoughts.
He ran his finger down the book to find where the author explained the purpose of the rune.
"oh Raidho is spontaneity and Kennaz is creativity, so to help with providing inspiration in creative endeavours... But how does the rune know what you want it to do?"
he begins flicking back through the book hoping to find some explanation, oblivious to the other occupant of the room.

Upon hearing the voice Timothys head snapped up. His back straightening from the hunched position it had assumed whilst he was engrossed in the two books infront of him.
For a moment he panicked. He knew these books were intended for third years and up who were taking ancient runes. How much trouble was he going to be in for reading them?
The professor approaching him was tall. She walked directly to him, each step echoing through the room with a sharp snap.
Timothy was sure he was about to be scalded, but then she offered another potential meaning of the rune combination. As she smiled at Timothy he relaxed slightly. He didn't seem to be in trouble...
"Sorry.. I er... I didnt mean to disturb you Professor." He glanced back down sheepishly at the pages before him "I like all runes professor. My grandmother had a book of them in her attic i found and... well they are like little puzzles and secret codes. Or knotts that sometimes come unravelled easily but other times the more you pull the tighter they become. It's fascinating."
He turned the book with the rune charm around to face the professor. Pointing a thin finger at the authors note below the image.
"The author says that this is a charm to inspire creativity, but there must be dozens of other meanings it could have."
A small crease appeared between Timothy's eyebrows as he is unable to understand this gap in his understanding.
"If the same shape can be used for a dozen things then how does the magic know what the person who made the rune wants it to do Professor?"
Spells only have one effect for the words you say. How can the same rune do so many things. I don't think it would do all of them at once. That would make them too chaotic
Timothy looked up from his book back at the professor. Maybe she would be able to make sense of it for him.

Timothy listened with fascination as the professor spoke. The concept of intent seemed obvious now that she said it.
"That makes sense! Like how just saying the incantation doesn't work you have to intend to cast a spell! Though runes are more flexible than spells. I imagine that means that the unintended consequences of them could be more extreme..."
At the concept of books his eyes lit up in delight! "Some books would be great. I want to try to translate a book from elder futhark but I couldn't find any in the library, that weren't written in English."
Timothy was stunned, not only was he not in trouble, he was being offered more pieces of the puzzle. He glanced back at the array of books behind him as though wondering where to start.
"Unless there is something more useful I could be looking up? I haven't got a clue what I'll be covering in third year, maybe I should do those things first. but then maybe I should wait to do those subjects with everyone else or the lessons will become too trivial."
At some point during this question Timothy began murmuring more to himself than the professor as he tried to work out what he wanted to learn. He seemed to realise this and then spun around to face the professor again.
"Sorry Professor. erm... my name is Timothy. I'm a first year so I don't know what would be appropriate for me to study. I also don't know enough to know what I don't know so any guidance you can give me before I start my third year would be greatly appeciated."

Timothy nodded as the professor confirmed his hypothesis of rune charms working like spells, but then his eyes widened at the sight of the proffered book. He tried his best to remain calm and barely prevented himself snatching it from her hands and sitting and reading it now. He took the book reverently in both hands, gazing down at the cover, peaking at the first page quickly to see if it contained a foreword or a contents page. This was another book on Elder Futhark, he had worried he wouldn't be able to continue studying for two more years, but this was something he could learn!
Maybe I should start writing notes in runes to properly immerse myself and become more fluent.
His eyes snapped up to the professor as though remembering that they were there.
"Th..Thankyou so much" He stammered out.
This was more than he had dared to dream would be possible as a first year but now her mind was racing with the possibilities of learning runes along side his other subjects.
"If I finish this will there be another I can do? I know I can't attend classes but is there maybe an ancient runes club? or any way I can just sit at the back?"
He clutched the tome to his chest hugging it slightly as he implored the teacher. Surely there must be a way.
