Coming here alone was hard at least when she had her teammates she could be distracted by her own thoughts. However, she had come here every morning before breakfast for extra training with Kyle… Now it seemed foreboding like the haunted house at the end of the street that everyone whispered about, the forbidden secret. Both here and the great lake were hard for her to go to because of the memories that seemed to wrap themselves around her ribcage and squeeze. She felt betrayed by him and now with no closure… She sighed and shook her head.

Chewing her bottom lip as she walked with her new broom in hand, and the kit she had to take care of it. She planned on giving it some maintenance and then maybe some laps around the pitch to test it out. He had been the only reason she had gotten into quidditch in the first place, maybe next year dueling would be the way to go. Stop it! You need to stop moping like this. You are better than this, just shut your brain off… She audibly scoffed at herself with a disbelieving laugh. Shut her brain off? Yeah, ok! Why not just stop breathing too because that would practically be the same thing!

It was a very rare moment when she was far too wrapped up in her own head to even notice that there was someone else in the area. Let alone the fact that she was basically walking right up to him as she was clearly not the only person to think about maintaining their broom today. Wait… He was on the Hufflepuff quidditch team. She vaguely remembered Erin calling him out when he kicked up onto the field in their game, but she couldn’t for the life of her remember his name. She subconsciously pulled her hair over her shoulder as she approached him. “Hey, do you mind if I join you?” Her silvery voice was quiet but loud enough for him to hear her just fine. She motioned to her Nimbus 1500 that she carried indicating that she planned on giving it some TLC.

The sun combed through his hair, rustling it like an unkempt nest atop of an unfortunate soul. Reid tucked a particularly lengthy piece of hair behind his ear as he continued working on his broom. It's been a while since he got a hair cut and it was growing out longer than he could manage. But he'd soon get it cut when he got back to Birmingham this coming break. He could hear distant noises, unable to make them out properly since he was so focused on what he was doing.

Every now and then, he'd look up, but ultimately turn his attention back to his Nimbus 1000. A small book was open beside him, held down by his beater bat so that the wind wouldn't take it away. On the page said in bold 'PROPER BROOM MAINTENANCE FOR BEGINNERS'. There was one thing Reid now took very seriously and that was Quidditch, along with the game was the broom. If he treated the broom well, it would treat him well, simple as that.

A noise came from the back of his throat as his forest green eyes scanned the steps outlined on the page. He was trimming the tail, gently snipping off any ends that stuck out from the ends of it all. The pieces fell to the floor, piling at his feet as he went about his work. Reid reached forward to turn the page till a voice caught his attention -“Hey, do you mind if I join you?” It caused him to look up. Upon instinct, he greeted her with a faint smile and somewhat recognized her as one of Slytherin's players.

He only saw her benched while he was benched as well, so her role in the team to him was unknown. For a second, his smile faltered. That meant she was one of Erin's teammates. He fought the lines that threatened to form, surely forming into a light scowl if he didn't control it. Instead, he greeted her as he did with any other. "Not at all, the more the merrier." he quickly chirped. Reid rolled up the sleeves of his Quidditch knit, a dirt-stained yellow sweater with a black stripe running horizontal through it.

He moved the book a little, turning the page in the process, but also signifying that she was welcome to sit as close as she might want to. Her broom made him curious. The shaft looked something like his own and so did the tail, he couldn't make the words out on the broomhead either. But it looked like a distant relative of his Nimbus 1000. "That's a nice model, kind of looks like mine, which one is that?"

It was a genuine question, but also a means of avoiding awkward silences with someone he barely just met. First year him would probably try the silence, but third year him thankfully got some semblance of people skills since he was a Prefect after all. He was more open to meeting new people anyway. His only worry was she may simply wanted to join him and work in the silence, the very silence he disturbed. While all of this was happening, he continued trimming.

She met his forest eyes with her own sapphire ones and offered him a warm smile when he said she could join. It was true that she was one of Erin’s teammates but thankfully she did not share the indigo haired girl’s opinions or thought processes. She remembered watching Ried on the field and he was strong. She certainly was glad she never had the opportunity to take a bludger from him. Noting that he moved the book so that she could sit within good company, so she closed the short distance left and gently laid her broom down before sitting with it.

She sat opposite of him so that if any conversation happened between them, she could at least look at him. Sitting side by side was something close friends did, and she couldn’t even remember his name. The rips in her black jeans exposed one of her knees and a couple of places on her shins, pants she should probably retire for the season, but what could you do when they were your favorite?

Her own sweater was long, but not baggy, ending right above her mid-thigh. The bottom hem, sleeve cuffs, and collar were a classic emerald green leaving the rest of the sweater black. She pushed up her sleeves revealing that it wasn’t just the random spots on her legs that shared her porcelain fine complexion. As she opened her satchel containing the little things, she would need for her broom his voice caused her to look up at him once more. “Oh, it’s a Nimbus 1500. I got it as a gift for making the team from my father. So I wanted to make sure to take really good care of it. I rode it a couple of days ago to get the feel for it and now I finally have time to shape it better.” If there was one thing San did it was taking pride in her possessions by taking good care of them, regardless of what the holes in her jeans said.

She extended her hand to him in greeting, something she should have done before even sitting down. “I’m Santario, by the way, and congratulations on your win. It was well earned.” If he took her hand to shake he would realize the girl had somewhat cold hands and a firm, but not too tight of a grip something considered respectable. If he did not take her hand, she would do the same thing she would do when he released her hand if he had taken it. She would grab the trimmers from her satchel and carefully set to work in shaping the very obviously new broom.

The silence crept in as she sat across from him, so he was happy she decided to entertain his idea of a conversation. A bit of air thinly escaped his lips as it tilted into a polite smile. The origins of the broom was a nice surprise as odd as it seemed. Reid seemed to hear a lot of dreary stories from the students of Hogwarts, maybe he was just conditioned to expect the worst before the best. "That so? ..." he spoke softly, nodding as she told her story. His smile grew from it as he continued trimming his own broom.

His actions ceased as she congratulated him, looking just in time to see her extend a hand. He clumsily set the trimmer down and wiped his hand, meeting her own with his a split second later. It was a firm grip, not the type to break a hand, just one that gave some sort of confidence. His 'training' over the summer began, how to act, how to talk, how to be around his peers with his grandfather's unforgiving hand. Body language, Reid oozed it, he wasn't a very talkative person and that might become apparent to her if she ever met him on more than one occasion.

He wasn't shy, he had a lot to say, but a lot of voices telling him not to. 'Talk and act with meaning, if you have nothing useful to say, don't say it at all'. His grandfather tried to thrust the concept of 'purpose' unto him, he couldn't just be anyone else, despite being just that to everyone else. So to everyone else, he tried to act a certain way, Santario was no different.

If he knew her better, it would be a different story, a different him, but that remained to be seen. His handshake lasted for a short second, coupled with his polite smile. "It was a brilliant game. You guys did really well, that goalkeeper of yours is a beast ... and so is your beater." He tried to say the last bit with as little malice as he could, but he wasn't so fond of her and it showed.

He quickly followed up with something else, worried of leaving off on a bad note. "Do you play Chaser? I didn't see you get to play out there." Reid's hand rested on his lap as he tried to show her that his attention was invested.

She returned his smile and when their hands released, she would pick up her trimmers. Children who were groomed would no doubt have an easier time noticing the little traits each other carried. She herself sat perfectly straight as if she had been used to having her shoulders tied back to a chair until she could do it on her own. Her hands although slim and elegant moved with purpose and never wasted a movement just as a proper lady should.

She nodded when he mentioned Koko but when he brought up Erin her smile faded, and she would not try to hide it. “Yeah, Koko is a really amazing keeper. Though, Erin… Well, she is, of course, a good beater although I do not approve of her attitude nor the way she treats people.” Teammate or not she would not stick up for someone she did not approve of it and actions that she could not condone.

Although she had picked up her own trimmers it would appear the girl did for the moment waste the movement as she focused on the boy in front of her. A breeze flowed through the pitch blowing some of her raven hair in her face. Something that was quickly remedied by collecting all of her hair over to one shoulder. Separating it into sections and wrapping them around each other as he asked her what position she played. “Ah, no, not a chaser. I am actually the second-string keeper. Though we were just informed that if we want to be apart of the dueling club when it starts, we also can’t be in quidditch. So I am second-guessing remaining with the team.” She wouldn’t quit without having a replacement on deck, but given her teammates as well it was the more appealing option.

“You are an amazing beater, Reid, you sent those bludgers off like cannonballs. The compliment was genuine and she would very much hate to have to take a bludger directed from him. Granted, if she did decide to take on dueling instead of quidditch that wouldn’t be an issue. Her sapphire eyes flitted over him as if she were analyzing him; the way he sat, spoke, how he carried himself within their so far short conversation, and more importantly any emotion he expressed. It was one of the things that she was good at and it helped her figure out how to converse with people who she considered far more normal than she was.

The more they talked, the less house began to matter to him. Perhaps he had gotten so used to the prejudice in his three years at Hogwarts that he began to take it on himself. The student wasn't without fault, he was on his guard around Santario at first. His expectations told him that he'd be on the defense, but that wasn't the case. The Slytherin didn't make snide comments at him, didn't seem to nip at his heels or insult his intelligence, it was just a simple conversation.

Reid didn't really appreciate that until now, so worried about who he should be to people that he forgot how he should be himself. Her words earned her a warm smile from the Hufflepuff, something a lot more genuine than his other expressions as he clipped the wood. But the compliment caused him to divert his expression for a bit, wearing a short-lived grin on his suddenly bashful features.

"Ah ha, yeah. Well, I try! It's fun, er ..." He took a deep breath and reworded it in his head. "It's fun to hit the bludgers, it's not always fun to see people get hurt by them. But hitting them is what I've done best, so I'm happy to have found a place in my team. It's nice that it's also led by some great captains." He had cut himself off short, afraid of seeming too haughty.

His performance at the latter half of the Quidditch game already spoke enough for his confidence, so he toned it down. The match was good, it was prolonged, each team did its best. "So, dueling? Is that something you wanted to compete in?" he asked curiously. His friends, he would say, were adept witches and wizards. Naturally, he saw most of them take interest in the club like Santario seems to have conveyed.

That smile of his shone a little more than it did the first time, and it seemed that she had been successful in breaking the ice. She nodded as he spoke, agreeing with his sentiments. “Hm, yes, watching people get hurt is not something that I enjoy at all, but at the same time, it is apart of the game. We all knew what we were signing up for when we did.” That wasn’t exactly true because although she was a pureblood, she had no idea how violent quidditch could be. Having watched Quinn and Kyle plummet to the ground had scared the hell out of her. She wasn’t afraid for herself, but for her friends and what was worse is that Hogwarts’s bludgers weren’t even as powerful as the pros.

Dueling was also violent, but it somehow seemed a little less. “Yeah, I think so. I’m competitive, but at the same time not? It’s more like I am competitive with myself more than I am with others. I don’t believe in stepping on others to lift yourself up, but I do believe that I should always try to be better than I was yesterday.” He was easy to talk to, and it was notable as she spoke freely with him. It would appear that the more he relaxed, the more she could as well. Outwardly it was easy to show confidence, but in the back of her mind, he was still a third-year, a Prefect, and a fantastic beater, and that was still a little intimidating.

“I look at dueling as a way to practice my skills and hone myself to be better. How else can you be better at predicting when you will need something if you never use it in that situation? Although I don’t expect to run into dark wizards and I don’t plan on being an Auror, it is always good to be capable of protecting those you care most about.” It was her greatest fear, failing to protect those that she held dear, being useless, and afraid. "Really, I want to be a potions master and healer, but there isn't exactly a good way to practice either of those outside of classes." She laughed softly, looking down at the way her broom tail was shaping up to be. She figured that she had pruned enough to make the changes that she had wanted on how it handled. After all, even if she wasn't going to play quidditch, having a well-maintained broom would still be a good thing to have around.

Reid had been maintaining his broom longer than the conversation had began, so he ended up just setting it aside and shoving his tools in a bag as she explained. All the while, he maintained the eye contact out of courtesy and only broke it when he was failing at putting some of the tools away. A series of nods and subtle actions indicated some sort of reaction from the wizard when Santario mentioned things that resonated with him.

A few noises from the back of his throat came off as a hum between his closed lips, it was barely audible but he didn't want to cut into her explanation by making little quips. It gave him time to gather his thoughts, maybe even say something worth listening to. But the Prefect was more interested in her opinion since he didn't exactly personally know many people who had dueling in mind.

"Yeah, there really isn't a way to go about that without getting in trouble sometimes." He was a prefect, so he should probably say things that aren't rulebreaking. On the other hand, he wasn't exactly all that cut square himself. "I mean, you could just try the abandoned bathrooms somehow? Or you can even maybe ask the nurse to just teach or explain a few things to you."

They were suggestions, just ideas in his mind he was playing off to try and help just a little. "I don't know if I'll ever get as good as my other friends in spellcasting, I'm good, but I'm not that good. But I do agree, I want to be able to protect people. Dunno, maybe I'll get magic resistant armor and just run into people."

A joking grin briefly flashed on his features at the last sentence, it was just his childish interests shining through. Thor being his favorite comic book character had given him that placebo confidence, especially in that game. He already dubbed his bat 'Mjolnir', the spelling part was something he had to double check with a few Ravenclaws. "I don't know what I want to be yet, I've only read so much into jobs."

She nodded when he spoke about going to the nurse or the abandoned bathrooms. “Honestly, I will probably also get in Professor Price’s good graces and see if he would be willing to let me pick his brain sometimes. Then I might also be able to volunteer in the hospital wing when I get older.” Given that the man used to work at St. Mungos and now was the potions professor here at Hogwarts, he had quickly become someone that Santario would look up to. He and Caradoc Browne as she had heard rumors that his healing capabilities were also quite good.

She laughed softly when he said that he would just run into people with magic resistant armor. “As much as I hope you never have to be in that situation, it is an interesting thing to picture. Just you done up in knights armor bull-rushing with magic resistance.” It very much was an amusing image in her head. “You have a nice smile, and I think you should do that more often. You also have plenty of time to figure out what you want to be in life. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders, and I can’t see you struggling for long.” Her smile comment was genuine and would seem nonchalant. She wasn’t the type of girl to notice looks in anything other than an art form. As far as she was concerned, boys like him hardly stumbled for long. She was sure he was probably destined for something or other, and it would just take him a little more time to see it.

“I guess it was an easy decision for me. I spent a lot of time isolated, and I took to helping my mom with potions, and I became fascinated by them. I also do photography as a hobby, so if for whatever reason I fail, I suppose I can always work for the paper as a photographer. My father says I am always only looking at places and people through the lens of my camera.” She shrugged a little. What else could you do when you weren’t allowed to interact with the people around you?

A warm tinge on his cheeks appeared at the compliment of his smile, it was frankly the first time he's heard such a thing. The Hufflepuff laughed, seeming abashed by it. His hand held the other, thumbing over his knuckles as he leaned on his knees to deliver said attention. She was a lot less reserved than more people he had met, which surprised him through and through.

Most answers he got seemed vague sometimes or rather cut short, like they were incomplete thoughts chopped by a heavy conscience. The young student was even surprised by her mention of a 'photographer'. He for one never really knew what it really was, he knew they were people who took photos. But there had to be more than that, right? Reid's hand played with the back of his head, brushing down the ends that stuck up.

"Dun take this the wrong way, but why photography? I know they take photos, but I figured it would be more than that. You're the first person I've met who's mentioned it in that light." Most of the people he knew talked about becoming Aurors, Curse Breakers, famous adventurers - not a photographer. Maybe he was just hoping there was a deeper meaning to her interest, just like how art was for some other people.

He didn't think of any less of it, but it was a fairly 'muggle' sounding profession. Her words earlier didn't go over his head though, he didn't need to stress himself out with looking for a job that might come naturally when the time comes. Professional Quidditch sounded nice, but the idea of performing in front of thousands of people? It struck fear in him. It also seemed too 'easy', he was too worried to settle too soon.
