It was the moment to do something great. To knock Cassian out with a raging spell. To turn the tables of the duel. This was when the second year should have done something so head-turning that they were no longer looking at a gloomy loss. But, alas, once again luck had not been on Hufflepuff’s side. Or at least Amelia wanted to blame it on the faults of luck.

A growing comfort had swirled into the small girl, and her previous terror had lost its reign. The first year, it seemed, had another lesson she needed to learn. With a slightly eccentric swish of her wand, Amelia attempted a spell she had never successful casted yet seen a handful of times. The Knockback jinx. It was rather out of character for the girl to do such a thing as risky as this, yet from the frown that was clenched on the girls face it seemed she was getting a little desperate. To a breeze of disappointment, no success came.

It took a moment for the horror of her mistake to coarse through her. With a deep breath, Amelia focused on pushing her mistake away and focusing on the whatever she intended on doing next. It took her a moment to realize, with a wide eyed frown, that none of the Gryffindors had cast a spell. Slightly suspicious of whatever their plan was, Amelia decided to put her utmost focus into the duel.

A call from the moderator tapped her out of her thoughts. Half way? Half way through her first duel? It couldn’t be possible. It seemed far to fast, too uneventful. She had only cast one spell successfully, had she not? A smile spread across the girl’s face. Dueling was hard. But somehow, so far at least, it had been rather fun.

Day 2 - Afternoon slot

The standout this round, unquestionably, was Amelia. Perhaps disappointed in herself for failing to cast the Knockback Jinx last round, she switched her efforts to a spell she knew better. And it was clear she knew her way around fire considerably better, Incendio Duo coming out such a bright green that Aislin had to shut her eyes for a second. The fire caught with a wicked certainty on Cassian's shoulder, leaving him looking pale and shaky. It was impressive he was still on his feet, really. Amelia's spell was flanked by a Flipendo from the third Hufflepuff, but he at least managed to dodge that; Aislin was very certain she would have had to call a pause for medics if he hadn't.

Verity, meanwhile, abandoned self-preservation to go right for Eonaria. Her cast was nowhere near as flashy as Amelia's, but it was right-on, finding the dead center of Eonaria's stomach and plaguing her with magical tickling.

Again, none of the Gryffindors moved to cast. While dodging wasn't a bad strategy, especially when they had the lead, however narrow, Aislin was starting to worry that they'd misstepped into some kind of confusion. Quiet enough that the crowd shouldn't really be able to hear her, she asked, "Are you all okay?" Well, okay as they could be, considering the state Cassian was in. It was a bad moment to freeze.

Cassian hissed in pain. He'd accidentally zoned out for a bit — terrible idea while Dueling — and it had cost him dearly. It seemed as if the fire he had relied on for so long was turning on him, which he resented deeply. Ugh, he hoped his father wouldn't hear of this, or he was sure to receive a Howler within the week.

XXXPerhaps the stress was getting to her. Eonaria’s palms were beginning to sweat as she tried to figure out what to do next. Unfortunately, during that time, one of their opponents managed to hit her with a Tickling Charm. Eonaria hated this spell with a burning passion. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but getting tickled was an awful sensation to her. She grimaced. It seemed her teammates were also rather caught up. But they could still make a comeback.

Amelia’s heart danced in her chest, as she raised her wand, and with a well practiced hand aimed an Incendio Duo at Cassian. A flash of green was the assurance that her spell had succeeded. Relief spread through the girl, before concern for her victim hit her too. Her sheer excitement, was only added to when she looked around an realized that they weren’t loosing. Well, they weren’t loosing miserably. They had been doing far better as the duel continued and Amelia only dared to dream of how wonderful it would be to win. The thought bought a shy smile of excitement to her face, and she stood straighter, determined to do her best in the few rounds to come.

Ah, shoot, I thought as my spell missed. It was a bit embarrassing to see it miss considering the Gryffindor guy wasn't even moving or actively dodging, but whatever. Better a missed spell than a backfired one, like what happened earlier. At least the other two hit their spells. It was kind of weird to see the entirety of Gryffindor just... stand there.

Okay, well, if she was going to be knocked unconscious in the next three seconds, might as well go out with a bang. So, Vera raised her wand again.

The spell had to hit, even just a little bit. No more fog or bright lights. Just pure damage. But instead of aiming at the guy (who might start becoming her sworn enemy by the time this match was over), she turned to the other girls and cast a spell she just learned last week. "Rictusempra!"

Now, she knew it was the Tickling Charm, but she didn't quite anticipate the effects of it as her opponent held back their laughs. She learned the spell through her books and just threw it at one of the training dummies last week. But, see, training dummies can't really laugh. She could cast it, though! That was arguably the more important part of this duel.

I do not know why I am hesitating, and it seems neither do my teammates. I am zoning out, perhaps, when the voice of the moderator breaks through, asking if I am okay. I shake my head, trying to gather my bearings. Perhaps dueling isn't for me. It is, after all, far too much commotion and somehow something is always on fire. But, that is not a decision to be made right now. Right now, I plant my feet, looking up at our opponents, steeling myself to try again.

Day 2 - Afternoon slot

It was a little jarring when all six duellists shifted back to high intensity, Aislin pulling back from the surge of fire and Knockback Jinxes. The duelling stage, in that moment, was a reminder of how much damage even younger years could do with magic and how fast they could do it. False reassurances came in the form of Cassian extinguishing the nasty flames caught on him, briefly making it look like he might last longer. But only briefly.

Hufflepuff was out for blood. They all were out for blood, but it sort of looked deadliest coming from the badgers, Amelia sending an unforgiving second wave of fire at Cassian just as he'd put out the first and the both of her teammates focusing on Eonaria. They all hit, too, even if Eonaria avoided the worst of Verity's spell. And Gryffindor wasn't just taking it, returning a solid Flipendo, but the successive hits were quickly overshadowed by disaster. Aislin was already halfway to opening her mouth, pretty sure Cassian was going down, when Eonaria's fire spell exploded backwards, in what was terrible luck from Eonaria's perspective and some sort of guardian angel intervening for Verity. After that, there were two Gryffindors on the ground.

"Stop!" Aislin called, voice coming out squeakier than a moderator's probably should. That was... fast. And they were both on fire. She fumbled for her wand, managing to cast two Extinguishing Charms as the healers came over to move Cassian and Eonaria off the stage to recovery. With them cleared out, Aislin thought the third Gryffindor looked very lonely on their side of the stage, the Hufflepuffs intimidating, if weary. She wondered if it had looked similar for Maisie yesterday, after Aislin went down. Gryffindor had more time left than Maisie had, though, so there was still a chance.

These constant successes were starting to scare me, as much as I internally cheered every time I successfully cast a spell and landed a hit. There was that saying "all good things come to an end", and if that meant anything to me now, it was that my spells could fail and backfire again any moment and we would be screwed.

Though, there's another saying that goes, "there's always a light at the end of the tunnel" or something. Considering Gryffindor was left with only one player once the dust had cleared, I'd say that statement was true, too.

Things were looking up, but they could easily fall apart again. Time to knock on wood three times.
