The Cannon and The Keeper
The question from the older Hufflepuff caught her off guard. She had never really been asked that question before, but to her, the answer seemed easy none the less. She carefully set her broom and tools aside, she had been finished for quite a while. Looking up at the boy in front of her to give him her undivided attention. “No offense taken at all.” She gave him a soft smile before continuing. “I wasn’t allowed to socialize much with kids my own age. Most of my socialization comes from my grandparent's parties with all of their rich friends.” Although she didn’t come right out and say she was pureblood, it was made pretty obvious.
She bit her bottom lip and looked away from him for just a moment. A moment that would show that she held some insecurity about what she was about to say. “We live in a muggle town deep in the forest, but there is a lake that all the kids play at walking distance from my house even though we own the land. Well… I was never allowed to venture off too far when the kids were there. I learned to experience the things I wanted to through a lens. When you look at Winter, you see a beautiful blanket of white snow, your breath in the air from the cold, and trees devoid of leaves, right?”
She reached into the bag next to her and pulled out a small photo album that was only big enough to hold 2 photos per page. “When I look at winter, I see this.” She held the album out to him so that he could look and experience it himself. “I look at everything and everyone like an art piece. Like you and your smile would photograph really well with autumn colors behind you. It would bring out the green in your eyes, the olive tones in your skin (going off of the pictures of him), and the rich browns in your hair. These are just the things I notice.” She shrugged and watched him looking for his reaction. It was clear that when she spoke about the colors that he was comprised of, it was not in the way of attraction. She looked at people like they were potential art pieces.

The Cannon and The Keeper
Reid's expression erred on caution and curiosity, worried he asked too much from an interaction so little. But some part of him was happy she entertained his questions, if not at all. By now, it was pretty obvious of what kind of upbringing they endured. Students seemed to have different personalities because of it, but all seemed to have an intellectual prowess he couldn't match.
Maybe that was why his grandfather was so hard on him, he lacked what he wanted in a grandson. He knew what type of person his grandfather wanted him to be. He wanted him to be strong mentally, smart, cunning, and always putting his family first. An excellent wizard and a future ahead of him. But Reid was naive, too friendly, not as smart, and certainly had no care of the Fosgate name.
His name wasn't Reid Fosgate, it was Kovacs, the English equivalent to 'Smith'. He didn't have the upbringing that San had and that sort of made him happy, albeit she seemed like she turned out fine. The photos she showed him was sort of proof for that. He remembered his first year where he met some pureblood who drew gore photos, that was a sight itself. Reid's expression lit up at the sight of the photos, leaning forward to look through her work curiously.
"Whoa." he awed. He flipped through it, eventually looking up as she described him. Reid was surprised at her vivid she was at it, photography certainly was her niche. "That's pretty poetic." He flashed a warm smile and tried to think of what to say. "That kind of reminds me of something." Reid looked up as his gaze drifted to the sky.
"Blue and purple hydrangeas in the spring, they looked nice against some Autumn colors. Mum grew them often, they don't smell like anything, her favorites were the blue and their color looked like this." His finger gently grazed over the blue-toned snow. "Maybe a little lighter, kind of like the sky right now."
"Trouble usually finds me."

She offered him another smile in return to his right before he looked up at the sky. He spoke about his mother and her favorite hydrangeas. She looked to where he pointed on her photograph as he referenced it for the likeness of the colors. Her eyes also drifted up the sky when that became a reference as well. She wasn’t sure she had ever seen that particular flower before. Her mother always grew practical things, but she might have seen something like that in the town when they went shopping for their groceries.
“That sounds like a charming flower. Probably something that would photograph well. I think it just stems from seeing the world from the perspective of the outside looking in. When you don’t get to have friends, you learn how to see the world a little differently. It’s not necessarily the bad thing just different.” Truth be told, she loved how she was able to look at the world and see the finer details that a lot of people either take for granted or seem to miss altogether.
Would it have been nice to have friends for the majority of her young childhood, yes? She was making up for that now, however, by making friends now. “The way I see it is even if I had made friends with the muggle kids in town, I wouldn’t have a lot of opportunities to keep them as friends. It was probably for the better of it all in the end anyway. It’s easier to create bonds here where I am not required to hide who I am or lie about where I go and what I do.” She didn’t enjoy lying as much as she would if she felt it was necessary. She just preferred not to if she could avoid it.

It made Reid think of all his muggle friends a little, causing a pang of sadness that hit him rather suddenly. He picked up a clipper and played with it between his hands as she explained what she was conveying to him. A sharp inhale came from him, but his smile lingered, albeit it was a little more melancholy. "Well -" He softly exhaled with a nuanced laugh to punctuate the air, he tried to avoid creating an awkwardness between the two of them.
This was a bit of a hard topic for him, despite what one might think. "You're right, yeah." Reid leaned back on an arm, lazily draping the other one across his stomach. "I have, well had, friends back in Derby. After my second year, it was becoming harder and harder for me to explain where I'm going. Stuff that was relevant in their school, like movies and games, I just couldn't relate to. So it was sort of hard going back 'cos it felt all so different to me."
He rolled his neck around and swiped his thumb across the cold metal handle of the clippers. "Plus I moved to Birmingham too, that was a huge change. I try to catch up, I ask my uncle if he can send me comics too. When I get back, I try to catch some movies and stuff." Reid had a bit of a culture shock abandoning the things he took for granted, movies, games, TV shows, and pretty much things that contributed to his odd interests.
But the three years sort of disciplined him, no distractions, nothing to make him stay late at night, but that was largely it. "It's easier to make friends here though, I more or less spend time with the same people here. We just get new faces every year. Keeping friends though? I think I'm a little bad at that." He let out a weak chortle at that last part, it was more than true for him. His retention of friendships was in the gutter and he didn't know why.
