Dear Pam,
I bet you’re grinning your ears off. I told you I’d write! I hope you’re having a good December holiday so far, although I’m bummed that you aren’t here with me. The days feel a little longer without you around, especially without getting to listen to Weird Sisters, seeing as though you took the radio home. I’d say, even if you did, it’d have felt lonely. Nobody to sing and mime guitar riffs whenever the opportunity arises, nobody to chat to, nobody to walk up those flights of stairs to the Owlery and tend our owls to. Surely it’s obvious now, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt – my life has turned a sheen of white and grey without you and your cascade of blonde or purple.
And it is quite literally true. Snow has dusted the grounds of December, replacing the auburn I so cherished during autumn. Nevertheless, I still find myself waking up and taking walks across the snow, leaving tracks that disappear under mounds of white within minutes.
Sol is definitely enjoying his time, however. On days that he agrees to accompany me around the castle, it’s almost as though he never did. His pearly white feathers instantly camouflaged with the surroundings whenever he dived into an increasing pile, and I realised that it was only when I paid no mind that he resurfaced, often with something clamped between his beak. Here I thought that my owl treats were wonderful, but no, he has taken a far more carnivorous approach! My only hope is that he doesn’t deposit any of those mice he picks up onto my bed, though I’m guessing it is a sign of his affection. Oh, what a dilemma!
Enough on that. I am writing to let you know that I am alive and well. Not that you'd assume otherwise. But I remember the look you gave me before you left – that slightest passing of worry. I never did get a chance to tell you why I stayed behind. Looking back, I wonder if I should have. I hesitate to tell you this in a letter. It's just...I'm not sure if I can put it into words. I will, however, reassure you as often as possible, perhaps if you write a letter back to me. If that does happen, I look forward to seeing Lumi. She definitely likes me a whole lot better than Sol, and you know how much nicer he becomes when she's present.
And if you don't...I'll still write to you. The journal only works so well. There is a lot I would love to say, but with so many questions unanswered, I can only say so much until I somehow manage to acquire the answers. The biggest trouble is, I don't know how I'll be able to do so. At least, not without you, or Aurelia, or Jan...
Sorry. I may have rambled on and revealed nothing, as I was saying! Enjoy your holidays, but don't immerse yourself in them so much that you forget about me completely. Tell your dad I said hi, and thank him for the treats he made that I got to eat when we first went back to school – I hadn't gotten the opportunity to say that. Hope he accepts it, no matter how overdue it may be.
Your friend,
Ruth Fairchild

Dear Ruth,
I'm so so glad to hear from you. I'm having a pretty good time at home, although I'm always missing the you and Amelia terribly. I've told my dad a whole lot about you, he says I should've brought you home with me. I feel kinda guilty that thought didn't occur to me, but maybe next time? The next time you decide to stay back at school you must let me know so I can drag you home with me.
I think you'll like it here. Although it's not very big, it's very warm. I think you'll like my dad too. Actually I know so. I'm not bragging, but literally everyone likes my dad, even Luminous, and that's saying something.
Dad was glad that you liked the sweets. We plan to make a new set during the holidays too, so I'll bring some more gooey deserts back for you once the hols end.
I think about you a lot. Although it's very cold here, there's not a lot of snow, and I, quite honestly, miss school grounds. Even then, you're not too lonely, are you? You should take this opportunity to make new friends heh < 3. I should also be taking my own advice but oh well.
Are you doing alright though? I remember seeing you look rather sad when I was leaving, although I couldn't tell if it was because I was going home or if you weren't. Maybe you could like... take an emergency leave or something and come down here? It won't take that long...
Sol seems to adore my dad too, again, more than me. He ate up all the owl treats that dad gave him without a word. He was so behaved lol. Unfortunately for him, those owl treats were Lumi's. She currently can't stand him. It was entertaining to be honest, kinda like those single-sided love stories, but between owls?
I'm always there with you, even if it is through letters. I'm not sure how much I can help you out from here in the muggle world, but I'll really do my best. With that said, I hope you don't spend all your time trying to figure out your answers. After all, Christmas is a happy occasion is it not? You should enjoy yourself as much as you can. If you feel lonely, you should try the Astronomy Tower. For me, stars are excellent companions. Maybe you'll think so too?
Last, but definitely not the least, Merry Christmas Ruth! I hope you have a great day full of.... uh.. sweets and cakes and presents— I hope you like the stuff I've sent you along with the owl too!
I'll be back soon — sooner than it probably feels right now. Until then, let my letters keep you company on the lonely days, and remember that I'm still with you in the tiny ways that matter. You’re not alone, not ever. I’ll write again before the stars come out tonight.
Yours truly,
Pam

Dear Pam,
Thank you so much for your Christmas wish. This is a little belated, but Merry Christmas, and (at the time of writing), Happy Boxing Day! I’ll give you yours when you come back, mainly because I want to see your reaction as you open it. It may be a little odd of a reason, but I have put too much effort into it to lose the opportunity to see your face– it’s bound to be priceless!
Speaking of which, thank you for the scrapbook. It may not seem like it, but I’m beyond thrilled to start working on it. Plus, the journal I had been using up to now has been…well, uh, let’s just say, slightly mangled. I have also run out of pages to write, so the fresh ones that beckon me are hard to resist.
My Christmas was alright. I got to eat at the annual Christmas banquet with a friend of mine, and I took a quick visit to the Astronomy Tower (ha ha, way ahead of you) because I didn’t feel like returning to the common room just yet. While the stars were a delight, as always, I was slightly disappointed by the lack of show from the Ursid Meteor Shower that was supposed to have happened. The lack of company also soon caught up to me, and I was lonely all over again.
But today has been better than the previous day. I had gone to Hogsmeade’s local library for some extensive research as the school’s wasn’t providing any essential information at all. As I was in the Main Square, I found out there was actually a Winter Festival occurring! It was really chaotic, and threw me off my course…However, I joined an activity that involved us searching for golden socks in various stores, based on riddles provided. The clues were fairly easy, and I managed to uncover one of them! I’m kind of excited to go again today to check the next riddle out.
In my exhilaration, I may have lost track and not gone to the library entirely. But surely I’ll get the opportunity to do so tomorrow? Who knows. I’ll be sure to write back about my progress.
Thanks for your encouragement, by the way. It was really nice to receive your letter. I can almost hear your voice–how funny is that? Also, I don’t believe an ‘emergency leave’ is possible. Then again, it might. I’ll have to check with the Mystic Pullman times.
Love,
Ruth
P.S. I heard about the treats. Since Sol hasn’t come back yet (not sure if he’s holed up at yours or just somewhere else entirely), I’ve given Lumi his treats as compensation. She seems happier now, I think.

Dear Ruth,
I'm truly glad you like the journal. The stationary shop had so many options, it was a pain to select one out of all the colors and varieties. But then I remembered that you liked orange, so I figured I should go with the safe option. And I did think it was pretty too, so a win-win from both sides.
With that said, I'm feeling terribly curious about what you've got for me... I can't wait to get back to school, patience isn't really one of my strong points.
My Christmas was fun, as everything is with my dad. I've sent you some pictures of our tree, I figured you might find it nice, although they are not magical. Still haven't figured out the perks of magical photography.
Tell me about your presents for Christmas... I kept thinking about you over the last few days, and seriously I wish you had come with me. It would've been much more fun, and I wouldn't have felt so..... you-sick. Can Ruthsickness be a thing? Friendsickness, bestiesickness? Dunno.
My dad got me a whole new set of skates for Christmas this year! Can you believe it? Although my last one was like twenty years old— okay that's an exaggeration, but you get the idea, it would've still worked fine, even though it's worn out and lost color and— okay I'm getting sidetracked. I don't suppose I've ever told you though? I don't think it came up, but in case it isn't obvious by now, I really like ice skating. Have you ever skated?
A meteor shower? That's so cool! I've never actually experienced a meteor shower before but I bet they're pretty. Most stuff related to the sky seem to be pretty. Maybe it was later though..? Can meteor showers be delayed? I don't know. Maybe they had something else to do and therefore postponed it? Okay, that sounds silly. Nevermind. Although, I'm saddened to hear that you become lonely there too. I hope you're doing better now.
I'm glad you got to participate in something fun. Well it sounds fun. Were the socks really made of gold? That sounds... nice? I think? I don't think you can wear golden socks though. What are you meant to do with them? Sell them? If they're actual gold they would give a decent amount of money....
I'll leave you to it. Since Christmas is over, the time to return to Hogwarts will be rolling in before you and I know it! And then I'll be back to bother and annoy you. Although it won't be too much. Nothing more than you've already dealt with because of me, I'm sure.
Lovingly,
Pam
P.S. So that's why Lumi was in a good mood when she returned. She went off to sleep as soon as she got here, didn't even snap at Sol and stuff. It finally makes sense. As for Sol, he has been rooming here for a while, I think he's either picked Lumi as a potential partner or a potential bullying candidate, can't be sure.
